DARTFORD LIVING MEETS....... SAJ DE SILVA BY KELLY GOLDSWORTHY Saj, the Chief Instructor at North Kent Martial Arts, met up with Kelly to discuss his club and the fundraising they have been doing for the Mental Health Foundation.

Having lived in Dartford since the age of one, Saj is a big fan of the town saying ‘I enjoy that Dartford is closely connected to one of the busiest and most multicultural cities in the world (London), yet it manages to remain still a relatively small town that is quiet at certain times of the day. It means that we get the best of both worlds!

The city life just less than one hour away on a train and beautiful countryside walking distance away.’

In 2009 he started up North Kent Martial Arts, having trained in martial arts since the age of 7 He said ‘It is a strong part of my personality and I believe that my determination, can-do attitude, persistence and discipline, stem from many of the experiences gained during training and competing in martial arts. I see the martial arts as far more character building than any other activity I have taken on, therefore the natural progression into opening up my own clubs and imparting my knowledge onto the general public, was not a difficult decision to make. Since then, I have opened sessions over seven days a week and we have students competing at world level, representing their country.’

The Club has been involved with various charity work, Saj explained how this came about ‘I gained a huge amount of satisfaction from taking part in the rehabilitation of Sri Lanka shortly after The Asian Tsunami devastated much of the coastline on Boxing Day 2004.’

Fundraising is something that is helping Saj to lift some of his own personal grief - we sadly recently lost a few of our students, two of our kick boxers - one to cancer and most recently another who was suffering from long term mental health issues. So in 2015 our charity of choice was Cancer Research UK and we raised over £500 for the cause. Then in 2016, we have chosen The Mental Health Foundation and currently, our funds raised are in excess of £800! I hope to break £1000 this year; as we open up more ideas into raising more funds and awareness.

Saj explained why mental health is an area he believes needs more attention: ‘I’ve been doing my own reading into psychology recently, as I believe it will help me to

work and understand the people who I work with. I think that issues of mental health, have been cast aside because of this lack of understanding and the people who suffer from various mental health issues on a daily basis - are isolated or made fun of because of our general ignorance in this area. We need to get together in order to do more, for those who need it the most. I see that even people who have the most difficult of mental health issues to deal with, can be successful in martial arts; as it provides structure, discipline and easy to follow steps with each belt. Sport, can really provide confidence in those who need it most.’

Men’s mental health in the UK, until recently, has been rarely spoken about. I think that the main obstacle for men in receiving and maintaining mental health, is being able to show emotion when needed. I think that we are pressured into being expected to stay strong at all times.

We also have constant damaging stereotypes to deal with, such as being the main income for the family and being told things like, “MAN UP” when you’re a young boy, rather than, “What’s wrong? Do you need someone to talk to?”.

I think that men are nurtured (socially and culturally), to believe that they must never show their weaknesses that extending a hand for help when needed, is wrong.

Perhaps that is why so many men turn to alcohol and drugs and do not seek the help of professionals, before it is too late. Suicide being the biggest killer of men under the age of 35, is a truly shocking and terrifying statistic.’

Autisum Awareness Locally - By Mandy Garford

I have recently heard about towns wanting to become ‘the uk’s first autism friendly town’... This is a place where autistic people and their families can call home. Somewhere that they find accessible, feel welcomed and valued. There are actually now many towns and cities working with the National Autistic Society to discover ways that they can be more welcoming to those with Autism. I would like to see Dartford as one of them.

There are things that we already do, very well. Did you know that the Orchard Theatre has relaxed performances for those with special needs (including those on the autistic spectrum) where the lights may be left on, loud and bright elements are reduced and the doors are left open so that people can come and go as they need. They have also produced a ‘visual story’ that can be downloaded to help the visitor go through what it will be like before they arrive. This was invaluable when taking my autistic children to the theatre!

have just launched their range of autism friendly school uniform. A branch of Asda trialled an autism friendly shopping hour. Companies, shops and amenities are bringing in people to train their staff in autism and look at what they could do too! I don’t want Dartford to miss out on all the excitement and anything we can do would be welcomed by the autistic community and their families.

Local charities like Parents Consortium have gone a long way to supporting families and raising awareness.

But more can be done and I would love to see Dartford getting involved to create a positive environment for those with autism and their families. I believe it would bring communities together and create a positivity around welcoming those with additional needs. One of the main reasons I love Dartford? The people! That’s why I believe that Dartford would be a perfect candidate to become autism friendly!

Sometimes it’s just the little things. I wondered if I would ever have a good family photo... with children that are all on the spectrum there were many obstacles to getting a professional photo taken! However, Ian at Dartfordclick in the Orchard Centre really took on board the children’s needs and gave them the extra time and patience that was needed to get a fantastic photo!

During my, quite often eventful, trips into town with 3 autistic children, there were often people who showed understanding and kindness to me and my family, from cashiers to passers by. There are things that we can all do. We can all understand autism and find out what it’s about. Many times I wanted a badge that said ‘my child’s not naughty-they have autism!’ as passers by could sometimes be quick to judge a meltdown. This is when a child finds things like lights, sounds, faces, smells overwhelming. Understanding what is going on and realising they may need time and space to calm down can make all the difference to someone’s trip into town.

Over the summer I saw that one town had a summer fair, and at the fair they had an autism tent for those that were autistic and feeling overwhelmed! Marks&Spencer

Dartford Living and We Love Dartford recently teamed up to organise a photography competition to find a picture that sums up the spirit of Dartford. The judging panel included Dartford media experts from Bresser Photography & Digital Media, Stephen Oliver: Studio & Gallery Art, Dartford Living and We Love Dartford. There were three age groups: 5-11 years old, 12-17 years old and 18+ The competition was only open to amateur photographers who live or work in the Dartford Borough. We wanted your entries to sum up why you love Dartford. We received a lot of entries and will look to feature a wider selection in a future magazine. As you can see from the photos included within the magazine, there was a very high standard of entries.

We will look to build on this success with more photography competitions in the future.

Local Business When circumstances changed at the beginning of this year; we decided to think about a different career path where we could use our knowledge and experience of working with children. We thought about how we could make life fun for children but with the element of teaching.

Afterall; with the combined number of over 50 years of working in schools, we felt this was where our forte was.

After looking at what was available in the local community for children, we came to the conclusion that we wanted to create somewhere where children of various ages could come and do art and crafts. Somewhere where they could learn skills that perhaps they hadn’t had the chance to develop. At the same time; they could learn, experience new ideas and create wonderful masterpieces to take home and parents could keep them and show them in the years to come!

And so Kiddywinks was created. Friedrich Froebel, the father of Kindergarten, believed that young children should be involved in both making their own art and enjoying the art of others. To Froebel, art activities were important, not because they allowed teachers to recognise children with unusual abilities, but because they encouraged each child’s “full and all-sided development” (Froebel, 1826). The staff at Kiddywinks believe that simple creative activities are some of the building blocks of a child’s development.

They also help children to practice important social skills like taking turns, sharing and develop motor skills and hand eye co-ordination. Parents and carers can have fun too by spending time and showing their creative side like the children!

Kiddywinks was designed for the whole family and is run every week, not just term time. It is a complete experience, as older children are welcomed to show off the depths of their creative talents and even help the younger children if they so wish.

We begin each session with a story and then after reading and talking about the book; the children are shown what activities are on offer, that relate to the story. There are tea/coffee facilities for the adults and squash for the children and the obligatory biscuits! Each session lasts an hour giving enough time for the children to complete

a number of the activities on offer. There are 3 sessions every Monday and on Wednesday; we have a stay and play session from 10am –2pm where carers can drop in and their children can play with the various toys provided. In addition to the toys, games, there are always paints and water available for the children to explore and play with.

This session also has a baby area where young toddlers/ babies can experience a sensory area. We have tried to provide something for everyone and not limit our sessions to anyone in particular. New Mums are encouraged to come and meet other Mums and their children. We are there to offer help and advice where needed; as 2 of the staff have grown up children and have been there, done that, got the tee shirt etc!

Kiddywinks has been running since the end of July and will continue to offer something new to the community.

We are located at the 5th Dartford Scout Hall on West Hill (next to EC Bates Motorcycles) which at the moment is trying to raise funds to build a new hall. Kiddywinks are helping by using the hall and growing awareness for more funding.

We believe that we are offering something that no one else provides; a place where children and adults can come together, share quality time and learn some news skills. It is a whole family experience and as the staff have prior experience teaching, have DBS checks and have attended special needs courses, we can offer something for everyone.

It is our intention to extend our help to the local community further by offering tuition to individual or small groups of children who may need extra help outside of school. We will offer a wide range of subjects and provide a fun way of learning using games and other techniques acquired by our time working within education.

These unseasonable hot days have thrown my body clock into disarray. I don’t mind a warm day,but, in mid September, I can’t get on with the really hot weather.

My ancestry is Northern European – we do rain, snow and wind quite well, but wilt a bit if temperatures reach more than 23C. So I’ve been hiding behind drawn curtains with the fan full on and planning ‘things’. Planning in our house means change. Change means upheaval. My OH gets dragged to Homebase or Ikea, feigning an interest while quietly filled with dread. In his fevered imagination the house will beoverrun with workmen, smell of paint and even worse,‘new things’ will make an appearance.

I quite understand how change can upset folk. I’m not a great fan of it myself, preferring the old and familiar.

After all change is out with the old and in with the new, and sometimes the old wasn’t really a problem anyway.

However, all I wanted to do was enhance our surroundings.

I kept reasonably quiet about the planned work – no sense in upsetting all beforehand. The odd shaped parcels from Amazon gave some hint, as did the small tester pots of paint left around different locations in the house. There was also the ominous phone call from Paul, our exceptionally wonderful handyman, asking for the cabinet measurements...

Luckily everyone was out when the day arrived and the changes were effected quickly and efficiently. By the time the family got home that evening, the conservatory had been fitted with some cupboards and shelves along one wall, the broken cistern was replaced and my study boasted some new shelving. Minor changes in the scheme of things, but they all agree it is a great improvement.

Luckily, it’s still quite warm, so I can plan for phase two.

This time I’ll keep it even quieter just to see if they notice the changes when they’re done.

Keeping on with the warm weather theme, I thought I’d share some observations while wandering around Dartford and Bluewater recently.

Firstly, most of the clothes stores have their winter ranges in stock, so hard luck if you’re shopping for a late summer holiday. Summers are longer and hotter now with flip-flops and sandals almost de rigueur until October.

I’ve never worked in retail, but I do appreciate that the clothes buyers have a thankless task in predicting when we will need that new winter coat. However, the change between the seasons has blurred over the years with longer summers and milder, shorter winters more the norm. I would have thought it was in the stores’ own interests to make certain they are selling what we need when we need it, rather than having displays of warm winter coats and jumpers and boots, beautifully presented of course, while we wander around in our lightweight summer clothes ignoring them.

Another strange (well to me) situation was that even before the schools had broken up for summer, high street stores were advertising Back To School clothing and equipment.

With many secondary schools using their own stockists and the supermarkets selling a range of generic school uniform for primary age, why the rush? Children grow at different stages and replacement items are available all year round, so why the hurry to buy before they’ve even started their holidays?

However, perhaps the most amusing/sad situation sight were the stacks of mince pies and the giant tins of sweets for Christmas before Halloween or Bonfire Night. I saw these in my local shop on one of the hottest days so far.

Why we rush through life at such a fast pace is a puzzle to me, always looking forward to the next Big Event. Surely we should take time and slow down. Look around us more, appreciate what goes on in our neighbourhoods and town. Enjoy the lazy summer days in the parks around the area. Use the warm nights to have friends round for an impromptu BBQ or just chill in the garden, talking into the night. When it does get colder, then is the time to start digging out our winter woollies and making our the Christmas card lists.

Let’s not hurry through our lives, but live in the present rather than the future.

In this month’s article we’ll bring you new 2017 models to be displayed at the Paris Motor Show and new rules for using mobile phones in cars.

2017 Land Rover Discovery T h e D i s cove r y is Land Rover ’s largest model aside from the Range Rover. It’s a serious S U V, m e a n i n g that proper offroad ability is guaranteed, even if it won’t be used by the majority of Discovery owners. It’s in direct competition with the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. It’s expected that the next Discovery will come with the 2.0-litre diesel engine that features across multiple Jaguar and Land Rover cars. It’s also very likely that the V6 petrol and diesel engines that power some of the Range Rover line-up will also make their way into higher-spec Discovery models. Jaguar Land Rover wants to take the next Discovery upmarket from the current model, so a plusher interior is almost guaranteed. There will also be the option of seven seats, so the car will retain the practicality with which the Discovery name has become synonymous. The Discovery’s official full reveal comes at the end of the month at the Paris Motor Show, when we’ll see all of the car and learn about the full engine line-up, with deliveries expected from Spring 2017. New technology may see it priced above the current car’s £47,495 starting price.

2017 Audi A5 Sportback Audi’s 2017 A5 arrives in four-door guise, offering more cabin space than its two-door coupé equivalent. This is the Audi A5 Sportback, a more practical version of the

latest A5 coupé that is set to go on sale later this year to rival the likes of the Mercedes CLA and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. The new four-door model offers more cabin space than its two-door sibling and, like the regular A5, comes with a performance-focused S5 range-topping model. There will be more boot space up in the Sportback by 15 litres, to 480 litres compared to the coupé. The Sportback gets 2.0 TFSI turbocharged petrol and 2.0 TDI diesel four-cylinder engines in various states of tune. The A5 Sportback is offered with the choice of a six-speed manual or eight-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. The entry-level car sits on 17in wheels, with 18in wheels available for higher-spec models. Top-of-therange A5s and the S5 get 19in wheels. As with the coupé, the A5 Sportback gets Audi’s optional Virtual Cockpit system, which includes a 12.3in high-definition digital instrument panel, as well as the latest evolution of Audi’s Multi Media Interface (MMI) infotainment system. Audi is yet to confirm the car’s pricing, but a small increase is expected over that of the outgoing model, which starts at £30,035. Order books will open this autumn, after the Paris Motor show.

New six-point penalty for mobile phone use when driving Motorists caught using a handheld mobile phone when driving to face six penalty points and a £200 fine from 2017. Under new rules announced by the Government, drivers caught using a hand held mobile phone while driving face increased penalties.

Texting, making phone calls without a hands free kit or checking social media accounts will incur a £200 fine and six driving licence penalty points from 2017. Drivers who have recently passed their test face having their licence revoked and being forced to retake their test. The new rules will come into force sometime in the first half of 2017 in England, Scotland and Wales, and could see fines of up to £1,000 with a six-month driving ban for drivers who are caught twice for the offence.

Cut down the stems to 6 inches and then carefully lift the stools (roots) with a fork, labelling them so you know the variety and colouRemove any loose soil and then box the stools in moist compost and place in a cool, airy, frost-free place. Good ventilation is essential and an electric fan heater is the perfect way to keep the plants both frost-free and to circulate the air.

Check For Colour Gaps Check for gaps in your beds and borders and fill them with plants like Hardy Cyclamen, Hardy Chrysanths and winter flowering Pansies. Also, look out for scented winter flowering shrubs, such as Viburnum Farreri and Viburnum Bodnantense, Mahonia and Sarcococca. Garden Planning As gardens start to lose their summer colour it’s a good time to take stock and work out what new plants you’d like and which need to be moved, replaced or replanted. Greenhouse care Get the greenhouse ready for winter by removing shading and sterilising it with Jeyes Fluid. Then put up bubble insulation to cut heating bills.

Horticultural fleece can also be used to help provide a few extra degrees of frost protection.

Lift Half Hardys Before the frost and cold weather takes its toll on your half hardy bedding and patio perennials, make sure you lift all your fuchsias, surfinia petunias,geraniums, osteospermums and all the other. Remove any dead, dying or diseased leaves and stems, cut the roots and some fresh compost.

Pest Watch Many pests will lay their eggs on plants for over wintering and these will attack early next year.

Deciduous trees and shrubs that have drop their leaves can be treated with Growing Success Winter Tree Wash. Slugs and snails will be very active during damp weather, so protect vulnerable plants with your favourite control method. Diseased leaves that are left on the ground should be carefully raked up and disposed of. Other debris provides over-winter places for pests, so get rid of this too.

Should Weight Loss be Steady?

The general consensus is that if you’re on a “Diet” you should lose weight consistently, week in, week out.

Many people go to slimming clubs expecting their weight to have gone down every week; excited when they’ve lost 4lbs, devastated when they’ve not lost anything or gained a pound or two back again.

For starters, a 1lb a week weight loss is good! If you lose weight too quickly, chances are that you’re eating too little and the weight loss will soon slow down or stop, possibly followed by weight gain (yo-yo dieting).

The weight loss however will not likely be linear. If you lose 52lbs over a year, it probably won’t be 1lb a week for 52 weeks; but more than likely a pound or two here and there, ups and downs. But most people I’m sure would be ecstatic to have lost 52lbs in the last year.

How much weight have you lost in the last year? Not how much did you lose and gain back again, but how much less do you now weigh than a year ago? For most people following the most popular “Diets” the answer is probably a lot less than 52lbs (assuming you had that much to lose).

A successful diet is one you can stick to, even on holiday, through birthdays and Christmas, and work do’s and weekends away. Obviously weight loss or body composition is part of it – after all, if they’re not changing the diet’s not working; but losing lots of weight and gaining it back again is not a successful diet.

Fluctuations in weight are fine and to be expected. Even if you’re 100% compliant with your diet and exercise this fluctuation will happen. An “unsuccessful” week where you’ve not lost anything, or even gained a pound, does not mean you should eat less next week. That being said, if you see weight increase for 3 or 4 weeks in a row something’s not working.

If you’re exercising, you are emptying and refilling your muscles with fuel and water – so weight changes of a few pounds up or down will be common, as well as the fact that what you eat and drink, what time you weigh yourself,

the “time of the month” and other factors all influence bodyweight (which is why there are better ways to track progress other than weight on the scales)but the general direction (averaged out over weeks/months/years) should be DOWN – at least until you’ve reached your target body composition.

If you’ve been following a “Diet” that was successful initially, but doesn’t seem to be working any more – it was the wrong diet for you. If your only move from here is to cut calories even further – wrong diet.

If your diet is working, but you’re struggling with it, starving, or planning a blowout/binge – then it’s the wrong diet for you.

If your diet is working for you, and in general you’re losing weight steadily and consistently, you’re not waiting ‘til Friday for a “cheat”, and you can see yourself easily eating this way permanently – Congratulations! Keep doing what you’re doing. You’ve cracked it! (But be ready for the diet to change as you do – it won’t stay the same forever).

Basically, EXPECT your weight to go up and down. Don’t panic or change anything if it’s up slightly, but at the same time if it’s more “up” than “down”, or you’re only a few pounds lighter than you were 6 months ago, you need to readdress your dietary needs and find a more suitable option.

However, when you make a business related journey from the office, the cost incurred is tax deductible. If you use your own vehicle for business travel you can claim a certain amount per mile as a tax deductible expense. This is currently 45p per mile for cars and vans, 24p per mile for motorbikes and 20p per mile for pushbikes. The rates drop to 25p, 24p and 20p respectively for each mile over 10,000 miles, although it is very doubtful that anyone would cover 10,000 miles cycling! Bav’s Sporting Comment ParalympicsGB are celebrating after bettering their performance at their home Games in London four years ago.

They have 147 medals (at time of writing) in Rio - 27 more than they won in London. It is also the first time since 1988 that Great Britain has won more than 50 gold medals at a Paralympics.

The team’s target - set by UK Sport - was 121 medals, which has been achieved. ParalympicsGB finished third in the medal table at their home games four years ago, behind Russia and China.

They will finish second in Rio, behind China.

On Saturday, the rapidly expanding Dartford Rugby Club kicked off its season with a community event at the Leigh Academy. Over 500 people attended the day to celebrate the start of the league campaign with Club Vice-Presidents, guests, VIP’s & Sponsors.

There were games for the ‘Chairman’s XV’, Men’s 1st & 2nd XV, as well as an exhibition session from the club’s Youth Academy with kids aged 3-17 showing their skills to the enthusiastic crowd.

Sponsors to the club, who have all been impressed by the club’s ethos – FUN, DISCIPLINE, RESPECT, TEAMWORK, SPORTMANSHIP & COMMUNITY.

The day also saw the unveiling of the brand new Club Kit design, generously supported a number of local companies and organisations.

Dartford Valley RFC, the community rugby club based in Dartford, is experiencing a rapid period of growth and has just announced an exciting list of sponsors for the upcoming 2016/17 season, who have committed to the club’s ambitious plans for the future as they work towards a ground and clubhouse of their own in Partnership with Dartford Borough Council.

The Club has a committed, hard-working, young Executive committee with the clear aim of growing a communitycentered, all-inclusive club ranging from the Youth Section to Women’s, Men’s and Wheelchair rugby. It also takes its social responsibility very seriously, with nominated charities receiving up to 50% of all money raised through participation and a wide range of social events throughout the year.

The next big step for the club over the next 12 months, in addition to its ambitious plans already in place, is to secure permanent, independent playing facilities in the Town. Plans are well underway and the club hopes to be in a position within the next month or 2 to announce more exciting news – watch this space!

The Big Dartford Living Interview: Jimmy Osmond

The show is coming from a sincere place. There are not many people who could pull it off because they wouldn’t have that connection with Andy.

How do you feel when you sing Andy’s most memorable songs, especially his universally adored “theme tune”, Moon River?

I’ve worked my whole life in showbiz - I remember my mom changing my outfits three times on Andy’s show – and I have such fond memories. When you sing a wonderful song so many times, it takes you back to your memories of growing up. These songs remind me of performing in Las Vegas not just with Andy, but also with Frank Sinatra and Elvis.

You celebrate your 50th Anniversary in show business this year and are touring the UK this autumn with a new show A Tribute To Andy Williams – Moon River & Me. Andy Williams obviously represents someone very special in your life?

I began my performing career aged three singing with Andy Williams on his television series. My brothers were already on the show, so I started working with them when I was very young. I was the little guy who’d run on and be goofy. We ended up as regulars on the show and singing on records like Aquarius.

What was your role on the show?

In those early days, I was the novelty guy, like a mascot. I was the kid brother that everyone liked to slag off. I was the obnoxious boy in the corner. Even in our cartoon TV series, I was the bad apple. But after a lot of therapy, I’ve come to terms with it!

What do you think made Andy so special as a performer?

He had such a smooth voice. You could tell he was a genuinely nice guy. I say, “Please don’t think I could ever sound like him, but let’s celebrate his melodies together.”

You have always had a special relationship with British audiences. Can you put this into words?

I’m so surprised the fans have stuck with us. But I’m delighted by their loyalty, especially in this country. For me it’s special in the UK because it is not just about me being an Osmond. It’s about me being me. I’ve done reality TV shows in the UK and that has put me out there. It’s just for fun and not to sell anything. The British public like that. They like people who can laugh at themselves.

And there’s a lot to laugh at if you look at my history!

What do you think now of your record-breaking hit, Long Haired Lover from Liverpool?

Everybody still loves that song. It’s still the biggest selling Osmond record. It sold close to 2,000,000 copies, although I didn’t get a dime for it! I now do a rocking version of it with a flaming guitar. People love that because it’s me having fun with it. Everyone over the age of 20 knows all the words.

When you look back over your marvellous career, is it possible to pick out the highlights?

I have performed for The Queen twice. On one occasion, I had to sing that “unmentionable song”!!!! I can remember it clearly as I was standing in the line after the show next to Roger Moore and Liza Minnelli and as The Queen approached me I said ‘Hello, Mrs Queen’. I think she saw the funny side!! Much later on in life we had just lost our mother and we were performing once again at the Royal Variety Show – this time in Scotland. Coming down the line The Queen stopped in front of me and remembered my mom who had previously presented her with a copy of The Book of Mormon. I was really touched – what

an amazing memory and so much compassion. One of those moments you never forget. Another highlight was Las Vegas with Elvis – just fabulous.

What effect did I’m a Celebrity have on your career in the UK? That show was great. Before, people wanted me to sing Long Haired Lover from Liverpool. Afterwards, I had guys coming out of pubs saying, “How’s Teddy?” It created an incredible new relationship with the audience. People were having a laugh at me and were grateful for it. After that I did Pop Star to Opera Star and Challenge Anneka. Now people know I’m not afraid to try anything – although I probably should be!

Why are the Osmonds still so popular?

We’re still around because we haven’t burnt any bridges.

We’ve always tried to leave a little bit on the table. It’s such a greedy business, but if you leave a bit on the table, you will be asked back. It’s not about amassing loads of money. It’s about the experience. That’s why I love live events. You are giving that unique experience to people.

You recently took part and got through to the Finals of Celebrity Masterchef how did you feel about that?

I really loved being on that show and didn’t think I would get as far as I did. I was really surprised to get through to the final but loved every minute of it and learned so much. It was a fantastic experience and I made some really good friends.

Do you enjoy performing in Dartford at the Orchard Theatre?

It’s always so much fun to perform at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford. I can remember the amazing reception my brothers and I received on our Up Close & Personal Tour in 2012 and we even opened up the Boogie Nights Tour there!

You guys really know how to party and appreciate great music, so I’m thrilled to be returning there on October 11th with my show Moon River & Me, a tribute to my mentor Andy Williams.

The “Jimmy Osmond: Moon River and Me” tour began on 26th September at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre and will be at The Orchard Theatre on 11th October.

What drew you to appear on Masterchef?

I love the show. Greg and John are really cool. I wanted to learn how to cook properly but more importantly it’s just a very good life experience. Also doing the show was really exciting.

Having enjoyed huge success over 50 years in showbiz, you remain very well balanced and happy.

How have you managed that?

After this many years in the business, we could have sat back and just celebrated what we’d done. But the way I was raised was always to look for improvements. My dad was an Army sergeant, and after every show, he made us examine what was wrong with it. We were all hard on ourselves. When Long Haired Lover from Liverpool was number one, I said to him, “Dad, isn’t that cool?” But he just gave me a broom and told me to clean the yard! But I’m very grateful for that. That approach saved us because it taught us not to believe our own hype. We could have Interestedinin advertising?

September/ October Theatre Roundup

Believe it or not, it’s already time for the October update (no, I don’t know where the time’s gone either). After a bit of a break over the summer, the Orchard Theatre kicked off its new season in style last month with crowd pleaser Dirty Dancing, tense thriller Rehearsal for Murder and family favourite The Sound of Music. And the fantastic shows keep on coming… so here’s what October has in store for local theatre lovers.

From 5th-8th October, Dartford Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society will be taking over the Orchard with their production of Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun. Don’t be put off by their name; Dartford Living reviewer Kelly saw DAODS’ Boogie Nights last October and said there was nothing amateur about it!

They’ll be followed from 18th-22nd by The Glenn Miller Story, starring Tommy Steele as America’s most famous big band leader, who mysteriously vanished on his way to Paris during the Second World War. Younger theatregoers won’t want to miss The Very Hungry Caterpillar (21st-23rd), a critically acclaimed version of Eric Carle’s beloved children’s stories, featuring 75 colourful puppets. And we’ll be seeing the month out with the world’s most successful rock ‘n’ roll musical, The Buddy Holly Story, which returns to Dartford from 25th-29th October.

If you missed Chicago at the Orchard in March (or you just want to see it again), you’ve got not one but two

chances to catch it this month. Now starring Jessie Wallace alongside John Partridge and Hayley Tamaddon, Chicago will be at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley from 5th-10th or, a bit further afield, at the Marlowe in Canterbury from 24th-29th.

Bromley has a couple of other treats for us in October, too.

First, Roddy Doyle’s smash hit musical, The Commitments, based on the 1991 movie and featuring over 20 soul classics, stops in on its national tour from 3rd-7th October.

And fans of Michael Morpurgo should check out Why the Whales Came, with award-winning storyteller Danyah Miller, on 23rd and 24th.

Now that the nights are drawing in, let’s not forget that panto season is almost upon us (oh yes it is…). We’re spoilt for choice this year: closest to home at the Orchard is Joe Pasquale in Snow White or Blue’s Antony Costa in Jack and the Beanstalk at Woodville Halls. Or if you’re a Strictly fan, you might fancy a trip to Bromley to see Craig Revel Horwood do what he does best as the evil Captain Hook in Peter Pan. And while we’re talking about Christmas, did you know you can have your festive party at the theatre? The Orchard still has availability for Moonlight and Mistletoe, or celebrate the holiday season in the Churchill’s Winter Wonderland. Find all the details on the theatre websites.
