The importance of play The importance of play for young children can never be underestimated. Play is how children learn. At Dimples play is highly valued as are the environment and the knowledge and interaction of the nursery practitioners. We pride ourselves on providing our children with outstanding opportunities to develop their interests both indoor and especially outdoors. Children who engage in activities that fascinate them are more likely to learn from them. These activities will hold their interest and they will be more motivated to problem solve and investigate. First hand experiences provides children with memorable learning experiences. Bottle feeding our two real lambs this spring gave our children a real connection with nature, helped them to learn about living things and was super fun too.

Children develop more in the first five years of their life than at any other time so immersing them in memorable, exciting and thought provoking experiences is vitally important. If you require an exceptional nursery for your child then come and visit Dimples, you won’t be disappointed. See our advert on page 28 or visit www.dimplesnursery.co.uk for more information.

All of our children (our young babies, toddlers, preschoolers and holiday club children) play outside every day, whatever the weather and experience nature first hand. They play with open ended resources that allow them to use their imagination and play skills. Playing with mud kitchens, measuring how tall their plants have grown, making petal perfume, rolling around on the grass and playing with their peers in dens made from sheets and twigs helps them to develop their language, social skills, confidence, autonomy and self esteem. Our parents are included in nursery activities whenever possible and feedback from parents is so positive. Our trips to the woods are

Dartford Football Club’s Rock: Exclusive Interview with Manager Tony Burman Tony Burman has had a close affiliation with Dartford FC for many years as both a player and manager. He was just 17 years old when he signed for Charlton Athletic from the Darts for £2,000 in 1978. He is the longest serving manager currently in the Conference Premier and he’ll be celebrating ten years in the job in January. He has seen the club at its highest and lowest points. Here, he tells Dartford Living about the challenges of the role and how important the town and the club are to one another. What were your thoughts on the club’s reprieve from relegation? We were devastated last season and we never thought that finishing third from bottom would give us a chance of survival. That being said, I’m absolutely delighted that we have stayed in the league. It’s the best place for us and for all non-league clubs to be. Do you feel sympathy for clubs in financial difficulty, or is it of their own doing? I feel sympathy for managers and players that have signed contracts and have mortgages to pay like everybody else, but I also feel sorry for the supporters. It doesn’t make me feel better that the clubs have gone under but it does give me comfort knowing that we’re running our club properly and that we try to stay within our means. How would you assess the last ten years as manager? When I took over, reaching the Conference Premier was the dream and now we’ve achieved that dream. Last season was a major blow for us and it affected what we were doing, but that happens in football. Now the dream is league football and you’ve got to keep trying to put things in place, which we are certainly doing. How well do you feel you have recruited for the 2014/15 season? We’re in a much better position in relation to players we’ve signed when compared to this time last year and the majority of them have had experience of playing in the Conference Premier, which was another boost. I think fans weren’t too sure at the time but I think they’ll realise that we have a strong 17 players and we will follow that with some good prospects coming through the academy. How is the club preparing for the future? When I took over the job again in 2005 we had three sides in the junior section. Now we’ve got in the region of 50 junior teams from under-8s to under-18s, made up of over 750 local youngsters. That’s a major achievement in my view and it is laying the foundations for the future. All of those players will be trying to

Bow Lodge to the Rescue!

Bow Lodge started 30 years ago when Maria Revell took in a cat that was found in a house. The owners had moved away and left her with no food or water. She needed a thyroid operation which Maria paid for, then nursed her back to health and gave her a forever home. This cat was Bow and has resulted in Maria from Tilbury taking in, neutering, caring for and finding new forever homes for over 500 cats / kittens a year since. Bow Lodge has grown and now includes her daughter Sarah (in Purfleet) and Laura (in Dartford) fostering cats and making vets trips and Janine (in Basildon) managing our cat chat Facebook and Twitter pages. We take the cats / kittens into our own homes. Our aim is to help / rehome cats of all ages.We also offer advice on cat care and work with other rescue centres and local vets. As our team self fund at Bow Lodge we ask for a minimum adoption donation which is non refundable. This just about covers the cost of us having the cats and kittens treated for fleas and worms and neutered / spayed and chipped. We also have to find additional money for food and litter and any unexpected vets bills. A home check applies before any cat / kitten is placed by us. It’s important for us to ensure cats go to a loving, suitable new home, otherwise they are likely to end up back in a rescue centre. Currently there is a lack of neutering which poses a danger to cats everywhere, harming their health and resulting in unwanted kittens that could struggle to find homes in the future. Bow Lodge

Facts: • Manager since: January 2005 • Playing career: Dartford, Charlton Athletic, Leytonstone & Ilford, Bromley, Erith & Belvedere

get into the academy and hopefully progress into the first team, which I’m sure one day will make it a production line of top players for the club. How important are local businesses to the club? We want businesses in Dartford to help the club as much as they can. I can’t thank them enough because it means so much. Every penny counts and because of the sponsorship that we get from companies and individuals that are in and around the town, we would certainly not be where we are today. If you could ask Dartford Living readers to do ONE thing for the club, what would it be? I would encourage them use the club and use the fantastic facility at Princes Park. Whether you’re coming to watch the matches, using the 9-hole golf course, hiring the community pitch for training or even using the function hall for ballroom dancing! It’s a fantastic base and the more people that use it, the better. It’s their facility and they should be proud of it.

tries to promote neutering as much as possible. The photo is of Monty. He came into us as a stray. We booked him in for his healthcheck and neuter, sadly to discover he has no hip joint. His leg is causing him discomfort and his operation is booked in for this week. However, we are looking for a forever home for this special little guy after he has recovered. He is great with children and other cats and even not fazed by dogs. Any donations towards his vet bill would be appreciated.

Bow Lodge

get into the academy and hopefully progress into the first team, which I’m sure one day will make it a production line of top players for the club.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at The Orchard Theatre with Last Night of the Proms by Richey Estcourt

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) recently performed ‘The Last Night of the Proms’ here in Dartford. To see the RPO perform on any occasion is a special privilege, so to see them perform in Dartford was an opportunity too good to miss. They performed a diverse selection of pieces, opening with the Overture from Rossini’s ‘Thieving Magpie’, and included works as diverse as Tchaikovsky, Bizet and Debussy. The RPO were conducted for this occasion by Hilary Davon Wetton, not only a skilled and vastly experienced conductor, but also something of a fine entertainer is his own right. He intersperses the musical pieces with an informative and witty listening aids, for the benefit of those unfamiliar with any of the pieces. As something of a bonus, the talented soprano Deborah Norman joined the orchestra for the vocal parts of Dvorak’s ‘Song to the Moon’, and Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘The Sun Whose Rays are All Ablaze’.

Bowling and Hornpipe’, which left both the audience and string section rather short of breath. As is tradition, the show (again joined by Deborah Norman) was brought to a close by a rousing sequence of ‘Rule Britannia’, ‘Jerusalem’ and the ‘Pomp and Circumstance March No.1’ - music which really which brought the house down, and gave the show fitting closure on a dramatic and balmy summer evening. The RPO return to Dartford with a programme full of sensational orchestral favourites in November this year. If you didn’t catch them this time, it’s a highly recommended evening out. Give Your Child a Head Start in Language Development Hearing babies from around 8 months old are able to communicate simple signs to their parent - how? Many of you probably use some of the signs with your baby already without even realising it. You wave, point, and say all gone with your hands outstretched, shake or nod your head, and clap hands. All we do at Singalong Baby Sign is build on that and give your baby some more signs to help him or her to let you know what they are thinking. Parents and babies can come to our signing class from newborn to around 3 years old. However, from around 6 months old babies become increasingly receptive to language, and as a rule babies tend to make their first sign at around 8 months old. Signing with your baby is really easy to learn as we sing to nursery rhymes that you already know replacing the “actions” with “signs”. We also use toys, puppets and musical instruments to assist the learning process and stimulate your baby.

So what are the benefits • Helps your baby communicate with you before he or she can speak • Can increase baby’s IQ by 12 points • Can build a bridge between two languages for bilingual babies. • Signing reduces tantrums and frustration • Your baby is more likely to speak earlier and have a larger vocabulary • A great way to meet new friends • Can help with post natal depression • Singalong baby sign is really good fun! Classes are £5 per class or £6.00 for drop in sessions For more information please contact Tracy on 07768 447657 or visit us online at www. babysign.org.uk or www.facebook.com/ singalongbabysign

Bav’s Sporting Comment In the 54-year history of the European Championship, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have never all qualified for the same finals. That is not surprising, given that Northern Ireland and Wales have never made it to a finals - but it could change at Euro 2016. While only 16 teams contested Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, 24 nations will compete in an expanded tournament in France. Might that make room for all five?

With the top two teams in the eight groups, along with the best third-placed side, all qualifying directly for the finals, there has never been a better chance for them all to progress. Even if they fail to make that first cut, the other third-placed sides in each qualifying group will get a second chance, playing off against each other in twolegged play-offs.

Bite The Ballot! When politicians and political parties write policies, they write them for people on the electoral register. After living in Dartford for 10 years, it’s clear to see times when policies certainly haven’t been written for young people. Only 56% of 16-24 year olds are registered, compared to 95% of over-65s. Of course, the statistics don’t paint the full picture, what’s important is what it means for young people. For most 16-18 year olds, an annual bus pass costs £400, that’s £400 more than an Older Person’s Bus Pass. This may seem reasonable, after all senior citizen’s have paid and worked their way up until their old age, but realistically Kent County Council have to decide — in a time when there are budget cuts — who they want to let down.

Upcoming events in SEPTEMBER:

5: Athletics: Diamond League, Brussels 7: F1: Italian Grand Prix, Monza 8-21: Sailing: World Championships, Santander 17: Women’s Football: World Cup qualifiers: Montenegro v England 21: F1: Singapore Grand Prix 23: Cricket: Final County Championship fixtures start 26-28: Golf: Ryder Cup, Gleneagles

By local resident Conor Jackson rating, making it easier for you to take out a loan, buy a car or get a mobile phone contract. So whether you’re a young person, or are a parent or a grandparent of a young person, make sure you (or them) have a voice, Take Power, and register to vote. For more information, check out Bite The Ballot (www. bitetheballot.co.uk), a party-neutral organisation — founded in Dartford — on a mission to empower young voters.

Ask yourself, if you have one spare ticket to a day out in London and two people are asking you for it: one person who you see all the time and another who you barely ever see. Who is it easier to let down? Politicians, whether local or national, have to make this choice. Do they make promises for the older voters, or the nonvoting youth? But being on the register doesn’t just give you a stronger voice, it helps improve your credit

Dartford Men’s Shed – Did You Know‚ Can You Help? by Dartford Matters’ Andy Clark

Some of you may have heard of this group which was set up in Dartford earlier this year but, if not, hopefully this article will give you a better idea of what the Shed is all about. It is an organisation which aims to provide a direct impact by working on Community projects both large and small and is already having a positive effect within the Borough. Whilst the original idea came from Australia about 7 years ago, similar groups began to be formed in this country 2 years ago. The original focus was on servicemen and women returning to civilian life and being able to continue to use and share the knowledge and skills they had learnt during their time in the services. However, the Dartford Shed are widening their horizons and are opening up membership to people from all walks of life and extend a welcome to anybody who has the time and desire to make a difference to the Community. Already the group have been involved in successful projects such as poppy planting to commemorate the fallen, in conjunction with the Greenhithe and Swanscombe branch of the Royal British Legion and have completed several smaller projects involving gardening for less abled people. In addition to these projects, the group are in talks with Dartford Job Centre with a view to instigating a 5 week training course for all who want to volunteer. Subjects which will be covered

include first aid, work safety, team building exercises and actually going out into the Community to help people with tasks such as gardening, fence painting and other tasks. Although these may seem small matters to most of us, they can be major problems to somebody less able. At the end of the course, it is envisaged that there will be certification which will be recognised by businesses and valuable experience will be learned to possibly help in finding longer term employment Other more major projects planned for the future include a self-sustaining Bio-Farm and contributing to the work on the Northfleet Harbour Restoration Project. This group have already achieved a lot in a short time and bigger things can be expected in the future. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to get involved in bringing the Community together; the more people involved, the more Community projects can be taken on to everyone’s benefit If you feel that you can help in any way at all, would like to make suggestions as to future projects which the Shed can help with or just find out more information, they can be contacted via their website dartfordshed.moonfruit.com.or email dartfordshed@ outlook.com Even if you can’t help, perhaps you know of someone who could; please help spread the word.

Big Interview: Gareth Johnson, MP for Dartford Since 2013 funding for speech and language assessments in Dartford has been cut. This will make the process for diagnosing autism difficult as this assessment is part of the diagnosis process. In addition funding has also been cut for supporting children with a diagnosis of autism. What can you, as MP do to help the growing number of children suffering with autism, both diagnosed and awaiting, indefinitely, a diagnosis? This is an issue which I raised directly with NHS Dartford Gravesham and Swanley Clinical Commissioning Trust (CCG) earlier this year following a constituent raising her concerns with me. My constituent was experiencing difficulties obtaining support for her son and asked me for my assistance in ensuring that he received access to specialist speech and language therapy. Having raised the issue with the CCG I was advised that additional funding was to be approved to help with the diagnosis of autism and that the CCG would be taking the step to employ a full time speech and language therapist to ensure that autistic children have access to the support that they need. This is an excellent example of why people should take the opportunity to contact their MP over important issues like this. A lot of local people feel disappointed that the promise that the Dartford Crossing would become free to use upon the building costs being repaired was not honoured. Now the centre for handling the charge is being moved to Leeds. Why, when suffering all the traffic and pollution disadvantages the crossing brings will local people not even receive the advantage of employment opportunities from it? I feel strongly that the tolls on the Dartford crossing should have been scrapped when the bridge was paid for back in 2004. When I was elected in 2010, Gordon Brown had just announced that the crossing would be sold. I am pleased that we were able to reverse that decision and that it remains in public ownership. A private company runs the operations on the crossing and although clearly it is difficult for governments to dictate to private companies where they should be based, it would have been preferable for them to base their staff in Dartford. In the autumn we will see the first action being taken to tackle congestion in the area since the bridge was built when free flow tolling is introduced. The decline of Dartford town centre has been a source of upset and contention for many years. What action have you taken to address this issue? Tesco’s pace of redevelopment (or lack of it) has been very frustrating. I meet regularly with the Council who are leading on this issue to discuss Lowfield Street’s future. Demolition work has now begun so we can be optimistic that the town centre at long last will receive the regeneration that it desperately needs. Why did you decide to vote against the legalisation of equal marriage? I opposed same sex marriage as I took the view that marriage is a union between a man and a woman and did not need to be redefined. For me the issue was about what constitutes marriage

Offshore Income

Questions provided by local people following Dartford Living on Facebook and Twitter. Questions compiled by Kelly Goldsworthy

Individuals who fail to declare offshore income could now face criminal charges even if they had no intention of avoiding tax. The new HMRC policy could make criminals of those ignorant of the tax law, or those who forgot about assets they have offshore. In the March Budget, George Osborne announced his intention to make offshore tax evasion a criminal offence. As a result of this, HMRC are now launching a consultation on the new rules, with detailed proposals expected in the Autumn Statement.

rather than to hold back any section of society. As a result of this legislation gay couples can opt for either a civil partnership or marriage whereas straight couples can only opt for marriage. It therefore has done little to further equality. What are you doing to boost the number of young people registered to vote in Dartford? As part of my duties as the local MP I have visited almost every one of the 36 primary and 10 secondary schools in the constituency. This has helped me to engage with local school children with a view to them taking an active interest in politics both at school and when they leave. I was one of the founding supporters of the ‘bite the ballot’ campaign that was set up in Wilmington and encourages young people to register to vote and to use that vote. I have found that there is no lack of interest in politics from young people but very often they do feel disengaged from the party political system. Therefore the challenge is for all political parties to try and connect with the hopes, concerns and aspirations of younger people. I believe that being accessible to constituents through my regular, informal open surgeries encourages engagement in the political process. What difference do you think you have made since being elected and why should people vote for you at the next general election? Ever since I was elected I have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people living in Dartford. I live in the constituency and grew up in the area. I went to Dartford Grammar School and my children both attend local schools so I have an instinctive desire to improve the local area. I think that it’s important for the Local MP to share the same experiences as the people they represent. I use the same train services that local people use, I rely on the same GP service, road systems and local services. Dartford is one of the most exciting areas in the country now. We have the potential for thousands of new jobs at the Garden City, the proposed theme park and town centre regeneration. These changes will be complemented by millions of pounds of infrastructure investment. This new confidence in Dartford has led to a 50% reduction in youth unemployment since I was elected in 2010. At the same time I am pleased to have helped secure extra investment in Darent Valley Hospital and many local schools. I am not part of the Political establishment that is separate from the people, I am a Dartfordian. That’s why I have enjoyed helping around 3000 people with requests for assistance in the last year alone.

First reactions to the move appear to be positive, with the Council receiving lots of positive feedback from retailers, traders and members of the public but that hasn’t stopped Market Managers from spotting a number of potential improvements and promising to tweak the layout of the market and improve flow for pedestrians.

Leader of the Council Jeremy Kite said, “We’re very pleased with the way our first day in the High Street went and we picked up a number of great comments from both shoppers and traders. We also had some perfectly fair suggestions about things we could do better. We learned a lot during the day, particularly about pedestrian spaces and the need to promote some parts of the market. We are going to work with traders and make improvements in the weeks ahead.

Some retailers in the High Street were pleased too with one reporting increases in takings of nearly 40%. Kristin Cheyne, Church Warden for Holy Trinity, said, “Having the market in the High Street makes it far more people friendly. It’s absolutely fantastic, a much better atmosphere.

Be Aware of Suicide in Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley

The reasons for suicide may be complex; there is no single factor that can lead to someone taking their own life. But a person is more likely to have suicidal thoughts if they suffer from an existing mental health condition, including depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Alcohol and drug use can also be contributory factors – along with poor job security or unhappiness at work. A person may tolerate adversity but a stressful event – such as a bereavement, divorce or redundancy - may push that person into a pattern of suicidal thinking and behaviour. Dr Elizabeth Lunt, the CCG’s clinical lead for mental health, said: “The tragic death of the actor and comedian Robin Williams has been widely talked about. Let us together dispel

Nationally, suicide is the biggest cause of death in people aged between 25 and 44. But only a third (30 per cent) of those who took their own life had sought help from mental health professionals.

NHS Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which plans and pays for most of the area’s healthcare, is highlighting World Suicide Prevention Day which took place in September. Last year (2013) there were 145 suicides in Kent. Of those, 111 were men and 34 were women.

some of the myths and reach out to the most vulnerable in society. It is desperately sad that the vast majority of people who commit suicide have not had the help that may have changed the course of their lives. The reality is that many people can feel differently about their lives once they have had some help. Men – particularly those aged between 30 and 60 – are more at risk from suicide. Many don’t like to seek help or support with their mental health. They often confront their problems alone, or seek comfort in alcohol – even though this can make matters worse.” GP Dr Lunt added: “I would urge anyone who is depressed to seek help. We want to see people accessing the help they need. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. All of us at some stage in our lives need help from other people. There are many different ways that people can receive help; from face-to-face therapy or telephone support to computer-based cognitive behavioural therapy. Medication is also available when needed. With the right support, people can go on to lead healthier and happier lives.” An appointment with a GP can be the first step. Free confidential emotional advice and guidance is also available 24 hours a day from the Mental Health Matters helpline on 0800 107 0160 for landlines or 03003 305486 for mobiles.

The visits usually last around an hour and are just a chance for the client to socialise & feel part of their community. Nationally, suicide is the biggest cause of death in people aged between 25 and 44. But only a third (30 per cent) of those who took their own life had sought help from mental health professionals.

some of the myths and reach out to the most vulnerable in society.

Befriending Scheme We receive referrals from health and social care staff, families or friends. Usually the people that we are asked to befriend are over 60, living alone and often isolated. Some people I have visited haven’t spoken to anyone for days. We visit each person and then match them up with a volunteer with similar interests. The visits usually last around an hour and are just a chance for the client to socialise & feel part of their community. Volunteer Befrienders We meet with all potential befrienders to discuss the scheme in more depth. We arrange for befrienders to have a police check, take up two references & organise a 2 hour training session which looks at confidentiality, boundaries, lone

Paul Burling and Dawson Chance are to join Craig Revel Horwood in Peter Pan! Following a sell-out run in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at The Orchard Theatre two years ago, Craig Revel Horwood will once again get his hook into the theatre’s pantomime as he returns in Peter Pan! It has now been announced he will be joined on stage by comedy impressionist Paul Burling and much-loved ventriloquist, actor and comedian Dawson Chance.

Craig Revel Horwood previously starred in The Orchard Theatre’s 2011 pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and this year will play the dastardly villain Captain Hook in Peter Pan which will be staged by Qdos Entertainment, the world’s biggest pantomime producer. “After five pantomime seasons in the role of the Wicked Queen and terrifying poor Snow White, I’m delighted to set my sights on Neverland in pursuit of Peter Pan,” says Craig. “I had such a great time in the production of Snow White at The Orchard Theatre two years ago and I am thrilled to be returning for another Christmas season next year,” Craig added. Craig is a well-known face on television in the UK and all over the world as a judge on all eleven series of BBC One’s multiaward-winning programme Strictly Come Dancing. He also regularly appears on BBC Two´s It Takes Two with Zoe Ball. Paul Burling is one of the country’s best comedy impressionists and shot to fame when he reached the final of Britain’s Got Talent. Following his appearances on the show, he was fortunate enough to have his own show on ITV1 called It’s Paul Burling, which was aired on prime-time that Christmas, getting four million viewers! His other credits include Whatever Happened To Harry Hill? (Channel 4); Celebrity Who Wants

to Be a Millionaire? (ITV); Dick and Dom’s Hoopla! (BBC) and The Slammer (BBC), as well as a variety of panel shows and guest appearances. This year, Paul has been involved in his first feature film, playing the father of Harry Hill and Matt Lucas in Harry Hill - the Movie. Dawson Chance’s versatility as a ventriloquist, actor and comedian has established him as a most popular performer. Dawson’s television credits are many. As well as taking the lead part in several TV commercials, he has had his own situation comedy series for ITV called Take a Chance, Dawson’s Funny Old Farm and a TV special for Canadian CBC, The Cinderella Gang. Dawson has also had numerous guest-star appearances on some of Britain’s top TV variety shows. Career highlights have been performing before Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip, Her Majesty The Queen Mother and HRH Princess Margaret in no less than three British Royal Command Variety Performances for BBC Television. Peter Pan runs at The Orchard Theatre between Friday 12th December 2014 and Saturday 3rd January 2015. This follows on from The Orchard Theatre’s most recent record-breaking pantomime, Cinderella, which starred Bradley Walsh. Theatre Director, Chris Glover, says: “Cinderella was a huge success for The Orchard Theatre with 94% of all seats sold during the run. We have been inundated with positive messages from customers who had a great time, and many immediately booked for next year!” For more information visit orchardtheatre.co.uk or call the Ticket Office on 01322 220000.

New World War One Medal for Dartford People Dartford Borough Council has confirmed that it is to issue a commemorative medal to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War One. The medal will be available to Dartford households with a connection or family history related to the Great War and residents will be invited to contribute to a book of remembrance. Dartford residents may obtain their medal in person (one per household) at the Civic Centre and Dartford Borough Museum during normal opening hours. Dartford Leader Jeremy Kite said, “It is touching to see how much interest surrounds this year’s centenary events and the Council wanted to offer a lasting memento of an event which changed the lives of so many Dartford families. The Dartford Borough Council Commemorative World War One medal is a simple but significant reminder of the sacrifice made by so many and I hope it will be valued by many Dartford households.”

Dhiren’s Automotive News In this edition we’ll look at a new face-lifted model car available next year, the bestselling UK model car and how to keep cool during the summer.

2015 Mazda MX-5 – The all-new Mazda MX-5 is the fourth generation. Despite its different look and all-new architecture, the new Mazda MX-5 retains similar characteristics to its predecessors: it is a lightweight, two-seat, soft-top sports car with a 50:50 weight distribution and powered through the rear wheels. The latest car has the most compact body of any Mazda MX-5 and is 100kg lighter than the last generation car. For the first time, the steering is electrically assisted. The only confirmation is that the MX-5 will have a direct-injection petrol engine linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, although is expected the range to eventually comprise 1.5 and 2.0-litre units producing around 130bhp and 165bhp respectively. Mazda has yet to release UK pricing for the car, but an entry-level figure of around £22,000 is likely at launch expected around late Summer 2015. 2015 Hyundai i20 – the new generation of the Hyundai i20 will get a more stylish three-door version in 2015, called the i20 Coupe, according to the manufacturers sketch release. They claim that the car will ‘combine driving fun, a

distinctive character and sporty refinement’. The Korean brand will hope that creating a funkier three-door edition (and even calling it i20 Coupe) will help to attract more of the types of buyers who often go for three-door editions: younger customers. It is expected the i20 Coupe to get the same line-up of engines as the five-door: a 1.2 petrol and three diesels - a 1.1 with 74bhp and a 1.4 with 89bhp or 99bhp. Hyundai has indicated that the i20 Coupe will follow soon after the five-door’s arrival in May 2015. 2015 Volvo XC90 – This is the brand new Volvo XC90. 4x4s just got interesting. this model is really quite attractive, with its ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights, chunky, utilitarian silhouette and big, sweeping rear lights. Its new chassis also allows Volvo lots of flexibility too and promises to give “the agility of a much smaller and lower car”, The range-topping Twin Engine model will carry the T8 badge and, says Volvo, “be a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car rolled into one”. It uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine to power the front wheels and an 80bhp electric motor to drive the rear wheels. The most popular model in Europe is expected to be the XC90 D5, which has 225bhp and four-wheel drive. Deliveries of the new car are expected to being in May 2015.

Five-year plan for healthcare will see more local people treated in the community A five-year plan for transforming healthcare in the Dartford, Gravesend and Swanley area has been revealed by NHS Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The vision shows how the CCG will change the way healthcare works to better cater for the needs of the area, specifically the ageing population. The group will also aim to give patients better access to healthcare professionals outside of normal working hours. Between now and 2019, the CCG plans include: • Joined-up health and care teams in GP practices and the community to make sure people are treated in the right place and avoid unnecessary trips to hospital. • Improved community facilities for specialist eye and skin conditions. • Reviewing the service for people who need a doctor when surgeries are closed in the evening or at weekends. • Better support for people with poor mental health to

manage their conditions, return to work and maintain a normal life within their community. • Improved services for children with a community children’s nursing service to make sure children and young people receive the right care in the right setting for them. Dr Elizabeth Lunt, deputy clinical accountable officer for the CCG, said: “The CCG has a five-year plan to make sure our patients’ needs are at the heart of what we do. We will review it annually but it shows there are several areas which we will focus on over the next few years to make sure our healthcare system works better for patients” “Our population is growing and more people are living with an increasing number of health problems that can be managed in the community and not necessarily in a hospital” “We will focus on providing the right care, at the right time, in the right place. All parts of the health and care system should work together, providing a joined-up service.”

Strength Training - Why you should do it

F I T N E S S

For most people using the gym, their main focus tends to be on getting bigger muscles, or burning fat. While these are both worthwhile pursuits, there is generally a huge lack of attention paid to strength training. This is what’s going to help you find everyday tasks easier. Picking the kids up, carrying the shopping, and getting out of a chair unassisted into old age! Regardless of your other goals, you should be including strength work in your training regime. The benefits, beyond the obvious (being stronger) are worth the effort. It’ll help with building muscle; it’ll help with burning fat; it’ll help improve your cardiovascular fitness; and it’ll make you feel great!

Women especially are guilty of skipping this type of training in fear of becoming “too muscular” - let me tell you something: It won’t happen with 1 or 2 strength workouts per week, PLUS (and this is a newsflash for most men in the gym) heavy weights don’t make you big! Lifting heavy weights is more about activating the muscle fibres you already have and making them more efficient, and denser (want to “tone up”???). Obviously, use common sense. It goes without saying that if you’re using maximal weights, your technique needs to be excellent. I strongly recommend you find a trainer who knows what they’re doing to show you how to perform the exercises correctly before you start loading

One of Kent’s longest established theatre groups is planning a triumphant return to Dartford’s Orchard Theatre later this year.

Stick to the main exercises - Squats, Deadlifts, Chinups, Pull-Ups, Overhead Presses, Rows. These are all compound exercises (they use a LOT of muscles), meaning they’ll burn more energy (great for fat loss) and get your entire body working as one, rather than isolating a few muscles with smaller exercises like bicep curls.

Dartford Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (DAODS) has been performing in the area for more than a century, and the past 12 months have been among its busiest. “Staging a musical is a huge undertaking, both technically and artistically, and this will be our fifth in the past year,” said society chairman Dave Hughes. “Aside from the people on stage, there are dozens who work tirelessly on lights, sound, costumes, set building and ticket sales to support our productions, plus all of the other jobs needed to keep the society running.” DAODS’ current show is the much-loved musical Half a Sixpence, which will see a cast of over 50 adults from Dartford and the surrounding area take to the Orchard stage in October.

Strength will help with all of your other training goals. If you’re training for size, you’ll be able to lift heavier weights and stress the muscles more. If you’re training for fat loss, you’ll be able to activate more muscle to burn more calories. If you’re training for sports/running, you’ll be helping prevent injuries as well as improve performance. There really is no downside to strength training. Do YOU need it? If you can’t complete simple bodyweight exercises - Pushups... Pull-Ups... carrying the suitcase up the stairs at the airport... standing up without using your hands... then YES! And if you can do all of those things easily enough - there’s still no valid reason that getting stronger won’t be beneficial!

Show Off Your Ba(r)king Skills and Host the Purr-fect Tea party for BatterseA Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is inviting animal lovers everywhere to combine their passion for pets with their love of fondant fancies and host their very own Battersea Tea Party. The tea parties will take place around the country on Friday 24th October and money raised from donations and cake sales will help Battersea care for and rehome thousands of dogs and cats every year. Party hosts have an option of two themes. For the felinefanatic who enjoys afternoon teas with finesse and elegance, there is the cat-themed party and for the dog lover who enjoys nothing more than to scoff their scones and slurp their tea, there is a dog-themed party. Whether the theme is cat or dog, the tea parties are a fantastic way to get people together, enjoy some homemade baking and make a real difference to the lives of animals looking for new homes.

It costs almost £12.7 million every year to care for Battersea’s animals, and money raised by the tea parties will go towards helping nearly 10,000 dogs and cats a year that arrive at Battersea’s three centres in South London, Old Windsor in Berkshire and Brands Hatch in Kent. As Battersea Dogs & Cats Home receives no central government funding, the centres rely on the generosity and support of the public to help care for lost and abandoned dogs & cats. Miriam Goodall, Battersea’s Community Fundraising Manager said, “For our first ever Battersea Tea Party we want the public to party in the style of their pets. Whether you love dogs, cats or cakes (or all three), our Battersea Tea Parties are a great way to bring people together and most importantly, the donations raised will help us continue to provide our dogs and cats with the love, care and attention they need to start over

DAODS heads back to the Orchard with a ‘flash bang, wallop’ of a show

up the weights. A structured programme will have you seeing strength gains fast.

Please mention Dartford Living when contacting our advertisers

The show follows the story of Arthur Kipps, an orphan who unexpectedly inherits a fortune and climbs the social ladder before losing everything and realising that you just can’t buy happiness. Among its well-known songs are Half a Sixpence, Normal Working Day and, most famously, Flash, Bang, Wallop. The show was originally written as a star vehicle for Tommy Steele, explained director Alex Freeman. “For example, in one of the songs, Money to Burn, Kipps is passed a banjo to start playing and this would have played to Tommy Steele’s strengths. However, a tour by Bill Kenwright a few years ago made some fairly large-scale changes in order to incorporate more chorus numbers to give the show a better balance. This is much better for us because it means there’s plenty for everybody to get involved with.” DAODS’ return to the Orchard marks the end of a challenging

time for the society. The 1,000-seat theatre had become its second home since it opened in 1982, with at least two productions staged there every year. However, after performing Carousel in April 2013, DAODS had to take the difficult decision to leave the Orchard due to financial constraints. Recent shows have been staged at the society’s own, smaller premises.

“We absolutely didn’t want to take a break from performing on such a big stage but, with productions costing up to £40,000 a show, the reality was that we just couldn’t afford to continue with two shows per year,” said Hughes. “There was a time when we weren’t sure if we would ever be able to return to the Orchard, but after a really successful year we’re now looking forward to going back there in October with Half a Sixpence. We’ve also already booked our slot for 2015, and we’re now selecting what that show will be.” Half a Sixpence is being performed from 22nd - 25th October at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford. The Underwater Waterfall is one of the most astonishing sights on planet earth. And what’s even more astounding about it, is the fact that it isn’t a real waterfall, but simply an optical illusion! This visually deceiving impression is created in the water due to the runoff of sand and silt deposits. The reason for this is that the island is relatively new and a formation of it is still present, causing an underwater slope. The illusion is especially stunning in aerial shots. In fact, it can even be seen on Google Maps. The illusion is visible from boat level as well, while from other perspectives, the ocean appears to be a spectacular gamut of greens, blues, and whites, creating the false impression that it plummets down like a raging waterfall. Despite being unreal, it nonetheless makes for an enchanting scene!

The Underwater Waterfall is one of the most astonishing sights on planet earth. And what’s even more astounding about it, is the fact that it isn’t a real waterfall, but simply an optical illusion! This visually deceiving impression is created in the water due to the runoff of sand and silt deposits. Normally, once parents of staff, it is very difficult to be able to do something as fast are involved, it tends to stop. But I really try to get the as students and parents would like. students to work it out first, as young people need to learn Verbal bullying is when the bully uses words to cause the skills to solve their own problems (obviously it depends upset which could involve taunting, teasing, focussing on on how serious the bullying is, it may be referred straight someone’s appearance, lifestyle choice, personality, anything to our bullying policy). really! A lot of bullies do it as it makes themselves feel better A useful website: http://www.stopbullying.gov/what-isbringing someone else down. bullying/definition/ Emotional bullying or what I call ‘girl bullying’, as it mainly
