Dear Readers,

A big September hello from everyone at Dartford Living! We hope you enjoy this month’s expanded magazine, with more pages than ever before. As usual this month’s edition is jam packed with lots of local information and local businesses. Please support as many as you can “use them or lose them!” Don’t forget that we run Dartford Living alongside volunteer members of the local community FOR the local community. Dartford Living is YOUR magazine, the only independently run magazine serving the local area with information, fun, good news and positive local stories! Feel free to get in touch if you would like to write an article for the magazine. If writing is not for you then perhaps you could volunteer to deliver 100 or so magazines to your local roads - you will guarantee your copy of the magazine and get a little exercise as well! We deliver to thousands of homes and businesses in the local area, however if you don’t receive a copy directly through your door, you can pick up a copy from various drop off points. These include Dartford Football Club, numerous local libraries, Darent Valley Hospital, Stephen Oliver Art Gallery, numerous health centres and all of the local Barclays branches. The ‘Previous Editions’ section of the Dartford Living website (www.dartfordliving.com) also includes electronic versions of Dartford Living magazine. Additionally, if you email editor@dartfordliving.com we will add you to our newsletter email mailing list and contact you just once a month with an electronic copy of Dartford Living! Over 4,000 local people already do this!

Leaders are Readers - Dartford

Supplementary Education: What’s all the Fuss? Saturday Schools and supplementary tuition is providing a bridge for many parents and pupils, to make possible their academic goals that are beyond existing mainstream provision. Parents are investing in supplementary education to • Plug learning gaps • Inequalities in standards of teaching and resources from one school to another. • Extra practise in specific ‘problem’ subject areas • Many parents’ don’t get a real choice about which school their child will be allocated a place • Preparation for entrance exams to selective schools • Schools that are high in the league tables are very sought after, so competition for places is fierce. Many parents’ experience this process as ‘a lottery’, depending on whether their address is in the ‘right’ catchment area for a leading state school. In response, supplementary tuition is now viewed by parents, as a solution and becoming significantly popular. Why Choose Leaders are Readers Dartford • Leaders are Readers help develop positive study habits and attitude to learning • Our programmes (Reading, Mathematics and English (Language sense) and our methods provide pupils with opportunities to develop self-confidence and higher aspirations for themselves. • Saturday school can empower gifted students to develop their skills and talents as they are given an outlet to learn topics more advanced than their school years. • Those with learning difficulties are exposed to a new learning environment where research-based teaching strategies create additional opportunities for them to learn. • Pupils will be learning core content information that may be omitted at regular school due to a variety of constraints that teachers increasingly face. • We incorporate many teaching methods including technology, children are able to carry on learning between Saturday lessons through worksheets and online courses provided 24/7 free of charge. • Tutors who teach at our Saturday schools love teaching

20

for a few reasons namely; it’s often calmer; much less formal with smaller class size. Therefore teachers tend to be more relaxed themselves. Teaching in this context also lends itself to be more strategic and thorough. Children enjoy an experience more akin to private school. • Regular parent-tutor consultations establish great parent-school partnerships: keeping our parents informed and enabling them to play a very hands-on-role in their child’s education. • The culture of our schools offers a healthy learning environment which can be felt as a palpable and visible reality. Like-minded parents who share a commitment for their children to thrive generate a positive learning attitude in their children, which further strengthens our exemplary educational settings Call now to enrol your child into Saturday school and to book a trial class 01992 651 300, or email info@leadersarereaders.co.uk, www.leadersarereaders. co.uk. 5% discount available with this publication. DARTFORD LIVING MEETS....... BY KELLY GOLDSWORTHY Continuing with our series about local people, Kelly Goldsworthy met Sally-Anne Geraghty from Bexley and Dartford Samaritans.

A retired secretary and Dartford resident for ten years, Sally-Anne has been a Samaritans volunteer for 21 years. She explained why she initially became involved: ‘At the time I had temporarily given up work, because of health problems and I really wanted to commit to something. I went along to the Selection Day not knowing too much about the work and left really wanting to do it.’ Sally-Anne told us about the selection and work of Samaritans: ‘The recruitment process is tough. It starts with a Selection Day where a team of experienced Samaritans get to know the new volunteers and they get to know us. After training a new Samaritan will spend at least eight weeks on the phones with a mentor and then will have someone with them for a while until they are ‘fully fledged’. The basic expectation for a Samaritan volunteer in our branch is four hours a week and one overnight shift every eight weeks. The training courses can take up a fair bit of time. The main work is talking to people on the phone, but we also answer emails and SMS messages and see people face to face. As a volunteer there are also other things you can do. Over the years I’ve taken roles including being on the Training Team helping to prepare new volunteers and on the Management Committee, which keeps our branch running smoothly. I’ve also given talks to other organisations about Samaritans work.’ Discussing why she had continued with Samaritans for

so long Sally-Anne said ‘Volunteering, for me, has been wonderful. It is a great feeling to be there for someone, to be a friendly voice for someone going through a tough time. When you get a call and at the end of it you can hear that perhaps a person sounds a bit better - that’s an amazing feeling. I really have got more from being a Samaritan than I’ve given. When I joined I never would have guessed it would have given me so much. I never imagined I’d be able to stand in a room and talk to a group of people. The other bonus is I’ve made some amazing friends. I’m a different and better person for having become a Samaritan. It really has enhanced my life.’

Kids Zone

Max's Makerspace By MicroHackers - A Dartford Edtech Startup

Multiplication with lines Materials: • 1 x Piece of paper • 1 x Pencil

Details: Do you need to multiply two big numbers, but you haven't got a calculator? This is how to do it visually. We will multiply 24 by 12 in this example. Instructions: 1. Start by drawing two upwards sloping diagonal lines, then four upwards sloping diagonal lines (the red lines). This represents 24. 2. Next draw one downwards sloping diagonal line, then two downwards sloping diagonal lines (the blue lines). This represents 12. 3. Starting at the left count the number of times the the lines cross (the light blue shaded elipse). In this case they cross 2 times. 4. Next count the number of times the lines cross in the middle section (the orange shaded elipse). In this case they cross 8 times. 5. Finally count the number of times the lines cross in the right section (the green shaded elipse). In this case they cross 8 times. 6. And there is your answer.

24 x 12 = 288 Information: Don't forget, if the number of times the lines cross is greater than 10 you need to carry the one, just the same as you do when you are adding.

Time to put your affairs in order?

Thinking about what you want to happen if you die can be very difficult but we all want to feel secure in the knowledge that your wishes would be carried out. Fortunately I was able to find Susan Norris at Dartford Legal Services Limited. Susan is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and has run a small Will writing business since 2005. Susan is also a member of the Institute of Professional Willwriters who work under a Code of Practice regulated by the Trading Standards Council and has 2 million pounds of Professional Indemnity Insurance. Unlike a lot of the traditional law firms, the service Susan offers is far more personal. She was able to come around to the house, which was a lot more convenient when I have a two year old to consider! This also made me feel a lot more relaxed when discussing what I wanted in my Will. Susan asked a number of questions whilst taking our initial instructions which made sure she covered a lot of scenarios that I hadn’t even considered until I met her . Susan then took the information and within just a few days sent me a draft Will by email (although I do understand she can do this by post as well). I requested a few minor amendments and I also had a few questions but these were swiftly dealt with. All my questions were answered in detail and my Will thoroughly explained. I was happy with the service and would recommend it. I know I feel a lot more secure in the knowledge that there is a detailed Will in case anything were to happen to me. At the end of the transaction Susan also makes sure that any Will is properly signed and dated infront of two witnesses and can offer advice on secure storage. In addition to wills and probate Dartford Legal Services Limited can also provide assistance with conveyancing work as Susan is a Licensed Conveyancer and is regulated by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers. This means she is able to carry out some small, either residential or commercial conveyancing transactions, such as cash purchases, sales of properties, transfers of equity, however, not any mortgage work at present. This ties in with writing Wills as she can offer advice on how a property should be owned to suit particular circumstances. As she is also a

Argan Oil – So What’s All the Fuss? By local resident Sarah Crook

Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Madonna and Selena Gomez are all reputed to love Argan Oil, but what is it? Argan Oil is derived from the Argan Tree – Argania Spinosa. It is indigenous to south western Morocco and it’s believed to be one of the few surviving species from the tertiary period 65 million years ago The oil is produced from the kernels of the Argan Tree. For centuries the Moroccan people have also used the oil medicinally and cosmetically The extraction of the kernels is key to the production process. Workers first dry argan fruit in the open air… Next the nut is cracked to obtain the kernels. Workers still do it by hand—making it a time-consuming, labourintensive process. This task is often carried out by local women. I’m not sure they’d find many volunteers in Dartford, including me! At present, argan oil production supports approximately 2.2 million people in the main Argan Oil producing region.

Much of the oil produced today is made by a number of women’s co-operatives. Employment in the co-operatives provides women with an income, which many have used to fund education for themselves or their children. It has also provided them with a degree of autonomy in a traditionally male-dominated society and has helped many become more aware of their rights. Argan Oil is rich in vitamin E. It is also rich in fatty acids to combat dry skin and help heal and soothe. Fantastic for the treatment of scars and stretch marks. Tayri’s House was set up in spring 2015. Based locally, and with family connections in the Argan tree region, decided to start supplying Argan Oil products. We stock competitively priced products including soap and body moisturiser as well as pure oil. Please have a look at our website and feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We regularly hold parties in the comfort of your own home or we can bring our products to your door. www.tayrishouse.com www.tayrishouse@gmail.com

World Suicide Prevention Day - 10th September World Suicide Prevention Day is an global initiative aimed at increasing awareness of suicide and aiding in its prevention, as well as assisting families bereaved by suicide. According to the Mental Health Foundation around 4,000 people end their own lives in England each year, that is one death every two hours and at least ten times this attempt to take their own lives. People may experience suicidal thought for a number of reasons but it is important to understand that many people who do, do not want to take their own life because they want to die, but as a means of escaping from the way they are feeling. The Bexley and Dartford Samaritans branch, run by

The Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury, are appealing for more cyclists to take on the challenging climbs and stunning scenery in their own unique cycling event, the London to Canterbury Cycle Challenge. The route has been put together by professional Cycling Support Services, and is both fully marshalled and well signposted. To mark the anniversary the RAF Benevolent Fund, the RAF’s leading welfare charity, is launching the Great British Sunday Lunch - the new national fundraising event aimed at getting families and friends back around the dinner table. Whether it is a full-on roast dinner with all the trimmings or a favourite curry, the Fund is asking supporters to get together and host a Sunday lunch on Sunday 13th September to raise vital funds. What better way to pay tribute to those who have served their country than by serving up some delicious food? By supporting the RAF Benevolent Fund, diners will be supporting work to assist veterans, serving personnel and their families who are facing challenges in their

Miskin Radio Donation Fomer Mayor Cllr Avtar Sandhu MBE presents a £1,000 donation to North West Kent College’s Miskin Radio. For the last year Miskin Radio students have been in support of the Mayor of Dartford’s Charity Appeal 2014/2015. Every month 1st year students on the Creative Media Production course would interview the Mayor and promote his work within charity and publicise his events. The students were even able to attend some of the events that are linked to his charities such as the Christmas light switch on, St George’s day parade and the former Mayor’s very own ice bucket challenge. Miskin Radio students were also able to raise the profile of charities linked to the Mayor through interviews and air time.

The Mayor supports 34 charities and a staggering £52,000 in money and donations in-kind has been raised throughout the Mayors charity events. The funds raised will help each charity to continue to deliver their aims and objectives to help the community. The money donated to Miskin Radio will be used to produce continual content for the local community across the North West Kent area. Andrew Sayers, Curriculum Manager for Media states “This money will enable us to continue to offer voluntary and community organisations free on-air promotional adverts and interviews to help them raise their profile”.

Former Mayor Cllr Avtar Sandhu MBE states “I would like to thank all the students involved for their promotional efforts for the charity events and their professionalism when undertaking the monthly interviews”. in advertising? Business and Dhiren’s Automotive News Automotive In this edition we’ll look at new models/ versions from Audi and Toyota available later this year/ early next and a new plan to lower London’s emission.

2015 Toyota Mirai

Toyota has revealed more information on its upcoming hydrogen-powered car, which will be called Toyota Mirai. The model was previously known as the FCV. It is a standalone five-door, four-seat hatchback model that offers a boot capacity of around 360 litres. Final specification for Europe is not yet confirmed, as it is available in Japan, but it is expected to come with climate control, a rear parking camera, satellite-navigation, LED headlights and manmade leather upholstery. Toyota believes it can popularise 30 Please mention Dartford Living hydrogen as a fuel just as it has pioneered hybrid technology in the past 16 years. The name Mirai means ‘future’ in Japanese. The first few examples arrived in the UK on the second week of August to prepare for the model’s official launch in September - only 11 will be available this year and potentially 50 next. Prices are not yet announced. New 597bhp Audi S8 Plus revealed

A more powerful version of the Audi S8, called the S8 Plus, is set to go on sale in the UK from January. Audi claims the 597bhp super-saloon will become the “pinnacle of sporty performance” in the luxury car class. Powering the S8 Plus is the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine used by the standard 513bhp S8, but with power boosted by 84bhp.

38

Audi claims the S8 Plus can reach 62mph from rest in 3.8sec - making it the fastest S8 model yet. The standard features list has been increased for the S8 Plus to include ambient lighting, full leather interior, power-assisted doors and a DVD player. The car sits on 21in alloy wheels. Rivals include the Mercedes-AMG S63, which produces 577bhp from its twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 engine. The S8 Plus is priced from £97,700 - almost £17,000 more than the standard S8. London Mayor launches new ultra-low emissions plan

London Mayor Boris Johnson has unveiled a ‘delivery plan’ to prepare the capital’s road users for the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ), which goes live in the centre of the capital from 7 September 2020. The ULEZ scheme – which covers the same area as the congestion charge zone - will require all cars, motorcycles, vans, minibuses, coaches and heavy good vehicles to meet minimum emissions and pollution standards as part of an attempt to radically improve air quality in the centre of the capital. The most ambitious part of the plan involves diesel vehicles. From 2020, only Euro 6-rated diesel vehicles will be allowed into the ULEZ zone without charge. Cars, vans and minibuses that are not Euro 6 rated can pay a £12.50 daily charge to enter the ULEZ zone, but this will be on top of the congestion charge, which currently costs £11.50 per day. Transport for London (TfL) says HGVs, buses and coaches that are not Euro 6 compatible will be charged £100 per day to enter the ULEZ zone on top of the daily congestion charge. The London Fire Brigade will also replace its support cars for electric vehicles by 2016 and is calling on manufacturers to ‘bring forward’ technology that would allow zero-emission fire engines.

Tips for small businesses Each month Paul Conradi, Chartered Accountant at Conradi Morrison & Co, will be giving us his professional advice for small businesses..

Inheritance Tax Inheritance Tax applies on the value of any estate above £325,000 or £650,000 for a couple. If the total assets are valued above the thresholds, which has been frozen since April 2009, then a 40% tax charge will apply on the total above this amount. It should be noted that the estate, when valuing for Inheritance Tax should include all assets in the UK and abroad including, shares in properties as well as jewellery and any gold held. The jewellery and gold would need to be valued for Inheritance Tax purposes by a professional valuer. Certain gifts made seven years prior to death will need to be brought into the Inheritance Tax account. You can give up to £250 per year to as many people as you like, for the gift to fall immediately outside your estate. If you pass more than this to an individual in a given tax year, even by a penny, the whole sum goes towards your annual tax free £3000 gift allowance. If the £3000 is not used in a year, it can be carried forward for one year. That is to say you can give away £6000 in one tax year, if you do not use any of your allowance in the previous year. If you give away more than £3000 in one tax year and you do not live for seven years, the excess will eat into your nil band allowance of £325,000. You can contribute as much as you like from surplus income. If you are given more than £3000 away, you should make a note of where it is coming from to show that it is from your income and not from your savings. If appropriate care is taken, you can give as much as you like from income providing that you are left with sufficient income to sustain your usual standard of living.

Wedding gifts are also exempt. Each parent can give up to £5000 to a child who is getting married, while a grandparent can give up to £2500 and anyone else can give £1000. The Budget created a new relief for family homes to be introduced in April 2017 for deaths on or after that date. It will be introduced in phases, starting at £100,000 in 2017/18 and rising to £175,000 by 2020/21. For a couple, the £175,000 plus the existing £325,000 each, can add up to a maximum relief of £1million. The amount available will be the lower of the net value of the property and the maximum amount of the main residence nil rate tax band. The net value of the property is calculated after deducting liabilities such as a mortgage. The property will qualify if it has been the deceased’s residence at some point. The property must be left to lineal descendants ie children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren etc. (Children include step-children and adopted children). The relief is transferable, so the estate of the second spouse to die can benefit from the main residence nil rate band of their deceased spouse, regardless of when that spouse died. The relief will be tapered away for estates with a net value over £2million, at a rate of £1 for every £2 over that limit. The relief will be available where a person has sold a main residence in order to downsize or to realise a capital sum, eg to pay care home fees. The main residence nil rate band can be used against assets in the estate of an equivalent value to the home which was sold. As your local Accountant, I would be very glad to meet you and discuss the possibility of tax planning in your business. For more information, please see page two of this month’s Dartford Living and feel free to call me on 01322 278188 to arrange a meeting without charge.

Strength Training for the elderly?

F I T N E S S

Most people as they get older tend to do less, exercisewise. “I’m not as young as I used to be”, “I’m not that fit any more”, and “It gets harder as you get older”… The usual excuses arise, but the only quote that really comes into play here is “Use it or lose it”. The less you move, the less you’ll be able to move. Your body adapts to the stresses imposed on it – basically meaning you can do the things you’re used to doing. When you stop doing something, your body will get weaker, tighter, stiffer etc. Used to be able to do the splits? You didn’t wake up one day suddenly unable to do them… You stopped doing them, so your body adapted. Used to be strong? You stopped using that strength and gradually your body realised it didn’t need it anymore, so it went. Along with good nutrition, the most important thing you can do as you get older is stay strong; otherwise you’ll be the person who needs help getting out of a chair, struggles with stairs, or can’t open a bottle of water! It stands to reason: If you’re beginning to struggle climbing the stairs – practice climbing the stairs! If you’re young, start and/or keep up your strength training, or you’ll regret it later on. If you’ve already noticed an “age-related” (or really, lack-of-use-related) decline in strength or mobility, do

something about it NOW. It’s never too late. Be sensible, but do something. Yoga would be a great way to deal with mobility issues and you can start at any level/ability and work from there. For strength (easily as important as any other aspect), the same applies. Can’t get in and out of a chair? Start with that! Gradually increase the difficulty of what you’re doing making the movements more complex, and gradually adding weight. Building your strength will not only keep you active and mobile, it’ll also keep you stable (less likely to fall), and make your bones stronger (less likely to break if you do fall). People tend to think strength training is just for the young and fit, but it’s not; it’s for everyone – and if you don’t want to get stronger, you seriously need to re-think things. There’s no downside to being stronger! You don’t have to lift huge weights (although as heavy as you can with good technique is a good way to go); even if you lift a light weight for 10 reps, if you increase that to 11 reps, you’ve increased strength. Then try 12, or 13… you see the pattern. If you can, increase the weight and start again! Never stop. If you’re not working to get stronger, you’re getting weaker. How far will you let it go?

Gardening Hints and Tips - September Protect fruit trees Now’s the time to apply grease bands around the trunks of fruit trees to prevent damage later on from wingless winter moths. Carefully rubbing off any loose bark will remove hiding places for other pests. To kill over-wintering pest eggs use Growing Success Winter Wash when all the leaves have dropped. Spray peaches and nectarines to help protect against peach leaf curl Finally, always pick up all fallen diseased leaves and destroy them. September tidy up September is a great time to make the most of your garden while the good weather lasts. Add extra supports to plants that have grown well during the summer, keep treating for pests and slugs – they don’t need to get any fatter! And it’s a great time to clean your paths and patios. Use path weed killers to clear pesky weeds and specialist patio cleaning tools and products to clear moss and green algae. Spring bedding Plug any gaps in the garden with spring bedding plants. Chose from wallflowers, bellis daisies, forget-me-not, winter-flowering pansies, violas, hardy primulas and polyanthus. And remember to add some spring-flowering bulbs too. Summer bedding For a splash of early summer colour next year, sow Californian poppies, annual poppies, godetia, larkspurs and a number of other hardy annuals now. Simply sow them where you want them to flower in soil that has been improved with compost or composted bark. Autumn planting Autumn is nature’s natural time for planting. We have a wide range of hardy trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, roses and climbers in stock. Dig in plenty of compost, composted bark,

tree & shrub planting compost or other bulky soil improvers, and add a slow release fertiliser, such as bonemeal, or controlled-release fertiliser to the soil to improve root growth and fast establishment. Make sure all plants are well watered before and after planting. Autumn lawn care Liven up your lawn by removing the build up of dead grass, moss and other debris with a spring tine rake or powered scarifier. Then aerate the soil with a hollow-tine aerator or garden fork and add a lawn top dressing. Then apply a granular autumn lawn feed or, feed, weed and mosskiller. Finally re-seed any gaps with the correct lawn seed mix. Buy autumn planting bulbs You can’t beat spring-flowering bulbs for a splash of colour and now’s the time to plant them. Buy early to ensure the best choices from our extensive range – there’s something for everyone. To get the best from your bulbs, plant with compost, well-rotted manure or composted bark and a slow-release or controlled-release fertiliser and remember to label the planting position, so you know where they are. Composting Don’t throw away your spent bedding plants, kitchen waste and other plant material – turn them into valuable compost for improving your soil and mulching your beds and borders. Even those fallen tree leaves can be turned into leafmould. Makinggood compost and leafmould is easy with our wide range of compost bins, compost and leafmould accelerators, leaf rakes and collectors. in association with

Local Sports News Dartford Chess club has been running for over 100 years. It was formed in 1913 and met every Monday evening at Shaftesbury Terrace, which was part of Hythe Street near where the post office now stands. The club secretary was J E Prentis who lived at 115 The Brent. In April 1914, R H Stevenson and S J Holloway of the club, organised an international tournament which attracted distinguished players from all over the world including Dr Isador Gunsberg, Sir George Thomas and Dr Edward Lasker who, at that time, were ranked amongst the top 20 players in the world. The annual general meeting of Kent County Chess Association was held immediately prior to the tournament. The tournament was held at the Central Wesleyan Hall and commenced on Easter Monday, April 12 finishing on April 17th. During the week various arrangements for the entertainment of visitors were made. On Tuesday, the vicar of Dartford conducted a party around the 12th century parish church explaining the many points of historical interest, whilst on Wednesday, Edward Lasker gave an interesting lecture on strategy in chess. On the Friday evening the members of the congress were entertained at the Wellcome Club, where the Philharmonic Society gave a fine concert conducted by Dr H Jowett and held in the Gymnasium. In 1930 the club met every Thursday evening at The Commercial Hotel in Hythe Street and we believe the hotel was the same venue as the earlier Shaftesbury Hotel. The club secretary was E H Byrne of 14 Westview Road and ten members are listed in the Southern Counties Year Book for that year including P H Sullivan who played in the 1914 tournament and who continued to be a member until the late1960s. We believe DCC was disbanded at the outbreak of World War 2 but we do know that in 1945 when Mr J Outen of 28 Cedar Road was secretary, the club met at Suttons Hall in the High Street every Wednesday evening. At that time 21 members were listed. Mr P H Sullivan, a vice president of Kent County Chess Assossiation who had played in the original tournament in 1914 and was a founding member of the club continued to be a member. Sullivan Close in Shepherds Lane is named after him in commemoration of many years service as the sub post office manager in

Shepherds Lane. The club met in the Old Canteen of West Hill Hospital for 40 years until 1998, when the site was redeveloped, and has grown steadily since that point with an active membership of nearly 20 players. For the 2013/14 season the club has entered 4 teams in the Kent County Chess league and many of the our members also play for the County teams. The club now meets every Thursday evening, but not during July and August, at St Anselms Parish Church Hall (upstairs room) where we host visiting teams and play internal competitions.

Bav’s Sporting Comment Fear not those of you that have been waking up with cold sweats of late, for the wait is over. The Premier League is back. All those arduous days without top flight football has seen grown men break down in IKEA and whimper at the prospect of another Saturday afternoon engaging in conversation, rather than chanting on the stands. Who will finish higher in the league - Dartford or Ebbsfleet? Will it be Man City and Chelsea fighting it out for the title? After a long hiatus, will Arsenal mount a serious challenge for the title again, after their purchase of Petr Cech from Chelsea? Will Man Utd’s spending make them competitive to challenge their big city rivals? Will any of the newly promoted teams stay up? Which teams will creep into the UEFA cup spots? Who will win the FA Cup and Carling Cup? So many unanswered questions and so much excitement – whichever team you support. The beginning of the season brings with it hope with anything possible… until the first game where these hopes are either crushed and you’re brought down to reality with a bang or confirmed, and then you’re on cloud 9.

Dartford District Schools FA

Last season for the Dartford District primary schools representative team was one of change and progression.

being given the opportunity to impress for the girls and boys district squads for season 2016/17.

For the first time in district football history Dartford ran two representative teams, reached a cup final, had three players selected in Kent Schools u11 squad and crucially started development groups in school years 1-5 which saw us working with players on a weekly basis providing them with quality coaching through support from the Kent FA Skills Coaches while preparing and developing players and parents understanding of representative schools football. Our new year six squad is very strong and we hope to win a trophy during the coming season.

We will continue to run our weekly district development groups on Mondays for years 3/4 and Fridays for years 2/5 we aim to accommodate upto thirty-two players in each age group, of course they must all attend a Dartford primary school. Our new year 1 group will start in the near future and we have entered a girls team in the new girls district “super league.

Since 2011 when district football was relaunched by FA Skills Coach Darren Phillips with the support of Holy Trinity assistant headteacher Gemma Gold, Dartford Pre Academy director Phil Murray and Dartford FC Coach & District Manager Darren Corley it has gone from strength to strength. Of our 26 primary schools only six nominated players for season 2011/12, at the start of season 2014/15 that had increased to 23 schools. During the coming school year all twenty six schools will be offered free coaching support, with all year five pupils

44

Dartford FC will again host the annual schools tournament in October, we hope to see 26 boys teams and 26 girls teams in attendance, the winning Dartford schools will progress on to represent Dartford in the Kent schools champions cup. This year we will be looking for a sponsor for the tournaments, the facilities we are able to use at Dartford FC are fantastic and the organisation by Phil Murray and his Dartford coaches is first class.
