Performance Programme January-April 2011
It seems strange to be casting my mind forward to summer 2011, but as you’ll see on the facing page we’re announcing next year’s HOME festival and a limited number of early bird tickets (the perfect Christmas present!) are now on sale. We had lots of great feedback on last year and are planning changes in direct response to your thinking. Before then we’ve got another packed spring programme to welcome in the New Year. Our ShipWrites series continues with performances by Stuart Silver, Pencil Stringhorn, Matt Harvey and Molly Naylor; we’re exploring new music with a commission for two Devon train journeys and performances by Powerplant and Britten Sinfonia, will perform a piece by the new Summer School artistic director, John Woolrich. We’re also delighted to present Hetain Patel, whose creative journey has taken him from photography to performance; Mind the Gap, directed by former Dartington student Tim Wheeler; and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (p.17) as a late addition. Matthew Linley, Live Art Producer

Britten Sinfonia English Song Jacqueline Shave leader/director Mark Padmore tenor Stephen Bell horn The Britten Sinfonia is once again collaborating with celebrated British tenor Mark Padmore for our early spring orchestral concert. The centrepiece of the programme is Britten’s Serenade for tenor, horn and strings - a magical evocation of twilight and nightfall. Padmore will sing Purcell songs as realised by Tippett, whose Baroque inspired Little Music is also featured. Walton’s virtuosic and passionate Sonata for Strings provides the thrilling climax to this programme of English music. Mark has described how he relishes the orchestra’s “palpable sense of adventure” and “particular intimacy and mutual enthusiasm”, which will no doubt shine through in the wonderful surroundings of the Great Hall.

Tagore and his relevance for international environmental and social action today
Europe in Transition
Our Great Debates series continues Dartington’s long tradition of tackling the important issues of the day. This evening’s debate is combined with a networking dinner to enable further discussion of the topic between the speakers and audience.
The South West’s leading orchestra playing Baroque music in appropriate style on period instruments, directed by Margaret Faultless. The middle of the 18th Century was the age of the experimental, the fantastic and the exploratory. Across Europe, composers were experimenting with adventurous form and textures.
Speakers include the author and co-founder of Schumacher College, Satish Kuma; Nobel prize nominee Aruna Roy; and leading climate change activist Malini Mehta. Chaired by Charlie McConnell, Director of Schumacher College.
Boccherini Cello concerto in B flat (soloist: Sebastian Comberti)
2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, who was a huge influence for Leonard Elmhirst and the Dartington experiment. This debate will launch a year of activities across Dartington’s programmes, including the Tagore Festival in May (see p18).

Rip-roaring, foot-stomping, jazz-inflected klezmer and Balkan music from some of Scotland’s finest musicians.
You Look Like Ants & Pencil Stringhorn
An intoxicating, life-affirming mix of Eastern European dance music, Middle Eastern rhythms and virtuoso performances from some of the best instrumentalists that Scotland has to offer. Formed in Edinburgh in 2003, Moishe’s Bagel has toured England, Scotland, Ireland and Eastern Europe and is just as likely to be seen jamming in a late night jazz den or enthralling an upmarket concert hall as electrifying the main stage audience at a major festival. In the spirit of our HOME Festival this event is completely acoustic. Come along and be the first to hear news of the 2011 HOME line up. This is a seated event with space at the back of the auditorium for dancing.
A unique double bill of contemporary folk and spoken word presented by four outstanding artists. Direct from London’s Soho theatre, You Look Like Ants is an intimate, humorous, tragi-ballad from Perrier award-winning writer and performer Stuart Silver. A conversational and textually rich epic journey where Stuart seeks to get a hold on what life is all about, under the crush of great advice. Words and Music with South West Music School Students from South West Music School have been undertaking a three day residency exploring the links between words and music.
You Look Like Ants is followed by the mellow sounds of Pencil Stringhorn. Founded in 2009, and situated somewhere between roots manuva and Deptartment of Eagles, the band is an original, East London take on spoken word / folk. Featuring Joshua Idehen (Benin City) on vocals, Jon Cottle (Clare And the Reasons, Ana Silvera), on electric cello and Tom Leaper on saxophone. Stuart Silver and Pencil Stringhorn will also lead the South West Music School weekend residency programme on Words and Music.
Led by Stuart Silver and Pencil Stringhorn the residency has been inspired by the works of Rabindranath Tagore, whose 150th anniversary we are celebrating in 2011 with a year-long programme that includes festivals, debates, music, dance, theatre, a short course and an exhibition. Come and see the results of the students’ hard work over the weekend and share in the excitement of their journey. Powerplant
from Mind the Gap by Mike Kenny
24 Lies per second
An award-winning adaptation of Steinbeck’s extraordinary tale of friendship, loyalty and the power of dreams. George and Lennie are drifters who have only each other and their shared search for the American Dream. George is the sharp little guy who looks out for Lennie, his big-hearted pal who seems unable to keep out of trouble. Finding work on a ranch in California, they plan to stay long enough to buy a little place of their own, but their arrival triggers a tragic chain of events that threatens their dream.
Led by genre trashing virtuoso percussionist Joby Burgess (last seen at Dartington in the Graham Fitkin Band), British trio Powerplant explore hi-octane percussion-led music with an electronic sound, bespoke film and live visuals. Powerplant made its debut in July 2005, with a sell out performance at the Southbank Centre and has since performed extensively throughout the UK, Europe and beyond.

24 Lies per second includes a major new work (funded by the PRS for Music foundation) from experimental jazz composer and instrument builder Max de Wardener, inspired by film director Michael Haneke. Dominic Murcott and Matthew Fairclough explore the pre-pianola experiments of Conlon Nancarrow and the Amen Break - six seconds of drumming that changed the face of electronic music. There is also a rare performance of Steve Reich’s My Name Is. Composed in 1967, and making use of both the audience and live looping, Powerplant perform a specially revised version to celebrate the composers 75th birthday.

The Alternative Vote - a strong voice for the people? How will you vote in the referendum on 5 May? Do you have the information you need? Will AV eliminate the need for complicated tactical voting or make it more necessary than ever? What kind of system do you think is needed in the 21st century - and is the Alternative Vote the way to get there? Good information and illuminating, robust debate is rare. This second Great Debate of 2011 will help open up these questions and provide a chance to push for the information and system you need. A panel of four will set the context and explore the options. Lead debaters will include a senior Conservative ‘yes’ vote MP, a senior Lib Dem ‘no’ vote MP, an ‘alternative view’ politician and an academic who can help us make sense of the voting systems here and abroad. Come and join the Great Debate, which kicks off with a complementary drink and finger buffet at 6.30pm. The debate will start at 7pm.
An All Haydn programme including Te Deum in C Nelson Mass in D Minor The 150-strong Dartington Community Choir is one of the largest and best regarded in the region and its members are drawn from throughout South Devon.
