Another summer is upon us and only at the very last minute did our patience pay off with the news that Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life - its release controversially delayed in order to compete at Cannes - would be out in this programme. Only Malick’s fifth film in nearly 40 years, it went on to win the top prize at the festival and adds to that great filmmaker’s personal mythology. It might not be for everyone but it’s the closest thing to ‘great’ filmmaking you’ll see this year. With other new releases including Potiche and The Princess of Montpensier plus digitised classics such as Gilda and Last Year in Marienbad, who cares what the weather does. Enjoy the summer... enjoy the movies. Colin Orr, Film Programmer

Life in a Day
[12A]
Friday 1 July / 5pm Saturday 2 July / 8pm Sunday 3 July / 5pm Monday 4 July / 8pm Tuesday 5 - Thursday 7 July / 5pm Directors Kevin Macdonald, Jan Haubrich, Frederic Lumiere Documentary USA 2011 / Colour / 1hr 34m A documentary shot by filmmakers all over the world that serves as a time capsule to show future generations what it was like to be alive on one day in our history. The most elaborate crowdsourced arts project in history, YouTube’s surprisingly satisfying, sometimes thrilling Life in a Day draws from a huge pot of source material: 80,000 slice-of-life videos, comprising more than 4,500 hours of video, all shot on July 24, 2010. A team led by producer Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald edited the choice bits into a 90-minute feature film. While Life in a Day might seem like an expensive corporate stunt, the final product is a groundbreaking piece of cinematic assemblage which, rather than charting physical landscapes, prove expert at revealing emotional environments. The films cover heartbreak, marriage, war, confusion and love both unrequited and fulfilled. And Life is unafraid of death, featuring several poignant sequences exploring our mortality.

Senna
[12A]

The film follows Senna’s struggles both on track against his nemesis, Alain Prost, and off it, against the politics which infest the sport. Now revered as the greatest motor racing driver of all time and in Brazil as a saint.

Cricketing Legends - A Tale of Two Teams
From the Ashes
[12A]
Wednesday 6 July / 8pm Director James Erskine Documentary UK 2011 / Colour / 1hr 38m An uplifting and remarkable tale of a summer that changed English sport forever. In July 1981 rioting and discontent ruled the streets of England. On the playing fields, England was 1-0 down after two tests against old enemy, Australia, and iconic all-rounder Ian Botham had resigned as England’s captain. With English cricket on the brink, bookmakers offered odds of 500-1 against an English win in the third test. What happened next is cricketing legend.
Fire in Babylon
[12A]
Thursday 7 July / 8pm Director Stevan Riley Documentary UK 2010 / Colour / 1hr 27m Fire in Babylon is the breathtaking story of how the West Indies triumphed over its colonial masters through the achievements of one of the most gifted teams in sporting history. In a turbulent era of apartheid in South Africa, race riots in England and civil unrest in the Caribbean, the West Indian cricketers, led by the enigmatic Viv Richards, struck a wonderfully defiant blow at the forces of white prejudice worldwide, redefining the game on their own terms. 06
Potiche
[15]
Friday 8 - Thursday 14 July / 8pm Director Francois Ozon Cast Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu France 2011 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 42m
Francois Ozon’s Potiche is a satirical take on the war between the sexes and classes that has everything you could want from a 70’s set French movie - music, humour, irreverence and most irrisistably the pairing of Deneuve and Depardieu. Set in 1977 in a French provincial town, Potiche stars Deneuve as Suzanne, a submissive, housebound ‘trophy housewife’ who steps in to manage her wealthy husband's umbrella factory after the workers go on strike and take him hostage. To everyone’s surprise, she proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action helped, in no small way, by Depardieu’s union leader and Suzanne's former beau who still holds a flame for her. But when her husband returns from a restful cruise in top form, things get complicated... “All out sheer unadulterated fun” Screen Daily

The Princess of Montpensier
[15]
Friday 15 - Sunday 17 July / 8pm Monday 18 July / 5pm Tuesday 19 July / 8pm Wednesday 20 July / 5pm Thursday 21 July / 2pm Director Bertrand Tavernier Cast Melanie Thierry, Lambert Wilson France 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 19m Bertrand Tavernier is in top form with this gripping, superbly mounted drama set against the savage religious wars that ripped France apart in the 16th century. Based on a novella by the celebrated Madame de Lafayette, the action centres on the love of the beautiful Marie de Mezieres for her dashing cousin Henri de Guise, thwarted when her father’s political ambitions force her into marriage with the well-connected Philippe de Montpensier, who she has never met. When Philippe is called away to fight, she is left in the care of Count Chabannes, an aging nobleman with a disdain for warfare, and soon becomes exposed to the sexual and political intrigues of court. Almost a country cousin to Dumas’ La Reine Margot, this is a hugely engaging costume drama with superbly nuanced performances by all the cast.

The First Grader
[12A]
Monday 18 July / 8pm Tuesday 19 July / 5pm Wednesday 20 July / 8pm Director Justin Chadwick Cast Naomie Harris, Sam Feuer, Tony Kgoroge UK/USA/Kenya 2011 / Colour / 1hr 43m
This inspiring story of the power of education and the right to equality is set in Kenya in 2003, where Maruge, an 84-year-old village elder uses a government initiative to introduce free primary schooling to claim the education he has always craved. A former Mau-Mau fighter, Maruge's desire to learn to read and write has been sparked but when he presents himself at the local school gates, he finds head teacher Jane alone in being sympathetic to his cause. Shooting in the stunning Kenyan Rift Valley, and using a real school and its pupils, gives the film an authentic sense of place and community, and the children's uninhibited, natural performances are a joy to watch. There is humour woven throughout, and a heartwarming affection and mutual respect between the dignified old man and his passionately progressive young teacher.

With Lebel's help, the twins piece together the story of the woman who brought them into the world, discovering a tragic fate forever marked by war and hatred as well as the courage of an exceptional woman.
Man of Aran
12
[U]
Friday 29 July / 5pm & 8pm Director Robert J Flaherty Cast Colman ‘Tiger’ King, Maggie Dirrane UK 1934 / B&W / 1hr 16m Man of Aran screens as a tribute to Ricky Leacock, the pioneer filmmaker who was educated at Dartington alongside the daughters of Robert Flaherty, the father of documentary film. Leacock would go on to work with Flaherty on the Oscar-winning Louisianna Story but this is a chance to see the newly digitised version of Man of Aran. Three years in the making, Flaherty’s film elevates the harsh and rugged life of the fisherman to an almost mythical, elegaic battle against the sea.
The Tree of Life
[15]
Friday 5 August / 8pm Saturday 6 August / 5pm Sunday 7 - Thursday 11 August / 8pm Director Terrence Malick Cast Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain USA 2011 / Colour / 2hr 18m Winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life is the film event of the summer, perhaps of the year. It is unashamedly visionary cinema that tells the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950s and follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. We see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life. “Malick makes an awful lot of other film-makers look timid and negligible by comparison” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian “The Tree of Life is a film of vast ambition and deep humility, attempting no less than to encompass all of existence and view it through the prism of a few infinitesimal lives. The only other film I've seen with this boldness of vision is Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it lacked Malick’s fierce evocation of human feeling. There were once several directors who yearned to make no less than a masterpiece, but now there are only a few.” Roger Ebert 13
The Conspirator
[12A]
Friday 5 & Sunday 7 August / 5pm Saturday 6 August / 8.15pm Monday 8 & Tuesday 9 August / 5pm Director Robert Redford Cast Robin Wright, James McAvoy USA 2011 / Colour / 2hr 2m In the wake of Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Mary Surratt, who owns a boarding house where John Wilkes Booth and others met and planned the attacks, is arrested and charged with conspiracy. Lawyer Frederick Aiken, a 28-yearold Union war-hero, reluctantly agrees to defend Surratt but comes to realise his client is actually being used as bait and hostage in order to capture the only conspirator to have escaped a massive manhunt, her own son, John.
A Separation
[PG]
Wednesday 10 & Thursday 11 August / 5pm Director Asghar Farhadi Cast Peyman Moaadi, Leila Hatami, Sareh Bayat Iran 2011 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 3m Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, this is further evidence of the growing strength of Iranian film-making. Simin prefers to live abroad to provide better opportunities for their only daughter, Termeh but her husband, Nader, refuses to go because he thinks he must stay in Iran and take care of his father, who suffers from Alzheimers. However, Simin is determined to get a divorce and leave the country with her daughter. 14
Gilda
[PG]
Friday 12 August / 8pm Saturday 13 August / 5pm Sunday 14 August / 8pm Director Charles Vidor Cast Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford, George Macready USA 1946 / B&W / 1hr 50m “There never was a woman like Gilda” reads the tag on the poster and in truth this ultimate femme fatale role was to haunt Rita Hayworth’s tumultuos personal life, placing an expectation upon the most intoxicating of stars that even she could not live up to. Hayworth, who was married and divorced five times, including to both Orson Welles and Prince Aly Khan, later stated that “every man I knew... went to bed with Gilda and woke up with me”. Set in Argentina, this noir tale of an American gambler and a dangerous casino owner who vye for the affection of the eponymous Gilda can still be counted as one of the most darkly erotic tales to come out of Hollywood. If Casablanca can be pared down to love and war then Gilda is simply sex and money - except there’s nothing simple about sex or money.

Oliver meets the unpredictable Anna only months after his father Hal has passed away. This new love floods him with memories of his father who - following 44 years of marriage - came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energised, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humour and hope that his father taught him in those final few years.
Last Year in Marienbad

Monday 15 August / 5pm Tuesday 16 August / 8pm Director Alain Resnais Cast Delphine Seyrig, Giorgio Albertazzi France 1961 / B&W / Subtitles / 1hr 34m Resnais’ seminal movie should be revisited for its groundbreaking narrative structure as well as the beauty and elegance of its visual palette. In a huge, old-fashioned luxury hotel a stranger tries to persuade a married woman to run away with him, but it seems she hardly remembers the affair they may have had (or not?) last year at Marienbad. 18

Wednesday 17 August / 5pm & 8pm Thursday 18 August / 5pm & 8pm Director Jean-Luc Godard Cast Catherine Tanvier, Christian Sinniger France 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 41m Constructed as a symphony the film falls loosely into three sections. In the first, ferry passengers discuss history, politics and globalisation. The second segment is an abstract play set in an Italian petrol station, whilst the third is a rapidfire collage of archive footage. Godard claims this is his last film. If so, it’s a fitting exit for European cinema’s genius grouch: angry, politicised, inquiring, brimming with ideas... and impossible to categorise. Time Out

Adapted by Christopher Landon from his own classic novel and based on his own experiences serving in North Africa, an assorted bunch of army personnel make an epic journey across the unforgiving desert in a battered old ambulance - all the while sustained by the promise of the tall, frothy, ice-cold glasses of beer that await them upon their arrival in Alexandria.
The Cruel Sea
[PG]
Sunday 21 July / 8pm Directors Charles Frend Cast Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, Stanley Baker UK 1953 / B&W / 2hr 6m A runaway success, the novel The Cruel Sea had already sold over four million copies in just two years when Ealing decided to make the film version. Shot aboard an actual Royal Navy corvette, the BAFTA nominated story of the sailors aboard the HMS Compass Rose is a gripping insight into the lives of unsung heroes at sea during the war, and the agonizing decisions and incredible peril they faced on a daily basis. 20
Bobby Fischer Against the World
[no cert]
Monday 22 August / 5pm Tuesday 23 August / 8pm Director Liz Garbus Documentary USA 2011 / Colour / 1hr 30m Bobby Fischer Against the World uses the narrative tension of the 1972 match between Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer to explore the nature of genius, madness and the game of chess itself. The film exposes the disturbingly high price Fischer paid to achieve his legendary success and the resulting toll it took on his psyche, which would never fully recover.
The Light Thief
[tbc]
Wednesday 24 August / 8pm Thursday 25 August / 8pm Director Aktan Abdykalykov Cast Aktan Abdykalykov, Taalaikan Abazova Fr/Kyr/Ger/Ne 2011 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 20m In a remote region in the south of the Kyrgyz Republic, a popular, open-hearted electrician known as Mister Light is kind to the old folks, rescues young boys from trees and tampers with meters so that the impoverished rural community who can't afford electricity have access to it. This sort of activity does not make him popular with the authorities however. A visually ravishing political allegory that manages to be warm, witty and utterly charming. 21
