Barn Cinema Film Guide March-April 2010

Under normal circumstances during award season we would be celebrating the wonderful diversity of cinema and the finest storytelling, acting and directing. Instead the film world seems obsessed by technology and 3D. That the big awards are going to be fought over by two war films of spectacularly differing styles and budgets must say something. For me, if a film is good enough you don’t need it poking you in the eye to make sure it has your attention, but that won’t stop me trying out Avatar in 2D Digital to see if it is really a film or a rollercoaster ride. Let me know what you think too. Finally a word for our season of films celebrating older age (p.6), all of which we hope will provoke debate and questions to feed our evening discussion on 16 March following the screening of Mid-August Lunch. Oscar Contenders Avatar

[12A]

Friday 5 March / 5pm & 8.30pm Saturday 6 March / 8pm Sunday 7 March / 3pm Monday 8 March / 6.30pm Tuesday 9 & Thursday 11 March / 8pm Wednesday 10 March / 5pm Director James Cameron Cast Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi, Wes Studi USA 2009 / Colour / 2hr 40m Now officially the biggest box office hit of all time - in terms of money taken - Avatar may also sweep the boards at this year’s Oscars, where it has received nine nominations. I’m sure most of you are eager to see just what all the fuss is about and whether it’s just an old fashioned tale with extra special effects. Now is your chance to find out if it’s more than just a rollercoaster ride. Showing in 2D digital.

The Hurt Locker

[15]

Saturday 6 March / 5pm Sunday 7 March / 8pm Director Kathryn Bigelow Cast Jeremy Renner, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes USA 2009 / Colour / 2hr 11m Then only real contender up against Avatar in the main Oscars, Kathryn Bigelow’s stunning take on modern warfare is an intense portrayal of elite soldiers disarming bombs in the heat of combat. Having already sneaked up the outside to take most of the major critics’ awards, can Bigelow really out do ex-husband Cameron in the more populist Oscar race and be the first ever woman to win the best director award from the Academy? The only thing we can guarantee is that if you missed this the first time around then you’d be foolish to miss it again. 04

Precious

[15]

Tuesday 9 March/ 5pm Wednesday 10 March / 8.30pm Director Lee Daniels Cast Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’nique, Mariah Carey USA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 49m Nominated for six Oscars and four Baftas Precious is one of the most distinctive films of the year, and one of the most affecting. Clareece 'Precious' Jones is an obese and impoverished teenager, systematically abused emotionally and physically by her mother and by her mother's boyfriend. Recommended to attend 'Each One Teach One', an alternative education centre, she meets an inspiring teacher who prods her into seeing that there could be hope for a better life.

A Serious Man

[15]

Thursday 11 March / 5pm Director Joel & Ethan Coen Cast Michael Stuhlberg, Sari Wagner Lennick, Richard Kind USA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 45m Due to the bad weather in January I know many of you didn't get the chance to see what proved to be the most satisfyingly Coenesque work since Fargo. Surely a shoo-in for the best original screenplay Oscar, this is no less than a minor masterpiece whose wit and wisdom come from detailed observation and loving understanding of a very particular community. Classic Coens. 05

Older Age Season Ageing today presents many new opportunities, alongside some additional challenges. We are living longer and retaining greater independence but rely increasingly on unpaid carers and support at a time when families are more dispersed than ever. The depiction of Tolstoy’s final years in The Last Station (p.8) sets the stage for a week of films that show the huge variety and opportunity of older age. Celia Atherton, Director of Social Justice at Dartington, will host a panel discussion after Mid-August Lunch that will explore attitudes to and knowledge about ageing. Our panel will also include Rt Hon Clare Short MP and Bill Jordan from the Senior Council for Devon, so please come along to see the films and to join the discussion. Monday 15 March / 5pm

Tuesday 16 March / 8.15pm

Director Bent Hamer Cast Baard Owe, Espen Skjønberg, Ghita Nørby Norway 2007 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 36m

Director Gianni di Gregorio Cast Valeria De Francis, Marina Cacciotti Italy 2008 / Colour / Subtitles / 1 hr 15m

One of the most charming tales about retirement and the sense of both fear and challenge that it can inspire. Focused on one life-changing evening in 67-year-old train engineer Odd Horten's existence, O’Horten is a unique blend of absurdist humour and aching melancholy .

This perfectly formed gem details the relationships built up over a holiday weekend in Rome when a middle-aged man living with his mother finds his small world - and flat - overrun when he is left to care for a group of strongly opinionated women left with him by their own offspring. Followed by discussion led by Celia Atherton OBE.

Thursday 18 March / 5pm

Director Yasujiro Ozu Cast Chishu Ryu, Chieko Higashiyama, Setsuko Hara Japan 1953 / B&W / Subtitles / 2hr 15m

Director Pete Docter & Bob Petersen Voice Cast Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer USA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 42m

An elderly couple leave their rural home to visit their married children in Tokyo but their son and daughter are too preoccupied to have much time for them. Ozu explores the spaces between what’s said and what cannot be said, finessing a keen sense of the fractures riven in modern families.

The most affecting and powerful portrayal of life, love, loss and regret in any film this past year, Up is a stunning movie that touches on more issues than it has a right to and covers them all with humour and compassion. This is very much a film about and for an older audience.

The Last Station [15]

Friday 12 & Saturday 13 March / 5pm & 8pm Sunday 14 March / 3pm & 8pm Monday 15 March / 7.30pm Tuesday 16 March / 5pm Wednesday 17 March / 8pm Thursday 18 March / 2pm & 8pm Director Michael Hoffman Cast Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, James McAvoy, Paul Giamatti, Anne-Marie Duff Ger/Russia/UK 2009 / Colour / 1hr 53m

After almost fifty years of marriage the Countess Sofya, devoted wife, passionate lover, muse and secretary of Leo Tolstoy, suddenly finds her entire world turned upside down. In the name of his newly created religion, the great Russian novelist has renounced his noble title, his property and even his family in favour of poverty, vegetarianism and celibacy. When Sofya then discovers that Tolstoy’s trusted disciple, Chertkov - whom she despises may have secretly convinced her husband to sign a new will, leaving the rights to his iconic novels to the Russian people rather than his own family, she is consumed by righteous outrage. Using her cunning and every trick of seduction in her considerable arsenal, she fights fiercely for what she believes is rightfully hers. The Last Station’s greatest strength is the mesmerising back and forth between Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren: two Oscar nominated performances from these acting powerhouses who prove that vintage wins out over youth every time. see p.28 for more info

A Single Man [15]

Friday 19 March / 8pm Saturday 20 March / 5pm Sunday 21 March / 8pm Monday 22 March / 7.30pm Tuesday 23 March / 8pm Wed 24 & Thu 25 March / 5pm Director Tom Ford Cast Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Goode USA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 39m

Oscar and Bafta nominated Colin Firth finally gets the complex role he has been waiting for all these years. Los Angeles 1962, and 52-yearold English college professor George Falconer is struggling to find meaning in his life after the death of his long time partner Jim. Through the course of one day, a series of events and encounters cause him to reflect on his past, and consider whether or not he has a future. His lovelorn best friend Charley is devoted to George but wrestling with her own dilemmas, while one of his students, Kenny, pursues him, seeing a possible kindred spirit. Based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood, A Single Man is an affecting story of love and loneliness. Making his directing debut, designer Tom Ford displays an instinctive feel for the material, which he was also involved in adapting, plus good judgement in the casting. While the film is as impeccably styled and photographed as one would expect, it also has a welcome sense of experiment in its aesthetic that serves to enhance, rather than overshadow, its emotional pull.

MICMACS is the latest dazzlingly cinematic outing from Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, AmĂŠlie), a satire on the arms trade which grounds this director's cinema of fantasy firmly in reality. Dany Boon leads a terrific cast including the matchless Yolande Moreau (Seraphine) in a thrilling comedy about one man's plan to destroy two big weapons manufacturers, with a little help from his friends. Few directors are more imaginative and inventive at creating their own distinctive on-screen worlds, and the aesthetic sensibility at play in MICMACS works in tandem with pacey, edge-of-the-seat storytelling and no end of visual gags and witty wordplay.

Destined to win Jeff Bridges the acting Oscar he has been due, Crazy Heart is the story of Bad Blake a successful 57-year-old musician whose career and personal life have been derailed by alcoholism. Playing to bowling alleys and bars across New Mexico, he's interviewed by a journalist and is surprised when a spark of attraction develops between them. His next stop is Phoenix, where he plays a gig with former band member Tommy Sweet, who's now a mega-star but hasn't forgotten the debt he owes to Bad. The question is whether Bad can get himself together long enough to make either relationship work. Channelling a bit of Waylon Jennings and a lot of Kris Kristofferson, Bridges is stunning in the way he can be both wry and sardonic in his interactions with his terrific supporting cast. The songs, by T Bone Burnett and Stephen Bruton, feel both timeless and specific to these characters, giving us insight and resonance. The Southwest settings are equally perfect, providing a superb backdrop to this simple but satisfying tale.

If ever a director and a subject were made for each other this was it. What we get, thankfully, is not a letdown but a magical and imaginative twist on two of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter with newcomer Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. Capturing the wonder of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (1865) and “Through the Looking-Glass” (1871) with stunning, avant-garde visuals (filmed at nearby National Trust property, Antony), Burton clearly relishes the original material, allowing it to speak for itself. 14

Shutter Island [15]

Friday 2 April / 8pm Saturday 3 April / 5pm Sunday 4 April / 8pm Monday 5 April / 5pm Tuesday 6 & Wednesday 7 April / 8pm Thursday 8 April / 5pm Director Martin Scorsese Cast Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer USA 2009 / Colour / 2hr 18m

The latest outing of the Scorcese / Di Caprio partnership is a classic murder mystery based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. It's 1954, and upand-coming US marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. As he attempts to put together the evidence Daniels comes to suspect a far more complex and dangerous game is afoot - one that involves the hospital staff and inmates and in which he himself is a major protagonist. When a hurricane hits the coast line of this remote and barren island the investigators find themselves stranded within the fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane. More dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion and as the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity. A great piece of genre entertainment.

Nearly forty years later a journalist, Mikael Blomqvist, is contacted by industrial leader Henrik Vanger, who wants him to write the history of the Vanger family. The family chronicle is just a cover for the real assignment: to find out about what really happened to Harriet. Mikael gets help from the young and troubled computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and together the odd couple starts to dig into the past of the Vanger family, encountering a darker and bloodier history than they ever could have imagined. see p.28 for more info

Ondine

[12A]

Friday 9 April / 5pm Saturday 10 April / 8.15pm Sunday 11 - Tuesday 13 April / 5pm Director Neil Jordan Cast Colin Farrell, Alicja Bachleda Ireland 2009 / Colour / 1hr 51m This story of an Irish fisherman who discovers a woman in his fishing net is Neil Jordan’s first wholly original script since The Crying Game and marks a return to his love of fairytales, explored first in The Company of Wolves Colin Farrell plays Syracuse, a divorced fisherman who’s stunned one day to find a beautiful young woman wrapped up in his net. Ondine has little to say regarding where she came from and Annie, Syracuse’s 10-year-old daughter, instantly concludes that she must be a selkie - a mermaid in Celtic lore. What’s important is the effect that this unusual stranger has on both father and daughter, both of whom desperately need a sense of hope in their lives. The film functions, too, as a vivid photographic love letter to the southwestern Irish coast, with its magnificent skies and tiny remote islands.

A one-time Baghdad bureau chief of the Washington Post, Chandrasekaran was present as American forces attempted to set up a provisional government in the grounds surrounding Saddam Hussein's former palace. The resulting governing body, according to critics, existed in a bubble so far removed from the grim realities of the Iraq War that it failed to properly assess the needs of the people. In this fictional thriller set during the USled occupation of Baghdad, director Greengrass and screenwriter Brian Helgeland use the novel as the foundation for the story of an officer who joins forces with a senior CIA colleague to unearth weapons of mass destruction, but soon stumbles across evidence of an elaborate cover up. As a result, the objective of their mission is inverted and Captain Miller (Matt Damon, very much in Bourne mood) realizes that operatives on both sides of the conflict are attempting to spin the story in their favour.

Capitalism: A Love Story Monday 19 April / 7.30pm Tuesday 20 April / 5pm & 8pm Wednesday 21 April / 8pm Thursday 22 April / 5pm Directors Michael Moore Documentary USA 2009/ Colour / 2hr 7m On the 20-year anniversary of his groundbreaking masterpiece Roger & Me, Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story comes home to the issue he's been examining throughout his career: the disastrous impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans (and by default, the rest of the world). With both humour and outrage, Michael Moore poses the ultimate question for the industrial world: who are we and why do we behave the way that we do?

Food,Inc.

Wednesday 21 April / 5pm Thursday 22 April / 2pm & 8pm Director Robert Kenner Documentary USA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 34m You are what you eat. It's a simple expression that bears scary implications as you watch Food, Inc. The film cogently explains how unfettered corporations exploited laws and subsidies to create shocking monopolies, and carefully dissects the cosy relationships between business and government. Along the way, we hear stories of heartbreak and outrage, but the film carefully channels these emotions towards opportunities for activism. Watching Food, Inc. gives you a strong appetite for better, more ethical food.

The Scouting Book for Boys

[12]

Friday 23 April / 5pm Saturday 24 April / 8pm Sunday 25 April / 3pm Monday 26 April / 7.30pm Tuesday 27 April / 8pm Wed 28 & Thu 29 April / 5pm Directors Tom Harper Cast Thomas Turgoose, Holly Grainger, Rafe Spall UK 2009 / Colour / 1hr 42m

Having grown up together on a caravan park on the Norfolk coast where their respective parents work, young teenagers David and Emily have become close friends, deeply reliant on each other for distractions and mischief. It's a shock to them both when it's decided that Emily is to be sent away to live with her father and there's even greater alarm throughout the park when Emily disappears. David struggles to cope as the situation grows ever more complex. The debut feature from Tom Harper, director of a number of acclaimed shorts, and written by playwright and Skins contributor Jack Thorne, The Scouting Book for Boys is an expertly constructed drama with deftly handled shifts in tone. It depicts the anxieties, awkwardness and fears of being a teenager, without denying the occasional delights of being young or the possibility of fun and adventure during a hazy British summer. Thomas Turgoose continues to build on the reputation he's gained appearing in Shane Meadows' This Is England and Somerstown, while Holly Grainger delivers an equally impressive performance as Emily.

I am Love

Io sono l'amore Friday 23 April / 8pm Saturday 24 April / 5pm Sunday 25 April/ 8pm Monday 26 & Tuesday 27 April / 5pm Wednesday 28 April / 8pm Thursday 29 April / 2pm & 8pm Director Luca Guadagnino Cast Tilda Swinton, Flavio Parenti Italy 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr

Tilda Swinton is simply stunning as Emma, the Russian emigre matriarch of a wealthy Milanese family who lives in a carefully ordered world where her duty towards husband and children dominates. But a chance encounter ignites long repressed passions and sets her on a journey of sexual awakening. From its 50sstyle opening titles, set over a snow-covered Milan, to John Adams score, I Am Love can’t help but recall the Douglas Sirk themes of an earlier film age, not to mention Visconti. We follow the Recchi family, on its great melodramatic arc that propells it to a magnificent finale of operatic proportions.
