With the might of The King’s Speech still overwhelming our box office at present, I’d like to thank you all for your patience and persistence in getting through to book your tickets. The unprecedented step we had to take to satisfy demand meant that for the first time ever we cancelled a film, Morning Glory, after we had gone to print, in order to fit in extra screenings of what has become our biggest ever film. We have now squeezed in two screenings of Morning Glory for those who had missed out in February. Normal order resumes as we catch up on those other Oscar contenders, including The Social Network, which many people missed first time around in November. As for the rest of the programme, all I can say is that we’ve packed in more films than even I thought we could possibly manage - I hope you enjoy. Colin Orr, Film Programmer

Oranges & Sunshine

[ 15]

Friday 29 & Saturday 30 April / 8pm Sunday 1 - Tuesday May / 8pm Director Jim Loach Cast Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving UK 2010 / Colour / 1hr 33m Oranges & Sunshine tells the story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham, who uncovered the organised deportation of children in care from the United Kingdom to Australia. Almost single-handedly, against overwhelming odds and with little regard for her own well-being, Margaret reunited thousands of families, brought authorities to account and worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. 22

Tagore in Film Sunday 1 - Saturday 7 May To mark the Tagore Festival and exhibition at Dartington, we will celebrate both the work and influence on film of Nobel Prize winning artist and teacher Rabindranath Tagore. “ An artform is derived from the characteristics of its constituent elements. I believe that the moving picture is yet to fulfil its promise... Every artform must strive for its own particular means of expression. The cinema to date has imitated literature, because no artist has yet freed it from this bondage. As in music, where the flow of notes in the melody can attain its own glory without the use of words, so in cinema, the flow of images should be awakened and allowed to blossom into an independent source of enjoyment.” Rabindranath Tagore, 1929 The greatest exponent and vivid interpreter of these hopes was Satyajit Ray, who studied with Tagore at Visva-Bharati. The season will include such Ray classics as Charulata (The Lonely Wife), Teen Kanya (Three Daughters) and Gharey Bairey (Home and the World), as well as Ray’s 1961 documentary on Tagore. We also hope to feature new films inspired by Tagore including Life Goes On by Sangeeta Datta. Full details of the Tagore 150 celebrations, including the film series, festival and exhibition will be available at ww.dartington.org/tagore150 and in the May Barn Cinema Guide. *If you are interested in volunteering for the Tagore Festival and Exhibition, please email sarah.lawrence@dartington.org
