After the relative simplicity of our summer programme we are sparing no complication to bring you an extraordinary range of films this autumn. From the classic repertoire comes stunning new digital prints of The Leopard, Metropolis and From Here to Eternity. We will also take time to wonder at the majesty of three great movies from Akira Kurosawa, as well as a swath of new films from the best directors in world cinema. A specific plea goes out all those in search of truly great cinema to see Mother, the only real rival to this year’s best film, A Prophet. Her twin story lines switch between the 17th century setting of the original tale and the 1950s where a little girl loves to frighten her older sister by reading the fairy tale of the ogre nobleman who puts his wives to death. Breillat stylishly touches on themes of sexual coming of age, sibling rivalry and gender conflict that would have Angela Carter cooing in anticipation.

The winning conceit of the film is to place at its centre the beautifully played love affair of Irene, female District Attorney, and Sandoval, a court criminal investigator, over 25 years. Neatly entwined around their story is Sandoval's obsession with an unresolved murder case that was subverted by state sponsored violence and corruption during the period of the military dictatorship.

Monday 6 September / 8pm Director Alberto Cavalcanti Cast Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Allan UK 1942 / B&W / 1hr 32m A jawdroppingly subversive and efficient piece of work, as former documentarian Alberto Cavalcanti establishes the ultimate bucolic English village into which he drops a platoon of German paratroops who hope to lay the groundwork for the forthcoming invasion. Cavalcanti then takes an almost sadistic delight in tearing it to bloody shreds in an orgy of shockingly blunt, matter-of-fact violence as the villagers turn on the infiltrators. Still truly unnerving, one can only imagine how terrifying it must have been for audiences facing the very real threat of Nazi enslavement. Time Out 05

Set in post-war Tokyo, the story of a cop obsessively hunting the criminal who stole his gun is rooted in Japanese notions of duty and honour, but also evokes psychological undertones of Dostoyevsky and the film noir style.

Kurosawa draws on the imagery of Noh theatre to create an extraordinary fusion of the Jacobean and the Japanese. Moody, dramatic and violent, it also contains an indelible performance from Isuzu Yamada as Lady Macbeth.

At once nail-bitingly tense and brimming with humanity, this terrific film comes fresh from sweeping the Asian Film Awards. When Kim Hye-ja’s nameless mother of the title discovers her dependent 27 year old son has been arrested for the murder of a young girl, she obsessively sets out to track down the real killer and prove her son’s innocence at all costs. This truly is a film of note from one of the world’s leading directors, who can fill a frame with as much depth as Mizoguchi and as much verve as Kurosawa while resolutely invoking the master of suspense himself. Afterwards he signs copies of his book and agrees to accompany her for a drive that afternoon. In a café they are mistaken for a married couple, an assumption she does not contradict. In a small town that often hosts weddings, they watch radiant brides and grooms and discuss art, love and life. Are they play-acting, or are they really an estranged husband and wife? Gradually all the film’s early scenes take on dual meanings in retrospect.

Set in 1860-62, during the turbulent period of Italian unification, it tells the story of an aristocratic Sicilian family threatened by political upheaval. This is the setting for Fritz Lang's Metropolis, rightly regarded as one of the most influential films of all time. In terms of sheer scale and creative ambition it still rivals anything coming out of Hollywood. In 2008 several dusty reels of footage, presumed lost, were uncovered in a small museum in Buenos Aires. From that discovery comes the most authentic reconstruction of Lang’s masterpiece seen in 80 years. 14

Altered States - Mental Health Season The Arts and Social Justice Departments at Dartington, alongside Soundart Radio, present a season of work based around perceptions and depictions of mental health Talks and events will take place over the week, including an overarching panel discussion following our screening of Radio La Colifata on Thursday 14 with Director of Social Justice at Dartington, Celia Atherton, and Tim Yealland from English Touring Opera, who will talk about their work with the socially excluded and incarcerated. More information on the season will be available on our website from mid-September.
World Mental Health Day 10/10/10 Unsane Rhapsody Soundart Radio 102.5fm, in collaboration with The Arts at Dartington, are broadcasting a 24 hour radio festival that will include an enthusiastic vocal and instrumental composition of indefinite form - an unsane rhapsody - a stream of consciousness, sounds of changing mood, colour, and tonality, compiled from local workshop participants and led by artist Magda Crace.
