Bluebeard

[PG]

Wednesday 1 & Thursday 2 September / 8pm Director Catherine Breillat Cast Dominique Thomas, Lol Creton France 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 20m Catherine Breillat’s exploration of feminine tales continues with this subversive take on the story of Bluebeard. Her twin story lines switch between the 17th century setting of the original tale and the 1950s where a little girl loves to frighten her older sister by reading the fairy tale of the ogre nobleman who puts his wives to death. Breillat stylishly touches on themes of sexual coming of age, sibling rivalry and gender conflict that would have Angela Carter cooing in anticipation.

White Material

[15]

Friday 3 September / 5pm Saturday 4 September / 8pm Director Claire Denis Cast Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Lambert France 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 45m Claire Denis revisits Africa, the setting for her celebrated first feature Chocolat, in this starkly haunting film that explores post-colonial Africa. Isabelle Huppert is Maria, wife and mother, who owns a coffee plantation and is fighting to keep her family and her business together against the chaotic backdrop of a civil war where armed child soldiers flock the local streets. ‘There is no better film-maker working in the world right now’ Sight & Sound 04

The Secret in Their Eyes

[18]

Fri 3, Sun 5 & Wed 8 & Thu 9 September / 8pm Sat 4, Mon 6 & Tue 7 September / 5pm Director Juan Jose Campanella Cast Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil, Pablo Rago Argentina 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 10m This year's Best Foreign Film Oscar winner is a skillful blend of love story, police procedural crime thriller and legal drama. The winning conceit of the film is to place at its centre the beautifully played love affair of Irene, female District Attorney, and Sandoval, a court criminal investigator, over 25 years. Neatly entwined around their story is Sandoval's obsession with an unresolved murder case that was subverted by state sponsored violence and corruption during the period of the military dictatorship.

[PG]

Monday 6 September / 8pm Director Alberto Cavalcanti Cast Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Allan UK 1942 / B&W / 1hr 32m A jawdroppingly subversive and efficient piece of work, as former documentarian Alberto Cavalcanti establishes the ultimate bucolic English village into which he drops a platoon of German paratroops who hope to lay the groundwork for the forthcoming invasion. Cavalcanti then takes an almost sadistic delight in tearing it to bloody shreds in an orgy of shockingly blunt, matter-of-fact violence as the villagers turn on the infiltrators. Still truly unnerving, one can only imagine how terrifying it must have been for audiences facing the very real threat of Nazi enslavement. Time Out 05

“[The] pictorial Shakespeare of our time” Steven Spielberg

Hidden Fortress [

PG]

Thursday 9 September / 2pm Director Akira Kurosawa Cast Toshiro Mifune, Minoru Chiaki Japan 1958 / B&W / 2hr 18m Kurosawa’s thoroughly entertaining action romp follows the adventures of a princess, her retainer and two arguing servants transporting clan treasures through enemy territory. Stunning for its widescreen cinematography and notable as a key inspiration for a young George Lucas to come up with something called Star Wars.

Stray Dog [

PG]

Thursday 16 September / 5pm Director Akira Kurosawa Cast Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura Japan 1949 / B&W / 1hr 42m Stray Dog is arguably Kurosawa’s best 1940s film. Set in post-war Tokyo, the story of a cop obsessively hunting the criminal who stole his gun is rooted in Japanese notions of duty and honour, but also evokes psychological undertones of Dostoyevsky and the film noir style.

+ Panel discussion

Throne of Blood [

Thursday 9 September / 5pm Director Maren Freeland Documentary UK 2010 / Colour / 1hr 5m This documentary follows the setting up of the Landmatters Co-operative and their ongoing fight to gain the right to create a new living Permaculture project. Thursday 23 September / 2pm Director Akira Kurosawa Cast Toshiro Mifune, Minoru Chiaki Japan 1957 / B&W / 1hr 49m This samurai Macbeth relocates the Scottish play to the civil wars of the 16th century Age of Warring States. Kurosawa draws on the imagery of Noh theatre to create an extraordinary fusion of the Jacobean and the Japanese. Moody, dramatic and violent, it also contains an indelible performance from Isuzu Yamada as Lady Macbeth.

Baarìa

Mother [15]

Baarìa is a lush romantic tapestry of 20th century Italian life as seen through the eyes of a single individual as he grows up, matures, marries and revisits a collection of sentimental memories. Beautifully photographed and set to a memorable Ennio Morricone score, Baarìa has been hailed as Tornatore's Amarcord, and was a Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. 08

[15]

Friday 10 September / 8.15pm Saturday 11 September / 8.15pm Director Rachel Ward Cast Bryan Brown, Ben Mendelsohn. Rachel Griffiths, Sophie Lowe Australia 2010 / Colour / 1hr 41m For her feature film debut as writer/director, actor Rachel Ward has created a dark, gothic drama about family conflict and taboo relationships. As Ned returns home to see his dying father we are drawn into a prodigal son narrative, made murkier once we learn about the early death of his twin sister Kate. This is an atmospheric and moving piece of cinema.

Monday 13 & Wednesday 15 September / 5pm Tuesday 14 & Thursday 16 September / 8pm Director Joon-Ho Bong Cast Kim Hye-ja, Bin Won, Ku Jin South Korea 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 11m Mother is the wholly refreshing corrective to the much abused film term - Hitchcockian. At once nail-bitingly tense and brimming with humanity, this terrific film comes fresh from sweeping the Asian Film Awards. When Kim Hye-ja’s nameless mother of the title discovers her dependent 27 year old son has been arrested for the murder of a young girl, she obsessively sets out to track down the real killer and prove her son’s innocence at all costs. This truly is a film of note from one of the world’s leading directors, who can fill a frame with as much depth as Mizoguchi and as much verve as Kurosawa while resolutely invoking the master of suspense himself. Magnificent. 09

Our weary hero is an over-the-hill magician, complete with less-than-friendly white rabbit; their adventures based upon an unrealised script by Jacques Tati. Always in search of a paying gig, the illusionist treks from Paris to the Western Isles to Edinburgh – acquiring, along the way, a young travelling companion who sincerely believes in his magical abilities. Rich with visual jokes, seductive 1950s period detail and breathtaking views of city and wilderness alike.

The Leopard

[12A]

Fri 24, Sat 25, Mon 27 & Tue 28 September / 5pm Sunday 26 & Wednesday 29 September / 8pm Thursday 30 September / 2pm & 5pm Director Abbas Kiarostami Cast Juliette Binoche, William Shimell France/Italy 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 48m Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami’s film is a startlingly enigmatic work that begins with Juliette Binoche’s gallery owner in Tuscany attending a talk given by an English author - played by opera singer William Shimell - about authenticity, fakes and copies in art. Afterwards he signs copies of his book and agrees to accompany her for a drive that afternoon. In a café they are mistaken for a married couple, an assumption she does not contradict. In a small town that often hosts weddings, they watch radiant brides and grooms and discuss art, love and life. Are they play-acting, or are they really an estranged husband and wife? Gradually all the film’s early scenes take on dual meanings in retrospect.

My Night with Maud

[PG]

Friday 24 & Saturday 25 September / 8pm Sunday 26 September / 3pm Director Luchino Visconti Cast Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale Italy 1963 / Colour / Subtitles / 3hr 5m Visconti’s masterpiece The Leopard gets a breathtaking new digital restoration courtesy of Martin Scorcese and the Gucci foundation. Winner of the Palme D’Or in 1963, The Leopard must surely rate as one of the most sumptuously beautiful epics ever made. Set in 1860-62, during the turbulent period of Italian unification, it tells the story of an aristocratic Sicilian family threatened by political upheaval. Adapted from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s only novel Il Gattopardo, it is, as Philip French says, “that rare thing – a great film based on a great book.” see p.26 for more info

Il Divo

[15]

Monday 27 September / 8pm Director Paolo Sorrentino Cast Toni Servillo. Anna Bonaiuto Italy 2008 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 57m Sorrentino’s life of notorious Italian PM Guido Andreotti is just as telling a picture of the modern state of Italy as The Leopard’s depiction of the lost world from which it emerged.

I am Love

[15]

Tuesday 28 September / 8pm Director Luca Guadagnino Cast Tilda Swinton, Flavio Parenti, Italy 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr The Leopard’s Prince of Salina is the ultimate exponent of familial duty. In the extraordinary I am Love, Emma, the matriarch of a wealthy Milanese family challenges that notion as she struggles free from a repressive world, where duty dominates, stirred by an all consuming passion.

Metropolis

[PG]

Friday 1 October / 8pm Saturday 2 October / 5pm Sunday 3 October / 3pm Director Fritz Lang Cast Alfred Abel, Gustav Fröhlich Germany 1927 / B&W / Silent / 2hr 25m 2026 and the city of the future, where the rich enjoy a metropolitan life of luxury in contrast to the poor who work in hard labour beneath ground to keep the city moving. This is the setting for Fritz Lang's Metropolis, rightly regarded as one of the most influential films of all time. In terms of sheer scale and creative ambition it still rivals anything coming out of Hollywood. In 2008 several dusty reels of footage, presumed lost, were uncovered in a small museum in Buenos Aires. From that discovery comes the most authentic reconstruction of Lang’s masterpiece seen in 80 years. 14

Capturing the hidden beauty of the sweeping Peruvian coastline with stunning photography, this haunting, bittersweet tale of a unique love-triangle set within a small fishing village, examines the quest to define contemporary sexual identity, confronted by dogma and tradition and the forces of courage, honour and truth that compel us to challenge them.

Cheesed off with toiling just as hard as their male counterparts for less pay, the camel’s back finally breaks when the women are reclassified as “unskilled”. Rita O’Grady decides the time has come to act, inspiring her fellow workers to lay down their tools and strike for equal pay.

Friday 29 October / 5pm Saturday 30 October / 8pm Director Werner Herzog Cast Willem Dafoe, Michael Shannon USA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 33m Produced by David Lynch, this could be seen to be a corrective to all those who thought mistakenly that Herzog had gone mainstream with Bad Lieutenant. Police, Adjective

[tbc]

Friday 29 October / 8pm Saturday 30 October / 5pm Director Corneliu Porumboiu Cast Dragos Bucur, Vlad Ivanov, Irina Saulescu Romania 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 55m Tasked with pursuing a schoolboy suspected of supplying marijuana, a young policeman becomes troubled by the clash between duty and instinct. The struggle he undertakes with his conscience and his superiors provides an intriguing, philosophical allegory; but most delightfully, it’s played with warmth and humour, and an extraordinary investment in the detail of its characters’ lives.
