A very busy October with packed out houses for Jane Eyre and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy leads us very nicely into the final programme of the year - which includes a couple of extra screenings for those two sold out runs. Also a fitting follow up for Brontë fans comes right on the heels of Jane Eyre with a very different take on Wuthering Heights. Other fantastic new titles abound but the film event of the year for me will undoubtedly be the stunning restoration of the greatest of all French films Les Enfants du Paradis. Hugely accessible, fantastically moving it was also a magnificently subversive work of resistance made under the watching eyes of the Nazi occupiers in wartime Paris. Thank you for your support in 2011 and see you in 2012. Colin Orr, Film Programmer

Drive

[18]

Wednesday 2 & Friday 4 November / 8pm Thursday 3 & Saturday 5 November / 5pm Director Nicolas Winding Refn Cast Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks USA 2011 / Colour / 1hr 40m Driver is a Hollywood stunt driver but as he likes to say, “It's only part time.” By night he's the best getaway driver in town. Into his carefully controlled world comes single mother, Carey Mulligan... and a whole heap of trouble. It’s been noted before that the irony of film noir was that it came from one of the sunniest places on earth – California. From the late ’60s another set of filmmakers took the staple elements of the genre – brooding heroes, guncrazy villains, desperate dames – and brought them out into the light... This then is a film built on familiarity, in terms of narrative and style but it’s an entirely welcome riff on old material, a pulse-pounding, electronically enhanced cover version of a beloved standard. Sure, it’s shallow, but it’s also slickly compelling, beautifully crafted and so damn shiny. Time Out “The most stylish film in years” The Independent

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

We Need To Talk About Kevin [15]

Sunday 13 November / 2pm Mon 14 & Tue 15 November / 8pm Wednesday 16 November / 5pm Thursday 17 November / 2pm Director Lynne Ramsey Cast Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller UK/USA 2011 / Colour / 1hr 52m For her third feature after Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar , British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay has adapted Lionel Shriver's popular 2003 novel about an American woman, Eva, suffering from the fallout of a terrible crime committed by her teenage son, Kevin. Ramsay's bold and intensely visual adaptation is a fractured, mysterious story that swings between periods and moods and is both haunting and provocative. One minute, we witness the trappings of the suburban dream as Eva and her husband, Franklin, are bringing up two children in comfort and wealth, despite the rumblings of a familial civil war. The next, we observe the situation of an outcast as Eva is attempting to rebuild her shattered life. Most impressively, Ramsay has converted the defining structure of Shriver's book - a series of letters from Eva to Franklin - into a radical, lyrical form of first-person cinema. The result is partly a domestic tragedy, partly a horror story and partly a deeply claustrophobic and troubling portrait of a woman in crisis. London Film Festival

Perfect Sense

[15]

Sunday 13 November / 5pm Mon 14 & Tue 15 November / 5pm Director David Mackenzie Cast Ewan McGregor, Eva Green UK 2011 / Colour / 1hr 32m On one side of a courtyard, there’s the staff entrance of chef Ewan McGregor’s restaurant, on the other the flat belonging to epidemiologist Eva Green. They find each other just as the world is surrendering to a mystery virus progressively depriving us of our sensory perceptions. “A playful, even poetic riposte to familiar celluloid intimations of mortality...Thrillingly ambitious, ecstatically romantic, utterly unexpected.” Time Out

Tyrannosaur

[18]

Wednesday 16 November / 8pm Thursday 17 November / 5pm Director Paddy Considine Cast Peter Mullan, Olivia Colman, Eddie Marsan UK 2011 / Colour / 1hr 32m Winner of three awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival Tyrannosaur is the story of Joseph, a man plagued by violence and a rage that is driving him to self-destruction. As his life spirals into turmoil a chance of redemption appears in the form of Hannah, a Christian charity shop worker. Their relationship develops to reveal that Hannah is hiding a secret of her own. This uncompromising film shows that love is still to be found in the darkest of places. 07

The Green Wave

[12A]

Thursday 17 November / 8pm Director Ali Samadi Ahadi Documentary Iran/Germany 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 20m Green is the colour of hope. Green is the colour of Islam. And green was the symbol of recognition among the supporters of presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who became the symbolic figure of the Green Revolution. This sober yet enraging documentary mixes animation, amateur footage, interviews and even reconstructions of Twitter feeds to recall the false hope of Iran’s June 2009 election. Most powerful are the readings from blogs written during that month, and it’s these sections that are animated in a style that recalls the Israeli film Waltz with Bashir.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of The Unicorn [PG]

Friday 18 November / 8pm Sunday 20 November / 2pm Monday 21 - Thursday 24 November / 5pm Director Steven Spielberg Voice Cast Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig USA /NZ 2011 / Colour / 1hr 46m Two of the world’s great filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson combine their love for Hergé’s hero in this stunning adventure which sees Tintin, Snowy, Capt. Haddock and the Thompson Twins go off on the hunt for a legendary treasure. 08

Anonymous

[12A]

Friday 18 & Saturday 19 November / 5pm Sunday 20 - Wednesday 23 November / 8pm Thursday 24 November / 2pm Director Roland Emmerich Cast Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis UK/Germany 2011 / Colour / 2hr 10m Roland Emmerich immerses himself in Elizabethan England to tackle a creative controversy that has intrigued thinkers as varied as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and Sigmund Freud, namely: who actually wrote the body of work credited to William Shakespeare? Anonymous takes as a given that Shakespeare was not their author, and spins a compelling yarn out of the theory that the true writer was Edward de Vere, the Earl of Oxford. The story is a cinematic gift, replete with suspicion, snobbery, duplicity and self-advancement, and Emmerich tackles it with gusto. London is recreated as a city of extremes, from vermin-infested backstreets and dubious taverns to the splendour of the royal court, where back-stabbing, vanity and corruption span the class divide. Involved in the intrigue is an epic cast of characters, including Ben Jonson and other notable theatre figures of the period, as well as the Queen of England, her ambitious advisers and the Earl himself. Whether you fall into the Oxfordian camp or don't much care, the whole is rollicking good fun, and the recreated performances at the Rose Theatre are a delight, reminding us that whoever they came from, Shakespeare's writings are a gift to us all.

Sleeping Beauty

[18]

Saturday 19 November / 8pm Sunday 20 November / 5pm Director Julia Leigh Cast Emily Browning, Rachael Blake Australia 2011 / Colour / 1hr 41m Death-haunted, quietly reckless, Lucy is a young university student who takes a job as a ‘Sleeping Beauty’. In the Sleeping Beauty Chamber old men seek an erotic experience that requires Lucy's absolute submission. This unsettling task starts to bleed into Lucy’s daily life and she develops an increasing need to know what happens to her when she is asleep. Presented by Jane Campion, Julia Leigh’s haunting, provocative and powerful vision is one of the most startling debut features of recent years.

The Ides of March

[15]

Friday 25 November / 5pm Saturday 26 - Monday 28 November / 8pm Tue 29 & Wed 30 November / 5pm Thursday 1 December / 8pm Director George Clooney Cast Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti USA 2011 / Colour / 1hr 40m Having taken a historical look at politics and the news media in his earlier film Good Night, and Good Luck, George Clooney comes bang up-to-date with this smart and incisive exploration of dirty politics on the campaign trail. Based on the award-winning play Farragut North, The Ides of March brings together an outstanding cast in a story of ambition, loyalty, betrayal and revenge. As the presidential primary race hots up, some are willing to do anything to beat the opposition. The cut and thrust of the machinations take on further ethical twists in this crisply written and classily delivered drama. Its quick-witted dialogue and confident direction bring to mind the socially engaged films of directors such as Lumet or Pakula, it is most definitely a film of and for our times.

The Yellow Sea

[18]

After Gu-nam is fired from his job, the local crime boss offers him a way to wipe out all of his debts.

Les Enfants du Paradis

[PG]

Friday 2 & Saturday 3 December / 8pm Sunday 4 December / 3pm Director Marcel Carné Cast Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault, Pierre Brasseur, Maria Casarès, Marcel Herrand France 1945 / B&W / Subtitles / 3hr 10m Widely regarded as the greatest French movie of all time, comparable with Lawrence of Arabia, The Leopard or Casablanca as a defining moment in the history of that country’s movie mythology. The exraordinary fact that Carné’s sublimley romantic yet subtley revolutionary portrait was made during the Nazi Occupation of Paris makes it almost miraculous. Charting the fortunes of various actors, aristocrats, aficionados and villains frequenting Paris's theatrical district in the 19th century, this rich, engrossing tale of professional and personal rivalries, intrigue and unrequited passion explores, to brilliantly witty effect, the crucial role played by different kinds of performance in all aspects of everyday life. Inspired by real events and colourful characters like the mime Baptiste Debureau, the film is not merely a masterclass in great acting but a breathtaking achievement on every front, from the superb cinematography and sets to Carné's deft elaboration of the sheer genius of Jacques Prévert's script. All are enhanced in this glittering new digital restoration.

Wuthering Heights

[15]

Friday 2 & Saturday 3 December / 5pm Sunday 4 December / 8pm Monday 5 & Tuesday 6 December / 5pm Wednesday 7 December / 8pm Thursday 8 December / 2pm Director Andrea Arnold Cast Kaya Scodelario, James Howson UK 2011 / Colour / 2hr 10m Director Andrea Arnold is one of contemporary British cinema's boldest directors, so who better to put her own distinctive stamp on this tale of obsessive love and class division. In Emily BrontĂŤ's novel, a Yorkshire farmer on a visit to Liverpool finds a homeless boy on the streets and takes him home to live as part of his family where the boy develops an all-consuming relationship with the farmer's daughter. Arnold has brought a timeless universality to the story, and has succeeded in making Heathcliff and Cathy, two of literature's best known characters, feel entirely fresh and new. While respectful of the original text, this is a decidedly radical interpretation, not least in its casting of young unknowns in the lead roles. Equally original is the film's breathtaking visual style; for while there is no shortage of filmed versions of Yorkshire's wild and windy moors, it's unlikely you will ever have seen them so bleakly and beautifully captured as here. A thrilling and wildly entertaining film, Trollhunter delivers truly fantastic images of giant trolls wreaking havoc on the countryside, with darkly funny adherence to the original Norwegian folklore.

Oslo, August 31

[15]

Tuesday 6 December / 8pm Wednesday 7 & Thursday 8 December / 5pm Director Joachim Trier Cast Anders Danielsen, Lie Hans Olav Brenner Norway 2011 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 36m Recovering drug addict Anders has almost completed his rehabilitation programme. As part of his treatment he's given a day’s leave from the countryside rehab centre to attend a job interview in his native Oslo. His journey through the sights and sounds of Oslo is imbued with a New Wave sensibility in both style and approach. 18

My Week with Marilyn

[tbc]

Fri 9 & Sat 10 December / 5pm & 8pm Sunday 11 December / 3pm & 8pm Monday 12 December / 5pm & 8pm Tue 13 & Wed 14 December / 5pm Thursday 15 December / 2pm Director Simon Curtis Cast Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson UK 2011 / Colour / 1hr 38m In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark, fresh from university and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl, the film that united Laurence Olivier with Marilyn, who was also on honeymoon at the time with her new husband, playwright Arthur Miller. Based on the one chapter that was missing when Clark published his memoirs 40 years later, My Week With Marilyn depicts the story of their brief encounter as Clark escorted Monroe, desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of working, around a different, very real England. In an Oscar-worthy performance the wonderful Michelle Williams captures not only the stars’ notorious fragility, both on-screen and off, but also her magical, unclassifiable charisma, accomplishing the near-impossible task of portraying Marilyn Monroe as an actual person, not just an easily caricatured icon.

Resistance

Resistance is set in the Welsh valleys in an alternate 1944, after the fall of Russia and the failed D-Day landings. The menfolk of the valley are disappearing one by one, their absences sudden and unexplained. As the all-female community huddles together, a group of German Wehrmacht soldiers invade the valley. A cruel winter season forces the two groups to put aside their differences and build a cautious entente cordiale, but as farmer’s wife Sarah Lewis grows closer to the patrol’s commanding officer, the spirit of the valley is threatened by the war raging beyond the mountain, and the unlikely community is faced with unimaginable devastation.

The Deep Blue Sea

[12A]

Friday 16 - Sunday 18 December / 8pm Monday 19 December / 5pm Tuesday 20 - Thursday 22 December / 8pm Director Terence Davies Cast Rachel Weisz, Tom Huddelston UK 2011 / Colour / 1hr 38m Terence Davies brings emotional sensitivity and flawless craftsmanship to his adaptation of Terence Rattigan's acclaimed play about the unreliable nature of love. This deeply-felt drama unfolds in London in the 1950s as Britain struggles through the aftermath of the Second World War. Hester Collier leads a privileged life as the beautiful wife of a High Court judge, though theirs is a companionable rather than a passionate marriage. When Hester meets a young ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page, she falls devastatingly in love with him and to the shock of those around her she leaves her marriage to live with him in shabby lodgings. But as time passes, Hester comes to realise that the dashing but damaged Freddie is unable to return her all-consuming passion, just as she is unable to return her husband's love. This heartbreaking theme of the painful inequalities of desire finds exquisite expression in Davies' screen version, informed as it is by his evident love of the classic melodramas of the 1940s and 50s that evoke the pull between emotion and repression.

Hugo

[PG]

Friday 16 - Sun 18 December / 2pm & 5pm Monday 19 December / 2pm & 8pm Tuesday 20 - Thursday 22 December / 5pm Director Martin Scorcese Cast Johnny Depp, Asa Butterfield, Jude Law, Chloe Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsly, Ray Winstone USA 2011 / Colour / 1hr 54m Set in 1930s Paris, Hugo is the story of an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station while trying to decifer a mystery involving his late father and an automaton. Based on the award winning novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, written and illustrated by Brian Selznick, the book’s primary inspiration, and the hook for Martin Scorcese to make his first family film, is

22

that it is based on the true story of turn-of-thecentury pioneer filmmaker Georges Méliès. At the end of his life Méliès, having sold or lost the right to all his films did in fact work in a toy booth in a Paris railway station and his output contained a collection of mechanical, wind-up figures called automata. Scorcese imbues the film with his own love and knowledge of the silent film era creating a world that is both authentic and magical, populated by heroes and villains both slapstick and mysterious who will appeal to audiences of all ages. Not just for children this is a perfect Christmas adventure for imaginations young and old.

Our next newsletter will be in the New Year but for those who were disappointed when Kung Fu Panda 2 didn’t turn up in September, we’ve got it back. Alongside it we have great news for all you Tintin fans. It may have taken the combined talents of the directors of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Lord of the Rings to get there but The Secret of The Unicorn is with us at last. Finally if you haven’t heard about Ghostbusters then ask your Mum and Dad to find out why seeing it in the cinema will be so exciting.
