Stay up to date with films and events...

Unbelievably summer is with us again, with an unusually high calibre of releases. French film is particularly well suited to warm summer evenings - or in fact those slightly chilly ones we usually have. A raft of dramas ranging from the slapstick romantic comedy of Heartbreaker to the cool sophistication of Gainsbourg. And starting off this invasion we have the fiftieth anniversary re-issue of the archetypal new wave film Godard’s A Bout de souffle. Elsewhere in the programme we mark the passing of the greatest of cinematographers and the master of technicolour, Jack Cardiff, with three of his most ravishing creations. Enjoy the beach, enjoy the sun but remember the coolest place this summer is down at The Barn.

Friday 25 & Sunday 27 June / 8pm Monday 28 & Tuesday 29 June / 8pm Wednesday 30 & Thursday 1 July / 5pm Director Michael Winterbottom Cast Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba UK/US 2010 / Colour / 1hr 49m Michael Winterbottom’s already notorious new thriller is based on a classic 1952 pulp novel by Jim Thompson that took the hard boiled noir world of the 40’s and mixed in the darker more contemporary depictions of psycho-sexual violence of the small town serial killer. A thoughtful and stylish addition to the genre jumping ladder that is Winterbotom’s career.

The Brothers Bloom, which sees two conmen brothers lead an eccentric millionairess on a European trek, is a similar mash-up of styles, ostensibly a slick con man movie but built as a Wes Anderson-esque screwball comedy with a soft rom-com centre. 05

The phrase "legend" is all too frequently used, yet Cardiff's story proves him truly worthy of that title. In March 2001, 54 years after winning his first Oscar for his stunning Technicolor work on Black Narcissus, Cardiff was the first cinematographer ever to receive an Honorary Oscar for:"Exceptional distinction in lifetime achievement”. Featuring interviews with the world's greatest actors, directors and technicians, Cameraman explores Jack's life and work in compelling detail, scope and intimacy.

Breathless [

Friday 16 - Monday 19 July / 8pm Director Jean-Luc Godard Cast Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg France 1959 / B&W / Subtitles / 1hr 30m This 50th anniversary re-release of Godard's first feature, adapted from an existing scenario written by François Truffaut, celebrates the film which epitomised the iconoclasm of the early Nouvelle Vague with its insolent jump cuts and knowing pastiche. The camera lavishes black-and-white love on Paris as joyrider Belmondo shoots a cop, chases friends and debts across a night-time Paris, and falls in love with a literary lady. Seberg quotes books and ideas and names while Belmondo measures his profile against Bogart's.

Tuesday 20 & Thursday 22 July / 5pm Wednesday 21 July / 8pm Director Nicole Holofcener Cast Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet USA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 30m A freewheeling female cast are all on top form in this NY set drama. Kate has a lot on her mind: There‘s the ethics problem of buying furniture on the cheap at estate sales and marking it up at her trendy Manhattan store; there‘s the materialism problem of not wanting her teenage daughter to want the expensive things that Kate wants; and there‘s the marriage problem of course. Plus Kate‘s free-floating 21st century malaise -- the problem of how to live well and be a good person when badness and poverty are always right outside the door.

Tuesday 20 & Thursday 22 July / 8pm Wednesday 21 July / 5pm Director Alain Resnais Cast André Dussollier, Sabine Azéma, France 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 44m Resnais’ 48th feature sees him in accessibly playful form as he continues to explore the male mid-life crisis to witty and revealing effect. While the basic tale of a man returning the discarded wallet of a woman and proceeding to stalk, and be stalked by her may sound contrived, Resnais is such a skillful artist that it’s almost impossible not to be sucked in. Visually sumptuous, Resnais explores the emotional twists and turns of ageing in a film part thriller and part psycho-sexual daydream. 10

Rashômon

[12A]

Friday 23 July / 8pm Saturday 24 July / 8pm Sunday 25 July / 3pm Director Akira Kurosawa Cast Toshirô Mifune, Machiko Kyô, Masayuki Mori Japan 1951 / B&W / Subtitles / 1hr 28m This new digital print is a precurser to our Kurosawa season coming in the autumn, which marks the 100th anniversay of the great man’s birth. Now looked upon as one of the director's canonical films, the title Rashômon has even entered the language of film to denote a story told through multiple perspectives the stand-out and formally bold narrative approach of Kurosawa's crime and mystery drama. Set in 12th century Kyoto, the film reveals an ambush, rape and murder in four contradictory accounts, each through the eyes of a different protagonist. The subtle shifts in point of view, the striking cinematography and powerful performances by Toshiro Mifune and Masayuki Mori make this that all too rare thing - a film that simply demands repeated viewing.

Whatever Works Friday 30 July / 5pm & 8pm Saturday 30 July / 5pm & 8pm Sunday 1 & Monday 2 August / 8pm Director Woody Allen Cast Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood USA/France 2009 / Colour / 1hr 32m

[12A]

OK so it’s not the most original or subtle work of Allen's career but it is his first movie in five years set in New York City and is also among his most upbeat and hopeful – despite centring on a protagonist who addresses the audience early on to say "Let me tell you right now: I'm not a likeable guy." His name is Boris Yelnikoff. He's a retired genius physicist who was ‘almost’ nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. In a role originally written for Zero Mostel 30 years ago, Allen has wisely cast Larry David, who essentially turns Boris into a meaner, more contemptuous version of his Curb Your Enthusiasm persona. Boris makes a living teaching kids how to play chess and spends most of his time hanging out at a coffee shop with old pals. But when he reluctantly takes in Melody, a naïve teenage runaway from Mississippi, he sets in motion a chain of events where the only rule is Whatever Works...

Dartington International Summer School To complement the performance of Benjamin Britten’s operatic version of The Turn of the Screw in the Graveyard at Dartington this week, we screen the 1961 version of the chilling ghost story.

The Innocents

www.dartington.org/summer-school [12]

Tuesday 3 August / 8pm Director Jack Clayton Cast Deborah Kerr, Michael Redgrave UK 1961 / B&W / 1hr 40m “The best ghost movie I’ve ever seen” Pauline Kael Jack Clayton’s celebrated adaptation of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, scripted by William Archibald and Truman Capote, with additional scenes by John Mortimer. A brilliant exercise in psychological horror, The Innocents tells of an impressionable and repressed governess, Miss Giddens, who agrees to tutor two orphaned children. On arrival at Bly House, she becomes convinced the children are possessed by the spirits of former governess Miss Jessel and her lover Quint, who both met with mysterious deaths. The sinister atmosphere of The Innocents is carefully created – not through shock tactics – but through its cinematography, soundtrack and decor. It is Deborah Kerr’s career best performance however – struggling to veil her mounting hysteria under a civilised façade – that makes The Innocents such an intensely unsettling experience, creating one of the greatest of all cinematic terror tales.

Other musical highlights include Elysian’s live soundtrack to silent classic My Best Girl; The Concert, featuring Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra; and the stirring drama Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.

My Best Girl

[U]

With live soundtrack by the Elysian Quartet Tuesday 17 August / 8pm Director Sam Taylor Cast Mary Pickford, Charles ‘Buddy’ Rogers USA 1927 / B&W / Silent / 1hr 20m This classic silent romantic comedy was produced by and stars Mary Pickford, the greatest female star of the silent era. Alongside her equally glamorous husband Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and D W Griffiths, Pickford founded one of Hollywood’s great film companies, United Artists. In My Best Girl she stars as Maggie, the stock room girl who falls in love with her co-worker Joe, unaware that he is the store owner’s son working undercover to learn the ropes. This collaboration was first performed at Dartington in November 2009 to well deserved rapturous applause. Don’t miss this second opportunity to enjoy this fantastic comedy with a stunning improvised live soundtrack performed by the Elysian Quartet.

The Elysian Quartet The Elysian Quartet will also be playing a twenty minute improvisation to Dartington Archive footage as part of their Sunday evening performance in the Great Hall. (See p37 of the Summer School concert brochure for more details).

Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible: inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. Up and coming young French/Romanian director Radu Mihaileanu mixes classical music and comedy to hugely entertaining effect in this film, partly based on a true story of a former worldfamous conductor of the Bolshoi Orchestra who was demoted to the role of janitor during the communist era for refusing to fire his Jewish musicians. Twenty-five years later when a fax comes through one night from the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, begging the Bolshoi to step in when another orchestra cancels, Andrei seizes the opportunity to conduct again. With the help of best friend Sacha he gathers together his former musicians to perform in the place of the current orchestra. Throw in some forged visas, an unlikely alliance and more than a few mistranslations and the stage is set for a a dramatic finale where Andrei insists that the only work he will conduct is Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto - the piece that led to his downfall - and the only soloist he'll accept is young virtuoso French violinist Anne-Marie Jacquet.

Page 22

At the Theatre Des Champs-Elysées, Igor Stravinsky premieres his The Rite Of Spring. Coco Chanel attends the premiere and is mesmerized. But the revolutionary work is too modern, too radical: the enraged audience boos and jeers. A near riot ensues. Stravinsky is inconsolable. Seven years later, now rich, respected and successful, Coco Chanel meets Stravinsky again - a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris after the Russian Revolution. The attraction between them is immediate and electric. Coco offers Stravinsky the use of her villa in Garches so that he will be able to work and he moves in straight away, with his children and consumptive wife. And so a passionate, intense love affair between two creative giants begins.

Gainsbourg (Vie Héroïque) [15]

Friday 20 & Saturday 21 August / 8pm Sunday 22 August / 3pm Monday 23 & Tuesday 24 August / 5pm Wednesday 25 August / 8pm Thursday 26 August / 5pm Director Joann Sfar Cast Eric Elmosnino, Lucy Gordon France 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 10m Joann Sfar writes and directs a unique film of the life of one of France’s most important artists. Growing up in wartime Paris the young Lucien Ginsburg escapes from both Nazi and selfpersecution by embarking on a fantastical career in the arts, resulting in him becoming a celebrated song-writer. But it is only through his relationships and affairs with the likes of France Gall, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin that he becomes a veritable force in music and French popular culture. Despite this ensuing success his life and career remained turbulent until the end, as he provoked the establishment while blazing a musical trail that has continued to inspire generations ever since. Eric Elmosnino is terrific as Gainsbourg and the late Lucy Gordon is uncannily reminiscent of the beautiful young Birkin. Gainsbourg is studded with his fantastic music but what marks it out from other biographies is that it is a cinematic experience that stands on its own merits. If you know nothing of the man himself or remarkably even if you think you do know him and his music you will find this both surprising and illuminating. Gainsbourg would have approved.

Twelve years after the magnificent Toy Story 2, Pixar revisit their finest moment for a final installment. Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back. As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in daycare where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice. So, it's all for one and one for all as they join Barbie's counterpart Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o'Huggin' Bear to plan their great escape.
