Performance Programme September-December2010

Two recent Dartington highlights for me both happened outside. First of all Boo Hewerdine’s unofficial gig in the garden Temple as part of the HOME festival and then The Turn of the Screw, performed in Dartington’s eerie churchyard. We’d love to hear what your summer highlights have been so do get in touch using our everdeveloping social media tools and channels. We’re not so much going outdoors in autumn as off the estate entirely. We hope you’ll join us for Seth Lakeman in Torquay, 80’s dance with New Art Club in the Ariel Centre, Totnes, and the sublime Ana Silvera in the Barrel House as part of Totnes Festival. Its also a season packed with residencies as part of our Space programme: Graham Fitkin rehearses his national tour with us, Richard Alston Dance Co. joins us for a workshop-led residency, poet Ben Mellor develops his new work Climate Change Myths, English Touring Opera devise an opera in Channing Wood prison and we’ll host a dance residential for emerging South West-based dance artists, working with Dance in Devon, Plymouth Dance and The Works.

Ana Silvera

Matthew Linley Live Art Producer

Ana's ability to weave intense, poetical storytelling into hauntingly tender melodies creates a musical journey that is widely tipped to go mainstream this year.

South West Music School Graduate Showcase

as part of Totnes Festival

Her influences range from Tom Waits, Nina Simone and Joni Mitchell to Bach and Debussy. Ana describes her sound as “lush and tender” - think Jacques Brel in English, with a pinch of Regina Spektor and Leonard Cohen.

Sense of Place

Seth Lakeman

with Nigel Morgan

part of Torbay’s Rock Walk re-opening

A play for four musicians and one actor, by Hugh Nankivell and Peter Oswald. Hazel is locked in a police cell. She is 19. She has been arrested at a demonstration. She wasn't really part of the demonstration. She isn't really part of anything. All she has is her music but that's been taken away. She's alone in her silent cell, except for the mysterious person asleep on the bed. She has got to have music so she makes it in her head. She makes it out of all the things she knows and all the people she knows. She makes it out of the disasters of her life. Will the music save her life? Produced by Peninsula Arts in partnership with South West Music School. Supported by the Dorset Foundation. Performers Alfie Weedon, Harry Smith, Tobie Tripp, Nathan Bawden & Louise Waterfall as Hazel.

Surrounded by the intricate textiles of Jilly Edwards, Nigel Morgan plays music for solo guitar in the lounge of William Lescaze’s High Cross House. This performance brings textile art and sound together in the tailormade environs of Dartington’s modernist architectural gem, High Cross House. The recital includes the world premiere of the full concert version of Sense of Place (commissioned especially for the exhibition) as well as music by Hindemith and Bach. For more: dartington.org/arts/senseofplace

Local lad made good, Seth Lakeman, widely regarded as the UK's foremost folk singer songwriter, makes his eagerly awaited return with new album Hearts & Minds. Seth has taken his storytelling to a new level on this fourth album, embracing universal themes of love, loss and human struggle alongside current issues of war, economic meltdown and greed. This concert takes place as part of a special day of celebrations marking the reopening of Torbay’s iconic Royal Terrace Gardens and Rock Walk, opposite the Princess Theatre. The all-day line-up includes the return of the GeoQuest team, live music and festival activities, building up to light and sound spectacular Time & Tide Act III, just before doors open for Seth’s finale concert. Firmly established as one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras and known worldwide for its superlative performances and award-winning recordings, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields is joined by solo guitarist Morgan Szymanski, the “One To Watch” winner of the 2002 National Guitar Competition in Mexico. Performing a vivacious programme including a commissioned guitar concerto by Alec Roth and selections from Villa Lobos’ Bachianas Brasiliaras, this concert will be enjoyable and entertaining.

presents This is Now This is Now is New Art Club’s newest comedy show and the most recent in a long line of hits from comedy dance duo, Pete Shenton and Tom Roden.

“modern dancemeets-comedy fun”

In 1983, Tom illegally taped the first ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ LP onto a C60 cassette. 25 years later he found it in a drawer and he and Pete made a show about it...

“Expert comic timing”

Following the success of last year’s Extra Ordinary World, Comedy Dance duo New Art Club deconstruct this classic album to inspire new moves that shed their own twisted light on then, the future and now.

Graham Fitkin Band

Clod Ensemble presents Under Glass

Joby Burgess percussion Aidy Spillet percussion Graham Fitkin piano Simon Haram saxes Nick Moss clarinet Noel Langley trumpet Alan Thomas guitar Ruth Wall harps John Lunn bass

Fresh from winning his 2009 British Composer Award, Graham Fitkin has assembled a 9-piece band of outstanding virtuoso musicians to perform his punchy, no-nonsense music.

Under Glass is a performance which takes place in a series of glass jars and cabinets. The latest work from renowned collaborators Suzy Willson (director) and Paul Clark (composer), Under Glass continues Clod Ensemble’s reputation for work that defies traditional categorization, blending visual imagery, choreography, an original score by Paul Clark and text by poet Alice Oswald, to create an animated exhibition of human life.

Graham’s music is strong, fascinating, immediate and harmonically sumptuous. Allusions can be drawn to be-bop and systems music, composers Terry Riley and Philip Glass and bands Goldfrapp and Bellowhead.

At once museum exhibit, gallery, medical laboratory, Under Glass lifts characters out of the hurly burly of everyday life and frames their moments of solitude; examining human beings attempting, with varying success, to live within their limits. N.B. These performances each last 30 minutes and have a limited capacity of 40. A Sadler’s Wells Commission. Produced by Fuel. Supported by the Wellcome Trust People Award. Classical Music & Song

The musical world in 17th Century was divided between French and Italian style but at the end of the century there were attempts to reconcile these differences in the spirit of reconciliation Muffat and Couperin celebrated with compositions that articulated the truce.

Another great opportunity to see three exceptionally talented young musicians perform at the start of their musical development with South West Music School. The afternoon’s entertainment includes classical works for cello, piano and voice.

presented by Playgoers Society of Dartington Hall Directed by Juliet Harper

Here Come the Girls…! The Odd Couple is Neil Simon’s adaptation of his own play about Felix and Oscar, the comical mismatched roommates made famous in the 1968 film by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. This female version sees Felix become the neurotic and obsessive Florence, and Oscar become the carefree and slovenly Olive. Their chalk-and-cheese relationship emerges from some extremely funny and sassy writing. Set in 1980s New York, Olive, Florence and their girlfriends are the original Sex in the City girls!

This is a seated event with some space at the back of auditorium for dancing.
