About Dartington

2

Based near Totnes in South Devon, we occupy a 1,200 acre estate which was bought in the 1920s by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst as the base for their experiment in rural regeneration. Today Dartington remains true to the ethos of the Elmhirsts, committed, like them, to solving the problems of our time through experimentation, collaboration and new ideas. We work in three areas: the arts, social justice and sustainability and our commercial enterprises support our work. Dartington is a beautiful, inspiring place with and we welcome visitors all year round. Whilst you’re here, explore our grounds and gardens, have lunch at the White Hart and drop into the Shops at Dartington on your way home. You’ll be helping to support our work. Barn Cinema Introduction January/February is always our busiest period at the Barn Cinema, in no small part thanks to a little thing called the Academy Awards. Cold, dark nights also help to create an atmosphere conducive to film-going, as cinema has to all intents and purposes replaced sitting around a fire and sharing communal stories that pass on shared wisdom, educate, inform and entertain. Last year The King’s Speech did many of these things so well that its rollercoaster effect swept aside all award competition and it became our biggest film ever. How do you top that? Well the only possible contender was shot ten miles away from Dartington by the most successful filmmaker of the modern era and based on a modern classic. So the only question is, what’s not to like about War Horse? Join us to to share in this big screen experience alongside other Oscar contenders, The Artist, The Descendents and Carnage as well as the smaller gems that reach places those bigger films just don’t dare to go.

Take Shelter [15] Tuesday 3 & Wednesday 4 January / 8pm Thursday 5 January / 5pm Director Jeff Nichols Cast Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain USA 2011 / Colour / 2h

Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father questions his own sanity as he is driven to prepare his family for the coming storm. The stunning performance from Michael Shannon marks the film as a truly memorable metaphoric depiction of the growing world crisis.

Brad Pitt is a surefire contender for Oscar glory in this superbly written role of the true life Oakland A’s manager Billy Beane. Using computer analysis he put together a team of misfits and journeymen who took on and beat the biggest names in baseball. This year’s Social Network.

Sherlock Holmes: AGameof Shadows [12A] Friday 6 & Saturday 7 January / 8pm Sunday 8 January / 3pm Monday 9 & Tuesday 10 January / 8pm Wednesday 11 January / 5pm Thursday 12 January / 2pm & 8pm Director Guy Ritchie Cast Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Jared Harris USA 2011 / 2hr 8m

The main cast of the hugely entertaining retake on Shelock Holmes reunite for an even more explosive followup. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence points to suicide. Holmes deduces however that the prince has been the victim of murder – a murder that is only one piece of a more portentous puzzle, designed by one Professor Moriarty. Not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but Moriarty’s capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective.

Romantics Anonymous [12A] Friday 6 & Saturday 7 January / 5pm Sunday 8 January / 8pm Monday 9 & Tuesday 10 January / 5pm Director Jean-Pierre Ameris Cast Benoit Poelvoorde, Isabelle Carre Fr/Bel 2010 / Subtitles / 1hr 18m

Struggling chocolatier Jean-René, who also suffers from a similar case of awkward bashfulness, hires Angélique as his new sales associate. Realising she’s attracted to her boss, Angélique decides to anonymously develop a new line of chocolates to save the company. With the future of the business hanging in the balance, Angélique and Jean-René must overcome their limitations and confess their sweet affections for one another in this delectable comedy.

Another Earth [12A]

We Have a Pope [PG]

Wednesday 11 January / 8pm Thursday 12 January / 5pm Director Mike Cahill Cast William Mapother, Brit Marling USA 2011 / 1hr 32m

Friday 13 January / 5pm Saturday 14 January / 8pm Sunday 15 January / 3pm Director Nanni Moretti Cast Michel Piccoli, Nanni Moretti, Jerzy Stuhr Italy/France 2011 / Subtitles / 1hr 45m

On the night of the discovery of a duplicate planet in the solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident. Original and touching, this Sundance favourite marks new talent to watch.

When the French Pope-elect suffers a crisis of confidence the frustrated, sequestered Cardinals seek assistance from a sceptical psychotherapist played by the director himself. A wickedly satirical look behind the Vatican curtain.

The Well Digger’s Daughter [PG] Friday 13 January / 8pm Saturday 14 January / 5pm Sunday 15 & Monday 16 January / 8pm Tuesday 17 January / 5pm Wednesday 18 January / 5pm Thursday 19 January / 2pm & 8pm Director Daniel Auteuil Cast Daniel Auteuil, Kad Merad, Sabine Azema France 2011 / Subtitles / 1hr 49m

Acclaimed French actor Daniel Auteuil, who gained international recognition after starring in Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, has chosen another Pagnol remake for his debut feature as a director. This beautiful and classic piece of filmmaking proves his choice a triumphant one.

Meal Deal see page 25

Set in 1940s Provence, Auteuil also stars as the wily, characterful Pascal, a well-digger raising his six daughters alone after the death of his wife. But his hopes for his favourite daughter falter when she discovers she is pregnant just as her boyfriend Jacques marches off to war. When Jacques’ wealthy family refuse any contact with Patricia, Pascal, proud and stubborn, faces hard choices about how best to help her.

Las Acacias [12A] Monday 16 January / 5pm Tuesday 17 January / 8pm Director Pablo Giorgelli, Cast German De Silva, Hebe Duarte Arg/Spain 2011 / Subtitles / 1hr 26m

A prize winner at both the Cannes and London film festivals this stunningly simple film follows a lonely truck driver hauling wood from Paraguay to Buenos Aires who picks up up a woman and her baby. As they travel and talk they slowly sip into each other's souls. Beguiling.

Magic Trip [15] Wednesday 18 January / 8pm Thursday 19 January / 5pm Director Alison Ellwood, Alex Gibney Documentary Ken Kesey, Timothy Leary USA 2011 / Colour, B&W / 1hr 47m

Pieced together from original archive footage shot on the Electric Kool Aid Acid Trip, this freewheeling portrait of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters’ fabled road trip across America is a genuine piece of counter-culture history.

The Lady [tbc] Friday 20 & Saturday 21 January / 5pm Sunday 22 January / 3pm Monday 23 January / 8pm Tuesday 24 January / 5pm Wednesday 25 January / 8pm Thursday 26 January / 2pm & 5pm Director Luc Besson Cast Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis France/UK 2011 / Running time tbc

The Lady is the story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma's democracy movement but it is also an epic love story. Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris, despite distance, long separations, and a dangerously hostile regime, have sacrificed their personal and familial happiness showing endurance and devotion for each other and for a higher cause. Director Luc Besson has taken on the story as a very personal project that may seem at odds with his action genre profile yet with the casting of its two exceptional leads he delivers a touching yet politically charged story that resonates with the turmoil still raging underground in Burma.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [18] Friday 20 - Sunday 22 January / 8pm Monday 23 January / 5pm Tuesday 24 January / 8pm Wednesday 25 January / 5pm Thursday 26 January / 8pm Director David Fincher Cast Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara Stellen Skarsgard, Christopher Plummer USA/UK/Swe/Ger 2011 / Running time tbc

As good as the original Swedish version of Stieg Larsson’s best seller was, we should all be intrigued enough to see it remade by a truly visionary director in David Fincher. With the role of journalist Mikael Blomkvist taken by Daniel Craig seeming like a good match, the big question revolves around the casting of the little known Rooney Mara in the role of Lisbeth Salander. Noomi Rapace’s steps will be much harder to follow in, but the decision not to Americanise the source material and in fact shoot in Sweden points to an authenticity that promises much.

Shame [18] Friday 27 & Saturday 28 January / 8pm Sunday 29 January / 3pm Monday 30 January / 5pm Tuesday 31 January / 8pm Wednesday 1 February / 8pm Thursday 2 February / 5pm Director Steve McQueen Cast Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan UK 2011 / 1hr 41m

Winner of both the Best Actor and Critics award for best film at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Steve McQueen’s follow-up to the award winning Hunger again stars Michael Fassbender, this time as Brandon, a New York corporate executive, addicted to pornography. Unable to forge relationships with women beyond a series of one night stands, Brandon struggles to hold his superficially successful life together in the face of his sexually articulated self-loathing. As with Hunger, McQueen delivers a rigorous, cinematically precise, portrait of a spirit in freefall which packs a massive emotional punch; placing the filmmaker at the forefront of international cinema’s risk takers.

The Iron Lady [12A] Friday 27 & Saturday 28 January / 5pm Sunday 29 January / 8pm Monday 30 January / 8pm Tuesday 31 January / 5pm Wednesday 1 February / 5pm Thursday 2 February / 2pm Director Phyllida Lloyd Cast Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent UK 2011 / 1hr 44m

This biopic of the most admired - and most despised - political figure in British 20th century politics tells a very conventional ascent to power story but intermingles elements of the undoubted love story between Maggie and Dennis, told from the perspective of old age. Meryl Streep steps into the lead role to suggest some of the woman behind the political icon while director Phyllida Lloyd will be hoping to repeat the commercial success of Mamma Mia! But will it be too sympathetic a portrayal for the left? Too superficial for the right? Speculation is rife across the political spectrum and anticipation is high for what will surely be a major cinema event.

InTransition2.0 Thursday 2 February / 8pm Director Emma Goude Documentary UK 2011 / Running time tbc

2009’s film In Transition 1.0 captured the emergent Transition movement, a vibrant grassroots response to peak oil, climate change and economic crisis, much of it filmed by the initiatives themselves. In Transition 2.0 updates the story, showing how much this movement has grown since the first film, and the scale of the change it is catalysing. You’ll see stories of the Brixton Pound’s pioneering ‘pay-by-text’ scheme, the Japanese community energy company set up in response to Fukashima, London’s only underground station with a food garden on it, tale after tale of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. It’s the perfect antidote to gloom-and-doom. Followed by a Q&A with Rob Hopkins from Transition Town Totnes and the film’s director Emma Goude. 8

War Horse [12A] Friday 3 & Saturday 4 February / 5pm & 8.15pm Sunday 5 February / 3pm & 8pm Mon 6 - Wed 8 February / 5pm & 8.15pm Thursday 9 February / 2pm, 5pm & 8.15pm Friday 10 & Saturday 11 February / 5pm & 8.15pm Sunday 12 February / 3pm & 8pm

Monday 13 February / 2pm & 8pm Tuesday 14 February / 2pm & 5pm Wednesday 15 February / 2pm & 5pm Thursday 16 February / 2pm & 8pm Director Steven Spielberg Cast Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, David Thewlis USA 2011 / 2hrs 26mins

Michael Morpurgo’s children’s book dealing with the terrible toll taken by horses during the First World War has slowly filtered into the public conscience, principally through the multi-award winning stage production. Now, filmed on Dartmoor by the world’s biggest director it’s about to explode into the stratosphere. An odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate loyalty and high adventure, War Horse is one of the great stories of friendship and war. Already the favourite to scoop the best picture Oscar this homegrown Meal Deal Devon epic is set to rival Saving Private Ryan as a big-screen adaptation see page 25 that captures the horror and the heroism of war.

L’Atalante [PG] Monday 13 February / 5pm Tuesday 14 February / 8.15pm Director Jean Vigo Cast Jean Dasté, Dita Parlo, Michel Simon France 1934 / B&W / Subtitles / 1hr 29m

Originally released in 1934, Jean Vigo’s first and only full-length feature is one of cinema’s greatest masterpieces. The story is very simple: newly-weds Jean Dasté and Dita Parlo find living on a cramped Seine barge brings tension to their relationship. Their naivety falls prey to the volatile world around them and their own unreadiness to compromise leads to Parlo escaping into the Paris night by herself only to realise what she has left behind. But to this stark narrative Vigo brings a rich array of moods (comic, suspenseful, heart-rendingly romantic) to explore the nuances of every single emotion. Made on a tiny budget, the film exudes an invigorating rawness and intensity that merge to create the loveliest, least maudlin study of human desire ever committed to film.

Surviving Life [15] Wednesday 15 February / 8.15pm Thursday 16 February / 5pm Director Jan Svankmajer Cast Vaclav Helsus, Klára Issová Cz/Slov/Japan 2011 / Subtitles / 1hr 49m

Legendary Czech animator and surrealist Jan Svankmajer (Alice, Faust) returns with his first film in five years, an anarchically funny tale about a man, Eugene, who falls in love with the woman of his dreams – literally. Expounding on (and cheekily refuting) Freudian and Jungian dream logic while dazzling the eye with animation, this manages to be Svankmajer’s most poignant and fully-formed feature to date. Its masterstroke, though, is the zestfully ironic way it harnesses the skewed workings of the subconscious knocking films like Inception and The Matrix into a cocked hat. Just dreamy! 10

Box Office 01803 847070

The Descendents [15] Friday 17 February / 5pm Saturday 18 February / 8pm Sunday 19 February / 2pm & 8pm Monday 20 February / 5pm Tuesday 21 & Wednesday 22 February / 8pm Thursday 23 February / 2pm & 5pm Director Alexander Payne Cast George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Robert Foster US 2011 / 1hr 55m

With his first feature since Sideways, Alexander Payne blends comedy and tragedy in this story of a father's journey to re-examine his past and embrace his future. Matt King - Clooney in a sure to be Oscar nominated role - looks like a man leading a charmed life. Living on Hawaii's Big Island, he has a law practice, a wife and family, and is the trustee of a large family plot of beautiful and valuable land. But when his thrill-seeking wife Elizabeth suffers a boating accident off Waikiki, he's faced with a massive wake-up call. Matt, the 'back-up parent', realises he barely knows his Meal Deal sassy daughters, ten-year-old Scottie and 17-year-old Alexandra, and has little see page 25 idea how to cope with or care for them while his wife lies locked in a coma.

Coriolanus [15] Friday 17 February / 8pm Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 February / 5pm Monday 20 February / 8pm Tuesday 21 & Wednesday 22 February / 5pm Thursday 23 February / 8pm Director Ralph Fiennes Cast Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler UK 2011 / 2hr 3m

Ralph Fiennes flexes considerable directorial muscle in this meaty Shakespeare adaptation, taking the title role of warrior Coriolanus, whose abrasive pride and love of battle are his downfall as a politician. Transposed to mid-1990s in the Balkans, the warfare is close and furious, which alongside the chorus of television news pundits, lends a contemporary action vocabulary to proceedings though original verse is spoken throughout. While Fiennes reaches new heights of bloodthirsty blueeyed intensity, his performance is bolstered by a pedigree cast, including Brian Cox as his persuasive political ally, Gerard Butler alternately brooding and ferocious as his sworn enemy, and James Nesbitt putting in an ultra-weaselly turn as a cynical MP.

The Artist [PG] Friday 24 & Saturday 25 February / 8pm Sunday 26 February / 2pm & 5pm Monday 27 February / 8pm Tuesday 28 February / 5pm Wednesday 29 February / 8pm Thursday 1 March / 2pm & 5pm Director Michel Hazanavicius Cast Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo, John Goodman France 2011 / 1hr 40m

Set against a backdrop of a Tinseltown in transition from silent film to talkies, a whimsical love story emerges between Peppy Miller, an aspiring starlet, and George Valentin, the world’s biggest movie actor. However, in time honoured fashion, as her star soars his star fades. Reaching beyond what is quintessentially a romantic comedy, The Artist is a deftly penned love letter to a bygone age in Hollywood and American cinema. This black-and-white film is (almost) silent, shot entirely on location in Los Angeles and peppered with seamless winks to classics of the silent era and beyond including Citizen Kane, Singin’ in the Rain and The Apartment. Spot-on production design, score and cinematography lovingly recreate a 1920s Hollywood somewhere between legend and reality. This could be the film to take the award season by surprise having already won the NY Critics prize.

Carnage [15] Friday 24 & Saturday 25 February / 5pm Sunday 26 February / 8pm Monday 27 February / 5pm Tuesday 28 February / 8pm Wednesday 29 February / 5pm Thursday 1 March / 8pm Director Roman Polanski Cast Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, John C Reilly Fr/Ger/Sp/Po 2011 / 1hr 19m

Adapted by Roman Polanski and playwright Yasmina Reza from her own Tony award-winning play The God of Carnage, this new film from the veteran auteur is a brilliantly sustained one-scene comic drama which exposes the hypocrisy, doublethinking and charmlessness of the modern bourgeoisie. The action takes place in real time, in the Brooklyn apartment of the Longstreets, whose son has been hit with a stick by another boy. The Longstreets have invited round the Cowans, the parents of the other child, to try to come to an amicable agreement about how to resolve the incident. Bravura acting and insights into parent/ child relationships most of us will recognise keep laughs and tension on an equal footing. 12

Seasonal highlights - winter Look for the Lucombe Oak by the house near the churchyard. A hybrid cross between evergreen Spanish cork oak and the deciduous Turkey Oak, the tree loses its leaves when it gets very cold, but in milder winters remains evergreen. The witchhazels near Flora bloom early in the new year followed by crocuses - at their most spectacular in the crocus circle on the Great Lawn under the big Turkey Oak at the end of winter.
