Professional Development Courses Creative Composition 28 July – 4 August 2012; 11am – 1pm daily Director Philip Cashian This course is for: Secondary school music teachers who are keen to develop their own composing skills, and their confidence in helping students to develop work creatively. A week of practical composition workshops during which teachers will have the opportunity to focus on their own creative work. The course will engage with a creative approach to teaching and learning through giving teachers support in developing their own compositional skills, with time for evaluation, listening and reflection. The intention is that through gaining increased confidence and skills themselves as composers, teachers are subsequently able to support their students further in developing their compositional skills, and meeting exam criteria for creating imaginative and expressive compositions, for creative realisation of ideas, and for successfully developing musical ideas. Course leader Philip Cashian is Head of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music. “First and foremost, Cashian’s work is musicianly, written without need of grand accompanying statements for musicians, at whatever level, to play. It is also, as players and listeners will discover, the emanation of a vivid imagination, possessed of a narrative strength that can sweep the listener along on journeys to unanticipated destinations.” Matthew Greenall, Music Teacher magazine, repertoire guide, July 2005 If attending the Summer School full time, you can choose this and up to three additional courses per day: see highlighted courses below, or view the whole programme at www.dartington.org/summer-school
