Alongside this season of live performance, which is increasingly connected to debate in sustainability and social justice, we are honoured to support artist development and the creation of new performance. In January we host English Touring Opera as they work on Alexander Goehr's new opera, Promised End. In March Helen Chadwick (www.helenchadwick.com) is in residence to develop a new piece and in April we partner with Dance South West to host Youth Dance England's Stride! residency for young dance entrepreneurs. It's an exciting phase for our programming, which is set to grow as space for artists to rehearse and create is more readily available from October. Peter Oswald & Pinocchio Hugh Nankivell By Indefinite Articles present Birdsongs
An extensive series of free verse poems were written by Peter Oswald over several years, many at Dartington whilst he was resident here (1998-2005). These works were set to piano and voice by Hugh Nankivell in 2009. In this performance a selection of these works are sung and played by Hugh and read by Peter. The poems are not ornithological. They are birds of the imagination and new forms kindly given to the imagination by birds. They do not imitate bird calls but are crafted from the words, minimalist expressionist settings with occasional flurries of improvisation. Geppetto uses the objects of a carpenter’s workshop to tell the tale of the puppet that wants to be a real boy as Pinocchio is carved on stage. Brought to us by the same inventive company that created Claytime, improvisation makes each Pinocchio performance unique to its audience. Award-winning Indefinite Articles are at the forefront of a new wave of British puppetry. Its members have worked with the RSC, Improbable Theatre and The Mighty Boosh. Justin Adams & Juldeh Camera Justin Adams has been at the cutting edge of world music alchemy since the 1990s, working with artists including Jah Wobble, Robert Plant (Adams co-wrote The Mighty Rearranger), The Festival of the Desert and Tinariwen. Juldeh Camara is an African master musician, taught to play by his father, who himself was taught directly by the djinn, he plays the ritti, a one-stringed fiddle (West African ancestor of the violin). Together they combine to make a sound where the deep roots of African music nourish the raw
electric groove of rock and roll, where Gnawa spirit rhythms come up against Chicago distortion and snaky N'awlins rhythm has a West London howl. Justin & Juldeh's first album Soul Science was winner of the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award (Crossing Continents category) and their second album Tell No Lies was released in 2009. Critically acclaimed artist Monica Ross will recite from memory the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Debussy Violin sonata in G minor L140 Beethoven G major sonata Op 30 no 3 Brahms Sonata in D minor no 3 Sarasate Carmen Fantasy A regular performer at Dartington International Summer School, Matthew Trusler graduated from Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music in 1998. Trusler’s latest record, Blues, won huge critical acclaim, including “Best CD” list in the Telegraph, Strad magazine and on Classic FM. Tonight's concert raises funds for Friends of South Devon College, a charity providing financial support to students through awards, bursaries and donations, helping ensure that financial hardship isn’t a barrier to education. It also raises funds for Matthew's own charity The Lenny Trusler Children's Foundation, dedicated to helping provide relief of serious illness in newborn babies and infants in the UK and abroad.
An Act of Memory
The work is an act of witness as a method of drawing attention to the continuing need to re-iterate the importance of the Universal Declaration. Rather than the absence of mind associated with learning by rote, recitation by memory proposes the attempt to learn the Declaration by heart as a basis for developing presence of mind. It places an emphasis on the attempt and difficulty of meeting the Declaration's call to constantly 'keep it in mind' and to voice or act on it - especially when under pressure. As the audience you are invited to witness this Act of Memory, the recitation will be followed by a Q&A with Monica. Music, Film & Dance With South West Music School & Youth Dance Academy South West Music School and Youth Dance Academy students have been resident at Dartington throughout the weekend developing their skills in film composition and devising dance for film. During the weekend they have created original works for short films including newly digitalised silent footage from the Dartington Hall archive featuring, among others, a film performance of Ballet Jooss’ 1935 Danse Macabre. A hugely successful event last year, this performance (at 4.30pm, repeated at 6pm) sees the students performing their works live alongside the selected footage. This innovative SWMS project enables the artists supported by Dartington in the 1930s to inspire the emerging artists we are supporting today.

Rainbow Chasers Ashley Hutchings’ - best known as founder of Fairport Convention - current band, Rainbow Chasers, was formed in mid-2004. The line-up features Ashley (bass guitar & vocals), Ruth Angell (vocals, violin, acoustic guitar), Jo Hamilton (vocals, viola, acoustic guitar) & Joe Topping (vocals, acoustic guitar). Labelled “the best acoustic group in the country” by Show of Hand's Phil Beer, the band combines the highest level of skill and sophistication to a semi-acoustic programme of sensitive arrangements complimented by inspired vocals. The band's musical identity incorporates elements of folk and traditional song as well as drawing on the classical training of Angell and Hamilton. This evening they will perform tracks from both their albums, Some Colours Fly and Fortune Never Sleeps.

Inua Ellams’ The 14th Tale A free flowing melodic narrative telling the entertaining exploits of a natural born mischief-maker growing from the clay streets of Nigeria to rooftops in Dublin, and finally to London. Inua Ellams is a word and graphic artist with a reputation for iconic imagery, unashamed beauty and attention to detail. In this solo show he vividly recreates the characters that punctuate his upbringing in deft and beautiful poetry, while challenging the audience's expectation of what it is to be a young, black male in London today. presents Class of ‘76 In 1999 Third Angel made a performance based on a class photograph taken in 1976. They made stuff up about the children in it. In 2000 they performed it again, on the spot where the photograph was taken 24 years earlier. This time they told the truth. Ever since then, they’ve been asked to tell the story of how it all came about. 35 children all in the same place doing the same thing, sharing an experience. What have they done and what has happened to them? Raising questions about disappointment and achievement, this is a fresh and funny live art performance for the friendsreunited generation. Class of ’76 is Third Angel’s most enduring show, revised and updated for this 10th Anniversary tour.

Le Jardin Secret presents Veiled
In 2008 Jackie Oates was nominated as best newcomer in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and a swathe of glowing national reviews followed the release of her album, The Violet Hour, which was included on Mojo's top ten folk albums of 2008.
In the Baroque period Holy Week was marked by the suspension of secular music, as music became the primary medium of the liturgy. The result was the finest, most intense music of the period was brought off the opera stage and into the church.
In 2009 her status as a solo artist was cemented when she won two more BBC Folk Awards: the Horizon Award for Best Newcomer and the Best Traditional Track Award. Jackie is based in the South West and tonight presents music from her latest album Hyperboreans.
With soprano Elizabeth Dobbin, Le Jardin Secret performs 17th & 18th century repertoire with dedicated attention to historical context. The first of two energetic and highly inspirational performances given by the National Youth Jazz Collective's regional members, led by three of the Collective's most celebrated of educators: critically acclaimed composer, baritone player and NYJC's Chief Executive Issie Barratt; award winning singer/pianist Pete Churchill and national renowned saxophonist Mick Foster. The National Youth Jazz Collective is a vibrant National Youth Music organisation, funded by Youth Music and designed to support the creative and educational needs of the young jazz musicians through regional projects and an annual National Youth Jazz Summer School.
Music & Dance South West This collaborative performance is part of a national fortnight celebrating the country’s young, exceptionally talented musicians and dancers. This event in the Great Hall highlights the South West’s young professionals supported by DCSF’s Music & Dance Scheme. Perfomers will be drawn from Youth Dance Academy, Wells Cathedral School and South West Music School and the programme ranges across contemporary dance and original songs to Baroque repertoire and Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony.

The Clockwork Moth presents Philip Pullman’s Clockwork, or All Wound Up A shadow play for adults and children. Snow falls silently through the mountains. The woods whisper treacherous secrets. The clock of Glockenheim chimes midnight. By the fireside a crowd has gathered and a budding storyteller spins a terrifying yarn. A surgical clockwork-master approaches, bearing a sinister purpose… From the author of His Dark Materials trilogy, The Clockwork Moth presents a macabre and humorous fable of unravelling fortunes, where truth and fiction are woven together, exploring our unsettling power to wind up the cogs of fate.
Supported by live music from The Hillbilly Girls, stunning scenery and a diversity of subtly crafted puppets, Clockwork breathes with life and atmosphere and hearkens back to the forgotten glory-days of European shadowtheatre with Victorian finesse and delicacy. The Clockwork Moth is an emerging SouthWest based performing arts company. Led by former Dartington College of Arts students Charlie Scullion and Victoria Narewski, this show is directed and performed by both. Urban Folk Quartet
Evolving Motion presents Duod
Joe Broughton Fiddle, Guitar, Mandolin Paloma Trigas Fiddle Frank Moon Guitar, Oud, Vocals Tom Chapman Cajon, Percussion, Vocals The Urban Folk Quartet launched in June 2009. Headlining major festivals from day one they played in the UK, Italy, Belgium and Spain in the first 3 months, won the Spanish International Folk Competition on only their fourth performance and are due to release their debut album the month of this gig. Members of the band have played with The Chieftains, The Albion Band, Carlos Nunez, The Destroyers, Old Dance School, Chris While and Bellowhead amongst others. They are hugely popular locally, known especially for their FolkWorld summer course during the Dartington Summer Youth Programme, and their live performance is second to none.
Involving intimate interaction with the audience, seated at the rim of an 8ft skirt, the story unfolds as the performers dance its dynamic arc in a transformation from cocoon to flight. Visuals, music and movement cascade amidst raging physicality as the dancers explore degrees of twoness, creating exquisite tensions through cooperation and conflict. Finally the audience becomes integrated into the mesh, literally holding the dancers between their grasp. A 60 minute in-the-round performance with live music (Christopher Benstead) and spectacular visual design (Rosalind Noctor), Duod is choreographed & performed by Cathy Seago in collaboration with Rosalind Noctor.

Written in 1860 by Charles Dickens but reclaimed for a contemporary audience in this vibrant new stage adaptation, this classic tale of the orphan Pip's journey from childhood to becoming a gentleman lays bare the tissue of lies and guilt in Dickens' least sentimental love story. Originally performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2005, here the adaptation is performed by local community dramatic society, The Playgoers of Dartington Hall.
Great Expectations
Founded by Harry Blech in 1949 as the UK's first chamber orchestra, London Mozart Players (LMP) is regarded as one of the country’s finest ensembles. Internationally renowned for its outstanding live performances, CD recordings and its definitive renderings of the core Classical repertoire, the LMP also plays an active part in contemporary music, giving many world premières and commissioning new works. Here the LMP perform with South West based poet, columnist and regular BBC Radio 4 contributor Matt Harvey as narrator of The Carnival of the Animals.

Acclaimed for their powerful energy Dulsori have been taking the Korean percussive style known as pungmul to a whole new level. The performers use kkwanggwari (small handheld drum), jing (gong) and numerous other percussion with an outstanding choreography to create beats that stir the audience. Dulsori rekindle the spirit of ancient Korean festivals where the audience and performer energy combine together. “We aim to break the barriers between the players and the audience in staging our performances” says Dulsori director Moon Kop-Hyuan. National Youth Jazz Collective with Steve Waterman and Pete Churchill On Saturday 24 April legendary trumpet player & jazz luminary Steve Waterman and award-winning singer/pianist Pete Churchill are joined by two of the nation’s most in demand rhythm section players, bassist Mark Hodgson and drummer Andrew Bain, to create a spectacular and memorable jazz quartet gig. All four musicians are tutors for the National Youth Jazz Collective, a vibrant National Youth Music organisation designed to support the creative and educational needs of young jazz musicians. (Running time 2 hrs) On Sunday 25 April the leading Devon members of the Collective will join Pete, Andrew and Mark for a free family concert in the Ariel Centre at 3pm. (Running time 1 hr)

presents Home of the Wriggler It is 3006, and underground, sheltered from the raging weather, an investigation into pollution and global warming is gridlocked, the prosecution and defence teams lost focus and power generations go. Procedure has gone way out of the window and the irregular has become highly regular. Today the enquiry will continue to learn the legends of a place called The West Midlands, the people who lived there and the mythical things they once made called cars.
A lo-fi sci-fi docu-drama set in a world where oil has run out, the cast generate all the power the show requires live on stage using a range of ageing technologies. Birmingham-based Stan's Cafe has been devising inventive, amusing and thoughtful theatre since 1991. Part DIY musical, part fairy-tale, Alice Bell offers a portrait of life as an act of hope, life as something to sing and dance about.
Daniel Hit by A Train 5.00pm - inspired by a Victorian collection of 53 true stories about people losing their lives in the act of saving another, this work tells each tragedy in turn, in all their comedic, vaudevillian glory. Sincere but unafraid to raise a smile to these most selfless of souls Daniel Hit by A Train stands as a testimony to our abiding need to help each other. The Festival 7.30pm - this work continues the company's playful approach to storytelling, narrative and song, presenting an episode in the life of a character where chance and coincidence leave an indelible mark. Visual Art & Craft Collection of 20th Century Visual Art Many visitors who enjoy and support our live arts and film programmes may not be also aware of Dartington’s substantial collection of 20th century visual art, the majority of which was collected by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst. Believed to be England’s most significant private patrons of 20th century art, Leonard & Dorothy collected ceramics on the advice of Bernard Leach and pictures, particularly by young up-and- coming artists. Within the collection there is strong representation by artists who called Dartington home, such as David and Bernard Leach, Cecil and Elisabeth Collins, Mark Tobey and Marianne de Trey. Recently having become part of The Arts at Dartington, the team is currently exploring ways to best conserve and exhibit the collection.
Craft Education at Dartington Dartington is home to specialist craft makers and sculptors, two of whom run book-binding and print-making classes throughout the year, open to all levels of experience from beginners to experienced artists. Held by Mary Bartlett (book-binding) and Michael Honnor (print-making), the workshops boast unique collections of expertise and equipment and are among the best in the South West.
