Totó La Momposina Totó La Momposina’s life has been dedicated to representing the music of Colombia’s Caribbean coastline. As a singer, dancer and teacher she embodies that fertile place where Colombia’s African, Indigenous Indian and Spanish cultures mingle to create a unique musical tradition. Totó is not only its greatest interpreter, but a restless innovator who has earned respect and admiration in many parts of the world for the power and spontaneity of her performance. She began touring internationally in the 70s with global fame cemented in the 90s with a WOMAD tour across three continents and the release of her album La Candela Viva on Real World Records.

World-renowned tenor Ian Bostridge joins the OAE and directors Steven Devine and Matthew Truscott for a concert which features some of Handel's most beloved arias. From the breathtaking beauty of Where 'er you walk through to the intensely dramatic Ariodante, the concert showcases Ian's voice brilliantly & is a fabulous way to celebrate Handel's 250th anniversary.

and Ian Bostridge present The Voice of Handel Overture from Messiah Messiah “Comfort ye ... Ev'ry Valley" Concerto Grosso Op.6 No.9 in F Semele "Where 'er you walk" Jeptha "Waft her, angels" Concerto Grosso Op.6 No.10 in D minor Ariodante "Scherza Infida" Suite from Terpsichore Acis & Galatea "Love sounds the alarm"

We’re delighted to welcome back an orchestra that is rightfully regarded as one of the world's greats. As anyone at OAE’s previous sell-out Dartington concerts will know, the orchestra’s musicians play with a thrilling vibrancy and energy that takes period performance from the fringes of music-making into the heart of the musical world.

The Drowning Room An installation Visual artist Kate Marshall and sound artist Ben Hudson collaborate in this live art work, curated by Gareth Ballyn and inspired by Michael Pye’s novel The Drowning Room, the fictional account of Gretje Reyniers, who travelled from Holland to New York in the 1940s. Pye creates a vivid and shocking world in which Reyniers experiences life as a maid, whore, mother, widow and survivor. You are invited to explore what memories are and how we re-invent ourselves through our own stories.

Matthew Board & the Family Tree Led by Matt Board on guitar, vocals, mandolin and ukulele, The Family Tree’s influences range from Elbow to Arcade Fire to Sigur Rós. The 5 piece band, often likened to current chart toppers The Maccabees, have been working and studying at Dartington while also developing their work at Sawmills Studios. Recently having performed at the O2 Academy in Bristol and other venues up and down the country, the Family Tree has accumulated a strong following of dedicated fans, with songs including Foxhole, Lifebelt and Point d’Alma. The Family Tree return to play at Dartington in a performance set to be unforgettable, as they perform these tracks alongside new debut material created specifically for the atmosphere and acoustic of the Great Hall. “ Sawmills has followed the evolution of The Family Tree and has been thrilled at the development of a singer/songwriter into a captivating live band” Tom Joyce, Sawmills Studio www.matthewboard.com www.myspace.com/matthewboard In association with MA Show Dartington 09

Young Artist Showcase

A comedy about broken vows, failed hopes and the joys of beekeeping. Written for the National Theatre in 2001, Charlotte Jones’ witty play focuses on the theme of life in both a family and an apiary. Well known actress and director Lesley Davis returns to direct Playgoers in this delightful modern classic, which is sure to bring a broad smile to the face. Felix Humble is a modern day Hamlet, returning home stricken by his father’s death and his mother’s proposed re-marriage. Meanwhile, his father’s once busy beehive has fallen silent, which seems more than coincidence...

Film Archive Restoration Project Dartington Hall founders the Elmhirsts were at the cutting edge of education, agriculture, social regeneration and the arts, including the use of film to document, educate and entertain. The documentation of the restoration of the estate, research trips, community events and local industry led to the amassing of up to 700 hours of film and video footage. This footage, along with short films by the pioneering Dartington Film Unit, forms the nationally significant Dartington Film Collection. Today the decades old collection is in a vulnerable condition requiring immediate attention. The Film Conservation Project aims to bring the collection back into full use, turning it into an accessible resource that can be shared and enjoyed. www.dartington.org/flmarchive for info
