Welcome to November / December at Dartington, and 2 months of fantastic films, events, courses and more. In November we’re delighted to present ‘Live at the Great Hall’ a weekend of some of the best upcoming bands on the 23 – 24 November – see page 19 for details. We also have performances from perennial favourites Devon Baroque, Dartington Community Choir and Playgoers. We’ll be getting festive in December with our Christmas Market at The Shops at Dartington, a carol concert with children from local primary schools on 10 December, The Exeter University Singers presenting a traditional carol concert in the Great Hall, a family panto and ‘live’ screenings of everyone’s favourite festive ballet, The Nutcracker. News In Brief Book online and you could win a festive evening at Dartington Did you know we have recently improved our online booking for films and events at Dartington? Annual Permit Parking Available Thanks to everyone who fed back to us about parking on the Dartington estate and an annual permit scheme for regular visitors. In response to this we have finalised details of our new annual permit scheme, which will be available through Dartington’s membership scheme from 1st November. Our enhanced membership package now offers an annual parking permit, free mailings of this What’s On Guide, 10% off at the Shops at Dartington, £1 off cinema tickets, a members’ newsletter and invitations to exclusive members events for a total cost of £50 a year (or £75 for dual members). Electric Charging Point Now Available
Thursday 20 September saw the official launch of our new electric car charging point in the main Pay & Display car park at Dartington Hall. To test the new facility local Renault dealers Vospers kindly loaned their new electric car, the zippy two-seater Renault Twizy, to John Fiske, our Energy & Sustainability Coordinator. We’re happy to report the charging point received a double thumbs up! The charging point has both 13amp and 32 amp outlets and it’s free for visitors to charge their vehicle (although the hourly parking charge applies).

Barn Cinema Introduction 2012 gave us some of independent cinema’s most successful films of recent years. The King’s Speech, The Artist, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and War Horse were all big hits at the Barn. The good news is that the year will also close with several spectacular films; Beasts of the Southern Wild, Skyfall, The Master and Great Expectations, to name just a few. There is a new and exciting development at the Barn this winter. From December, we are presenting a series of productions from The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, beamed live via satellite into the Barn Cinema. Join us for the first live screenings of The Nutcracker on 13 December and Aida on 15 December. See pages 10 & 11 for more details. As we approach Christmas, there is plenty to keep the family entertained at Dartington. The Barn Cinema is no exception with our range of classic Christmas films. See pages 13 and 20 for listings. From the very first notes of Tchaikovsky’s overture to The Nutcracker, a sense of mystery and magic pervades the theatre as Herr Drosselmeyer sets in train the events that will see his beloved nephew, Hans Peter, freed from the enchantment of the evil Mouse King by the resourceful Clara. The Nutcracker unfolds over two glorious acts. For Act I it is Christmas Eve and we are brought to a party at which Drosselmeyer gives young Clara a nutcracker doll – beginning a night that includes a magically growing Christmas tree, a midnight battle of toy soldiers at which the Nutcracker defeats the villainous Mouse King and his army of mice, and a headlong pas de deux in which Clara and Hans Peter meet and celebrate their triumph before being enveloped in a magical snowstorm. Act II whisks the young pair off to the Kingdom of the Sweets, where they are entertained by the Sugar Plum Fairy with her handsome Prince and her glittering court in a series of dazzling dances. Peter Wright’s classic production, first seen at Covent Garden in 1984, is an essential part of Christmas for audiences of all ages.

Autumn Residencies
Supporting and nurturing artists through the provision of the very best facilities and career support Over the past year, we have worked hard to enable more artists to develop their professional practice here in a stable, well managed and supportive environment with access to high-quality studios. Our residency programme now has 3 strands: Work/Live Residencies for artists or groups who need the space to explore and create during an immersive period; our Open Call Award which brings together artists and provides free studios and support; and Standby Space, where artists can register to use spaces ‘at the drop of a hat’. We provide opportunities for engagement with our communities and audiences and we always encourage risk-taking which can have a profound impact on an artist’s work.
In Between Time
In Between Time is a Bristol based international production company creating extraordinary works of art. They are here hosting a week long residency bringing together a number of their associate artists who will all be working on new commissions ahead of their premiere at the IBT13 International Festival of Performance, which takes place across arts venues and public sites in Bristol 14-17 Feb 2013. EarFilms
EarFilms is a unique company that produces films purely using audio, creating cutting-edge cinematic experiences fusing live story-telling, 3D sound and cinematic musical scores. Audiences are blindfolded to focus their senses and unlock their imaginations. They are here working on their new film, To Sleep – To Dream, about a world devastated by floods in which only one habitable city remains, owned and controlled by only one company, where its inhabitants are not allowed to dream.
Spread the Word
Spread the Word is London’s writer development agency, nurturing and providing support for writers of all forms wherever they find them. This year they are offering a unique opportunity for writers to explore performance as an extension of their work. As part of Interrogate! Festival they contributed especially penned works at the Cabaret and other events across the weekend. The Dartington Hall Estate is located 1 mile from Totnes in the heart of South Devon. By Train: Dartington is a 25 mins walk or a short taxi ride from Totnes Railway Station. By Bus: Nearby Totnes is served by the National Express and local services. Dartington is served by the Stagecoach service #165 from the main bus stop in Totnes (outside Morrisons). Info on 0870 6082608 or www.countrybusdevon.co.uk. By Bike: There are bike parks available at Dartington; if you plan to use these please bring your own lock. By Car: We’re 30 minutes south of Exeter and north of Plymouth on the M5/A38. From the A38 follow signs to Totnes. On-site parking is available. Our postcode, for sat nav, is TQ9 6EL. Pay and Display parking on site is 30p per hour. On Foot: A level footpath runs from Totnes station along the river before turning right onto the Dartington Hall drive for the last (hilly) 3/4 mile.
Gardens
Dartington’s beautiful Grade II* Listed gardens are open dawn to dusk, throughout the year. Please consider a voluntary donation of £3 per person to help us with the considerable costs of maintaining the gardens. Groups of 10 or more are asked to make arrangements by appointment. Please note that no dogs are allowed in the gardens except assistance dogs. To maintain the tranquility that you come to enjoy we ask that you do not picnic or play games in the gardens. ‘Taking The Michael’ traces two reunited friends’ faltering odyssey down the St Michael’s Ley Line through South West England - from Wiltshire, through Devon, to St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. Travelling in a pedal-powered 1968 Bond Ranger on ancient byways and green lanes, the pair’s curious pilgrimage is a surreal post-peak oil exploration of this green and pleasant land.
