Welcome to the July/August Edition of What’s On at The Dartington Hall Estate. We are well and truly into the summer months now which brings us nicely into Festival season. From 5 – 15 July we welcome back Ways With Words for another great line-up. This year will see Darcey Bussell, Jonathan Dimbleby, Jack Straw, and many more interesting authors visiting The Estate over the 10-day festival. This year’s Dartington International Summer School programme of teachers and courses looks really impressive. Dartington is a beautiful place to visit any time of year but during Summer School (27 July – 31 August) there’s a little extra bit of magic about the place. The Barn Cinema continues its run of ever popular films old, new and LIVE. July sees the beginning of Dartington International Summer School’s 60th year. Over the five-week festival there will be something to suit every musician’s age and taste, from folk music to gospel choirs, Baroque orchestras to songs from musicals, and Gamelan to guitar. This year the Summer School will welcome guest tutors and performers, such as Ray Davies and Matthew Rose, as well as hosting a great line-up of workshops. There will be many concerts over the five-weeks where students have the chance to show-case the work they have learnt and completed during their Summer School course. The Barn Cinema

Over the coming months The Barn Cinema will continue its usual run of diverse and different screenings. July and August will see a production of Macbeth brought LIVE from the National Theatre; LIVE streamings from Glyndebourne, including Don Pasquale; Springsteen and I, a unique music documentary celebrating Bruce Springsteen; and much more. From 19 July, the Barn will screen at least one late night film every week in their outdoor cinema. Catch Dr. Who and the Daleks, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, The Shining (if you dare!), and many more films, old and new.

Ways With Words

We’re pleased to be welcoming back Ways With Words festival this year. The literature festival takes place from 5-15 July and will see authors and journalists such as A.L. Kennedy, Samar Yazbek, and John Sweeney sharing their thoughts and ideas behind their work. This ten day festival is a perfect way to relax, unwind and immerse yourself in another world of literature and like-minded people. There are plenty of talks and events that you can visit or just enjoy soaking up the atmosphere around The Estate during the festival. Love Food Dartington

After the roaring success of The Shops’ annual food market, Dartington Food Fair, back in May, which saw over 6,000 visitors over the two days, The Shops continue their monthly food markets with gusto! Love Food Dartington is a local food producers market, held at The Shops on the last Sunday of each month (28 July and 25 August). The markets are free to the public and run from 10am-4pm. There is an abundance of food and drink stalls, live entertainment, arts and crafts, family fun, and much more. The Shops team would love to welcome you so do pop along on the last Sunday of the month.

Barn Cinema

Building on the outstanding success of last year’s outdoor films, this year we are introducing a summer long outdoor film programme. Starting with the original Dr Who films, back on the big screen for the first time since the 1960s, our pop-up cinema will operate every Saturday night until the end of August. We will finish our outdoor film series with a grand finale of four evenings of film presented on Dartington’s giant outdoor screen. We are looking forward to sharing a great summer of film with you. DIRECTOR: Alex Gibney CAST: Julian Assange, Bradley Manning USA 2013 | Documentary | 2hrs 10m In 2006, the WikiLeaks website was launched, run by Australian internet activist Julian Assange. The site’s mandate involved regularly publishing top-secret documents and covert information, often relating to governments and their respective military operations. This set off a firestorm between those who admired the organisation’s bravado and resourcefulness, and those who argued, not unjustly, that the dissemination of data regarding events such as the U.S. war in Afghanistan could put untold numbers of lives at risk.

Fighting an inner battle as much as a physical one, he somehow managed to swim in the freezing ocean for six hours and then walk over razor sharp rocks for another two. Scientists have tried and failed to explain how he managed it.

Strong-willed and free-spirited, she is determined to raise enough money to buy a bicycle in a society that sees them as dangerous to a girl’s virtue. Shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, this is the first feature film made by a female Saudi filmmaker. In a country where cinemas are banned and women cannot drive or vote, writer/director Haifaa Al-Mansour has broken many barriers with her new film.

DIRECTOR: Satyajit Ray CAST: Madhabi Mukherjee, Anil Chatterjee India 1963 | Subtitles | 2hrs 13m Satyajit Ray takes a rare foray into social satire with this entrancing and intensely touching film. Bhambal and his wife, Arati, are a happily married middle-class couple living in Calcutta. Theirs is a typical Indian household. He works as a bank official, while she stays at home to care for their extended family. But money is tight, and when Arati gets a job as a salesperson, neither she nor her husband foresee the disruption it will bring to them all.

There, she meets an American journalist, Joe Bradley. Hoping to get an exclusive news story, Joe pretends that he doesn’t recognise her and offers her a guided tour of Rome.

Jack hopes to spend the winter writing but becomes increasingly plagued by strange happenings in the hotel, which has its own disturbing history. Director, Stanley Kubrick, created what many regard as the quintessential horror film of all time. This extended version has an extra 24 minutes.

This Is Spinal Tap [15] DIRECTOR: Rob Reiner CAST: Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner USA 1984 | 1hr 19m Spinal Tap, the world’s loudest band, is chronicled by hack documentarian Marty DiBergi on their American comeback tour. Largely improvised by director Rob Reiner and his cast, this is the ultimate cult film that perfectly parodies the rock ‘n’ roll business. Following an ageing British rock group that has a great line in dead drummers, this hilarious satire contains some of the funniest moments on celluloid, including the amplifier that goes to 11 and the diminutive Stonehenge.

Vertigo has been heralded as one of director Alfred Hitchcock’s finest films and, according to Hitchcock, his most personal one. This 1996 restoration features digitally enhanced colour and sound.

Thursday 25 July, 6:15pm Opera | by Jean-Philippe Rameau Sung in French with English surtitles Tickets £17.50 When Rameau died in 1764, the Mercure de France concluded its obituary with the words “Here lies the God of Harmony.” In many ways he defined 18th-century French music, publishing his widely influential Treaty on Harmony in 1722. Hippolyte et Aricie was Rameau’s first work for the stage, written when he was nearly 50. It is also Glyndebourne’s first production of an opera by Rameau, and will strike audiences, as it did in Paris in 1733, with its richness of invention.

His powerfully dramatic Billy Budd returns to Glyndebourne, with Jacques Imbrailo in the title role and Sir Mark Elder conducting.

Directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, this electrifying new production of Shakespeare’s tragic tale of ambition and treachery unfolds within the walls of an intimate deconsecrated Manchester church.

Tuesday 6 August, 7:15pm Opera | Gaetano Donizetti Sung in Italian with English surtitles. Tickets £17.50 Donizetti was an enormously prolific composer. Don Pasquale is the 64th of his 66 operas, and was written only a year before the onset of the syphilisinduced dementia that was eventually to overwhelm him. Given the circumstances, it is hardly surprising that the diamond-bright wit and brilliance of this opera also has a distinctly dark side. Danielle de Niese, who is acknowledged as one of the world’s most talented and charismatic artists and has been described as “the world’s coolest soprano” by the New York Times, performs the role of Norina.

14 June – 30 September 2013 Dartington Space and High Cross House - FREE Light Is The Activity Of What Is Transparent is a unique exhibition that presents 21 seminal works by artist Suzanne Redstone across two venues to reveal the trajectory of an artist’s practice over five decades, from 1960s to today. Curated by Isabel Carlisle, former curator at the Royal Academy of Arts, the exhibition takes its name from a quote by Aristotle and spreads through the SPACE galleries to the gardens at High Cross House on the Dartington Hall Estate. “There is nothing more thrilling than uncovering something valuable that has been kept hidden for a long time… The sensibility and experimentation of the Sixties is still strong in her work. Her devotion to seeing light differently and marvelling at its beauty is within the discipline of a practised artist. Sadler’s Wells Summer University is a four year programme studying the art and craft of choreography, led by choreographer and writer Jonathan Burrows. It includes fifteen choreographers from a range of styles selected through open call, who are now heading into their third year of the course. And for the first time some elements are taking place at Dartington Space. It is part of the Jerwood Studio at Sadler’s Wells, a pioneering research programme that supports the early stages of large scale projects, as well as a professional development programme. Jane Mason – Life Forces

Following her solo Singer in 2011, Jane Mason’s new work in development is a duet called Life Forces. Working with collaborators; film maker/ animator Magali Charrier and dramaturg David Williams, Life Forces explores the visual, choreographic and performative relationships inspired by and drawing on still images from an archive of Mason’s father’s slides. Projected on an old analogue slide projector, the work is a reflection on ways of seeing, light, and time passing. Following residencies at Bath ICIA, Pavilion Dance, The Point Eastleigh and Swindon Dance, Jane will be in residence at Space prior to sharing an extract of work in progress as part of the Dance Offerings platform. The Dartington Hall Estate is located 1 mile from Totnes in the heart of South Devon.

Please advise us in advance of your access requirements and any assistance needed. Our staff will be pleased to help you.

By Train: Dartington is a 25 mins walk or a short taxi ride from Totnes Railway Station. By Bus: Nearby Totnes is served by the National Express and local services. Dartington is served by the Stagecoach service #165 from the main bus stop in Totnes (outside Morrisons). Info on 0870 6082608 or www.countrybusdevon.co.uk. By Bike: There are bike parks available at Dartington; if you plan to use these please bring your own lock. By Car: We are 30 minutes south of Exeter and north of Plymouth on the M5/A38. From the A38 follow signs to Totnes. On-site parking is available. Pay and Display parking on site is 30p per hour. £1 flat rate from 4pm applies on the main estate. On Foot: A level footpath runs from Totnes station along the river before turning right onto the Dartington Hall drive for the last (hilly) 3/4 mile.

Gardens Dartington’s beautiful Grade II* Listed gardens are open dawn to dusk, throughout the year for all to enjoy. With a rich sense of history and a host of delightful features – from a new bridge by artist Peter Randall Page to a sculpture by Henry Moore to 500 year old Spanish Chestnut trees – the gardens at Dartington are free to explore all year round. Please consider a voluntary donation of £5 per person to help us with the considerable costs of maintaining the gardens. Groups of 10 or more are asked to call 01803 847058 to make arrangements or email gardens@dartington.org. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the gardens except assistance dogs. A picnic area is available in front of the Roundhouse Café and next to the Visitor Centre and refreshments and outside seating are available at the White Hart.
