About Dartington

News in Brief

Dartington is a place of learning and experiment. We act in three broad areas: the arts, the promotion of a fairer society and the future of our planet. Working in partnership with pioneering thinkers, teachers, artists and social entrepreneurs, Dartington addresses some of the significant issues of our time.

DISS

We do this in three ways • by setting up our own initiatives and programmes, building on our skills, resources and heritage • by offering the time, space and stimulation for others to develop and test promising ideas • by inspiring a wide community of artists, thinkers and activists through our work and the exceptional environment we provide Dartington is an independent organisation, trading ethically and sustainably as a social enterprise in order to fund our pioneering work.

Byzantium

Byzantium [15] Director: Neil Jordan Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton UK / USA / Ireland 2013 | 1hr 58m Clara and her daughter, Eleanor, seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort. They meet lonely Noel, who provides shelter in his deserted guesthouse, the Byzantium. But these are not ordinary women; they were born over 200 years ago and survive on human blood. When Clara opens a brothel in the seaside hotel, shocking secrets from the women’s pasts begin to surface, with deathly consequences. This Gothic thriller comes from Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Neil Jordan (The End of the Affair, Interview with the Vampire, The Crying Game). “Seductive, sadistic and elegantly depraved, Byzantium is an unabashedly stylish addition to a timeless genre.” Piers Handling, Toronto International Film Festival 1 - 4 July

Director: Richard Linklater Cast: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy USA 2013 | 1hr 49m Nine years after Before Sunset, Jesse and Celine are spending the summer in Greece with their twin daughters. Almost two decades have passed since their first meeting on that train bound for Vienna. Jesse is struggling to maintain a close bond with his teenage son, Hank, who lives in Chicago with Jesse’s ex-wife. Meanwhile, Celine is faced with a career changing decision that causes her to take stock of her life and her relationship with Jesse. As with Before Sunset, Linklater, Hawke and Delpy share credit for the screenplay.

Stories We Tell

Stories We Tell [12A]

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks [15]

DIRECTOR: Sarah Polley CAST: Pixie Bigelow, Geoffrey Bowes, John Buchan Canada 2013 | Documentary | 1hr 49m In this inspired, genre-twisting new film, Oscarnominated writer/director Sarah Polley explores a family secret. A few years ago she discovered that her biological father was not in fact the man she knows as ‘Dad’. In an effort to fully understand this long-held secret, Polley playfully interviews and interrogates her entire family, eliciting refreshingly candid, yet mostly contradictory, answers to the same questions. As Polley unravels the paradoxes, she reveals a profound, funny and poignant picture of the larger human story.

DIRECTOR: Alex Gibney CAST: Julian Assange, Bradley Manning USA 2013 | Documentary | 2hrs 10m In 2006, the WikiLeaks website was launched, run by Australian internet activist Julian Assange. The site’s mandate involved regularly publishing top-secret documents and covert information, often relating to governments and their respective military operations. This set off a firestorm between those who admired the organisation’s bravado and resourcefulness, and those who argued, not unjustly, that the dissemination of data regarding events such as the U.S. war in Afghanistan could put untold numbers of lives at risk.

When things go wrong, he uses the ensuing police investigation to improvise a brilliant plan B. Compelled by Warner Bros. to film in 3D, Hitchcock perversely refused to use the standard in-your-face gimmickry of most stereoscopic films of the era. DIRECTOR: Joshua Oppenheimer CAST: Haji Anif, Syamsul Arifin, Safit Pardede Denmark/Norway/UK/Sweden/Finland 2012 Subtitles | Documentary | 2hrs 2m When the government of Indonesia was overthrown by the military in 1965, Anwar Congo was one of many small-time gangsters selling cinema tickets on the black market, who found themselves promoted to death squad leaders. DIRECTOR: Stanley Kubrick CAST: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd UK/USA 1980 | 2hr 24m Frustrated writer, Jack Torrance, takes his wife, Wendy, and their psychic son, Danny, to spend an isolated winter in the opulently ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel, where he has taken a job as off-season caretaker. Jack hopes to spend the winter writing but becomes increasingly plagued by strange happenings in the hotel, which has its own disturbing history. Director, Stanley Kubrick, created what many regard as the quintessential horror film of all time. This extended version has an extra 24 minutes.

This Is Spinal Tap [15] DIRECTOR: Rob Reiner CAST: Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner USA 1984 | 1hr 19m Spinal Tap, the world’s loudest band, is chronicled by hack documentarian Marty DiBergi on their American comeback tour. Largely improvised by director Rob Reiner and his cast, this is the ultimate cult film that perfectly parodies the rock ‘n’ roll business. Following an ageing British rock group that has a great line in dead drummers, this hilarious satire contains some of the funniest moments on celluloid, including the amplifier that goes to 11 and the diminutive Stonehenge.

Pacific Rim [Cert. TBC] DIRECTOR: Guillermo del Toro CAST: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day USA 2013 | Running time TBC When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.

Macbeth

Le Nozze di Figaro

Glyndebourne Festival (Recorded)

Sunday 14 July, 7pm Opera | Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Sung in Italian with English surtitles Tickets £17.50 Michael Grandage’s production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro returns. The opera has particular significance, as it was the first ever to be performed at Glyndebourne in 1934, with festival co-founder Audrey Mildmay in the role of Susanna. Captured live in July 2012.

Macbeth - LIVE The Met: Live in HD series is made possible by a generous grant from its founding sponsor.

Thursday 25 July, 6:15pm Opera | by Jean-Philippe Rameau Sung in French with English surtitles Tickets £17.50 When Rameau died in 1764, the Mercure de France concluded its obituary with the words “Here lies the God of Harmony.” In many ways he defined 18th-century French music, publishing his widely influential Treaty on Harmony in 1722. Hippolyte et Aricie was Rameau’s first work for the stage, written when he was nearly 50. It is also Glyndebourne’s first production of an opera by Rameau, and will strike audiences, as it did in Paris in 1733, with its richness of invention.

Springsteen & I [2013]

Monday 22 July, 8:00pm CAST: Bruce Springsteen UK 2013 | Documentary | Running time TBC From the makers of Life in a Day, comes this crowdsourced documentary that celebrates a rock n’ roll icon. Forty years ago, Bruce Springsteen burst onto the rock scene and changed it forever. Working with the filmmakers, his fans have helped create a film that reflects on their personal insights and experiences, to explore what “The Boss” means to them. Combined with never-before-seen footage of Bruce’s performances throughout his career, this is the ultimate collective filmmaking experience.

Don Pasquale - LIVE

Billy Budd

Tuesday 20 August, 7:00pm Opera | Benjamin Britten | Sung in English with English surtitles Tickets £17.50 This year marks the centenary of Benjamin Britten, who was born on 22 November – the feast day of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music. His powerfully dramatic Billy Budd returns to Glyndebourne, with Jacques Imbrailo in the title role and Sir Mark Elder conducting.

Directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, this electrifying new production of Shakespeare’s tragic tale of ambition and treachery unfolds within the walls of an intimate deconsecrated Manchester church.

Tuesday 6 August, 7:15pm Opera | Gaetano Donizetti Sung in Italian with English surtitles. Tickets £17.50 Donizetti was an enormously prolific composer. Don Pasquale is the 64th of his 66 operas, and was written only a year before the onset of the syphilisinduced dementia that was eventually to overwhelm him. Given the circumstances, it is hardly surprising that the diamond-bright wit and brilliance of this opera also has a distinctly dark side. Danielle de Niese, who is acknowledged as one of the world’s most talented and charismatic artists and has been described as “the world’s coolest soprano” by the New York Times, performs the role of Norina.

Saturday 20 July, 8:30pm Encore Performance: Wednesday 24 July, 1:45pm Duration: 2hrs (no interval) Tickets £17.50 National Theatre Live will broadcast Manchester International Festival’s production of Macbeth, with Kenneth Branagh (My Week With Marilyn, Hamlet) in his first Shakespeare performance in over a decade as Macbeth, and Alex Kingston (Doctor Who, ER) as Lady Macbeth.

Presented by The Arts at Dartington In association with Wigmore Hall, London (Artistic Director, John Gilhooly)

14 June – 30 September 2013 Dartington Space and High Cross House - FREE Light Is The Activity Of What Is Transparent is a unique exhibition that presents 21 seminal works by artist Suzanne Redstone across two venues to reveal the trajectory of an artist’s practice over five decades, from 1960s to today. Curated by Isabel Carlisle, former curator at the Royal Academy of Arts, the exhibition takes its name from a quote by Aristotle and spreads through the SPACE galleries to the gardens at High Cross House on the Dartington Hall Estate. “There is nothing more thrilling than uncovering something valuable that has been kept hidden for a long time… The sensibility and experimentation of the Sixties is still strong in her work. Her devotion to seeing light differently and marvelling at its beauty is within the discipline of a practised artist. She works with light and happenstance but with the most graceful touch and, like all really good artists, she makes us want to look.” Isabel Carlisle, Curator www.suzanneredstone.com
