Our most recent annual review ‘A Year Made in Dartington’ is now available. If you’re a Dartington member you’ll receive a copy in the post soon, otherwise pick up a copy next time you’re at Dartington or view it on our website.
Blue Plaques unveiled If you’ve been looking closely you may have noticed some heritage plaques have popped up on buildings around the Dartington estate and beyond commemorating buildings which were part of Dartington Hall School. Alumni from the school recently officially unveiled the plaques with a walk around the sites followed by a well earned drink at the White Hart. A trail map of the plaques and their locations will soon be available for visitors.

Written by Eliza, the songs take inspiration from four areas with links to the Games - Chipping Campden, Much Wenlock, Weymouth and Stoke Mandeville. Talented young musicians from South West Music School will perform the suite on the Weymouth live stage, ahead of the official Games Opening Ceremony. With thanks to Arts Council England and PRS for Music Foundation for financial support.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen [12A]
Introduction
We are delighted to present our May & June programme of films; a wide selection of new & old, light & dark. Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows has Johnny Depp in a vampire tale with a twist, and Glenn Close tackles another intriguing role as the eponymous heroine in Albert Nobbs. Salmon Fishing In The Yemen is an indie rom-com that has got everyone talking, and Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom is a quirky love story of two 12-year old runaways. Marley is a detailed biography of Bob Marley which also examines his religious & philosophical beliefs; surely a must-see for fans of the man and his music. For the child in all of us, Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists is a delightfully silly offering from Aardman Studios that is sure to be a joyful experience for ‘children’ both young and old. With Titanic reissued in 3D and back in cinemas, for me, the hidden gem in this programme is A Night to Remember, by far the best ‘Titanic’ film ever made. Made in 1958, and without the benefit of CGI, this film gets to the places that James Cameron arguably failed to do with his blockbuster 40 years later.
Fri 11 May / 8pm, Sat 12 May / 5pm Sun 13 May / 2pm, Sun 13 - Mon 14 May / 8pm Tue 15 May / 5pm, Wed 16 - Thu 17 May / 2pm & 8pm DIRECTOR Lasse Halstrom CAST Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt Kristen Scott Thomas UK 2011 / 1hr 47m
A visionary sheik who believes his passion for salmon fishing can enrich the lives of his people dreams of bringing the sport to the not so fish-friendly desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn the dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary latches on to it as a ‘good will’ story.
The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists! [U] Fri 4 May / 5pm, Sun 6 May / 2pm Mon 7 May / 2pm & 5pm, Tue 8 - Thu 10 May / 5pm DIRECTOR Peter Lord & Jeff Newitt CAST Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, David Tennant ANIMATION UK / USA 2011 / 1hr 28m

Based on Matthew Lewis’s 1796 gothic novel, The Monk revels in its beguiling atmosphere of long-repressed emotion ultimately unleashed. The period details - costumes, locations and sets - are stunning, as is Cassel’s riveting performance as a man unmoored by sexuality and torn away from all he once held as true.

While Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew has been described as “...a macho fantasy for an alcoholic yob”, one of its distinguishing features is the playwright’s sympathy with and understanding of women characters. This production will focus on the exuberance and vitality of the piece; plenty of stage business, visual humour and dancing.

This is contentious – some say alternatives should all be available so that patients have choice. Others that it encourages vulnerable people to use unproved or disproved treatments. The recent case of the officially cancelled (but still run privately) Totnes Cancer Clinic conference demonstrates the need for an open forum to discuss the contribution of integrated medicine. This debate is run jointly with The Disputables, a Plymouth-based initiative run with the support of Peninsula Arts. Chaired by David Parsley (TotnesFM), panellists include Andy Lewis (Quackometer), Becky Simpson (cancer-survivor through integrated medicine). See website for latest panel update
