About Dartington
News in Brief
Dartington is a place of learning and experiment. We act in three broad areas: the arts, the promotion of a fairer society and the future of our planet. Working in partnership with pioneering thinkers, teachers, artists and social entrepreneurs, Dartington addresses some of the significant issues of our time.
DISS
We do this in three ways • by setting up our own initiatives and programmes, building on our skills, resources and heritage • by offering the time, space and stimulation for others to develop and test promising ideas • by inspiring a wide community of artists, thinkers and activists through our work and the exceptional environment we provide Dartington is an independent organisation, trading ethically and sustainably as a social enterprise in order to fund our pioneering work.
Supporting Dartington International Summer School
Join us in celebrating 60 years at Dartington Hall! The five-week Summer School brings together people of all ages and abilities in a celebration of all genres of music. This year the Summer School will welcome guest tutors and performers, such as Ray Davies and Matthew Rose, as well as hosting a great line-up of workshops for beginners, amateurs and families. Devon residents can take advantage of our Local Offer - you can book individual courses and concerts, or book a full non-residential package. For more info visit www.dartington.org/summer-school or call us on 01803 847080.
Belarus Free Theatre
Belarus Free Theatre is an underground group based in Minsk, speaking out through their creative voices. During March and April, The Arts at Dartington welcomed the company for a month-long residency. Belarus Free Theatre is forced to act as ‘underground’ due to Belarus being run as a dictatorship, where freedom of speech is not allowed. Belarus Free Theatre will be performing the work resulting from their residency at The Dartington Hall Trust on stages around the world. For more information about Belarus Free Theatre and their residency at Dartington please visit www.dartington.org/arts/belarus-free-theatre

Right now the cherry blossom is in bud and is just about to appear in all its glory. After you’ve worked up an appetite you can head to the White Hart for some hearty food or nip to the Roundhouse café for tea and cake! Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) reunites with Matt Damon, who also co-produced and wrote the script with John Krasinkski in this thoughtful and intelligent drama.

Benjamin Britten: Peace and Conflict [PG]
“An intense, slow-burning and haunting drama” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
“A moving and engrossing film, with terrific performances and tender appreciation of Britten’s music.” Paul Kildea, author of Benjamin Britten: A Life in the Twentieth Century
DIRECTOR: Sergei Loznitsa CAST: Vladimir Svirskiy, Vladislav Abashin Germany / Netherlands / Belarus / Russia / Latvia 2012 | Subtitles | 2hrs 8m In 1942, the territory of Belarus is under German occupation, and local partisans are fighting a brutal resistance campaign. A train is derailed not far from the village where Sushenya, a rail worker, lives with his family. Innocent Sushenya is arrested with a group of saboteurs but the German officer decides not to hang him with the others and sets him free. Hearing of his release, the partisans wrongly suspect Sushenya of collaboration with the enemy and lead him into the forest to execute him as a traitor. But all does not go as planned and Sushenya’s ordeal is just beginning.
DIRECTOR: Tony Britten CAST: John Hurt (narrator), Christopher Theobald, Joseph Horovitz UK 2013 | Drama-documentary | 1hr 49m Benjamin Britten is the most performed British composer worldwide and his music becomes more popular year by year. Even his critics accept that he produced a body of work that puts him on a level with Purcell, and the legacy of his many recordings is a testimony to a pianist and conductor with truly extraordinary gifts. Released in celebration of the centenary of the composer’s birth, this film explores the pacifism that was such a powerful influence on the composer’s life and work.

Film Beware of Mr. Baker [Cert. TBC]
DIRECTOR: Jay Bulger CAST: Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton, Femi Kuti, John Lydon USA 2013 | Documentary | 1hr 32m When a documentary begins with its subject using his crutch to deliver a vicious blow to the director’s nose, it’s reasonably safe to expect lessthan-smooth sailing ahead. Ginger Baker, Cream’s legendary scarlet-maned, hell-raising drummer, looks back on his musical career with some of the world’s greatest musicians, as well as his influence on great musical eccentrics like John ‘Jonny Rotten’ Lydon. As impressive as his virtuoso musical talent is, it’s the man himself who proves the most transfixing. A remarkably candid document of an important musical figure, and a searing portrait of a man in freefall doing his best to destroy any human relationship he can as he drums on into personal oblivion. A stunning film. 3 & 4 June MON 3

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt as they venture to a war zone world to find the powerful villain responsible for the devastation. J.J. DIRECTOR: Pedro Almodóvar CAST: Javier Cámara, Pepa Charro, Cecilia Roth Spain 2013 | Subtitles | 1hr 30m A plane full of uptight passengers is stranded in the air after its landing gear jams. The undaunted team of metrosexual flight crew do their best to alleviate the tension and keep everyone happy while they find somewhere safe to attempt a crash landing. Almodóvar’s long awaited return to comedy is a bawdy and beautifully made chamber piece that is a pure delight. Film A Hijacking [15]
DIRECTOR: Tobias Lindholm CAST: Johan Philip Asbæk, Søren Malling, Dar Salim Denmark 2012 | Subtitles | 1hr 41m The Danish freighter MV Rozen is ambushed in the Indian Ocean by Somali pirates, who demand millions in ransom for the return of the ship and its crew. The head of the shipping company, Peter Ludvigsen, immediately hires a professional negotiator, then disregards the expert’s advice and insists on dealing with the pirates himself. As the weeks drag on with no end in sight, it’s clear that the job is much more than Ludvigsen bargained for. Tobias Lindholm (writer of the celebrated Danish TV series Borgen, and co-writer of The Hunt) has created a grittily authentic and suspenseful thriller that’s also a fascinating window into the phenomenon of modern piracy.

DIRECTOR: Werner Herzog CAST: Klaus Kinski, Cecilia Rivera, Ruy Guerra, West Germany 1972 | Subtitles | 1hr 31m In the 16th century, the expedition of Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro searches the impenetrable jungles of Peru for signs of El Dorado, the fabled seven cities of gold. Crazed with greed and mad with power, Aguirre, one of the nobles in command, takes over the enterprise, slaughtering any that oppose him. Based on the real-life journals of a priest, Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, who accompanied Pizarro on his ill-fated mission, this epic historical drama was legendary for the arduousness of its on-location filming and the convincing zealous obsession employed by Kinski in playing the title role.

He and his friends distribute leaflets, contribute articles to leftwing magazines, and spray-paint graffiti slogans on walls. DIRECTOR: Chris Wedge USA 2013 / Animation / Running time TBC From the makers of Ice Age and Rio comes this epic tale of a battle between the forces of good and evil. Teenager, Mary Katherine, has always listened with scepticism to her father’s stories of a tiny but fearless troupe of warriors who live deep in the forest. When she finds herself transported to the hidden forest world of the Leaf Men, she bands together with a rag-tag group of characters to help save their world - and ours.

Thursday 16 May, 7pm Encore Performances: Tuesday 21 May, 2pm Duration: 2hrs 45m approx (with interval) Tickets £17.50 / Encore £12.50 It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. Votes are won and lost by one, fist fights erupt in the bars, and ill MPs are hauled in to cast their votes. James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed new play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves and, on occasion, bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments.
Monday 27 May, 6:45pm MUSIC: Gioachino Rossini Opera in two acts | Sung in Italian Duration: 3hrs 20m approx (with interval) Tickets £17.50 The ultimate bel canto cast is assembled for this important yet rarely performed masterpiece. Based on Sir Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake, La donna del lago is the most fully Romantic of Rossini’s Italian operas. Expansive ensembles and shimmering orchestration generate an opulence seldom heard in the composer’s comic works.
Ariadne auf Naxos
Ariadne auf Naxos - LIVE from Glyndebourne Festival 2013
Tuesday 4 June, 7:00pm MUSIC: Richard Strauss Opera | Sung in German Duration: 2hrs 45m approx (with interval) Tickets £17.50 The 2013 Glyndebourne Festival opens with a new production of this compelling and intricately crafted collaboration between composer Richard Strauss and writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. After the enormous success of Der Rosenkavalier, the two men conceived the idea of a light entertainment, a small trifle to amuse and divert the public.

Thursday 13 June, 7pm Encore Performances: Sunday 16 June, 2pm, Wednesday 19 June, 7pm & Wednesday 26 June, 7pm Duration: TBC Tickets £17.50 / Encore £12.50 Helen Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in the highly-anticipated West End production of The Audience, broadcast as part of National Theatre Live. For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses.

Dartington Community Choir Summer Concert
Schumann drew on texts by Ruckert, Goethe and Zedlitz for these double-choir songs, whereas Brahms’s inspiration was texts from Polydora by Friedrich Daumer. Schuman wrote his four songs, Opus 141, in 1849 and Brahms’s Op 52 was written in 1868. The Schumann pieces have no separate piano accompaniment whereas the Brahms uses piano duet to great effect and therefore we are delighted that our two pianists will also include piano duets in this concert.

– Innovative Conservatoire Conference The Innovative Conservatoire is an international collaboration bringing teachers from music conservatoires together to share and explore practice, reflect, research and innovate. The Innovative Conservatoire uses reflective practice and action research to address the challenges of development at the heart of conservatoire education, and to position creative and performing artists’ practice more centrally within the global knowledge economy.
