> BROADCAST INFORMATION TV: None // Online: ILDN.tv Radio: WFRD 99.3 FM (99Rock) // PBP: Chris Garrett Live Stats: DartmouthSports.com // Twitter: @Dartmouth_MIH THIS WEEKEND The Dartmouth men’s hockey team will open the 2015-16 season with a home-and-home series against Harvard, the defending ECAC Hockey Tournament Champion. The weekend begins Saturday night in Hanover at 7:30 p.m., before the two Ivy foes move to Cambridge for a 7 p.m. contest Sunday night. SEASON OPENERS Since 1997-98, Dartmouth is 8-8-2 in seasonopening games, including a 2-1-2 mark since 2010. In that 18-year stretch, the Big Green and Crimson have squared off in the opener seven times with Harvard winning five. The lone Dartmouth victory came in Cambridge on Oct. 27, 2006 (5-2), while the two played to a 3-3 draw in last season’s first game in the newly renovated Bright-Landry Hockey Center. HOW WE FINISHED 2014-15 The Big Green saw their 2014-15 campaign end in Hamilton, New York, to Colgate in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals in two games. Dartmouth and the Raiders finished tied for fourth in the standings, but Colgate earned the No. 4 seed and the first-round bye via the tiebreaker. The regular season ended with a pair of wins against Princeton and No. 10 Quinnipiac before the Tigers returned to

Hanover the following weekend only to be swept by the fifth-seeded Big Green in the first round of the conference’s postseason. Dartmouth finished the year 17-12-4 overall, 12-8-2 in ECAC Hockey contests and 7-21 against the other Ivies, finishing second to Yale by just one point. SCOUTING HARVARD The Crimson start the season with a plethora of expectations. Picked first by the league’s coaches, the defending postseason tournament champions rolled through the competition last March in Lake Placid and earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Jimmy Vesey returns to the Harvard lineup for his senior season, spurning offers from the Nashville Predators to sign a pro contract following last season’s 32-goal, 58-point season that saw him finish in the top-3 for the Hobey Baker voting. Also back is 48-point scorer Kyle Criscuolo and Alex Kerfoot, a 30-point scorer, to play alongside Vesey. In goal, freshman Michael Lackey played the first 40 minutes of the Crimson’s exhibition against New Brunswick on Saturday night, making 12 saves and allowing just one goal before senior Peter Traber came in for the third period and overtime, stopping eight and allowing two.

LAST SEASON AGAINST THE CRIMSON Dartmouth was 0-1-1 against Harvard last season, playing the Crimson twice at the beginning of the season when they were racing up the national rankings. After the 3-3 tie in Cambridge to start the season, the two played a Tuesday night contest on Nov. 18 in Hanover in which the visitors won 2-0 with Vesey hitting the empty net in the final minute. BACK BEHIND THE BENCH Bob Gaudet ’81 returns for the 19th season as head coach of his alma mater. His 261 wins rank second in program history behind only the legendary Eddie Jeremiah ’28 (301). Last season, Gaudet reached 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 wins overall in his 27th season as a head coach between Hanover and a nine-season run with Brown (1988-97). SENIOR STRONG This year’s roster features 10 seniors. Only Miami (OH) has a roster that has as many players in their final campaigns as the Big Green and Redhawks. That senior class features two goaltenders, five forwards, two defensemen and Brett Patterson who plays both positions.

BETWEEN THE PIPES Seniors James Kruger and Charles Grant, along with sophomore Devin Buffalo, will make up the trio of goalies on the roster this season. Kruger (13-9-4, 1.98 GAA, .926 S%) is coming off the best statistical season by a goalie in the program’s 109-year history, recording the first sub-2.00 goals against average. Grant (4-3-0, 3.18 GAA, 8.76 S%) has proven to be a No. 1 goalie in the past and will battle Kruger for time between the pipes. Buffalo did not see action during his freshman season, but looked sharp in not allowing a goal during his period of play against Prince Edward Island during the preseason scrimmage. WEARING THE ‘C’ Senior Brad Schierhorn will wear the ‘C’ on his sweater as captain this year, becoming the 117th captain in program history. The Anchorage native also is the first Alaskan player ever to be named captain of a Dartmouth hockey team on either the men’s or women’s side. WEARING THE ‘A’ It was announced late this week that senior defenseman Geoff Ferguson will serve as the team’s alternate captain and wear the ‘A’ on his chest. Ferguson —a native of Kanata,

Last season, Ferguson was second on the team in blocked shots with 45, while he led all of ECAC Hockey in blocks as a sophomore in 2013-14. PRESEASON RECAP The preseason began with a last-minute 5-4 exhibition loss to the US National Team Development Program on Oct. 17. The Big Green bounced back with a 7-0 victory this past Saturday in a formal scrimmage with PEI. In that game, six different Dartmouth players registered goals with sophomore Corey Kalk scoring twice. Kalk also had a goal against Team USA the week before. THOMPSON TURNS 40! Thompson Arena is celebrating its 40th anniversary this season after opening its doors for the 1975-76 season. This year’s senior class has helped Dartmouth to a 26-195 home mark during their time in Hanover. The Big Green are just 13-25-2 in home openers since the move from Davis Rink to Thompson Arena. BOUNCING BACK FROM INJURY! After missing most of the second half of last season with a leg injury, senior winger Tim O’Brien is back and healthy for the start of the 2015-16 campaign. The Winnetka, Illinois, native played well in the preseason, finishing a plus-2 with a pair of assists in the win against PEI.

DEPTH AT DEFENSE The Big Green will have six returning defensemen this season. Seniors Geoff Ferguson and Ryan Bullock will be joined by juniors Josh Hartley and Brandon Kirk and sophomores Tim Shoup and River Rymsha. Freshmen Cameron Roth, Karan Toor and Connor Yau will all be making their collegiate debuts this season on the Dartmouth blueline. FILLED AT FORWARD In addition to Schierhorn and O’Brien, Nick Bligh, Jack Barre and Connor Dempsey will make-up the five senior forwards. Juniors Grant Opperman and Troy Crema and sophomores Kevin Neiley, Carl Hesler and Kalk all return looking to earn spots in the forward rotation. Kevan Kilistoff, Alex Jasiek and John Ernsting are the newest members of the forward group and comprise half of the Class of 2019. WHAT’S AHEAD? Following the weekend with the Crimson, Dartmouth will return home for a pair of contests against Brown (Nov. 6) and Yale (Nov. 7). The Green will then head out on the road for sevent straight games and not return to Hanover again until the Ledyard Classic on Jan. 2-3.

PRESEASON POLLS Dartmouth was picked seventh in ECAC Hockey’s preseason media poll, while the conference’s head coaches tabbed the Green and White ninth in their preseason rankings. NATIONAL RANKINGS The Big Green were in and out of the receiving votes section of the national polls during their preseason, earning 18 points in the Oct. 19 poll that followed the team’s 5-4 loss to the

Dartmouth finished the preseason 1-1 with a loss to the USNTDP and a win vs. PEI Dartmouth will need to replace eight graduating seniors that included their top-3 scorers and the league’s top shotblocker Brown, Dartmouth and Harvard all faceoff at 7:30 PM on Saturday, marking the final 3 DI teams to begin their seasons The Big Green will play 3 of their first 4 games at home before a 7-game road trip will carry through until the start of January

HARVARD > NOV. 1, 2015

> 2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW The experts have already mapped out the 2015-16 college hockey season as it relates to ECAC Hockey. And in their expert analysis, this year’s edition of the Dartmouth men’s hockey program is flying under the radar, which is fine by everyone in Hanover. A 10-member senior class is driven to make the best of the quality playing time that is now available following the graduation of eight key members of last season’s team. Only the Redhawks of Miami can match that sizable a senior class this year, giving Dartmouth a veteran presence other ECAC Hockey teams don’t have every time they step on the ice. Those seniors are going to be crucial in providing leadership to the incoming Class of 2019 that features an even split of forwards and defensemen. At the forefront of that class, wearing the captain’s ‘C’ and shouldering the weight of offensive expectations is perhaps the most soft-spoken voice in the locker room, Brad Schierhorn. Playing wing on the top line as a junior, the Anchorage, Alaska, native finished the season second on the team with 10 goals and fourth in scoring with 23 points. Included in that figure were both of Dartmouth’s goals in a 2-0 win over No. 1 Boston University in late November. The Green and White’s goaltending tandem is one that no other conference team can match. Both James Kruger and Charles Grant have held down the starting role for an entire season during their careers and both have had dominant stretches in those periods. Last season, Kruger took the reins in the preseason and went on to boast the best goals against average (1.98) and save percentage (.926) by a Dartmouth goalie in 109 seasons. Grant was outstanding the spring before; the backbone of a Big Green team that was one of the hottest second-half squads in the nation and was only stopped by eventual

national champion Union. Both are back to push one another to be better, to give the team from Hanover a chance to compete with the best on a nightly basis. The forward core boasts the depth and talent to send out any line in any situation with the belief that they can accomplish nearly anything. Junior Grant Opperman and senior Nick Bligh can both agitate you with gritty play and beat you with timely scoring. The return of a healthy Tim O’Brien after missing most of 2014-15 with a leg injury gives the Green even more forward depth from a player who can both grind on the third line as well as score clutch goals usually reserved for the top lines. Brett Patterson is perhaps the most versatile player in all of ECAC Hockey. Sacrificing stats and personal glory to move from forward back to defense when injuries decimated the blueline ranks in the past two seasons. His skating and puck handling abilities have made him invaluable moving through all three zones, quarterbacking a power play or just making the one extra pass that can spring a teammate out of the zone or to the far post. Jack Barre stepped up his game and out of the shadows as a junior. He found ways to contribute offensively in 2014-15 that were not in his repertoire, using his size and strength to tip pucks in front and go hard for rebounds, while at the same time possessing the silky hands to score on a diving backhander in front of a national TV audience at UNH. Sophomores Corey Kalk and Carl Hesler are some of the first players to the rink everyday, always ready to compete and represent this storied program. Expect these second-year forwards to be two of the biggest beneficiaries of the now-available ice time.

On the backend, the Big Green have a solid defensive core, anchored by seniors Geoff Ferguson and Ryan Bullock. Ferguson is not afraid to go into the corners and be the only one to come out. His size makes him an imposing force in his own zone, but don’t be surprised by what he can do with the puck at the other blueline as well. Bullock is a skilled, two-way defenseman, who combines a tenacious defensive ability in his own end with an excellent offensive skillset on the attack. Juniors Josh Hartley and Brandon Kirk are also large, looming figures on skates and can use their size to keep attacking forwards to the outside as well as against the glass. Sophomore Timothy Shoup might be the player who resembles the prototype of what today’s defenseman is supposed to look like: tall, but not huge; strong, but not overly muscular. Just a fast, smart player who is strong on his skates and is looking one step ahead of where he currently is. The Class of 2019 also made an impact during the preseason as John Ernsting, Alex Jasiek, Kevan Kilistoff, Cameron Roth, Karan Toor and Connor Yau all made their debuts against the US National Team Development Program and Prince Edward Island. The Big Green has a proud history in arguably the toughest conference in Division I, finishing in the top-5 of the league in 11 of the last 15 seasons. ECAC Hockey is a great league and has proven a breeding ground for elite programs in the last half decade. All 12 teams have aspirations to hoist the Cleary Cup as league champion at season’s end on the big sheet in Lake Placid. The Big Green are ready for the puck to drop and eager to do their talking on the ice.

BOB GAUDET

> HEAD COACH > DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1981

19th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH 28th YEAR AS HEAD COACH > BIO Entering his 19th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program in 201516, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. Most recently, Gaudet reached 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont. In 2014-15, Gaudet reached both 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 career wins between Hanover and his time at Brown. In 27 seasons as a head coach, including the last 18 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 11 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2015-16 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 261 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 244-24663 (entering 2013-14). The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007, Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him

the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a freeagent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey teamwhile at Hanover High School. Kelly began at Dartmouth in 2013-14.
