CORNELL COMES TO HANOVER TO CHALLENGE BIG GREEN IN IVY SHOWDOWN ▶ SATURDAY’S GAME The Dartmouth women’s lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday against Cornell in an Ivy League match-up that will wrap-up the current three-game homestand. The two rivals will square-off Saturday at Scully-Fahey Field with the opening draw set for noon. ▶ LAST TIME OUT Last Saturday against Brown, the Big Green needed to fight back from a 4-2 halftime deficit to earn a lastsecond victory, 8-7, in Hanover. Sophomore Sarah Byrne scored with 13.6 seconds left in regulation to give the Green the one-goal victory after the Bears controlled much of the game and slowed down the tempo in the final minutes. Dartmouth held Brown without a goal for nearly the final 13:56 of play with Byrne’s goal giving the home team just its second lead of the afternoon. ▶ WHERE WE RANK In the latest Inside Lacrosse deBeer Media Poll, the Big Green currently hold the No. 18 spot in the national rankings. However, for the first time in more than five years, Dartmouth is not ranked in the top-20 of the IWLCA Coaches Poll as it is receiving votes this week. ▶ SCOUTING CORNELL The Big Red got off to a strong start in 2013, winning their first six games of the spring. That start has since given way to a three-game slide to drop the team to 6-3 overall this season and 2-2 in Ivy League contests. The last two losses of the current skid came at the hands of Penn (12-11, OT) and at Princeton (1210) following earlier wins against Harvard and at Columbia. After registering 16 points as a freshman, Lindsay Toppe has emerged as one of the conference’s top offensive threats as a sophomore this season with 31 goals and 40 points. She is complemented by

Caroline Salisbury and Amanda D’Amico, who both have more than 25 points apiece at this point of the season. Courtney Gallagher has started all nine of the team’s games in goal and boasts a 10.79 goals-against average and .383 save percentage. ▶ ALL-TIME VS. THE BIG RED In 35 previous meetings between the two programs, Dartmouth owns a 29-6 advantage, including wins in each of the last six match-ups. The Big Green won both games last season, including a 12-10 regularseason contest in Ithaca and a thrilling 8-7 victory in the Ivy League Tournament Semifinals in Philadelphia.

GAME

▶SCHEDULE ▶FEBRUARY (2-0) 23 @ Oregon 28 NEW HAMPSHIRE

▶ ONE-GOAL GAMES Dartmouth is 5-1 this season in one-goal games after taking out Brown last weekend. The Big Green played just three one-goal contests in 2012 (3-0) and have six combined in the last two years in 33 games, a total they matched this season in a third of the outings (11games).

▶ CARDIAC KIDS Twice this season the Green have broken a tie with the game-winner in the final 20 seconds of regulation. Freshman Jaclyn Leto netted her second career marker with five seconds remaining in the home opener against New Hampshire on Feb. 28 to help her team to an 11-10 win. Leto also assisted on Byrne’s goal as her pass set up the sophomore with the winner with 13.6 seconds left against Brown. ▶ 50 FOR CALBY Sophomore Liz Calby was a game-time decision against the Bears, but was in the starting lineup when they were announced. It was a good thing too as Calby scored twice in the game and pushed her career total to 50. She has 20 goals this season, matching her career high set last spring.

▶ ANOTHER FIVE Senior Courtney Bennett, fresh off of tying a Dartmouth single-game record with nine draw controls against Vermont, picked up another five against the Bears. Her 38 draws in 10 games this season is 11 shy of her total output of 49 in her first three season in Hanover (42 games). ▶ KEEP IT GOING Another two goals for senior Hana Bowers pushed her streak of consecutive games with multiple goals to 13 dating back to last season. The run actually began with two tallies against Cornell in the semifinals of last season’s Ivy League Tournament. ▶ PROTECT THIS HOUSE Dartmouth has not lost at home to Cornell since April 21, 1984. Since that 12-9 defeat almost 30 years ago, the Big Green have gone 12-0 against the Big Red in Hanover. In all, Dartmouth is 13-2 at home in the all-time series with Cornell. ▶ A LOT FROM A LOT Six times this season at least three Big Green players have scored two or more goals in a game. That streak continued last week as Calby, Bowers and Byrne all had two goals in the win over the visiting Bears. Four straight games against UNH, Yale, Boston University and Florida all featured at least three players with multiple goals as have the last two outings against Vermont and Brown.

▶ WHAT’S NEXT? Following Saturday’s game with Cornell, Dartmouth will be on the road for a pair of games in the MidAtlantic Region at Penn and top-ranked Maryland next weekend. The return to Philadelphia after last year’s Ivy League Tournament win over the Quakers will feature two teams currently atop the league standings (3-0) in a Friday evening contest. The Big Green will then head down to College Park for a contest with No. 1 Maryland Sunday afternoon. ▶ SIX FOR 103 Kelsey Johnson tied her career high for ground balls in a game when she picked up six against Vermont. However, those six ground balls pushed her over the century mark as she entered the contest with 97 in her three and a half seasons with the team. She now has 103 in 58 career games played to average nearly two per outing. ▶ CAREER NUMBERS Although just nine games into her collegiate career, it was hard to overlook the numbers posted by freshman Jaclyn Leto against UVM. Leto set or tied her career highs in points (4), goals (2), assists (2), ground balls (3), draw controls (4) and caused turnovers (2) vs. the Catamounts. ▶ TWO AND FOUR Junior Liz Calby matched her career high of six points vs.Vermont, scoring twice and assisting on four others for her second six-point game of the season (UNH, Feb. 28). Her three ground balls in the game were also

▶ CORNELL • APRIL 6, 2013 ▶HEAD COACH AMY PATTON The 2013 season marks the 21st for head coach Amy Patton at Dartmouth, having led the Big Green to unprecedented success both within the Ivy League and on the national scale. With 209 career wins, 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, nine Ivy League championships and four NCAA Final Fours to her credit, Patton is one of the nation’s elite coaches. Beyond Hanover, Patton is an active part of U.S. Lacrosse, having recently served as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Developmental team. Dartmouth has been a model of consistency under Patton, ranked in the IWLCA top-20 during every single season that she has coached and has ranked in the top-10 nationally in 18 of those, including in both 2010, 2011 and 2012. As a program, Dartmouth is one of just five teams to be ranked during every single season since the IWLCA began weekly polls in 1988. In 20 years as Dartmouth’s head coach, Patton owns a 221-103 overall record, 105-30 in Ivy League play, winning nearly 78 percent of Dartmouth’s conference games. Since her arrival in Hanover in 1993, the Big Green has reached double figures in wins 16 times and advanced past the NCAA first round seven times. Patton’s teams are no strangers to perfection, five times winning the Ivy League unbeaten, most recently in 2005. From 1997-2001, Dartmouth won 22 consecutive Ancient Eight contests, en route to threestraight 7-0 championship seasons. Dartmouth’s defense has ranked in the top-10 nationally in scoring defense seven times since 2002, including leading the nation in that category in 2006. In 2012, Patton and the Big Green finally won the Ivy League Tournament Championship, taking down top-seeded Penn, 6-4, in the title game. The Green

held the Quakers without a goal for 44 minutes to complete the comeback win two days after knocking off Cornell in a thrilling 9-8 game. In winning the crown, Dartmouth would advance to its 13th NCAA Tournament and the 12th since Patton took control of the program. Patton’s 19th season at the helm (2011) was a special one in which Dartmouth won its 11th Ivy League Championship and made its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance. Ranked as high as 10th nationally during the season, it marked a true return to glory for the Big Green, which had not won an Ivy title since 2005 and had not been to the postseason since 2006. Dartmouth also knocked off previously unbeaten No. 1 Maryland on May 1, snapping the Terps’ 28-game winning-streak and becoming the first team other than North Carolina to beat Maryland since 2008. Patton’s efforts have not gone unrewarded on a personal level. She was named the IWLCA National Coach of the Year in 1998, was one of three finalists for that honor in 1993 — her first season at the helm — and has been the Northeast Region’s Coach of the Year three times (1994, 1995, 1998). One of the most recognized names in college women’s lacrosse, Patton is a prominent member of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). She was vice president of the IWLCA for two years. Most recently, Patton headed the Brine All-America selection committee and has served on the Tewaaraton Trophy selection committee. Patton was a U.S. Squad selector in 1993, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007 and 2008. She was also a member of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Committee and assistant coach for the U.S. National Developmental team in 1998-2000. Patton served as head coach of the developmental squad from 2006-09. Prior to her appointment as head coach at Dartmouth, Patton served as an assistant to former coach and athletics director Josie Harper from 1991-92. Patton served as an assistant for the University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team during the 1990 season. Patton is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland where she earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. As an athlete, Patton was a four-year letterwinner in both lacrosse and field hockey, earning All-America and All-ACC accolades. She was a member of Maryland’s 1986 NCAA national championship lacrosse team and earned the Terps’ scholar-athlete award.
