DARTMOUTH HEADS TO PENN AND MARYLAND FOR WEEKEND SHOWDOWNS ▶THIS WEEKEND The Dartmouth women’s lacrosse team will be on the road this weekend for a pair of tough contests at Penn and Maryland. The trip begins with a 5 p.m. match-up against the Quakers Friday before traveling down I-95 for a Sunday meeting with the nation’s top team in the Terrapins at noon. ▶ LAST TIME OUT The Big Green continued its strong play against Ivy League opponents with a 9-5 win over Cornell last Saturday at Scully-Fahey Field in Hanover. Dartmouth got four goals from Hana Bowers and 10 saves from goalkeeper Kristen Giovanniello as it knocked off the Big Red for the seventh straight time and the 13th consecutive home game dating back to 1984. ▶ EARNING AWARDS For their solid outings against Cornell, both Bowers and Giovanniello received weekly accolades form the Ivy League office. Bowers was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week, her second such recognition of 2013. Giovanniello was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season and the fifth time in her career. The Big Green’s goalkeeper was also named the DartmouthSports.com Northeast Credit Union Female Athlete of the Week for her strong play against the Big Red. ▶ SCOUTING PENN The Quakers come into the weekend as one of three teams tied atop the Ivy League standings at 4-0 in conference games this season along with Dartmouth and Princeton. Friday evening’s game will be played at Dunning-Cohen Champions Field at Penn Park rather than Franklin Field and will serve as the home team’s
Senior Day. Meredith Cain leads the team in scoring with 26 points and assists with nine, while her 17 goals rank second. Sophomore goalkeeper Lucy Ferguson has been solid this season as she leads the Ancient Eight in save percentage (.468) while second in goalsagainst average (9.01).

▶ LAST TIME AGAINST PENN Dartmouth was the lone Ivy team to knock off Penn last season as it did so, 9-7, during the regularseason meeting in Hanover. The Big Green then took down the Quakers in come-from-behind fashion, 6-4, in the Ivy League Tournament Championship Game in Philadelphia in early May as well. Penn held a 3-0 lead midway through the first half and a 3-1 advantage at intermission, but six unanswered goals from Dartmouth were too much for the home team to overcome as the Green captured their first postseason title in program history. ▶ SCOUTING MARYLAND The Terrapins are one of just two undefeated teams remaining in the nation this season (Notre Dame) and sit atop both national polls as the unanimous No. 1 selection in the country right now. A 15-9 win over Princeton on Wednesday evening pushed Maryland’s record to 15-0 this season, while the Terps also boast a 4-0 mark in ACC play against some of the toughest competition in college lacrosse. Senior Alex Aust is putting together a stellar final season in College Park as she currently ranks second in the nation with 89 points on 47 goals and 42 assists. Kasey Howard is the goalkeeper of record in each contest this year and has a .433 save percentage to go along with an 8.53 goals-against average.

▶ LAST TIME AGAINST THE TERPS Maryland came to Hanover for the 2011 regular season finale ranked No. 1 in the nation, only to fall to the Green that afternoon, 9-8, in overtime thanks to Sarah Park’s game-winner with eight seconds left in the extra frame. Losing to Dartmouth that afternoon, the Terps saw their 28-game winning streak halted as they were defeated for the first time since the 2009 NCAA Tournament National Semifinals. ▶ SHE WAS ONCE A TURTLE Now in her 21st season as the Dartmouth head coach, Amy Patton is a 1988 University of Maryland graduate and was a 1985 All-America selection as a member of the Terps. ▶ APPROACHING NUMBERS With just three more points, senior Courtney Bennett will reach 50 for her career. As it stands now, Bennett has 34 goals and 13 assists for 47 career points. She is also 13 draw controls shy of 100 as her 38 this season give her 87 for her career. ▶ BUILDING YEAR After scoring just once as a freshman in 2012, nowsophomore Sarah Byrne has 12 goals this season after finding the back of the net twice against Cornell. Her 10th goal of the spring came two weeks ago against Brown with just 13 seconds left and gave Dartmouth the 8-7 win.

▶ PLAY THE BEST TO BE THE BEST Sunday’s game at Maryland will mark the third contest against a top-10 team this season for the Green and White. Earlier meetings with No. 2 Florida and No. 6 Duke have also helped the Big Green put together one of the more challenging non-conference schedules in the country this spring. ▶ WHERE WE RANK Dartmouth is still receiving votes in the IWLCA Coaches’ Poll, sitting just outside the top-20. In the Inside Lacrosse deBeer Media Poll, the win over Cornell jumped the Big Green four spots from No. 18 last week to the No. 14 position this week. ▶ WHAT’S NEXT? After this weekend’s road contests against two of this season’s more challenging opponents, there will be little time to rest as Princeton comes to Hanover next Saturday (April 20). The Tigers are the third team tied with Penn and Dartmouth with an unbeaten Ivy League record this season (4-0). ▶ TWO AND FOUR Junior Liz Calby matched her career high of six points vs.Vermont, scoring twice and assisting on four others for her second six-point game of the season (UNH, Feb. 28). Her three ground balls in the game were also a new career high for the Darien, Conn., native.

PENN/MARYLAND • APRIL 12/14, 2013 ▶HEAD COACH AMY PATTON The 2013 season marks the 21st for head coach Amy Patton at Dartmouth, having led the Big Green to unprecedented success both within the Ivy League and on the national scale. With 209 career wins, 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, nine Ivy League championships and four NCAA Final Fours to her credit, Patton is one of the nation’s elite coaches. Beyond Hanover, Patton is an active part of U.S. Lacrosse, having recently served as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Developmental team.
Dartmouth has been a model of consistency under Patton, ranked in the IWLCA top-20 during every single season that she has coached and has ranked in the top-10 nationally in 18 of those, including in both 2010, 2011 and 2012. As a program, Dartmouth is one of just five teams to be ranked during every single season since the IWLCA began weekly polls in 1988. In 20 years as Dartmouth’s head coach, Patton owns a 221-103 overall record, 105-30 in Ivy League play, winning nearly 78 percent of Dartmouth’s conference games. Since her arrival in Hanover in 1993, the Big Green has reached double figures in wins 16 times and advanced past the NCAA first round seven times. Patton’s teams are no strangers to perfection, five times winning the Ivy League unbeaten, most recently in 2005. From 1997-2001, Dartmouth won 22 consecutive Ancient Eight contests, en route to threestraight 7-0 championship seasons. Dartmouth’s defense has ranked in the top-10 nationally in scoring defense seven times since 2002, including leading the nation in that category in 2006. In 2012, Patton and the Big Green finally won the Ivy League Tournament Championship, taking down top-seeded Penn, 6-4, in the title game. The Green
held the Quakers without a goal for 44 minutes to complete the comeback win two days after knocking off Cornell in a thrilling 9-8 game. In winning the crown, Dartmouth would advance to its 13th NCAA Tournament and the 12th since Patton took control of the program. Patton’s 19th season at the helm (2011) was a special one in which Dartmouth won its 11th Ivy League Championship and made its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance. Ranked as high as 10th nationally during the season, it marked a true return to glory for the Big Green, which had not won an Ivy title since 2005 and had not been to the postseason since 2006. Dartmouth also knocked off previously unbeaten No. 1 Maryland on May 1, snapping the Terps’ 28-game winning-streak and becoming the first team other than North Carolina to beat Maryland since 2008. Patton’s efforts have not gone unrewarded on a personal level. She was named the IWLCA National Coach of the Year in 1998, was one of three finalists for that honor in 1993 — her first season at the helm — and has been the Northeast Region’s Coach of the Year three times (1994, 1995, 1998). One of the most recognized names in college women’s lacrosse, Patton is a prominent member of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). She was vice president of the IWLCA for two years. Most recently, Patton headed the Brine All-America selection committee and has served on the Tewaaraton Trophy selection committee. Patton was a U.S. Squad selector in 1993, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007 and 2008. She was also a member of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Committee and assistant coach for the U.S. National Developmental team in 1998-2000. Patton served as head coach of the developmental squad from 2006-09. Prior to her appointment as head coach at Dartmouth, Patton served as an assistant to former coach and athletics director Josie Harper from 1991-92. Patton served as an assistant for the University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team during the 1990 season. Patton is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland where she earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. As an athlete, Patton was a four-year letterwinner in both lacrosse and field hockey, earning All-America and All-ACC accolades. She was a member of Maryland’s 1986 NCAA national championship lacrosse team and earned the Terps’ scholar-athlete award.
