GAMEES NOT
LAST TIME OUT The Big Green travelled to Durham to play at UNH for the first time in 15 years on Friday night in a game broadcast on the NBC Sports Network. Leading by two and controlling play more than halfway through the third period, it looked as if Dartmouth would get its first win on New Hampshire’s ice in 23 years, but a pair of late third-period goals from Grayson Downing helped the Wildcats earn the 2-2 tie. The Green and White got goals from Brad Schierhorn in the first and Jack Barre in the third, while James Kruger stopped 18 shots. SCOUTING VERMONT Like Dartmouth, the Catamounts brought in the second half of 2014-15 with a home tournament, taking on Air Force and Providence in the Catamount Cup on Dec. 28-29. A 4-2 win against the Falcons was followed by a 3-0 loss at the hands of Hockey East rival Providence in the second game of the weekend. Vermont rang in the New Year against ECAC Hockey foe Yale on Saturday, Jan. 3 in New Haven, suffering a 3-1 defeat to the Bulldogs in Ingalls Rink, pushing the team’s record to 14-5-1 overall. In the most recent USCHO.com national poll (Jan. 5), UVM dropped two spots to No. 12. Sophomore Mario
Puskarich leads the team with nine goals and shares the scoring lead with senior Mike Paliotta as both have 18 points. Paliotta’s 13 assists are good for the team lead through 20 games played. The netminding tandem of junior Brody Hoffman (10-2-1/1.98 GAA/.918 Save%) and sophomore Mike Santaguida (4-3-0/1.26/.955 Save%) has been one of the best in the nation this season as Vermont ranks third in team defense, allowing opponents just 1.70 goals per game.
BIG GREEN
DECEMBER (2-1-0, 1-1-0) 5 Fri. at No. 15 Quinnipiac* L, 2-1 (OT) 6 Sat. at Princeton*^ W, 4-2 14 Sun. SACRED HEART W, 8-3
LAST TIME AGAINST VERMONT These two teams played to a 1-1 tie at Gutterson Field House in Burlington on Jan. 3, 2014. Grant Opperman scored his third of the season to break the scoreless tie late in the second period for the only Dartmouth goal of the game. Charles Grant turned aside 33 shots to earn the tie, his second of the 2013-14 campaign. FIVE’S A CROWD The goals from juniors Schierhorn and Barre were both the fifth goals of the season for each player. They moved into a share of the team lead in goals with seniors Tyler Sikura and Eric Neiley.
IN BUNCHES For Barre, the junior from Fairfield, Connecticut, the third-period backhand goal was the fourth in as many games dating back to the Dec. 14 contest against Sacred Heart where he had a career-high two markers. He was held off the scoresheet vs. Denver, but now has goals against Boston College and UNH in the last two outings.

MAC ATTACK IS BACK After being scratched in the last six games and eight of the last nine, senior Brandon McNally returned to the lineup against the Wildcats on Friday. The Saugus, Massachusetts native, played alongside Eric Neiley and Brett Patterson in his return, finishing the night with one shot on goal and even in terms of plus/minus.
SCORELESS IN THE SECOND? Coming into the game with UNH, Dartmouth was clicking in the second period with 16 goals all season and seven in its last three games. However, the Wildcats held the Green off the scoreboard in the middle frame, while the visitors did manage to outshoot the home team, 13-8, in the stanza.
OLD MEN The Big Green got another two goals from their upperclassmen Friday, giving the junior and senior classes 34 of 38 total goals this season (89.5%). A pair of goals each from Corey Kalk and Grant Opperman are the only four goals from the freshman and sophomore classes in 2014-15. Of the 108 total points this year for the Green, 88 have come from the top two classes, accounting for 81.5% of total production.
GRANT AGAINST THE CATAMOUNTS James Kruger has never played against Vermont in his career, while Charles Grant has been the starter against the Catamounts in each of the last two seasons. He stopped 33 shots in a 1-1 tie in Burlington last season and 30 in a 4-2 win at Thompson on Dec. 5, 2012 in a game also broadcast on the NBC Sports Network.
GOTTA FIND THAT KILLER INSTINCT In the last three games Dartmouth has entered the third period with a one-goal lead and in each have not been able to come away with a win. Against Denver and leading 1-0, the Pioneers tied it up and forced an eventual 1-1 tie. BC was down 2-1, but managed a pair of third-period goals to take the Ledyard Classic title with a 3-2 win. And Friday, UNH’s Downing netted two in the final minutes to help the Wildcats earn the 2-2 draw.

WHERE THERE IS ONE THERE IS USUALLY A SECOND Carl Hesler picked up the secondary helper on Barre’s goal and Eric Robinson had one on Schierhorn’s goals. That is important because of Dartmouth’s 38 goals in 14 games this season, 32 have come with a pair of assists (84.2%). That gives Dartmouth an average of 2.29 secondary assists per game, the 18th-best figure in the nation this year. The team has yet to register an unassisted goal this season.

GAME 15 // VERMONT // JAN. 11, 2015 // GAME NOTES // (Jan. 16-17). Both games will be carried live in HD on the Ivy League Digital Network. Tickets can be purchased on DartmouthSports.com or by calling 603-626-2466. ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM For his play in the Ledyard Classic, Kruger was tabbed to the all-tournament team as the top netminder in the two-day showcase. Joining Kruger on the all-tournament team from Dartmouth was classmate Brett Patterson who had a goal and an assist on the weekend and was arguably the team’s best forward in the twogame stretch. Brown’s Sam Lafferty, as well as Trevor Moore and Danton Heinen from Denver and BC’s Adam Gilmour also earned all-tourney honors, while Eagles forward Teddy Doherty was named the Most Valuable Player for scoring the game winner late against the Big Green. IN THE LINEUP, ON THE SCORESHEET After playing in only three games in the first half, Kyle Nickerson made an immediate impact upon his return to the lineup this past weekend at the Ledyard. Playing wing on a line with Neiley and Patterson, Nickerson had assists against both the Pioneers and Eagles, giving him points in consecutive games for the first time in his career. ANYONE BUT No. 15… Dartmouth is 2-2-1 this season against teams ranked in the top-20 nationally by USCHO at the time of the game. The only two defeats in those five contests have come to teams ranked No. 15 and both times by just a goal. Dartmouth dropped a 2-1 OT game in Hamden to then-No. 15 Quinnipiac on Dec. 5 and a 3-2 decision this past weekend to No. 15 Boston College. The Big Green are a perfect 2-0-0 against teams in the top-10, defeating No. 8 Union, 4-3, in overtime and shutting out No. 1 Boston University, 2-0, with both games coming in November. They also
have the 1-1 tie with No. 11 Denver, while taking the five-round shootout, 2-1. INJURIES ECAC Hockey’s team most affected by injuries in 2013-14 was Dartmouth with 120 man-games lost to injury in a 34-game schedule. That has not been the case to this point this season as the Big Green have only been hit with 25 man-game lost to injury. Of that figure, 11 belong to sophomore Troy Crema who missed the first half of the season with an ankle ailment. The remaining 14 games were spread out over five players with Charles Grant’s six games the only number close to Crema’s figure. ONLY ONE AWAY FROM HOME This weekend marks the final two non-conference games of the season. Of the seven non-ECAC Hockey games this season that the Big Green are allowed to play by the Ivy League, six are in Thompson Arena. The only exception to that is Friday’s game against UNH of Hockey East in Durham. MASCOTS DON’T MATTER… The Big Green are 4-3-1 this season against teams with animal nicknames, including 1-1-1 vs. teams with cat-themed names (Quinnipiac Bobcats, Princeton Tigers, UNH Wildcats). They are 2-1-1 against people/professions (Union Dutchmen, RPI Engineers, Sacred Heart Pioneers and Denver Pioneers) and 0-1-1 against colors (Harvard Crimson).
@DARTMOUTH_MIH IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS... Dartmouth allowed 2 late goals at UNH on Friday to earn a 2-2 tie with the Wildcats.
Sunday is the final non-conference game of the season for the Big Green.
Jack Barre and Brad Schierhorn moved into a share of the team lead for goals with Tyler Sikura and Eric Neiley as all have 5. Sunday’s game marks the 80th alltime meeting between Dartmouth and Vermont.

BOB GAUDET ’81
GAME 15 // VERMONT // JAN. 11, 2015
//KOENIG FAMILY HEAD COACH OF MEN’S HOCKEY
//18th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH //27th YEAR AS HEAD COACH // BIO //
Entering his 18th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program in 201415, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. Most recently, Gaudet reached 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont. In 26 seasons as a head coach, including the last 17 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 10 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2014-15 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 244 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 244-24663 (entering 2013-14). The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007, Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the
DARTMOUTHSPORTS.COM
Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a freeagent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey teamwhile at Hanover High School. Kelly began at Dartmouth in 2013-14.
