DARTMOUTH LOOKS TO REBOUND AGAINST VISITING HARVARD ▶ THIS WEEKEND Dartmouth will return to the ice Saturday evening for a 7:30 p.m. meeting with Harvard at Thompson Arena. The Big Green are currently on a three-game slide after one-goal losses at Quinnipiac and Princeton last weekend. ▶ LAST TIME OUT The Green took an early lead, but eventually fell to Princeton, 2-1, last Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Despite dominating play and heavily outshooting the Tigers, 35-16, the visitors fell thanks in large part to two earlysecond period goals surrendered in the first three minutes. ▶ BATTLE BACK Falling behind by two in the final minutes of its game at No. 5 Quinnipiac the night before did little to diminish the fight in Dartmouth’s game. Goals from Winnetka, Ill., natives Matt Lindblad and Tim O’Brien late in regulation helped the Big Green tie the game and force OT. ▶ RANKINGS The current three-game slide has Dartmouth ranked 12th in the latest USCHO.com Poll after earning a No. 8 ranking and a first-place vote the previous release. The eighth-place position and first-place nod were firsts for the program under the current polling system. In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, the Green are also 12th after spending a week at No. 8. ▶ VOTE FOR HOBEY This week saw fan voting open up for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to college hockey’s best player. Dartmouth has two nominees on this season’s fan ballot as both Matt Lindblad and Tyler Sikura make their first appearances.
▶ SCOUTING HARVARD - It had been more than a month since the Crimson scored more than twice in a game, last accomplishing the feat Nov. 16 in a 4-1 win at Cornell. That streak ended along with a sixgame winless stretch (0-5-1) with a third-period comeback and overtime victory Wednesday night at No. 8 Boston University. Trailing 5-2 in the third period, Harvard scored three to force OT before Connor Morrison netted the winner with 48 seconds left in the extra frame to complete the come-from-behind win. - Comeback wins aside, the Crimson have struggled this season to meet lofty preseason expectations and are 5-7-1 overall, while ninth in the league standings at 3-5-0 and six points. Back in the Crimson lineup will be freshman Jimmy Vessey fresh off a Gold Medal with Team USA at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship in Russia. - Senior Alex Fallstrom and sophomore Tommy O’Regan share the team lead in scoring with 10 points each, while Vessey’s five goals are the most by any player this year. Raphael Girard has played the majority of time in goal, posting a 5-71 mark to go along with a .906 save percentage and a 3.19 goals-against average.

However, the Big Green have just one loss to their Ivy League foe in the last seven meetings (4-1-2). ▶ HOME SWEET HOME For sophomore Eric Neiley, playing at Princeton is a homecoming of sorts. Just 45 minutes from his hometown of Warminster, Pa., Neiley has been stellar in two career games at Hobey Baker Rink, scoring three times. His third of the season got the Big Green off to a 1-0 lead 6:05 into Saturday afternoon’s game. In his lone appearance at Princeton as a freshman in 201112, Neiley scored twice in a 3-3 tie with the Tigers. ▶ SUDDEN STRUGGLES After allowing just one power-play goal in the first 12 games of the year, Dartmouth has surrendered three in the last three outings. While holding high-powered Quinnipiac without a man-advantage goal, both Princeton and UMass scored key markers with the Big Green down a player in one-goal wins. However, the PK unit has not fallen far, dropping from first to second in the nation in that time with a stillimpressive 93.0% success rate (53-57). ▶ SIKURA’S STREAK Sophomore Tyler Sikura has matched his seasonbest scoring streak of seven games with assists against the Bobcats and Tigers last weekend. In just 15 games, the second-year forward has a team-best 21 points and two separate runs of seven straight contests with points. He opened the year on a similar streak before a pointless night at No. 10 Cornell before starting his current stretch. He has amassed nine points in the current run (3g/6a). ▶ LINDBLAD JOINS IN Matt Lindblad also has a seven-game point streak going after a goal and an assist on the road last weekend. Since missing that Nov. 17
game in Ithaca, the junior winger has registered a point in each match-up. His scoring run of seven games includes 11 points on three goals and eight assists. ▶ UNNOTICED Lost in the shuffle surrounding Dartmouth’s 4-1 win over then-No. 2 New Hampshire on Dec. 30 was that five of the six defensemen dressed that night for the Big Green registered points. Four players had assists and Ryan Bullock picked up his first career goal and point in the win. The lone d-man not to appear on the scoresheet was captain Mike Keenan, the player that leads all Dartmouth defenders in scoring this season with eight points (2g/6a). ▶ UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY FOR LOVEJOY Coming into the weekend, Dartmouth had yet to lose a game when Nick Lovejoy was dressed and in the lineup (5-0-2). However that ended with road defeats this past weekend. Originally not in the lineup at Princeton, an injury to Andy Simpson in warmups thrust the junior into the rotation after quickly getting dressed during ice resurfacing. ▶ BAD BACK-TO-BACK The losses to UMass and Quinnipiac were the first consecutive defeats of the season, a figured that reached three with another at Princeton on Sunday. The two most recent losses were also the first back-to-back defeats by a single goalie this season as well as freshman Charles Grant was in net for both.

▶ vs HARVARD • JAN. 12, 2013 ▶ TAKEN FOR GRANT-ED Grant may have been charged with the loss at Quinnipiac, but the first-year netminder’s play did nothing to warrant criticism. For the third time this season, Grant was tasked with making more than 30 saves in a game, turning aside 32 in the 63:28 of action in Hamden. ▶ COMPARE AND CONTRAST It wasn’t until Jan. 21 last season that the Green and White reached the eight-win mark, a comeback victory at Colgate in their 18th contest of the season. This year, the team reached that same figure on Dec. 30 in just its 12th match-up. ▶ ODD TIMING Saturday’s game will start at 7:30 p.m. rather than the normal 7 p.m. start time due to the women’s hockey game against Princeton scheduled for a 4 p.m. puck drop at Thompson Arena. ▶ LIVE FREE AND WIN Dartmouth is 7-1-0 at home this season. Outside of the borders of New Hampshire, the Big Green are just 1-4-1 with the lone win coming against Brown in the Ivy Shootout on Oct. 27 in Providence. ▶ ROAD SWEEP The two losses on the road marked the first road sweep of the Green in nearly two years. The last time the team lost two road games in a single weekend came on Feb. 18-19, 2011 at Colgate (5-3) and Cornell (3-2, OT).
▶ WHAT’S AHEAD? The Big Green will head back on the road next weekend for tilts at Brown on Friday and Yale on Saturday. Dartmouth is 1-0-1 this season at Meehan Auditorium after winning the 2012 Ivy League Shootout in October. The Big Green knocked off the Bulldogs in a shootout after playing to a 2-2 tie, before taking down the Bears, 4-0, in the championship game. ▶ TOURNAMENT TEAM TALENT Sophomore Tyler Sikura and senior co-captain Mike Keenan were named to the 2012 Ledyard Classic All-Tournament Team for their two-game performances. Keenan was as solid a defender as there was on the ice all weekend and Sikura scored once and assisted on another in the games against the Wildcats and Minutemen.

▶ GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK For the second time this season and the third time in his career, junior Cab Morris was tabbed as the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week. The accolade came thanks in large part to his career-best 31 saves Sunday night in the 4-1 win over the Green’s Granite State rival. Overall, Morris finished the weekend with 57 stops. ▶ HECK OF A TIME FOR HIS FIRST One of the most highly-touted incoming players in college hockey this season, Nick Bligh had gone his first seven games without a goal. That unwanted streak ended just 6:05 into Sunday night’s game as his shot from the high slot beat UNH’s Casey DeSmith for the game’s first goal and the first in Bligh’s Dartmouth career.

▶ vs HARVARD • JAN. 12, 2013 ▶GAUDET’S CAREER
Head Coach
BOB GAUDET ’81 Now in his 16th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last two seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 15 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2012-13 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 219 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .507 winning percentage (219-212-54) is the third-best mark at Dartmouth as well. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-132 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 219-212-54 (Entering this year). The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth
its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year Award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. In the summer of 1990, Gaudet served as the assistant coach of the East Team in the Olympic Sports Festival, held in Minneapolis. In 1994, he served again as head coach of the East Team, and also coached the East All-Star Team in the EastWest Shrine College Hockey Classic. Gaudet spent the summer of 1998 behind the bench of the New England Select 16-Team at USA Hockey’s Summer Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Kelly is a senior at Hanover High School in 2012-13 where she is the starting goalie and co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team.

▶ HECK OF A TIME FOR HIS FIRST AS WELL Following Bligh’s first career marker, freshman defender Ryan Bullock also notched the first in a Big Green sweater with a redirected shot from the point. For Bullock, it was not only his first tally, but also his first collegiate point. ▶ SOME CALLS WERE MADE Against UMass, a combined 87 penalty minutes were handed out by the officiating crew on 23 calls. Dartmouth was whistled for 13 of those penalties, totaling 40 PIMs. Entering the game, the Green ranked as the least penalized team in the nation at 8.2 per game and had only once had as many as 12 minutes and six calls go against them in a single outing. ▶ PATTERSON’S SHORTY Brett Patterson finally got back on the scoresheet with an assist on Bullock’s goal Sunday, but his shorthanded goal the following night against UMass was his first tally since Oct. 27 at Brown in the Ivy Shootout. Sikura had registered the team’s only two other shorthanded markers this year prior to Patterson’s. ▶ ECAC HOCKEY FROM HERE ON OUT The rest of the schedule is nothing but league games for the Big Green who will not play the annual Battle for the Riverstone in Manchester since UNH came to the Ledyard Classic. The remaining 14 regular season games and ECAC Hockey Tournament will all be versus conference foes. ▶ TERRIFIC AT THOMPSON The loss to UMass was the first blemish on the Green’s home schedule so far this season. Entering the game, Dartmouth had been 7-0-0 in games played on their own home ice, including two wins over teams ranked in the top-10 (No. 8 Union and No. 2 New Hampshire). ▶ WHAT A CROWD! Officially, the announced attendance inside Thompson Arena on Dec. 30 was a sellout of 4,500 people. That figure ranks at the ninthhighest single-game figure in the building’s 37year history. The highest figure since Thompson opened its doors in the fall of 1975 was 5,048 against Brown on Feb. 14, 1981 when maximum capacity was higher due to previous fire code regulations. ▶ LEDYARD FACTS The 2012 Ledyard Classic was be the 24th for Dartmouth since it began in 1978 (then known as the Auld Lang Syne Tournament). New Hampshire is now 12-7 and has claimed the title four times, the last coming in 1986. UMass won it all this year and is 3-1 in two appearences (2012, 2008). Bemidji knocked off the Minutemen only to lose to Dartmouth, 4-2, in that 2008 title contest, (the Green’s last tournament win), but dropped a 4-2 game to UMass and an OT thriller to UNH on Monday night.

▶ WALSH STEPS UP Walsh’s two-goal performance against UVM on Dec. 5 was just the second multi-goal game of his career. The senior from Shannonville, Ontario, previously scored twice in a come-from-behind win against Princeton at home on Nov. 5, 2011. ▶ 30 FOR CHUCK Freshman goaltender Charles Grant turned aside 30 Vermont shots in the 4-2 non-conference win, his third of the season (3-1-1). It was just the second time this season that a Dartmouth goalie needed to make 30 or more saves in a game. Grant had the other, stopping 35 in a 7-4 win against Yale on Nov. 2. Morris registered his first 30-plus save performance of the year with 31 against the Wildcats. Grant then stopped 32 against the Bobcats. ▶ KEENAN CONTINUES CAPTAINING Mike Keenan scored his second goal of the season just 2:33 into the Vermont game to give his team the 1-0 lead. He later assisted on Sikura’s insurance marker early in the final frame for another two-point night. He had registered two assists against Bentley just four days before.
▶ BATTLE OF THE SPECIAL TEAMS In the Dec. 1 outing, Bentley came to Hanover boasting the nation’s best power play at 32.6%, but was dominated by the penalty killers from Dartmouth. The Big Green’s PK unit was a perfect 6-for-6 on the night, killing off two in each period. ▶ 225 FOR SECOND The win over Bentley was the 225th for head coach Bob Gaudet at Dartmouth since taking over at his alma mater for the 1997-98 season. He ranks second only to legendary coach Eddie Jeremiah and his 308 wins on the Dartmouth bench. ▶ YOUTH MOVEMENT The 2012-13 Dartmouth men’s hockey team currently sits second in the ECAC Hockey standings, something few predicted coming into the season. The major knock against the team was that it was too young and lacked experience. That is true as the Big Green are the youngest group in the league this year with a combined 18 underclassmen (10 freshmen, 8 sophomores). RPI’s 17 underclassmen rank as the second most, however the Engineers currently occupy last place with just one point in league play this season.
