GAMEES NOT
LAST TIME OUT The Big Green battled regional rival Vermont at home last Sunday, falling to the 12th-ranked Catamounts, 4-1. The game could’ve easily gone the other way had Dartmouth been able to capitalize on several quality scoring chances in the first period. However, the strong play of UVM goalie Mike Santaguida and his 14 saves in the first frame allowed the Catamounts to regroup and leave Hanover with the win. The lone goal of the game for the home team came off the stick of junior Tim O’Brien midway through the middle period for his second tally of the season. SCOUTING THE SAINTS As it stands now, St. Lawrence is in a three-team tie for fourth place in ECAC Hockey standings with 10 points thanks to a 5-4-0 league record. Overall, the Saints are 9-10-2 this season with signature wins over Niagara (10-2), Ferris State (2-0) and Cornell (3-1). However, that win over the Big Red came last weekend at home and was the first victory for the team from Canton since a Nov. 21 shutout of Princeton (3-0) at home, snapping a winless stretch of six games (0-5-1). The Saints could not capitalize on the momentum as they lost the following night to Colgate, 2-0. Hanover native Patrick Doherty leads the team in scoring with 16 points, while sharing the lead in assists (11) with Drew Smolcynski. Dartmouth transfer Brian Ward is second on the team with 12 points on five goals and seven assists. Freshman netminder Kyle Horton has carried the load all year, boasting a 9-9-2 record to go along with a 2.08 goals against average and a .934 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS Like their North Country rivals, Clarkson also sits in fourth place in the conference standings with 10 points. The Golden Knights have a 4-3-2 record against teams from ECAC Hockey, but are below .500 overall with a 7-10-4 record this season. Clarkson struggled in its two home games last weekend, falling 2-1 to Colgate on Friday night, while being shutout, 2-0, by Cornell the following evening at Cheel Arena. Senior Joe Zarbo (74-11) and sophomore defender James de Haas (4-6-10) are the lone two players on Clarkson’s roster to have reached double-digit point totals in 21 team games played in 2014-15. Zarbo leads the way with his seven goals, while Troy Josephs’ seven assists are the most among all players in Potsdam this season. Sophomore Steve Perry has been solid in net with a 1.85 goals against average and a .916 save percentage to go along with a 7-6-1 record.

AGAINST THESE TEAMS LAST SEASON Early in the year, these two opponents made the trip to Hanover and each time both came away with wins. Clarkson picked up a 3-2 victory on Nov. 8, while St. Lawrence put on a dominant display the following night in an 8-5 win. However, Dartmouth exacted some revenge in mid-February with a 3-1 win in the Saints’ home rink before a resounding 6-1 triumph the next night in front of the Clarkson faithful in Cheel. FIVE’S A CROWD Goals from juniors Brad Schierhorn and Jack Barre last Friday night at New Hampshire were the fifth tallies of the season for each player. They moved into a share of the team lead in goals with seniors Tyler Sikura and Eric Neiley.
LOOKING FOR A ‘W’ IN 2015 Dartmouth still has yet to pick up a win since the calendar flipped to 2015. The Green are 0-2-2 in four games since January 1, tying No. 11 Denver (1-1) and UNH (2-2), while dropping games to No. 15 Boston College (3-2) and No. 12 Vermont (4-1).

ECAC HOCKEY THE REST OF THE WAY The game with the Catamounts was the final non-conference contest of 2014-15 for the Big Green, who finished the regular season with a 3-2-2 mark against teams from Hockey East (BU, BC, UNH, UVM), Atlantic Hockey (AIC, SHU) and the NCHC (DU).
OUTSHOOTING IS BETTER For Tim O’Brien, the goal against the Catamounts was the second of the season. It broke a streak of 12 games without a tally for the junior, whose only other goal this year was the overtime winner at No. 8 Union on Nov. 7 in the second game of the season.
TOP OF THE CHARTS… AGAIN! For the third time this season, Dartmouth appeared at the top of the NCAA.com Men’s Hockey Plays of the Week. In this most recent instance, Jack Barre earned the distinction for his diving, backhanded goal high and to the shortside over the glove of UNH netminder Adam Clark. Barre joins Tyler Sikura (Dec. 9) and Brad Schierhorn (Nov. 11) as Big Green players to earn the top spot on the weekly plays in 2014-15.
30 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER The Green have won just one game this season when finishing with 29 or fewer shots on goal (at Union). That leaves them 1-6-0 overall this season when failing to reach at least 30 SOGs. However, the likelihood of a win rises exponentially when hitting that mark as the team is 5-0-3, including a 3-0-1 mark when hitting the net more than 40 times.
HANOVER CONNECTIONS Expectations are for a good deal of St. Lawrence fans to be in attendance on Friday night as the Saints have numerous connections with the Upper Valley. Not only is senior and alternate captain Patrick Doherty from Hanover, but sophomore and 2014 ECAC Hockey Co-Rookie of the Year Gavin Bayreuther is from Canaan. Additionally, Bayreuther is cousins with former Big Green players Nick Lovejoy ’14 and Ben Lovejoy ’06. Finally, Brian Ward came in with this year’s senior class, but left school midway through the 2011-12 season to return to juniors, opting to join the Saints the following season as a transfer.

AT THE TOP The Big Green’s upperclassmen continue to lead the way this season after Tim O’Brien and Geoff Ferguson had two of the three total points vs. Vermont. Through 15 games, Dartmouth’s juniors and seniors have accounted for 90 points (81.1% of total points), second among all ECAC Hockey teams to only Colgate (114). However, the more

BOB GAUDET ’81
GAME 17 // CLARKSON // JAN. 17, 2015
//KOENIG FAMILY HEAD COACH OF MEN’S HOCKEY
//18th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH //27th YEAR AS HEAD COACH // BIO //
Entering his 18th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program in 201415, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. Most recently, Gaudet reached 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont. In 26 seasons as a head coach, including the last 17 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 10 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2014-15 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 244 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 244-24663 (entering 2013-14). The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007, Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the
DARTMOUTHSPORTS.COM
Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a freeagent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey teamwhile at Hanover High School. Kelly began at Dartmouth in 2013-14.
