DARTMOUTH OPENS HOME SLATE WITH IN-STATE RIVAL UNH ▶ WEDNESDAY’S GAME Just four days after beating Oregon in overtime to open the 2013 season, the Dartmouth women’s lacrosse team will be back in action Wednesday against New Hampshire in the home opener. Originally scheduled for 3 p.m., the opening draw between the two Granite State teams from Scully-Fahey Field has been moved to 1 p.m. due to the possibility of inclement weather. ▶ WELCOME HOME Starting off the year with a road win, the Big Green will welcome the Wildcats to Hanover for the team’s home opener. UNH served as the Green’s home opener in 2011 as Dartmouth came out with the 9-5 win. During head coach Amy Patton’s time in the Upper Valley, UNH has been her team’s opponent in its first home contest seven times and in each instance Dartmouth has come out on top. The Big Green are 8-1 vs. UNH overall in home-opening games. ▶ SOLID MARK In 40 all-time home openers for the program, Dartmouth is 34-5-1. During Amy Patton’s 20 seasons on the sidelines, her team is 19-1 with the lone blemish coming back on 2004 with a 7-6 overtime loss to 12 James Madison. Since then, the team has won its last eight Hanover debuts. ▶ SCOUTING THE WILDCATS New Hampshire comes into the game having lost its first two match-ups of the 2013 season at Hofstra (1312) and at home against No. 14 UMass (18-9). Laura McHoul leads the team with eight points on three goals and five assists, while Jenny Simpson’s five goals are tops among her teammates. Kathleen O’Keefe has been the goalkeeper of record both games, posting a 16:35 goals-against average and a save percentage of .356 in 106:26 of action.

▶ AGAINST THE ‘CATS Dartmouth holds a 21-17 advantage in the all-time series between the two, including victories in the last two meetings. The first game between the two in-state rivals came back on May 15, 1973 with New Hampshire handing the Green and White a 6-0 loss. ▶ LAST TIME AGAINST UNH Last season’s annual meeting was the season opener for both squads and came in Durham on Feb. 25. Five goals from senior Kirsten Goldberg and hat tricks from Hana Bowers and Sarah Plumb sparked the visitors to a 13-7 win.

▶ SOLID START The league office announced Monday morning that Bowers had earned Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week honors for the three-goal, four-point performance Saturday against Oregon. The weekly accolade as the top offensive player was the first for a Dartmouth player since Kat Collins ’11 was recognized on Mar. 28, 2011. ▶ THE WINNER Junior Liz Calby kicked off her season in fine form as she scored twice against the Ducks. Her second of the day proved to be the biggest as it came with 1:03 remaining in the overtime period and put her team up 8-7. Her first of the afternoon and season came via the free-position shot with 13:21 left in regulation and cut the Oregon lead to one, 6-5.

▶ WATCH OUT FOR HER For the second straight year, Big Green goalkeeper Kristen Giovanniello has been named to the Tewaarton Award Watch List. The annual accolade is presented to the top male and female college lacrosse player in the country at the conclusion of each year. Giovanniello

was also on the list as a sophomore in 2012 following an All-American season the previous spring. ▶ OVERTIME GAMES With the win in Eugene, Dartmouth stretched its streak of victories in overtime games to three. The Big Green have played just one OT contest in each of the last two seasons, defeating No. 1 Maryland (2011) and No. 3 Duke (2012) prior to taking down the Ducks. The last overtime loss in a non-conference game for the Green came back on Mar. 18, 2009 against the then-No. 2 Terrapins (13-12). ▶ RANKS The team is once again ranked No. 12 and No. 13, respectively, in the latest releases of both the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse deBeer Media Polls. That continues the program’s incredible stretch of being ranked in 66 consecutive match-ups. The last time Dartmouth played a game in which it was not ranked in the nation’s top-20 was a May 4, 2008 contest with Duke in the season’s final tilt. Since then, the Green have been ranked in every game played since the start of the 2009 season. ▶ HOME COOKING The Big Green were a perfect 7-0 last season at home at Scully-Fahey Field. In 2011, the team was 8-0 on its home field during the regular season, but lost to Albany in the NCAA Tournament on May 15. The last regular season home loss for Dartmouth was April 17, 2010 against Penn.

▶ WHAT’S NEXT? Following Wednesday’s game with the Wildcats, Dartmouth will head back out on the road for its first of two away from Hanover as it takes on Yale Saturday in New Haven. The contest with the Bulldogs will once again mark the Ivy League opener for both after Dartmouth edged Yale, 8-7, last season in Hanover. ▶ TRI-CAPTAINS Leading the way this season for the Green and White will be a trio of seniors. Hana Bowers, Courtney Bennett and Kelsey Johnson will serve as the three captains picked to lead the team back to its third straight NCAA Tournament. ▶ STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE Once again Dartmouth will play one of the most challenging schedules in the country this season. Nonconference games against three teams ranked in the preseason top-10 highlight the 2013 slate as the Big Green will square-off with No. 3 Florida (March 9), No. 4 Maryland (April 14) and No. 7 Duke (March 17) this spring. In addition, the team’s Ivy League schedule is no easier as Penn and Cornell are ranked No. 11 and No. 16, respectively, in the IWLCA Poll. Harvard is No. 16 in the Inside Lacrosse DeBeers Media Poll as well.

▶ NEW HAMPSHIRE • FEB. 27, 2013 ▶HEAD COACH AMY PATTON The 2013 season marks the 21st for head coach Amy Patton at Dartmouth, having led the Big Green to unprecedented success both within the Ivy League and on the national scale. With 209 career wins, 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, nine Ivy League championships and four NCAA Final Fours to her credit, Patton is one of the nation’s elite coaches. Beyond Hanover, Patton is an active part of U.S. Lacrosse, having recently served as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Developmental team. Dartmouth has been a model of consistency under Patton, ranked in the IWLCA top-20 during every single season that she has coached and has ranked in the top-10 nationally in 18 of those, including in both 2010, 2011 and 2012. As a program, Dartmouth is one of just five teams to be ranked during every single season since the IWLCA began weekly polls in 1988. In 20 years as Dartmouth’s head coach, Patton owns a 221-103 overall record, 105-30 in Ivy League play, winning nearly 78 percent of Dartmouth’s conference games. Since her arrival in Hanover in 1993, the Big Green has reached double figures in wins 16 times and advanced past the NCAA first round seven times. Patton’s teams are no strangers to perfection, five times winning the Ivy League unbeaten, most recently in 2005. From 1997-2001, Dartmouth won 22 consecutive Ancient Eight contests, en route to threestraight 7-0 championship seasons. Dartmouth’s defense has ranked in the top-10 nationally in scoring defense seven times since 2002, including leading the nation in that category in 2006. In 2012, Patton and the Big Green finally won the Ivy League Tournament Championship, taking down top-seeded Penn, 6-4, in the title game. The Green

held the Quakers without a goal for 44 minutes to complete the comeback win two days after knocking off Cornell in a thrilling 9-8 game. In winning the crown, Dartmouth would advance to its 13th NCAA Tournament and the 12th since Patton took control of the program. Patton’s 19th season at the helm (2011) was a special one in which Dartmouth won its 11th Ivy League Championship and made its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance. Ranked as high as 10th nationally during the season, it marked a true return to glory for the Big Green, which had not won an Ivy title since 2005 and had not been to the postseason since 2006. Dartmouth also knocked off previously unbeaten No. 1 Maryland on May 1, snapping the Terps’ 28-game winning-streak and becoming the first team other than North Carolina to beat Maryland since 2008. Patton’s efforts have not gone unrewarded on a personal level. She was named the IWLCA National Coach of the Year in 1998, was one of three finalists for that honor in 1993 — her first season at the helm — and has been the Northeast Region’s Coach of the Year three times (1994, 1995, 1998). One of the most recognized names in college women’s lacrosse, Patton is a prominent member of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). She was vice president of the IWLCA for two years. Most recently, Patton headed the Brine All-America selection committee and has served on the Tewaaraton Trophy selection committee. Patton was a U.S. Squad selector in 1993, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007 and 2008. She was also a member of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Committee and assistant coach for the U.S. National Developmental team in 1998-2000. Patton served as head coach of the developmental squad from 2006-09. Prior to her appointment as head coach at Dartmouth, Patton served as an assistant to former coach and athletics director Josie Harper from 1991-92. Patton served as an assistant for the University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team during the 1990 season. Patton is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland where she earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. As an athlete, Patton was a four-year letterwinner in both lacrosse and field hockey, earning All-America and All-ACC accolades. She was a member of Maryland’s 1986 NCAA national championship lacrosse team and earned the Terps’ scholar-athlete award.
