LAST TIME OUT The Big Green are coming off a thrilling 3-2 win against No. 11 Michigan last Saturday night in front of a standing-room only crowd at Thompson Arena.

SCOUTING CORNELL -.The Big Red come to Hanover early this season following a trip to Thompson for the regular season finale in 2015-16. -.Cornell is 0-1-0 after a loss at Merrimack in its opener last Friday night. The Red were dealt a 3-2 loss, but showed resilience after falling behind 3-0 midway through the second period. A late goal in the middle frame from Matt Buckles and an extra-attacker, power-play goal in the final minutes of the third pulled the visitors to within one. That would be as close as they got with Merrimack holding off the final surge and bid for the equalizer. -.Buckles and Mitch Vaanderlaan represent the lone two players with goals, while six total players registered points. - .Senior Mitch Gillam — brother of former Dartmouth standout Josh Gillam ’11 — is back in goal this season. However, Gillam was relieved in the opener for junior Hayden Stewart to come in and play the final 27:41 of the game. In all, Gillam has made 60 starts in his Cornell career and boasts a .925 save percentage to go along with a 2.13 save goals against average. He appeared in goal 95.5 percent of the time for the Big Red last year.

AGAINST THE BIG RED These two teams traded road shutouts a year ago with Dartmouth taking the game in Ithaca, 3-0, with Cornell returning the favor on Senior Day at Thompson Arena with a 1-0 win. In that win at Lynah Rink, it was believed that Charles Grant became the first visiting conference goaltender to record multiple shutouts in the rink after also posting a 1-0 win there on Feb. 28, 2014.

SCOUTING COLGATE -.The Raiders have played seven games this season, winning their first last Saturday night with a 5-3 triumph against visiting Maine. -.Colgate is 1-3-3 prior to its Friday night tilt in Cambridge at Harvard. It’s three ties to this point of the season are tied with UConn for most in the nation and already two more than any other ECAC Hockey team. -.Sophomore Adam Dauda is the Raiders’ leader early in the season, posting team highs in goals (3), assists (4) and points (7). All three of his tallies have gone on the power play, while assisting on another for four points on the man advantage. -.Head coach Don Vaughan has used all three of his goalies already this year, but it’s been mostly senior Charlie Finn in the crease as he has a 1-2-2 mark to go along with his .876 save percentage and a team-leading 3.42 goals against average. AGAINST THE RAIDERS - .Dartmouth and Colgate played five times last year, including an epic three-game first-round match-up in Hanover that included a pair of overtime games. The Green won both regular season games (3-2 in Hamilton and 5-2 in Hanover in the regular season’s penultimate game), before taking the postseason series in three games. -.Senior captain Brad Schierhorn notched the program’s first hat trick in 189 games dating back to a Nick Walsh ’12 trick vs. Harvard on Nov. 27, 2010. The third goal came 10:59 into overtime, giving the home team Game 1 with a 3-2 victory. -.In his final game at Thompson Arena, senior Tim O’Brien sent Dartmouth through to the quarterfinals with a doubleovertime game-winner at 4:37 of the night’s fifth period. LATE-GAME HEROICS -.Troy Crema’s goal with 49 seconds left in regulation marked the first time Dartmouth had scored a non-empty net goal in the final minute of regulation in almost two full years. -.The last time the Big Green notched a goal in the final minute of the third period against the opposition’s goalie was Schierhorn’s game-tying goal at Union on Nov. 7, 2014 as part of the 4-3 OT win after trailing 3-0 midway through the second period. FIRST GAME. FIRST POINTS. - The Big Green got quality production from their freshman class in their collegiate debuts against Michigan. Cam Strong anchored a line of rookies with Will Graber and Ryan Blankemeier. Strong scored halfway through the second period for his first goal in a Dartmouth sweater with Graber and Blankemeier earning assists on the play. Strong appeared to score again late in the third, but the apparent second goal of the night for the Montana native was waived off due to what the refs deemed goaltender interference. -.Daniel Warpecha also got on the board with an assist on Kevin Neiley’s second-period score. HALFWAY THERE With his second-period goal, Kevin Neiley is already halfway to his total from a season ago. The Pennsylvania product scored the first two goals of his career in a 5-2 home win on Jan. 15 last season against Clarkson. Neiley finished the year with 11 points, but didn’t manage to find the back of the net again. He got the goal-scoring monkey off his back with a well-placed wrist shot low to the blocker side against Michigan’s Jack LaFontaine two minutes into the middle frame, finishing off a play started by Warpecha digging out a puck along the halfboards and feeding his linemate for the shot. QUIETLY GOOD -.Devin Buffalo isn’t the flashiest goalie, but he has proven to be a really good reliable netminder for the Big Green in his time. Buffalo made 22 saves in the first game of the year, earning the win. -.For Buffalo, Saturday’s game marked his first career home start. The junior goaltender made four road starts last season, including his first career start at Michigan last November (T, 1-1). He would go on to earn his only win prior to Saturday at Rensselaer the following weekend. WIN THE DRAW, WIN THE GAME -.Dartmouth won 52-of-76 faceoffs against Michigan in the opener (68.4%). -.Sophomore John Ernsting won 18-of-23 (78.3%) draws in the game. -.Last season, the Big Green were 33rd in the nation in faceoffs (49.7%), while Ernsting was third on the team (52.3%).

GAME NOTES

VS. CORNELL

FROM A BAD START TO A GOOD START Dartmouth was just 5-9 in games in which the opposition scored first last season, while 2-8 when trailing after the first period. Those figures are already trending the other way as the team overcame a 1-0 deficit through 20 minutes to earn the win against Big Blue.

WINNING CLOSE ONES The Green and White were 8-3 in games decided by a goal last season and are now 1-0 in that same regard this year. Dartmouth must win close, low-scoring games in order to be successful as the team’s 0-12-1 mark when allowing four or more goals a year ago indicates. When holding a team to three or fewer markers, the Big Green were 18-4-1 in 2015-16. WHAT’S AHEAD? Dartmouth will head out on the road for the start of a seven-game roadtrip next week against Quinnipiac (Nov. 11) and Princeton (Nov. 12). The Green will then head to Vermont on Tuesday, Nov. 15 for a mid-week tilt against the Catamounts.

PRESEASON WARMUP Dartmouth and Harvard played to a 3-3 draw on Oct. 22 at Thompson Arena before the Crimson win in an exhibition shootout, 3-2. Dartmouth got on the board just a minute and 59 seconds into the game as freshman Daniel Warpecha broke in along a long feed from Cam Roth to make it a 1-0 game. Trailing 2-1 headed into the third, the Big Green scored twice on a five-minute power play from senior Grant Opperman and junior captain Carl Hesler. Harvard would eventually tie the game late, resulting in the draw. Troy Crema and Corey Kalk each scored in the shootout. GOALTENDING DUTIES The game was played with two 20-minute periods and a 25-minute third. Buffalo played the first 40 minutes, making 16 saves, while freshman Adrian Clark stopped six in 25 minutes. Freshman goalie Dean Shatzer did not dress for the game. PRESEASON POLLS Dartmouth was picked ninth by both the men’s head coaches from around the league as well as the media contingent in ECAC Hockey who voted. The team was picked seventh by the head coaches and ninth by the media last year and made it all the way to the league semifinals for the first time in five years. COACH G Bob Gaudet is now in his 20th season behind the bench of his alma mater. A graduate of the Class of 1981, Gaudet has 279 career wins with the Big Green, second all-time only to the legendary Eddie Jeremiah ’30. Gaudet comes into the season with 621 games as the Dartmouth head coach to his credit and 887 in his career between his time in Hanover and nine seasons at the helm of Brown (1988-1997). A BIG CLASS OF ROOKIES Dartmouth has 11 first-year players on its roster this season after graduating 10 from a year ago. The 11 freshmen on the team are the most by any program in the ECAC and are tied for fourth in the nation with Alaska and Saturday’s opponent, Michigan. Only Miami (14), American International (13) and Boston College (13) have a larger Class of 2020 than do the Big Green. CAPTAIN CARL AND THE GANG Carl Hesler was tabbed as the 118th captain in the program’s 111-year history back in June. Hesler is only one of two players to appear in all 68 games in each of the last two seasons, joining last year’s team captain Brad Schierhorn. Seniors Grant Opperman and Josh Hartley will serve as the team’s alternate captains in their final year with the team.

DARTMOUTHHOCKEY

WHO’S BACK? Hesler (11-10-21) is the team’s top returning scorer from a season ago after finishing second behind only Jack Barre (12-14-26). Troy Crema (5-14-19) was fourth on the team in scoring and tied for the lead in assists. Sophomore defenseman Connor Yau is the top plus/minus player from a year ago to return after posting a plus-12. Josh Hartley led Dartmouth and was 10th in ECAC Hockey in blocked shots with 59 a season ago, while his 1.69 per game ranked eighth.

TIES? NO THANKS - The Big Green played to just one tie last season, the 1-1 draw at Michigan. Colorado College, Omaha and St. Cloud also all finished the season with just one tie, while Minnesota did not play to an even score once. The Gophers were backstopped by Eric Schierhorn, brother of Dartmouth captain Brad Schierhorn ’16. Minnesota and the Big Green were the only two teams in the nation without a conference tie. - Head coach Bob Gaudet has 99 career ties between Brown (31) and Dartmouth (68).

BOB GAUDET HEAD COACH | DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1981

20th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH 29th YEAR AS HEAD COACH Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ‘91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his fourcareer shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team while at Hanover High School. Kelly is a member of the Class of 2017 at Dartmouth.

In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11, eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12 and reaching 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont in 2013-14. In 2014-15, Gaudet reached both 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 career wins between Hanover and his time at Brown. In 28 seasons as a head coach, including the last 19 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 11 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2016-17 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 279 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. The 2015-16 season was special for Gaudet for both his current and former players. He guided the Big Green back to the ECAC Hockey semifinals for the seventh time, becoming the first team in conference history to reach the league’s final weekend of competition without having a single player earn a spot on any of the three all-conference teams, demonstrating a team-first mentality. Ben Lovejoy ’06 also helped the Pittsburgh Penguins capture the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history and, in the process, became the first Dartmouth player since Myles Lane ’28 in 1929 to win the Stanley Cup. Lovejoy, the first New Hampshire-born player to win the Cup, brought the trophy back to Thompson Arena for a public event where he was introduced to the crowd by Gaudet whom Lovejoy credited with “giving me a second chance at hockey.” After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 199798 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 . The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two
