▶ NEVER BEEN HIGHER Despite a loss to UMass, Dartmouth enters the weekend as the eighth-ranked team in the nation according to the most recent USCHO poll. The Green and White had been ranked 10th for the last four weeks before Sunday’s win over No. 2 New Hampshire moved them up to No. 8, it’s highest ranking ever since the inception of the current polling system in the mid 1990s. The team also earned a first-place vote in the poll, the first ever for the program.
▶ LAST TIME OUT Dartmouth’s last outing was a tough one as it suffered just its third loss of the season, this time coming at the hands of UMass in the 2012 Ledyard Classic Championship Game. The one-goal defeat (3-2) followed a 4-1 win over second-ranked UNH at a sold-out Thompson Arena Sunday in the preliminary round.

▶ TOURNAMENT TEAM TALENT Sophomore Tyler Sikura and senior co-captain Mike Keenan were named to the 2012 Ledyard Classic All-Tournament Team for their two-game performances. Keenan was as solid a defender as there was on the ice all weekend and Sikura scored once and assisted on another in the games against the Wildcats and Minutemen.
▶ GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK For the second time this season and the third time in his career, junior Cab Morris was tabbed as the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week. The accolade came thanks in large part to his career-best 31 saves Sunday night in the 4-1 win over the Green’s Granite State rival. Overall, Morris finished the weekend with 57 stops. ▶ HECK OF A TIME FOR HIS FIRST One of the most highly-touted incoming players in college hockey this season, Nick Bligh had gone his first seven games without a goal. That unwanted streak ended just 6:05 into Sunday night’s game as his shot from the high slot beat UNH’s Casey DeSmith for the game’s first goal and the first in Bligh’s Dartmouth career.

▶ HECK OF A TIME FOR HIS FIRST AS WELL Following Bligh’s first career marker, freshman defender Ryan Bullock also notched the first in a Big Green sweater with a redirected shot from the point. For Bullock, it was not only his first tally, but also his first collegiate point. ▶ SOME CALLS WERE MADE Against UMass, a combined 87 penalty minutes were handed out by the officiating crew on 23 calls. Dartmouth was whistled for 13 of those penalties, totaling 40 PIMs. Entering the game, the Green ranked as the least penalized team in the nation at 8.2 per game and had only once had as many as 12 minutes and six calls go against them in a single outing. ▶ PATTERSON’S SHORTY Brett Patterson finally got back on the scoresheet with an assist on Bullock’s goal Sunday, but his shorthanded goal the following night against UMass was his first tally since Oct. 27 at Brown in the Ivy Shootout. Sikura had registered the team’s only two other shorthanded markers this year prior to Patterson’s. ▶ SIKURA’S SOLID STREAK With a goal Sunday and a helper Monday, Sikura has a five-game point streak. More impressive is the fact that the sophomore from Aurora, Ontario, has points in all but one of Dartmouth’s 13 games this year and has a team-leading 19. ▶ STILL STRONG Despite UMass scoring twice on the power play and snapping the Big Green’s streak of 32 straight penalties killed off over a 10-game stretch, Dartmouth’s PK unit still ranks second in the nation. The Minutemen were 2-for-11 on the night with the man-advantage after Dartmouth went 41-for-42 on the PK through the first 12 games. Currently, the Green’s 94.3% success rate ranks behind only UNH (94.9%), a team that Dartmouth scored a PPG against in its match-up. EXPECT A STRONG SECOND Quinnipiac and Dartmouth are two teams of four in ECAC Hockey with 20 or more goals in
any one period this season (Colgate, Union in the 3rd). For both programs, that strong scoring stanza has been the second. The Bobcats have found the back of the net 22 times in the middle frame this year, while Dartmouth has done so 20 times. Both teams have also allowed just nine goals apiece in the second period. ▶ SCOUTING THE BOBCATS Friday’s opponent is the hottest team in the country, riding a 12-game unbeaten streak; five better than the next best team (Robert Morris). Senior Jeremy Langlois and his 10 goals and 20 points lead Quinnipiac offensively, but, it’s the defense that is the trademark of this year’s team. Goaltender Eric Hartzell is 14-2-2 and boasts a 1.43 goals-against average (3rd best in the nation) and a .935 save percentage (13th). The Bobcats possess the second-best scoring defense, allowing opponents just 1.58 goals per game. Overall, Quinnipiac is 14-3-2 and jumped up four spots in this week’s USCHO poll to No. 5 after a home sweep of No. 12 NebraskaOmaha. ▶ AGAINST THE BOBCATS Dartmouth and Quinnipiac split the season series last year with each winning a home game. The Big Green won a wild affair in Hanover with two last-minute goals in the first meeting in November. The second saw Quinnipiac score twice in the first before holding on to a 2-1 win in February. The Bobcats own a 10-7-1 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 2004. ▶ SCOUTING THE TIGERS Princeton will play host to Harvard Friday night before the 4 p.m. Saturday meeting with the Big Green. Fresh off an 0-1-1 weekend in Burlington at the Catamount Cup, the Tigers are

▶ at QUINNIPIAC AND PRINCETON • JAN. 4-5, 2013 3-7-3 overall and carry with them a 2-3-3 ECAC Hockey mark. Princeton tied Merrimack, 2-2, before falling to the hosts from Vermont, 6-3, in the title game. Sophomore Tyler Maugeri and junior Andre Calof are tied for the team lead with 16 points apiece, while Mike Condon has played goal in all but two games. Condon is 3-63 with a 2.71 GAA and a .912 save percentage. ▶ AGAINST THE TIGERS The Big Green were 1-0-1 in 2011-12 against Princeton. Dartmouth won the home game on Nov. 5 with a thrilling 5-3 victory. In the early February game at Princeton, then-freshman Eric Neiley registered his first two-goal game and helped the Green earn a 3-3 tie and crucial league point. The second contest was delayed more than an hour due to three panes of glass breaking at Hobey Baker Rink throughout the day. Saturday’s matinee (4 p.m.) will be the 192nd meeting all-time between the two with Dartmouth leading 93-83-15. ▶ ECAC HOCKEY FROM HERE ON OUT The rest of the schedule is nothing but league games for the Big Green who will not play the annual Battle for the Riverstone in Manchester since UNH came to the Ledyard Classic. The remaining 16 regular season games and ECAC Hockey Tournament will all be versus conference foes. ▶ TERRIFIC AT THOMPSON The loss to UMass was the first blemish on the Green’s home schedule so far this season. Entering Monday’s game, Dartmouth had been 7-0-0 in games played on their own home ice, including two wins over teams ranked in the top-10 (No. 8 Union and No. 2 New Hampshire).
▶ WHAT A CROWD! Officially, the announced attendance inside Thompson Arena on Sunday night was a sellout of 4,500 people. That figure ranks at the ninthhighest single-game figure in the building’s 37year history. The highest figure since Thompson opened its doors in the fall of 1975 was 5,048 against Brown on Feb. 14, 1981 when maximum capacity was higher due to previous fire code regulations. ▶ SNAPPED Dustin Walsh saw his five-game point streak snapped against New Hampshire as he was held off the scoresheet. That did little to his confidence as he answered back with a pretty wrist shot under the crossbar in the first period of Monday’s game, his fifth marker of the season and the 49th point of his career. ▶ IVY LEAGUE UPDATE The Big Green are second only to QU in the ECAC standings, but heading into Saturday’s game with Princeton are the Ivy League leaders with 5 points and a 2-0-1 Harvard is second with 4 points and plays fourth-place Princeton (2 pts) Friday night. ▶ LEDYARD FACTS The 2012 Ledyard Classic was be the 24th for Dartmouth since it began in 1978 (then known as the Auld Lang Syne Tournament). New Hampshire is now 12-7 and has claimed the title four times, the last coming in 1986. UMass won it all this year and is 3-1 in two appearences (2012, 2008). Bemidji knocked off the Minutemen only to lose to Dartmouth, 4-2, in that 2008 title contest, (the Green’s last tournament win, but dropped a 4-2 game to UMass and an OT thriller to UNH on Monday night.

▶ at QUINNIPIAC AND PRINCETON • JAN. 4-5, 2013 ▶GAUDET’S CAREER
Head Coach
BOB GAUDET ’81 Now in his 16th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last two seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 15 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2012-13 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 219 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .507 winning percentage (219-212-54) is the third-best mark at Dartmouth as well. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-132 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 219-212-54 (Entering this year). The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth
its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year Award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. In the summer of 1990, Gaudet served as the assistant coach of the East Team in the Olympic Sports Festival, held in Minneapolis. In 1994, he served again as head coach of the East Team, and also coached the East All-Star Team in the EastWest Shrine College Hockey Classic. Gaudet spent the summer of 1998 behind the bench of the New England Select 16-Team at USA Hockey’s Summer Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Kelly is a senior at Hanover High School in 2012-13 where she is the starting goalie and co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team.

▶ WALSH STEPS UP Walsh’s two-goal performance against UVM on Dec. 5 was just the second multi-goal game of his career. The senior from Shannonville, Ontario, previously scored twice in a come-from-behind win against Princeton at home on Nov. 5, 2011. ▶ 30 FOR CHUCK Freshman goaltender Charles Grant turned aside 30 Vermont shots in the 4-2 nonconference win, his third of the season (3-1-1). It was just the second time this season that a Dartmouth goalie needed to make 30 or more saves in a game. Grant had the other, stopping 35 in a 7-4 win against Yale on Nov. 2. Morris registered his first 3-0plus save performance of the year with 31 against the Wildcats. ▶ KEENAN CONTINUES CAPTAINING Mike Keenan scored his second goal of the season just 2:33 into the Vermont game to give his team the 1-0 lead. He later assisted on Sikura’s insurance marker early in the final frame for another two-point night. He registered two assists against Bentley just four days before and currently has a four-game point streak. ▶ WHAT’S AHEAD? After playing at Quinnipiac and Princeton this weekend, the Big Green will return home for one game next week. They will skate against Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 12 in a 7:30 p.m. game that follows the women’s game with the Princeton (4 p.m.)

▶ BATTLE OF THE SPECIAL TEAMS In the Dec. 1 outing, Bentley came to Hanover boasting the nation’s best power play at 32.6%, but was dominated by the penalty killers from Dartmouth. The Big Green’s PK unit was a perfect 6-for-6 on the night, killing off two in each period.

▶ DEFENSE WINS OUT With numbers skewed from a 6-3 loss at No. 1 Boston College, the Green’s pride on defense took a hit by allowing the season high in goals. Bentley came into Saturday night’s tilt with the nation’s top scoring offense, averaging 4.08 goals per game. The Big Green defense stymied the Falcons’ attack for much of the night, holding them to just 20 shots and roughly two goals below their season average. ▶ YOUTH MOVEMENT The 2012-13 Dartmouth men’s hockey team currently sits second in the ECAC Hockey standings, something few predicted coming into the season. The major knock against the team was that it was too young and lacked experience. That is true as the Big Green are the youngest group in the league this year with a combined 18 underclassmen (10 freshmen, 8 sophomores).

RPI’s 17 underclassmen rank as the second most, however the Engineers currently occupy last place with just one point in league play this season. ▶ HE’S SICK A major part of that youth movement is Sikura. The sophomore center assisted on two goals against Bentley, including Lindblad’s tying marker in the second. His 10 points (4g/6a) in league games rank as the best this season by any player in ECAC Hockey. As a freshman, Sikura tied for the team lead with 25 points (11g/14a) in 34 games. This year, Sikura already has 19 points (8g/11a) in just the first 13 contests. ▶ BANGED UP Not to the same extent as last year, but the Green have suffered their share of injuries this season, losing 15 man-games to different ailments so far. Junior defender Taylor Boldt became the latest player to miss time due to injury, sitting out the 5-2 win against the Falcons, snapping his 76-consecutive games played figure to start his career. Sophomore winger and twoway standout Eric Neiley has missed the last two, but is expected to be back in the lineup Wednesday.
▶ HOME DEBUT After a hit at Brown knocked freshman Nick Bligh out of the lineup for five games, the Milton, Mass., native finally made his Thompson Arena debut Dec. 1 vs. Bentley. Bligh got his nerves out of the way early, picking up his first career point on classmate Brad Schierhorn’s third goal of the year just 6:15 into the night. Bligh added another helper on the team’s fifth goal, a Brandon McNally power-play marker with 1:15 left. ▶ THREE IN THIRD Tied 2-2 heading into the third period, Dartmouth used three goals in the final frame to pull away from the non-conference foe for the win. The last time the Green scored three or more in the third came in Game 1 of last season’s ECAC Hockey Tournament First Round series at Appleton Arena when they netted four in a 6-3 victory against St. Lawrence. ▶ A GLIMPSE OF THE NHL FOR A NIGHT Five former Big Green players were back at Thompson for an on-ice ceremony against UVM as Lee Stempniak ’05, Ben Lovejoy ’06, Tanner Glass ’07, David Jones ’08 and Nick Johnson ’08 return for a postgame autograph session on the concourse. In all, no other ECAC Hockey program could claim to have more alums in the NHL last season as Dartmouth’s seven (TJ Galiardi, JT Wyman).
