GAME NOTES ▶ THIS WEEKEND The Dartmouth men’s hockey team finally returns home to Thompson Arena after last playing a meaningful game inside its home rink more than 230 days ago. The Big Green will play host to Union and Rensselaer on Friday and Saturday nights with puck drop is set for 7 p.m. both nights. ▶ LAST TIME OUT A tough two games to open the season at the Liberty Hockey Invitational in Newark, N.J., saw the Green fall to 0-2-0 on the young season despite playing well enough to win both contests. Dartmouth dropped an overtime affair, 3-2, to Princeton in the opener, before suffering a 5-3 defeat the following afternoon at the hands of Brown. ▶ GAME 3 - UNION The Dutchmen come to town having struggled out of the gate this season, winning just one of

their first five games (1-2-2) so far. That lone win came in the second outing of the year, a 5-2 victory against Bowling Green. An 0-2-1 stretch against Lake Superior (0-2) and UConn (0-0-1) has followed, dropping Union from the USCHO rankings altogether for the first time in more than three years. Kevin Sullivan leads the team in scoring despite not having recorded a single goal this season, assisting on nine others. The offensive touch in terms of goals has come from the stick of freshman Michael Pintarelli who has a team-best four tallies thus far. In the crease, freshman goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos has been thrust into the starting position with the early departure of former Hobey Baker Finalist Troy Grosenick, who signed with the San Jose Sharks in the off-season. ▶ ALL-TIME AGAINST UNION Dartmouth holds the slight 24-19-7 advantage in the 50 all-time meetings between the two programs dating back to the late 1970s. ▶ WELCOME HOME Dartmouth has won its last two home openers, defeating Brown (2-1) in the 2011 Ivy Shootout and eventual national champion Yale (7-4) last season. The last time the Big Green fell in their Thompson debut was a 4-1 loss to RPI in 2010. ▶ A LATE LONG PASS A 65-foot stretch pass from Brett Patterson inside his own blueline sprung junior forward Eric Neiley in on a breakaway in the final minute of play against Princeton. The Warminster, Pa., native came in and beat Sean Bonar in the Tigers’ crease, sending the teams to overtime. The last time Dartmouth scored a goal in the final minute of regulation with the goalie pulled to tie the game was Nov. 17, 2012 when thencaptain Mike Keenan beat Andy Iles of Cornell with 51 seconds left with a shot from the point.

▶ GAME 4 - RENSSELAER Picked to be one of the best teams in ECAC Hockey this season, an early-season run has not dismissed those predications for Rensselaer. Projected to finish first by the media and second by the coaches in the preseason polls, the Engineers have jumped out to a 4-1-1 start following a 3-3 tie with Harvard on Tuesday night. RPI actually had a 3-0 lead in the first period, but surrendered the next three goals to the Crimson over the following two periods before taking away the one point in the standings with the draw. Leading the way for not only the Engineers, but also for all players in the country, is Ryan Haggerty and his nine goals in six games thanks to another on Tuesday. Jacob Laliberte is the leader in assists with six, overshadowing his lack of goals in the early going. An injury has sidelined Preseason All-ECAC Hockey Goaltender Jason Kasdorf, handing the reins back over to junior Scott Diebold, who has posted solid numbers in his five games.

▶ ALL-TIME AGAINST RPI In 79 previous meetings, Rensselaer has come out the victor 42 times, while tying Dartmouth on five occasions. The Big Green have posted wins in the 32 remaining contests, none of which have come in overtime, as they are 0-6-5 all-time against RPI in games that have been tied at the end of regulation. Last season, Dartmouth shutout the Engineers, 4-0, in November at Thompson, before RPI returned the favor with a 3-0 game in Troy at the Big Red Freakout in February.

▶ FOR HIS PART… In recording two assists on the weekend, Patterson was named to the Liberty Hockey Invitational All-Tournament Team. He would also set up Brandon McNally’s redirect power-play goal with the initial shot from the point in the loss to Brown. Twice as a freshman, Patterson posted points in consecutive games with the last coming in contests at St. Lawrence (Feb. 23) and home against Princeton (Mar. 1). ▶ ALMOST HOME Though he is from outside Philadelphia, Neiley feels nearly at home in games played in New Jersey since coming to Dartmouth in 2011-12. In four games played in the Garden State, including three against Princeton, Neiley has five goals. He scored twice against the Tigers as a freshman at Hobey Baker Rink, while also netting the lone Big Green goal in the game played there last season. He netted a fourth against Princeton in Newark, before adding a PPG against Brown on Saturday night. ▶ WELCOME BACK! After missing nearly the entire second half of the 2012-13 season, McNally rejoined the Dartmouth lineup in a big way this weekend. The Saugus, Mass., native helped set up the first Big Green goal with a drop pass at the blueline in the second period, only to score his first of the season with a deflection on the power play in the third, tying the score at 3-3. His final goal last season came at Brown, into the empty net in the final minute as he was taken down on the play, causing him to miss the remaining portion of the schedule.

▶ FIRST TIMERS Sophomore Jack Barre and freshman Troy Crema picked the perfect time to find themselves on the scoresheet for the first time as members of the Big Green. On the big stage of playing in an NHL rink, both Barre and Crema found the back of the net. Barre got Dartmouth on the board for the first time this season by knocking in a rebound at the top of the crease just 3:40 into the third period on Friday night. Crema got his first goal on a redirect of an Andy Simpson point shot just as a second-period power play was expiring Saturday against the Bears. ▶ CAREER DAY Simpson finished the game with two assists, helping to set up both McNally and Crema’s goals against the Bears. Ten previous times, Simpson had posted one assist in a game as Saturday helped set a new career best in both assists and points. ▶ GETS THE NOD, SPLITS THE TIME Making his first start in goal, sophomore James Kruger turned aside 17 Princeton shots Friday night in Newark. Kruger had made just one appearance in relief as a freshman last winter, but looked sharp when tested at the Prudential Center.A positive sign for the forwards could’ve actually served as a hindrance to the secondyear goalie as Dartmouth possessed the puck far more than its opponents, outshooting the Tigers, 40-20, limiting the Minnetonka, Minn., native’s ability to find his rhythm.

The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction.

Head Coach

BOB GAUDET ’81 Entering his 17th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program in 2013-14, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 16 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2013-14 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 234 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .508 winning percentage (234-226-59) is the thirdbest mark at Dartmouth as well. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 234-226-59 (entering 2013-14).

Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ‘95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champions twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his four-career shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. ▶ HOME COOKIN’ In 2012-13, Dartmouth was 12-5-1 in games played at Thompson Arena. Those 12 wins were the most of any Ivy League program and ranked third in ECAC Hockey behind Quinnipiac (15 in 22 games) and Rensselaer (13 in 19 games). The 3.44 goals per game (62 total) in those contests were the second most by any ECAC program, trailing only Colgate’s 3.88 (66).

▶ BACK AND HEALTHY After missing the final 17 games of last season, Brandon McNally is back and healthy as a junior in 2013-14. McNally had 11 points on six goals and five assists in 16 games before suffering a shoulder injury at Brown on Jan. 18 that sidelined the Saugus, Mass., native for the remainder of the year. Dartmouth was 10-5-1 before the injury and 5-9-3 after.

▶ WHAT’S AHEAD? The Big Green will continue its homestand early on with two more ECAC Hockey teams coming to Thompson Arena next weekend. Clarkson and St. Lawrence make the trip to the Upper Valley from the North Country for Friday and Saturday night tilts, both set for 7 p.m. starts.

▶ EUROPEAN TEAM BUILDING The team traveled to Italy and Switzerland this August and September, playing three games against professional teams. After starting the trip 0-2, the Green bounced back with a 4-1 win over Ritten Renon in the finale, beating former NHL goalie Chris Mason in the process.

▶ LEADING THE WAY Junior Tyler Sikura was named team captain following last season by a vote conducted by the team. Sikura is the second junior in the last three seasons to don the ‘C’ on his sweater after Mike Keenan was tabbed for the 2011-12 campaign. Sikura’s selection has made him the 132nd captain in the team’s 108-year history.

▶ FINAL TUNEUP In the lone stateside exhibition game of the preseason, Dartmouth knocked off the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, 7-2, on Oct. 18 at Thompson Arena. Charlie Mosey scored twice and finished tied with sophomore Brad Schierhorn (3A) for the team lead with three points. Sikura, Ryan Bullock, Brett Patterson and freshmen Grant Opperman and Kyle Nickerson each added a goal as well against the Ridgebacks.
