HOME-OPENING WEEKEND BRINGS FAMILIAR FOES TO HANOVER ▶ WEEKEND DÉJÀ VU For the second straight weekend, the Big Green will play the same two opponents in the same order as Yale and Brown come to Thompson Arena Friday and Saturday nights. In the first game of the 2012 Ivy Shootout, Dartmouth battled Yale to a 2-2 tie, before advancing to the championship with a 2-0 shootout win. Against Brown on Saturday, the Green and White claimed the title with a 4-0 blanking on the Bears’ home ice. ▶ ECAC HOCKEY OPENER After two non-conference games to start the season against conference opponents, Friday and Saturday mark the official opening of ECAC Hockey play. Dartmouth began last season 2-0 in league contests with a come-from-behind win against Quinnipiac, 5-4, and a 5-3 victory against Princeton the following evening inside a raucous Thompson Arena. ▶ SPECIAL TEAMS After a rough 2011-12 campaign with both the power play and penalty kill, it looks as though this year will be a bit different for the Big Green. Dartmouth went 3-for-9 (33.3%) with the man-advantage, while not surrendering a goal down a player, killing off all seven shorthanded situations. ▶ LATE-GAME HEROICS Junior Eric Robinson was back to his old ways of a year ago and leads the team in goals through two games. His first of the year came on the power play late in the contest with Yale. One-

timing home a pretty pass from sophomore Tyler Sikura, Robinson tied the game with just 3:04 remaining. Sikura and classmate Eric Neiley beat the Bulldogs’ Nick Maricic in the shootout to help their team advance. ▶ GOALIES GALORE Known for strong goalies the last four years, the Big Green aren’t as battle tested at the position this year. At least that’s what people thought until this past weekend. Junior Cab Morris stopped 18 shots and came up with a key save in the shootout Friday against Yale. Freshman Charles Grant followed up with a 24-save shutout Saturday night against the host Bears for the team’s first win of 2012-13.

▶ GREAT START Grant became the first Dartmouth goalie since Wesley Goding ’39 to record a shutout in his first career appearance. Goding accomplished the feat on Dec. 12, 1936 against Columbia in a 9-0 win. There is no record of how many saves Goding had to make to earn the shutout, but like Grant, it also came in the second game of the season (1936-37). ▶ FRESHMEN JUMP UP Both Tim O’Brien and Brett Patterson had a productive first weekend in Dartmouth sweaters while in Providence. O’Brien opened up the season scoring less than three minutes into the game with Yale as he beat Maricic with a laser shot coming down the right side of the ice. checked a loose puck off a Brown defender’s stick and into an open netmouth through a scrum in front. ▶ START ME UP O’Brien became the first Dartmouth freshman to score the team’s first goal of a season since Evan Stephens did it on Oct. 28, 2007 at Vermont 3:19 into the second period to open 2007-08. Stephens had some freshman help with assists from classmates Adam Estoclet and Matt Reber. ▶ LEADERS AGAIN Last season, Robinson led the team with 12 goals. This year he already has a team-best two through one weekend. Junior Matt Linblad had a team-leading 18 helpers in a sophomore season that was cut short by injury. Through his first two games this season, the Winnetka, Ill., native has three assists as he has set up all of the team’s power-play tallies. ▶ SIKURA SCREENS Originally credited to junior defenseman Taylor Boldt, Dartmouth’s third goal against Brown was eventually awarded to sophomore center Tyler Sikura with a redirect in the low slot. The goal was his first of the year, but was nearly the exact same play that he scored on McGill during the preseason. ▶ OPENING-WEEKEND SHUTOUT The 4-0 win at Brown marked just the second time in head coach Bob Gaudet’s tenure that the Big Green have blanked an opponent during the team’s season-opening weekend. The last time it happened was Gaudet’s first season on the job, beating Union on the road, 4-0, on Nov. 8, 1997. ▶ MOVE HIM TO MEEHAN Robinson has proven himself over the last two seasons to be a formidable scoring threat for the Big Green. But if he were to don the colors of Brown, the Foxborough, Mass., native might be the top player in the league.That second part

might not be true, but Robinson certainly does enjoy playing at Meehan Auditorium. Including last weekend, the junior wing now has four goals in his last three games at Brown’s home rink. He scored in each of the season’s first two contests and had a two-goal game in the Bears’ home finale on Feb. 18, 2011. ▶ LAST TIME WE BLANKED ‘EM Dartmouth’s 4-0 win Saturday night snapped a stretch of 46 games without a shutout. The last time the Big Green held an opponent without a goal was Feb. 4, 2011 and came at Brown. James Mello stopped all 39 shots he faced that night in Providence. ▶ RECENTLY AGAINST THESE TWO - Dartmouth’s tie and subsequent shootout win over Yale also marked the end to another streak. The Bulldogs had beaten the Big Green 10 straight games dating back to Jan. 9, 2009 when the Elis edged out the Green and White, 2-1. The last time Dartmouth came away with anything but a loss to Yale before the 2-2 draw was a 7-2 thrashing of the Bulldogs on Feb. 23, 2008. - It’s been a different story against the Bears as the Big Green have not lost in their last 10 in the series. Posting a 9-0-1 mark against Brown in that time, Dartmouth has won the last five meetings with a 5-5 tie on Feb. 6, 2010 the last time it failed to win. The Bears’ most recent victory against the Green and White came against Feb. 22, 2008 (5-4).

▶ YALE AND BROWN • NOV. 2-3, 2012 • THOMPSON ARENA ▶ FAMILIAR FOES ARE NOTHING NEW After this weekend, the last nine meaningful games dating back to the end of last season have come against just four opponents. St. Lawrence came to Hanover for the regular season finale in 2011-12 before Dartmouth went to Canton the following weekend to pick up the twogame sweep. A two-game swing to Cornell for the next round was the last of the year for Dartmouth. However, the team picked right back up where it left off with games against Yale and Brown in consecutive weekends to open 2012-13. ▶ COMING BACK Fans of the Big Green know senior forward Dustin Walsh and the superb talents he posses. But, fans around the league will hopefully get a glimpse of the Montreal Canadiens draft pick this weekend in a return to the lineup. Walsh has been out since last January, recovering from a lower-body injury. Having missed the team’s last 21 games dating back to Jan. 7 of last year through last weekend in Providence, Walsh’s scoring touch would be a welcome addition back into an already skilled forward group. In just eight games in 2011-12, Walsh had 10 points, good for an impressive 1.25 points per game. ▶ BAY STATE LINE Despite not scoring a goal together at Meehan, the line of Massachusetts natives Robinson, sophomore Brandon McNally and Nick Bligh was buzzing. Robinson scored twice on the power-play unit, while McNally and Bligh combined for several scoring chances through the first four periods of the weekend.

▶ FOURTH LINE FINESSE Rather than the traditional grinding fourth line, Coach Gaudet and his staff opted for a skilled group of freshman forwards to make up the fourth combination against the Bulldogs and Bears. O’Brien joined Jack Barre and center Connor Dempsey as a group that showed several times their ability to get pucks on goal and create offensive opportunities.

▶ BOLDT’S HELPER Playing without former partner Jim Gaudet for the first time in two years, Boldt registered an assist on Dartmouth’s third power-play goal of the year when his shot from the point was redirected by Sikura in the slot.As a sophomore last winter, Boldt had four points (all assists) in a defensive-oriented role with the team. He now has one goal and seven helpers for eight career points.

▶ TURN IT AROUND It took the Big Green until Nov. 18 last season before they scored their second power-play goal. This season, the man-advantage has found the back of the net three times in its first two games ▶ WHO’S BACK? Dartmouth returns five of its top six scorers from a season ago. Included in that mix is sophomore Tyler Sikura, who finished tied for the team lead with Doug Jones ’12 with 25 points a season ago. Now juniors, Eric Robinson and Matt Lindblad were statistical factors a year ago. Robinson led the Big Green with 12 goals last winter, while Lindblad’s 18 assists in just 26 games were also a team-high.

Head Coach

BOB GAUDET ’81 Now in his 16th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last two seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 15 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2012-13 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 219 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .507 winning percentage (219-212-54) is the third-best mark at Dartmouth as well. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-132 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 219-212-54 (Entering this year). The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth

its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year Award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. In the summer of 1990, Gaudet served as the assistant coach of the East Team in the Olympic Sports Festival, held in Minneapolis. In 1994, he served again as head coach of the East Team, and also coached the East All-Star Team in the EastWest Shrine College Hockey Classic. Gaudet spent the summer of 1998 behind the bench of the New England Select 16-Team at USA Hockey’s Summer Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Kelly will be a senior at Hanover High School in 2012-13 where she is the starting goalie and co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team.

▶ THE BIG GREEN ARE BIG AGAIN This year’s team will be one of the largest Dartmouth squads in recent memory, earning the team’s namesake. The collection of 28 players average just shy of 6-foot-1 in height and right at 200 pounds in weight, proving to be one of the largest teams in ECAC Hockey. ▶ SKILLED SOPHOMORES At the end of the 2011-12 regular season, no other freshman class in the league had accumulated as many goals as Dartmouth’s first-year players in league contests. The seven players combined for a total of 25 goals in the 22 ECAC Hockey games. Leading the way was Brandon McNally, a player that scored all 10 of his goals against conference foes, a figure that led the league. In the four postseason games, the then-freshman class also posted impressive numbers, totaling four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. ▶ NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING Freshman Nick Bligh was the lone ECAC Hockey representative and just one of 10 NCAA student-athletes to be featured on NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary List for the 2013 Entry Draft. The list is comprised of players from the major junior leagues across the continent, high schools and colleges that are eligible for the upcoming draft entering the 2012-13 season. Once completed the list is sent to NHL team scouts for the purpose of tracking those top prospects throughout the course of the year. A product of the South Shore Kings (EJHL), Bligh scored 22 goals and had 65 assists for 85 points in his lone season of juniors (43 games), helping him earn an invite to the Winnipeg Jets Development Camp this summer. . ▶ RETURNING SCORERS No other team in ECAC Hockey will have as many returning forwards that have scored 10 or more goals in a season during their career than Dartmouth’s five this year. Robinson, Sikura and McNally all reached double-digit goal figures in 2011-12, while Lindblad and senior Dustin Walsh each did so the year before. As a freshman, Lindblad netted 13 in 2010-11 with Walsh scoring 10 that season as well. Princeton also has five players coming back with 10 goals or more in a season, but that figure also includes defenseman Michael Sdao. ▶ SIOUX CITY CONNECTION Three incoming players will not need to work very hard on developing on-ice chemistry, as they were teammates on last season’s Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League. Freshmen Tim O’Brien, Geoff Ferguson and Brett Patterson all suited up for the team in 2011-12. Senior captain Mike Keenan played for Sioux City from 2007-09, registering 43 points (7g/36a) in 107 games with 222 PIM. ▶ NO LONGER A FAMILY AFFAIR The Big Green went from two pairs of brothers and a father-son player/coach combination in 2011-12 to no family ties this year. With the graduation of Connor and subsequent move to the AHL, younger brother Mark is left as the lone Goggin on the roster, with the same said for Dustin as older brother Nick graduated and now plays in the ECHL. After six straight seasons of coaching at least one of his sons, head coach Bob Gaudet is now the only member of the family on the current roster with Jim’s graduation last June. ▶ EVEN-STRENGTH SUCCESSES No other ECAC Hockey team scored as many even-strength goals as the Big Green did in 201112. In 22 regular season league games, the team scored 51 of its 63 total goals (11PP/1SH) while playing even. That figure equates to 81.0% of their final total. Dartmouth needed to be good while even as its 71 power-play opportunities were the least in the league; 13 fewer than the next closest team (Cornell - 84). The Big Green not only saw the fewest PP chances go their way in ECAC Hockey, but their 117 power-play opportunities were the fewest in the nation over the course of the year, 10 fewer than the next closest team (Alabama-Huntsville). ▶ FOR THE RECORD Since the turn of the century (2000-01), Dartmouth has not had back-to-back losing seasons. Just three times (2007-08, 2008-09 and 2011-12) have the Big Green been saddled with more losses than wins. In each instance (excluding last year), the Green and White have bounced back by finishing .500 or better the following campaign. ▶ PRO PLAYERS When the 2012-13 NHL season gets going, seven former Dartmouth players will appear on league rosters. No other team had more former student-athletes suit up for NHL teams last season than those seven former Big Green players. Clarkson and Cornell tied Dartmouth for the league lead as both also produced seven players.
