Wright’s play-off hopes still alive while Wade’s are over James Wade 1 Peter Wright 7 Peter Wright made sure the race for the final play-off spot in this year’s Betway Premier League will go down to the final week, after he thrashed James Wade 7-1 at the Manchester Arena last night. Snakebite made the most of some wasteful finishing from Wade, who with this result can no longer

finish in the top four this season. The Machine was out of the blocks quickly to take the first leg, but Wright then won the next seven legs to complete a crushing victory and move to within a point of Adrian Lewis in fourth place. “I had to keep the pressure on Adrian and I’ve done that tonight,” he said. “I’ve still got a chance in Rotterdam and I’ll be doing everything I can against Barney.”

MVG prevails in the battle of the Dutch Michael van Gerwen 7 Raymond van Barneveld 2 Michael van Gerwen kept hold of top spot in the Premier League with a 7-2 win over Dutch rival Raymond van Barneveld in Manchester yesterday. The world number one heads into the final week in Rotterdam in pole position to scoop the new £25,000 bonus for finishing top, as victory over Barney last night kept him ahead of Phil Taylor on legs difference. MVG averaged a superb 107.93 to beat Barney and missed double 12 for a nine darter in the sixth leg. Van Barneveld missed double 16 to break the van Gerwen throw in the opening leg, and then had a dart in the third leg for a break as

MVG managed to hold his throw in the opening exchanges. Barney took out 97 to finish off an 11 darter to level the match at 2-2, before van Gerwen won the next five legs to run out a comfortable winner. The first break of throw came in leg six when MVG hit eight perfect darts before missing double 12 for a nine dart finish. The league leader finished off 122 in the eighth leg to go 6-2 in front, and a stunning 167 checkout in the following leg wrapped up the win. “I had a little bit of pressure because I can still win the league and win the tournament but Raymond had nothing to lose and that’s dangerous,” van Gerwen said. “I was maybe trying too hard at the start.”

Top four hopes for Lewis are Adrian Lewis 2 Phil Taylor 7 Adrian Lewis saw his play-off hopes dealt a blow after Phil Taylor reeled off six straight legs to win 7-2 last night. Jackpot goes into the final week

of the regular season in the fourth and final play-off spot, but Peter Wright now trails the two-time world champion by just one point after he beat James Wade 7-1. Lewis knew a win over Taylor would book his place at The O2, and at 2-1 up he made a good start

in his bid to claim the two points needed to qualify. But the Power had other ideas as he won six consecutive legs to run out a clear 7-2 winner. Taylor finished off the match with a 121 checkout on the bull and heads into next week’s top of the

Anderson books return to The O2 with victory over Thornton Gary Anderson 7 Robert Thornton 1 Gary Anderson secured his place at The O2 after overcoming Scottish rival Robert Thornton 7-1. The defending Premier League champion produced a clinical display to book his spot in the play-offs in two weeks time. Thornton missed a dart at tops in legs two and four and it proved

costly, as the Flying Scotsman raced into a 4-0 lead. The Thorn spurned three more darts at a double in the fifth leg, but got off the mark in the next leg with a 74 checkout to make it 5-1. Anderson then took the next two legs to complete a 7-1 victory in the battle of the Scots. “I’m happy with the way things are going and to be in the play-offs now,” Anderson said.

Integrity of BDO board called into question after claims of unsavoury visits by director Alex Moss CHIEF DARTS WRITER The suitability of the British Darts Organisation board has been called into question after it is believed one of their directors confronted the site administrators of two online darts forums last week. Wayne Williams, tournament director of the BDO, is said to have visited the home of Mr Martin Hamill, known as ‘M H’ on The Darts Forum website on Saturday and shouted various profanity outside, which ensued Mr Hamill to call the Thames Valley Police. Mr Williams has also been accused of visiting another darts forum user, ‘nikkiboy’, who is the administrator of The Stars Of Darts forum on the same day. If these allegations are true, then it is undoubtedly another sorry chapter for the BDO, who only last week switched the venues of an upcoming tournament, the World Trophy, more than 200 miles away from its original location just four weeks before its start date. Mr Hamill, under the guise of ‘M H’ on The Darts Forum, was first to break the news to darts fans last Thursday that this year’s World Trophy had moved from the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester to the Lakeside Country Club. The BDO confirmed the venue change the following morning, which has led many darts fans to ask the question: why was this information released on a darts forum before the BDO did it themselves? “I got a tip off,” Mr Hamill told Darts Weekly. “I made two phone calls and it was all confirmed and after that two lines were put on the BDO website. “Why did thedartsforum.com publish the change of venue before the BDO? The big question is why was my site publishing everything when the BDO wasn’t? I’ve been

posting and publishing truth. “I’ve got the documents backing up everything I’ve posted, I really have, and I’ve posted most of them. There’s a few I can’t post for obvious reasons.” Mr Hamill recounted the incident in question to Darts Weekly this week when he said: “The doorbell went, the dog went potty, I went up to the door and there’s a bloke there I actually didn’t recognise. “He’s shouting and I just thought: ‘hang on a minute, what’s going on?’ My first thought was it was an associate of Warren Brown (director of De:Luxe). “There has been emails exchanged between me and Warren Brown and they have been posted online. “I actually didn’t think for one moment it was Wayne Williams as

‘His demeanour was aggressive and he asked about posts made on the forum’ I’ve never had any dealings with him before. “Nick from The Stars Of Darts was also visited on the same day. Nick has been vociferous in his thoughts about what I’ve been doing, digging, digging and digging and has been openly against it. “But Nick and I are mates and it was him who confirmed who it was at my door. Wayne Williams had visited him first and he phoned me and asked me for a description, and once I described him he said ‘that’s Wayne Williams.’” ‘Nikkiboy’ posted the following on The Stars of Darts forum on Saturday evening about his visit from who he alleges to have been Mr Williams: ‘I had a visit today from Mr Wayne Williams whom I failed to recognise at first but when he started to speak to me I guessed and asked him if it was Wayne and

he confirmed it. ‘His demeanour was aggressive from the start and he started asking me about things posted on here (The Stars of Darts forum) and elsewhere. ‘He threatened to get the site taken down and sue us, regarding publishing of letters and the BDO logo. I tried my best to explain how forums work but again he was having none of it. ‘It was then that it took a sinister turn as he made threats about my wife’s shop and how he’s from Merthyr and knows loads of Merthyr boys and he can shut it down easily, take that as you will but that’s what he said. ‘I pointed out to him that this is not the way civilised people behave but he was adamant. He left me in Oxfordshire at around 12:45 and headed elsewhere in his royal blue zip up jacket.’ Darts Weekly made several attempts to get a response from the BDO but they were unavailable to make a comment.

UKTV’s Dave confirms it will be showing the World Trophy The BDO World Trophy will be broadcast live on free to air television for the first time after an announcement on Wednesday confirmed UKTV’s Dave as the broadcaster for the event. Last Thursday it was reported on thedartsforum.com that Dave was the channel showing this year’s World Trophy, but the rumours were finally confirmed earlier this week. Boxing promoter Frank Warren announced on Wednesday he has partnered with UKTV to deliver live coverage of the World Trophy, which is now being held at the Lakeside on May 28-30. Dave will be screening extensive coverage of the tournament, with 10 hours of live action for all three

days starting at 12pm each day. Warren said: “Though I have worked predominantly in boxing for nearly 40 years, I have also promoted and been involved in various other sports throughout my career. “I am delighted to have been part of setting this event up and securing the BDO one of the UK’s leading broadcasters for the event. “In my opinion, Dave is the perfect channel for the event and with it taking place at Lakeside, the iconic home of British darts, I am sure the atmosphere will be electric.” Dave attracted a record-breaking peak audience for its first venture into showing live sport earlier this year, when three million people tuned in to watch David Haye’s comeback fight against Mark de Mori in January. Tickets are now on sale for the tournament and are priced at £12 (includes a £2 booking fee) and can be purchased online at: www.lakesidesurrey.co.uk

Duzza wins first title of year but fails to defend Denmark Open Glen Durrant held off a brave comeback from Ryan Joyce to win the Søgaard Denmark Masters and his first BDO title of the year on Sunday evening. Duzza had established a 4-1 lead in the final as he looked to get into the winners enclosure for the first time in 2016, but Joyce responded with three legs in a row to level the match up at 4-4. The BDO’s number one then took out 64 to go 5-4 up and broke the Joyce throw in the next leg to win 6-4 and be crowned champion. Durrant took home the DKK 20,000 (about £2,100) prize in what was the perfect response to losing his Denmark Open title the previous day. Lithuania’s Darius Labanauskas became the 18th first-time Open winner in the last 18 years of the tournament, as he edged past Davy van Baelen in a deciding leg on Saturday night. Lucky D twice went two legs clear of van Baelen, establishing leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in the final, before he was pegged back as the Belgian reeled off consecutive legs to make it 2-2 and 4-4. Van Baelen then took the lead for the first time in the final with a 14 darter in leg nine, before a 13 darter from Labanauskas took the match to a final leg. The recent HAL Open winner took out 74 in the decider to win his second title of the year. Elsewhere, Deta Hedman won both the Open and Masters women’s titles in Denmark.

Fullwell’s sacrifices pay off with return to European Tour Nick Fullwell is back on the PDC European Tour this weekend for the first time in more than three years, and is determined to prove himself on the big stage again. The West Midlands-based thrower came through two rounds of qualifying in March to qualify for the Peperami Gibraltar Darts Trophy, which gets underway at the Victoria Stadium today (1pm). Fullwell’s last appearance on the European Tour was in Germany back in 2013, where he beat both Jyhan Artut and Kevin Painter to reach the last 16 of the European Darts Trophy, before bowing out to the fourth seed Justin Pipe. “It’s been a few years since I’ve been in a European Tour event,” the 46-year-old said. “I’ve lost quite a few final qualifiers, but I managed to qualify for this one. “I had a couple of good results to get through and I’m looking forward to going to Gibraltar. It’s one of the better European ones to qualify for in my opinion. “I’m looking forward to proving myself again on the big stage, and hopefully competing at the higher level.” Fullwell dropped off the main tour of the PDC at the end of 2013 but good performances at QSchool have enabled him to make several appearances in the Players Championship events. Just a week after qualifying for

Gibraltar, Fullwell enjoyed his best run in a PDC competition for nearly 18 months when he reached the semi-finals of a Challenge Tour event in Wigan. “I’ve had a good start on the Challenge Tour this year,” he said. “I’m sat in 10th place on the Order of Merit, but then again that’s getting tougher and tougher. “The standard has just gone through the roof. It’s different class with the youngsters coming through and a lot of players are

finding it hard now. Players who have been there a long time and in the top 32, they’re seeing how difficult it is. “I’m putting in a lot of practise most days of the week. I’m back to practising again, where I wasn’t before because I had a bit of an arm problem. “But that seems to have cleared up now so I can put a lot more time in on the board. “I went back to work a couple of years ago as a lorry driver. Starting at four o’clock in the morning and finishing at 11 or 12 and then I get the practise in then. “Sometimes I’ll finish work and I’ll go and practise for three or four hours, so I’m missing out on sleep. “But it’s something I’ve got to do to try and catch everyone else. You have to make sacrifices. If you don’t put the time in now you’re not going to get anywhere.”

TOM BERESFORD TOM’S TUNGSTEN COLUMN

Future of the PDC is in safe hands after maiden wins Well, what a weekend it has been in the PDC for the future of the sport, with maiden wins for both Josh Payne and Gerwyn Price. The success of Payne on Saturday is a magnificent story for the 22year-old, as his best PDC run to date on the main tour was a quarter-final appearance three weeks previously in a Players Championship event in Barnsley. Payne has virtually guaranteed a spot at the Players Championship Finals in Minehead at the end of the year, and is firmly in the race for a spot at the World Matchplay. Qualifying for the Winter Gardens in July would be a huge achievement for the youngster, who also competes on the PDC Development Tour also, but seems now to be finding his form on the main tour. The way he won Players Championship Six on Saturday was sublime, as he defeated James Wade 6-5 in a deciding leg, he hit a 180 to leave 116. And with Wade waiting on tops to win the title, Payne took out double 18 to win. With obvious nerves of steel, I feel this is only the beginning for Payne. We will be seeing a lot more of him in the future for sure. As for Price, he has enjoyed a monumental last 18 months on the PDC tour. After climbing the rankings with

consistent quarter-finals and semifinal appearances on the floor beating big names on a regular basis, the Iceman then made his World Matchplay debut last year and reached the quarter-finals. Price went one step further and won event seven of the Players Championship after beating Peter Wright in the final and he has the potential to be in the top 16 in the very near future. The Welshman, like Payne has all-but guaranteed a Players Championship Finals spot, and is also certain to be back in the World Matchplay this summer. The pair are currently in the top six of the Players Championship Finals Order of Merit, with Payne in sixth place and Price in fourth. It was a great weekend for the future of the game, but already this year we’ve seen another young player in superb form. Benito van

de Pas, who won event four of the Players Championship, just a day after losing to Michael van Gerwen in another floor final. The 23-year-old is now up to 20th in the PDC rankings and is on the verge of the top 16 after being involved in the majority of the TV tournaments and playing well on the floor. Payne won nine consecutive matches against some of the best players in the sport at the weekend, and the odds were against him in the final against Wade, and again he overcame the odds to win a sensational last leg decider. Price replicated that form in his win on Sunday. The future is most definitely looking bright.
