New TV deal for BDO World Championship likely to be announced as early as today Alex Moss CHIEF DARTS WRITER A new television deal for the BDO’s World Championship could be announced as early as today, with a press statement regarding the tournament to be released before the end of this week. Following the BDO’s AGM, which was held at the Village Hotel in Walsall last Sunday, rumours have circulated that British free-to-air broadcaster Channel 4 is in line to snap up coverage of the 2017 staging of the organisation’s flagship event. Chairman of the BDO, Sue Williams, who it has been reported received 58 out of 66 votes to stay on the organisation’s board during the AGM, told Darts Weekly on Sunday evening: “There will be a press statement made regarding the World Championship this week.” As we went to press last night, the BDO had yet to release a press

statement, but one would assume it will be announcing a TV deal has been agreed for the tournament. In December last year, the Daily Mail reported that the BBC were going to axe its coverage of the BDO World Championship after the 2016 staging of the tournament in January. And in early February it was announced that the broadcaster

“A statement about next year’s World Championship will be made this week” declined to renew its contract with the BDO, thus ending a 38-year relationship between the two. At the same time, the BBC had struck a deal with the PDC to screen the inaugural Champions League of Darts, which takes place in Cardiff next month. The two-day event will be the first PDC tournament to be shown on the BBC, while for the BDO it

has left them scrambling to find a new broadcaster to screen its biggest tournament of the year. The rumour linking the BDO with the Channel 4, which has been circulating since Sunday, is not the first time the two have been connected together with a TV deal in mind. Back in April reports suggested that Channel 4 were in talks to broadcast the BDO World Championship next year, while BT Sport and Dave were also believed to have been interested. BT Sport shared coverage of the tournament with the BBC in 2015 and 2016, while Dave stepped in at the last minute to broadcast the World Trophy in May this year. Whether Dave has the resources to dedicate itself to showing nine days of uninterrupted coverage for the BDO World Championship remains to be seen, but if Channel 4 were to strike a deal with the BDO then they could show some of the sessions on their sister channels More4 and E4.

Durrant to make Grand Slam debut in November BDO number one Glen Durrant will make his debut in the SINGHA Beer Grand Slam of Darts in November, after being picked as one of the eight BDO players to compete in the cross-code event. The BDO announced yesterday how its eight representatives would be selected for this year’s tournament, with Durrant also joined by Scott Waites, Jeff Smith and Darryl Fitton. Waites qualified by winning the BDO World Championship at the start of this year, with runner-up Smith also earning a spot and his debut appearance at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton. Fitton returns to the tournament after winning the World Trophy in

May, while Durrant’s place was given for being last year’s Winmau World Masters champion. The remaining four places available to the BDO system will go to the top four non-qualified players from the BDO Invitational Rankings on September 30. Heading into this weekend’s Antwerp Open, the four currently on course to qualify are Scott Mitchell, Martin Adams, Danny Noppert and Jamie Hughes. Former Lakeside champions Mitchell and Adams both made their debuts in the Grand Slam last year, while for Noppert and Hughes, they would be making their first appearance in the event if they qualify at the end of next month. The Grand Slam was first held back in 2007 and in its nine stagings so far has been won by a player from the PDC eight times. In 2010, two-time Lakeside champion Scott Waites beat James Wade 16-12 to become the BDO’s first winner of the Grand Slam.

Lakeside steps in to host this year’s Winmau World Masters This year’s Winmau World Masters now has a venue after the Lakeside Country Club stepped in as hosts at the weekend. The BDO’s second biggest tournament of the year was without a venue after the Copper Box Arena, in London pulled out of hosting the event in late May. During the BDO’s AGM on Sunday it is understood that the new location for this year’s World Masters was announced. It is the second time this year that the Lakeside, which has hosted the organisation’s World Championship since 1986, has answered the BDO’s call to be the venue for another one of its events. The World Trophy was staged at the Frimley Green facility in May after its original venue, the Victoria Warehouse, cancelled its contract with the BDO. The World Masters is one of the longest running tournaments in darts, having been first held in 1974, and has been staged in Hull for the last six years. This will not be the first time that the World Masters has been held at Lakeside though. Between 1998 and 2001 the tournament was staged at the famous Lakeside venue. Glen Durrant (below) won the men’s title last year after beating Larry Butler 7-3 in the final, while the ladies crown went to Aileen de Graaf after she got the better of Lisa Ashton 5-4.

Ross is the Boss again after ending two-and-a-half year BDO ranking title drought Alex Moss CHIEF DARTS WRITER Ross Montgomery ended a twoand-a-half year BDO ranking title drought with victory in the Winmau Belgium Open on Sunday. The Scotland captain’s last success had come in the Dutch Open back in February 2014, with final defeats in the World Trophy, Scotland National Championships and WDF World Cup Singles all following in the last 30 months. Montgomery saw off the challenge of Northern Ireland’s Kyle McKinstry in the final, beating the ranking final debutant 3-1 to lift the trophy. Speaking to the Daily Record earlier this week, the 53-year-old revealed it was his disappointing performance in Blackpool the previous weekend which forced his wife Dorothy to step in. “In Blackpool I was shocking and I couldn’t hit a double if it was 10 foot wide,” he said. “It was a really bad weekend and after that Dorothy gave me a real kick up the backside for how I was playing and my attitude. “I’ve dropped down the rankings a bit in the last few months but she told me to get the finger out and let my darts do the talking instead of being too hard on myself in tournaments and letting things get to me. “I listened to her and went into last week in a really positive frame of mind and her talking-to encouraged me to relax more and show people the kind of darts I’m capable of.” Montgomery’s title-winning run in Antwerp began with wins over Bert Jan Mulder (4-2), Martin Steele (4-0) and Christoff Van de Wal (4-1), which set up a clash with Wesley Harms in the last 32. After coming through a deciding leg to beat the German Masters champion 4-3, Montgomery saw

off Willem Mandigers 4-2 to reach his third quarter-final of the season, but first since April. The former Zuiderduin Masters winner then came through another decider, as he beat Scott Mitchell 5-4 to advance to his first ranking semi-final of the year. And after a straight sets win over Jamie Hughes, Montgomery put an end to his ranking title drought by beating McKinstry (bottom right) 3-1 in the final. It was a vital win for the Scot, who before last weekend was looking like failing to qualify for the World Championship next year. But having now risen up to 21st in the Men’s Seasonal Invitational table, his hopes of returning to Lakeside once again are looking much healthier. “My ranking was an added

“I relaxed more and I showed people the kind of darts I’m capable of” pressure going into the Belgium Open but this win has helped me rectify that,” he said. “I’m in a position now where I don’t have any points to defend in my next few ranking events, whereas the players around me do, so I’m confident I will qualify for the Lakeside now. “With the attitude I’m showing after this week you never know. “I could even go and win another couple of events and end up being seeded for it.” The BDO circuit continues this weekend with a quick return to Belgium for the Antwerp Open, where Montgomery will be hoping

to build on Sunday’s win and further boost his chances of a 10th appearance in the BDO’s World Championship in January. Jim Williams is the defending champion this weekend after he whitewashed Sven Verdonck 3-0 in last year’s final. The tournament has seen nine different winners in the last nine years, with Jamie Hughes, Martin Adams, Joppe Bakens, Tony West, Stuart Kellett, Ian White, Andy Hamilton, Terry Jenkins and q most recently Williams all having lifted the trophy since 2007. ◊ Elsewhere, this Sunday the BDO Champions Cup is being held at the Event City, in Manchester.

Harris secures hat-trick of New Zealand Open titles in Rotorua Cody Harris was crowned New Zealand Open champion for the third year running in Rotorua on Wednesday. The 2014 and 2015 winner retained his title after beating Greg Moss 6-2 in the final. Harris is now level with PDC World Cup of Darts teammate Warren Parry and Herbie Nathan on three victories, but is the first man to win the tournament three years in a row. Dale Frampton (1983 and 1984), Barry Whittaker (1990 and 1991), Nathan (1997 and 1998) and Parry (1999 and 2000), along with Harris, had all previously won back-to-back titles. Elsewhere, Tina Osborne edged past Taylor-Marsh Kahaki 6-3 to lift the New Zealand Open ladies trophy.

Freeman gets to a 1,000,001 in challenge for cancer charity A darts player from Suffolk, England believes he could be the first player to complete the 1,000,001 challenge individually. Colin Freeman, from Bury St Edmunds, scored 1,000,001 points and finished on a double during a 10-day charity challenge around Suffolk last month. A minimum of £1,000 has been raised so far for the CLIC Sargent Children’s Cancer Charity, with Freeman completing the challenge in 43,731 darts, which included 149 180s. “I have checked online to see if any individual has ever attempted this challenge but could only find references to teams taking it on,” he said. “So it is possible that I could be the first player to attempt and complete it on my own.”

White hoping to replicate his form on the floor on the big stage to push his career on Alex Moss CHIEF DARTS WRITER Ian White picked up his third Players Championship title of the season in Barnsley on Sunday to make 2016 his most successful year since moving over to the PDC. The world number 11 edged past Benito van de Pas 6-4 in the final of Players Championship 13, which completed a hat-trick of wins on the Pro Tour. And ahead of the final four months of the season, which sees no fewer than five ranking tournaments being staged on the TV, White is aiming for a big run to bolster his chances of being picked for the Premier League in 2017. “I wanted it last year,” the Stokeon-Trent thrower said. “I think going into the World Championship last year I knew if I had a good run I had a chance of getting in the Premier League. “But I went out in the first round and I think that was on my mind, so I’ve said to everyone this year it’s not going to be on my mind. “I want to be in the Premier League, but when I go to tournaments now it’s a case of chasing number 10, chasing number nine in the rankings, rather than ‘I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do that to get in the Premier League.’ “The Premier League and the World Series is the place to be now. I’ve done everything else, I’ve been in the BDO World Championship, I’ve been in the PDC World Championship. “I’ve done the World Matchplay, I’ve done the World Grand Prix, so there’s only two left now.” White is aware that one good run in a TV tournament before the end of the season could secure him his Premier League debut next year. In this year’s tournament, Robert Thornton’s victory in the World Grand Prix last October, which saw

him beat Michael van Gerwen in the final, virtually sealed his spot. “Robert beat me in the quarterfinals so it is something like that,” White said. “You’ve just got to have one good run and at the moment I’m sitting around £45,000 from being up there in the top eight. “One good run, like getting to the semi-finals or a final, and you’re in there.” White burst onto the darts scene with his run to the final of the News of the World Championship in 1997, but it was not until 12 years later that he first tasted ranking title success. Victories in the Antwerp Open, England National Championships and Denmark Open saw him qualify for his first World Championship at Lakeside in 2010. A straight sets defeat to Stephen

“The Premier League and the World Series is the place to be now” Bunting in the first round sent White to an early exit, but his fellow Stoke thrower, Adrian Lewis, had already seen enough. “Adrian said to come over to the PDC,” White recalls. “I was playing in the BDO World Championship at Lakeside against Stephen Bunting, and were practising. “I think Adrian had just hit a 102 average in the Worlds against Phil Taylor and he said he’d pay for me to come across. “If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be where I was. I wouldn’t have taken that step, as I’d been made redundant so I didn’t have the money to do it.” Lewis sponsored White for his first eight months on the PDC circuit, before sponsors came calling and it’s fair to say he has not looked back since. x

Wilson targets spot in Grand Prix after best weekend yet James Wilson has his sights set on a place in the World Grand Prix in October following his most successful weekend of his PDC career to date. The former BDO number one, who moved over to the PDC at the start of last year, reached the semifinals of Players Championship 12 and 13 in Barnsley at the weekend. The £6,000 accrued from the two last four appearances, as well as qualifying for the HappyBet European Darts Grand Prix, has virtually secured the 44-year-old’s PDC World Championship debut at the end of the year. And with only £2,500 separating him from a place in the top 14 of the provisional Pro Tour Order of

After missing the last seven Players Championships, Gary Anderson made a winning return on Saturday, beating Terry Jenkins 6-5 in the final of Players Championship 12.

Ian White is now enjoying his most successful year on the PDC tour after winning Players Championship 13 on Sunday took his total of PDC Pro Tour titles in 2016 up to three.

xx x x x Merit for the World Grand Prix, Wilson is determined to keep his recent good form up. “My ambition was to qualify for the World Championship this year,” the Huddersfield-based thrower said. “I just missed out on it last year and this year knowing that I’ve qualified it takes a whole lot more pressure off you and you can play better. “I think I more or less qualified after getting to the first semi-final, but getting into the second semifinal has definitely put me there and I’m over the moon. “I’m not far off qualifying for the Grand Prix. Another big push and hopefully I can qualify for that one as well.” Wilson’s previous best run on the PDC circuit was a quarter-final appearance in a Players Championship in Crawley in May of last year, before he went one better on Saturday. The man nicknamed ‘The Jammie Dodger’ dropped just

three legs on his way to reaching the last 16 on Saturday, but was made to work against his next opponent Simon Whitlock, who he beat in a deciding leg 6-5. A 6-4 triumph over Simon Stevenson saw Wilson break new ground in the PDC, with his run ended by Terry Jenkins (6-3) in the semi-finals. Wilson lost by the same scoreline in the same round the following day, this time to Benito van de Pas, and put his change in fortunes down to an alteration in his game. “I just changed my game a little bit,” he explained. “I just slowed down a little bit. “I was throwing a bit too quick so I slowed my game down so I could concentrate more than I have been and it seemed to work for me. “I’m really pleased with my efforts this weekend. It really puts me in a nice position. “If you take your time to dedicate yourself you just hope things go your way and this weekend they did.”

RICHARD EDWARDS ASIAN DARTS CORRESPONDENT x

Seoul set for inaugural Korea Darts Championship This Saturday, ‘Darts Hive’ in Seoul, Korea will host the finale of what has been an eventful few months for Korean darts as a whole, and those who joined the tour back in March. I am both proud and delighted to say I am one of those participants. Back in spring, after reading about the tour the previous day and thinking ‘yeah, perhaps one day,’ I was handed a whipping in a Seoul Singles League game by a fine player from the States, Vidal De La Cruz. He happened to mention the tour, and how he was entering it, and at this point, ‘yeah, perhaps one day’ turned into ‘yeah, why not?’ A couple of weeks later I found myself at the PDK Stadium in Seoul. I lost all of my games in the group stage without getting a dart at a double! Despite this knock back, I was determined to improve. The months that followed I simply immersed myself in nothing but darts. I took part in any tournament, soft tip or steel tip, that I could, spending entire weekends at darts tournaments with Vidal and another darts addict, Kim Kirill from Russia. Although there were no major wins of note for myself, there were plenty of places and a heap of experience gained. As for the KDC (Korean Darts Championship) tour, I found myself winning legs, followed by winning matches and next thing you know a final and a quarterfinal appearance, both times losing

out to the player top of the KDC rankings: Daw Jon Yuk. These performances have helped me manage to qualify for the KDC Championships this weekend. As the big day approaches, I managed to catch up with SeungHeum Na, the CEO of Professional Darts Korea, who told me about the history of darts in Korea and how the KDC started. “Darts in Korea is growing quickly these past few years, especially soft tip darts,” he said. “Many electronic darts machine

“Darts in Korea is growing quickly these past few years, especially soft tip” companies are doing very well in this market. “Steel tip darts is also growing, but slowly. KDF, which is a member of the WDF, restarted actively working in Korea after a two to three year absence. “In 2016, the KDF and Professional Darts Korea have agreed to work together for the sake of Korean Darts. PDK is a partner of the PDC, the PDK selects players for PDC events and helps their name in Asia.” It is clear Mr Na is very

passionate about the development of steel tip darts in Korea, he expressed the importance of working together in order to improve the game and get more people playing steel tip. “KDF and PDK came to the conclusion that we need a mutual steel tip darts league in Korea. “We don’t have much of a market or any high profile players in Korea, this is why we are trying to develop the Korea Darts Championship.” So it appears, thanks to my ‘yeah, why not?’ attitude back in the spring, I am now part of the early days of what many hope will be the beginning of a really bright future for darts in Korea. Mr Na told me more about what that future will consist of: “This year the KDF and the PDK will select six players (four male and two female) for the WDF Asia Pacific Cup. “The same process will take place for the WDF World Cup in 2017. As for the PDK, we will join the PDC World Youth Championship in October. “It will be the first PDC event in which Korean players will be entered. “We are also trying to join more events next year, like the PDC World Cup of Darts, and even the PDC World Championship.”

firsts PDC tour card holder, Vincent Kamphuis, talks us through his darts memories First darts memory? It was the World Championship final in 1994 between Bobby George and John Part. That was the first game I watched on the TV and it introduced me to darts for the first time. First darts hero? From watching that Embassy final my first darts hero was Bobby George. First set of darts? The first set of darts I ever played with were a set of Eric Bristow 24g darts. First darts team? It was the Youth Laco team in the Netherlands. First game on TV? I haven’t played on the TV yet but I’m hoping that with my two year tour card on the PDC tour I won at Q-School earlier this year I can do so in the near future. First nine darter? I haven’t thrown a nine darter, I’ve missed the double about 12 times now I think. Hopefully it will come soon! First professional tournament win? I’ve not won on the PDC Pro Tour yet. The best I’ve done since I came through Q-School in January is getting to the last 32 of two Players Championship events. I beat Jelle Klaasen and Stephen Bunting during those runs.
