Australia is home to spectacular viewpoints for soaking in the final rays of the day. With expansive seascapes and landscape horizons, the Northern Territory offers a variety of sensational hues as the sun sets on another day in the Top End. Whether you are looking for the rich, vibrant amber tones displayed through the wet season, or the purple haze that paints the sky through the dry season, the Top End will offer something Instagramworthy every day. From 6.00pm onwards, you can enjoy the calming and sensational colours of the horizon with a bottle of wine, good company and of course, a camera. Recommended vantage points include the beautiful lawn-fringed beach at Cullen Bay, East Point Reserve, the Nightcliff Foreshore or the famous Mindil Beach. For those from the east coast of Australia, seeing the sunset over the ocean is something quite unique and completely unforgettable.

CROCS

The Northern Territory is home to the majority of Australia’s saltwater crocodiles. With an increase in crocodile attacks within the Northern Territory, it is vital that visitors heed the warnings provided to them when visiting the area. Swimming only in designated areas, staying five metres away from the waters edge when fishing and ensuring that food has been stored away when camping are all vital to ensure your safety around both saltwater and freshwater crocs. For those looking to witness the sheer size of these not-so gentle giants, the Adelaide River is a 70km drive from the city centre and is perfect for seeing one of these giants jump from the water right next to your boat. Call the jumping crocodile tour to secure your time. If you are feeling a little daring and courageous, ‘The Cage of Death’ at Crocosaurus Cove offers an experience like no other, where you can get up close and personal in the water with one of their hungry crocs. Or, for the faint-hearted travellers out there, the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT offers the opportunity to meet Sweetheart; A five metre long, safely stuffed saltie captured many years ago in Sweets Lagoon, just off the Finnis River.

FISHING

No matter what your preference for angling - billabong and estuary or deep sea coastal - sportfishing in the Northern Territory offers some of the best tropical action in Australia. With such a diverse range of spoils to be taken from NT waters, fishing in the region is a pastime enjoyed by many. Whether you are a beginner, expert coastal or recreational river angler, the beautiful waterways within each region offer some spectacular species. Barramundi fishing in the wide Daly and Victoria rivers is best between March and May, when the popular breed is most active. These tidal rivers offer many other breeds year round, with cod, mangrove jack and mud crabs highly sought after. Other great sport and reef fish including queenfish, Spanish mackeral, golden snapper, coral trout and red emperor can be found in the pristine coastal waterways of the Top End. Many tourism operators offer daily fishing charters that provide in-depth knowledge of the best casting points and techniques for reeling in the aggressive predator species.

SEASONS

Eight thousand years of annual monsoon cycles dictate the Top End’s swing between wet and dry seasons. Referred to as the ‘wet’ season, the months inclusive of November to April are characterised by increased humidity followed by monsoonal rains and storms. The Indigenous inhabitants of this region characterise the wet season by the changes in seasonal fruit and flowers, lush greenery and flowing water, with the weather greatly influencing their campsites and traditional food sourcing. The ‘dry’ season, between May and October, provided opportunity for the nomadic Indigenous communities to move freely and partake in ceremonial activities. The biting cold of the Central regions during this season sees the mercury drop below zero degrees through the evening. The changing of the seasons in October sees an increase of wildlife within the region with animals breeding, the emergence of hibernating reptiles and an increase of native fauna looking for the fresh fruit and seeds provided by the incoming wet season.

Defence of Darwin Experience The Defence of Darwin Experience at East Point commemorates the Bombing of Darwin. Lyons Cottage Located on the picturesque Esplanade, Lyons Cottage is one of the few historical buildings to have survived Cyclone Tracy and is the first hammered stone building constructed in Darwin. Aboriginal Bush Traders sell arts and crafts, coffee and bush tucker.

Fannie Bay Gaol Opened in September 1883, Fannie Bay Gaol was Darwin’s main prison for almost 100 years. The gaol houses a rare gallows, constructed for the last two hangings in the Northern Territory. The heritage listed gaol is an important archaeological and social resource that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Crab Claw is one of those places to just relax and dwindle away time, either fishing or relaxing by the pool. We

stayed here for 6 nights, but could have easy stayed longer. The staff are so relaxed and friendly, nothing is a bother. Crab Claw Island is the perfect place for family getaway… the beaches are pristine, white quartz sand – perfect for sandcastles, the harbour is calm and full of fish – making first time fishing experiences full of all the right kinds of memories, the swimming pools are fenced with child proof gates and both pools have safe access, the restaurant has a special kids menu with health options as well as the ‘traditional’ holiday fare, high-chairs and knives and forks just the right size for little hands. We have two accommodation options to suit families who need a bit more space. Our Family Cabins are set on the rear of the main walkway, approximately

15m from the beach. They are twice the size of our standard cabins and fitted with a double and four single beds, a dining table and chairs, large refrigerator, and en-suite bathroom facilities. Alternatively ‘The house’ is at ground level with absolute beach frontage. It has two bedrooms, each with a double and two single beds; a large balcony with a gate, dining table and chairs and BBQ.

S E T T L E M E N T In 1839, the HMS Beagle with Lt. John Lort Stokes aboard sailed into the waters of what is now known as Darwin harbour. Stokes named the harbour after his former shipmate British evolutionist Charles Darwin but contrary to popular rumours, Darwin himself never visited the area. Darwin was originally founded as Palmerston in 1869, although the port was always known as Port Darwin. The townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth was accelerated when gold was discovered at Pine Creek in 1871. In 1911, the budding young settlement was renamed Darwin. Darwin was granted city status in 1959 due to an extensive increase in population and economic growth.

Recognised for their strengths in performance, music and art, the Larrakia people had a vibrant traditional society based on close relationships with the sea, and trading with neighbouring groups including Wagait, Wulna and Tiwi, where they shared ceremonies, song lines and intermarried. During the colonisation period, the Larrakia people extended their hospitality to the early settlers and participated in some of the western cultural life before they were moved out to camps further from the city. 58 N T LIFE

Today, the Larrakia people total around 2,000 people and continue to play an important role in caring for land, sea and country, as well as public service roles such as doctors, lawyers, sportsmen and senior government positions. While the Larrakia people still do not have legal recognition of their continued connection to country, they still continue to care for our land and water. The Larrakia people hold significant meaning to sites around Darwin including Stokes Hill, Mindil Beach, Rapid Creek and Casuarina Beach.

It changed me a lot, made me grow up and take responsibilities to a new level - but then, nobody can tell how you deal with suddenly losing your son. It’s heartache, but I turned that heartache into a positive with Elijah’s being the name of my restaurant. It opened in 2016, but it’s only really started to kick off in 2017 and 2018 is going to be a very special year.” Elijah’s Kitchen tells the stories of the food. With every Indigenous clan or mob having their own stories to tell, Elijah’s will be sharing those stories through food to give people a different perception into what Indigenous culture is all about. Serving an exciting range of fusion cuisine that celebrates the best of fresh local produce, including crocodile fettucine and a range of native herbs and spices, Zach invites Darwin locals to come, dine and discover the unique stories attached to his dishes, passed on from generation to generation and to learn about how Aboriginal people are still living these stories. “If we can all support Territory businesses, then it’s making a platform for other people to start their own businesses,” says Zach. “Especially having a local food chain, that is quite important.”

STUART HIGHWAY ANTI-AIRCRAFT BATTERY

The site of the Quarantine AntiAircraft Battery was cleared in late 1941, leading to the construction of four concrete revetments for the guns, as well as a Command Post and other facilities to support the gunners. The Command Post included an underground room, which can still be accessed today, for ranging and plotting equipment. A lookout tower, around 6 metres (20 feet) tall was attached to the Command Post.

A number of airfields were constructed along the route south from Darwin, and the remains of many can still be seen along the side of the Stuart Highway. These airfields distributed aircraft over a wider area and provided alternative landing sites for damaged aircraft. Some of the more southern airfields also provided support stops for aircraft heading north to join the fighting. Of the almost 20 airfields along the Stuart Highway, Strauss Airfield

Each revetment housed a 94mm (3.7”) gun, capable of firing 19 rounds per minute. The concrete pads for the guns were created by digging holes up to 2.4 metres (8 feet) deep and 3.05 metres (10 feet) across, then pouring concrete into these footings while setting the mounting bolts for the guns in the surface. The Quarantine Battery is the most complete Anti-Aircraft site in Darwin and is located at East Arm, in the midst of an industrial estate.

ver the following years, a wide range of defensive structures were created, dotted along the coastal region, from the anti-aircraft battery at Fannie Bay to the watch posts at Lee Point. However, the greatest concentration of military structures was in the Dudley Point - East Point Military Precinct. The facilities in this area included search light batteries, large and small gun emplacements, radar and communication towers, ammunition magazines and command posts. The largest surviving structures in the precinct are the twin 230mm (9.2 inch) gun emplacements. The Defence of Darwin Experience (East Point Military Museum) surrounds the No. 2 emplacement, while the No.1 emplacement is still open to the public, enabling visitors to explore the rooms and ammunition lockers inside the structure, or to climb up to the walkway surrounding the gun opening. The longest submarine boom net in the world, at almost 6 km (3.7 miles) stretched across Darwin Harbour, from Dudley Point to Mandorah. One of the anchor points of the boom net is still visible at Dudley Point and a buoy from the net is on display just off the car park at Doctors Gully, on the edge of the Darwin CBD. The 'Peewee' camp was also situated in this area. The camp was home to workers from the Public Works Department, who were building the defence structures in the area. As often happens in Australia, the name Public Works Department was shortened to ‘PWD’, which in turn became known as ‘Pee Wee’. One of the original Sidney Williams huts still remains on the site, in front of buildings that today house the Peewee's at the Point restaurant.

Darwin was the scene of the biggest airlift in Australian history after Cyclone Tracy devastated the city in the early hours of Christmas Day 1974. Cyclone Tracy killed 66 people and injured thousands more. Many of those who died or were injured were struck by flying debris. More than 30,000 of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s then 43,000 people were evacuated to cities and towns all over Australia immediately after the devastation of Tracy. But for many Darwin was a hard place to stay away from and people returned to resume their lives in the capital city of the Northern Territory. After the cyclone the Darwin Reconstruction Commission (DRC), made up of Federal, Territory and Local Government representatives, was involved with the running and rebuilding of the city which gradually turned Darwin into the most modern capital city in the nation.

KAKADU NATIONAL PARK A LIVING

Kakadu National Park is one of the truly special places in the world – and it’s on Darwin’s doorstep! The park is internationally renowned for aweinspiring scenery, Aboriginal culture and enormous biological diversity. It’s listed as a World Heritage site for both its outstanding environmental values and cultural values. The Aboriginal custodians manage Kakadu National Park in partnership with Parks Australia to keep the local culture strong and conserve the environment. Aboriginal people have lived in Kakadu for at least 65,000 years. They are known in the region as Bininj. Aboriginal languages spoken in the park today include Kunwinkku and Gundjeihmi in the north and Jawoyn to the south. Today ceremonial life is rich and ongoing, and hunting and collecting bush foods and medicines are still vitally important. Kakadu is teeming with life. The magnificent landscapes contain vast wetlands, plunging waterfalls, tropical rivers, paperbark swamps, mangroves, monsoon forests, tropical woodlands and the towering and majestic sandstone escarpment. These habitats provide homes for an immense array of species including birds, reptiles, mammals and our famous estuarine crocodiles.

Many of the plants are used by local Aboriginal people for bush foods, medicines and weaving materials. The Aboriginal rock art paintings in Kakadu National Park are world famous, and represent the world’s longest continuing art tradition. Many of the rock paintings in Kakadu depict animals that are now extinct on the Australian mainland. The rock art provides a record of human occupation of the region dating back 65,000 years, and the X-Ray style of northern Kakadu rock art is incredible to behold. A visit to Kakadu National is something you’ll never forget and there’s a wide range of experiences to suit everyone – fishing tours, boat cruises, scenic flights, fully catered tours to suit all ages and stages, beginner walks to advanced hiking, waterholes, cultural tours and so much more. Kakadu is almost half the size of Switzerland, so at least a few days are recommended to visit to be able to appreciate the spectacular natural wonders of the park and the diversity of Aboriginal culture. Being a Darwin local, I feel privileged to have Kakadu National Park so close. When visiting friends and family ask for my advice about Kakadu I always say – It’s amazing, so take your time and don’t rush!

Kakadu Cultural Tours are owned and operated by Djabulukgu Association representing the Traditional Owners of Northern Kakadu and parts of Western Arnhem Land. They operate a boat cruise in Kakadu - the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise, and a great day trip from Kakadu to Gunbulayna Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land – the Arnhemlander Cultural & Heritage 4WD tour. Both are highly recommended.

GULUYAMBI CULTURAL CRUISE

If a boat cruise down the East Alligator River in Kakadu National Park with a local Aboriginal guide, spotting crocodiles, learning about bush food, medicine, hunting and Aboriginal culture sounds interesting, I’d highly recommend the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise. As a Darwin local, it’s one of our favourite things to do in Kakadu National Park, and something I always recommend to visiting family and friends.

ARNHEMLANDER CULTURAL & HERITAGE 4WD TOUR

The Arnhemlander Day tour takes you over

the East Alligator River into remote Aboriginalowned Arnhem Land to visit Gunbalayna Aboriginal community and the Injalak Art Centre. Along the way there are various stops to take in the breathtaking views and see some amazing cultural sites. The tour company is owned by an Aboriginal organization, which means that they have unprecedented access to ‘permit-only‘ areas that you wouldn’t normally be able to visit. This tour provides and incredible insight into the landscape and local Aboriginal culture and it’s a real privilege.

HAWK DREAMING WILDERNESS LODGE

During the Dry Season Kakadu Cultural Tours runs the Hawk Dreaming Wilderness Lodge in an extremely special and renowned part of Kakadu National Park known as Cannon Hill. Staying here is a special experience as you have exclusive access to a remote and restricted area of Kakadu. The walk to explore rock art sites and sunset on the escarpment is a must.

How far is it from Darwin? Kakadu National Park is approximately only 3.5 hours from Darwin on a sealed road. Do I need a 4WD? Many of the national parks main sites are accessible on a sealed road. There are other well-known sites such as Jim Jim Falls which require 4WD vehicles. How can I get more information? Parks Australia has an excellent website with all the information you need to plan your trip to Kakadu National Park. Make sure you visit the Bowali Visitor Centre in Kakadu to find out the latest advice on any closures, road conditions and travel advice. Passes and permits. All visitors to Kakadu require a park pass which you can purchase online or at the Bowali Visitor Centre Safety. As with anywhere in the Top End, you need to be aware of crocodiles. Be crocwise and only swim in locations that are clearly marked safe to do so.

ALICE SPRINGS HISTORY

Alice Springs began its modern history as Stuart, a telegraph station on the Adelaide to Darwin line, and the end of the Ghan railway. Until the early 1930s, Alice Springs was only the name given to a waterhole by Government Surveyor WW Mills in March 1871, while exploring the MacDonnell Ranges during the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. Alice Springs is named after Alice Todd, wife of the Superintendent of Telegraphs, Sir Charles Todd. The Telegraph Station was built adjacent to the waterhole. However, this dual naming created such confusion for administrators in Adelaide that on 31 August 1933 the township of Stuart was officially gazetted Alice Springs.

ABORIGINAL HISTORY

The Arrernte Aboriginal people are the traditional owners

of Alice Springs. Mparntwe (pronounced mbarn-twa) is the Arrernte word for Alice Springs and the surrounding region, which was created by the actions of several ancestral figures including the caterpillar beings Ayepe-arenye, Ntyarlke and Utnerrengatye, the MacDonnell Ranges being but one of their creations. Creation stories also describe traditional links with areas as far afield as Urlatherrke (Mt Zeil) in the West MacDonnell Ranges and Port Augusta in South Australia. Arrernte people continue to live in Mparntwe, observe traditional law, look after the country and teach children the Arrernte language and the importance of their culture.

TRANSPORT

In 1929 the railway line linking Alice Springs with Adelaide was completed and mechanised trains replaced camel trains. Motor and air transport to the Centre grew more frequent and reliable, as Alice Springs overcame its isolation. It was not till February 2004 that the train line was extended right through to Darwin. The completion of this long awaited line extension meant that this line would become the only great north-

south transcontinental journey by train in Australia.

In 1862 explorer John McDouall Stuart led an expedition (his third and final attempt) through the Centre, to the north coast, navigating and mapping the country for white settlement. As arguably Australia’s pre-eminent explorer, the Stuart Highway honours his remarkable feats of exploration and leadership. Following in Stuart’s footsteps, the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line from Adelaide to Darwin was completed in 1872 and made it viable for pastoralists to take up leases in the Centre. However, it was the discovery of alluvial gold at Arltunga, about 100 km east of Alice Springs, in 1887 that provided a population boom for the Centre.

THE CAMELEERS Afghan Cameleers forged their place in Central Australian history, driving their camel trains 600 km across the desert to deliver essential provisions from the railhead at Oodnadatta to Alice Springs. “Their contribution to the opening up and accessibility of the great mass of inland Australia was enormous and vital. The very backbone of Australia’s economy, the traditional spheres of pastoralism and mining, owe an immense historical debt to the cameleers and their camels.” Tin Mosques and Ghantowns – Christine Stevens 1989 Their legacy can be seen throughout Alice Springs and Central Australia, opening transport routes to the arid zones, taking part in exploration and contributing to the local population as a whole. Many families in Alice Springs today are direct descendants of those early pioneers.

ULURU

The World Heritage-listed and one of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most iconic symbols, Uluru is approximately 460 kilometres or a six hour drive southwest of Alice Springs. Right in the heart of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Uluru is a place that speaks of timeless folklore, rich indigenous culture and great spirituality. Traditional custodians of Uluru, the Anangu, believe this landscape was created by their ancestors at the beginning of time, and have been protecting these sacred lands ever since. The Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre is a great starting point to learn about Tjukurpa, the traditional law guiding the Anangu people. Displays and artwork explain the significance of Uluru from an Anangu perspective.

KINGS CANYON

This scenic landscape of rugged ranges, ancient sandstone walls rising hundreds of metres to a plateau of rocky domes, rock holes and gorges in the Watarrka National Park is breathtaking. The Luritja Aboriginal people have called the Watarrka National Park area home for more than 20,000 years. The ancient red rock faces that soar above dense palm forests of palms is an important conservation area and refuge for more than 600 species of native plants and animals. Enjoy one of the many walks within the National Park, the six kilometre Kings Canyon Rim Walk takes approximately 3-4 hours but the view down the sandstone chasm plunging 270 metres to the canyon floor definitely makes it worthwhile. Venture down into the canyon to the exotic Garden of Eden, a permanent waterhole surrounded by lush cycads and plant life, indicating that this part of Australia once had a much more tropical climate. Explore the unusual weathered rock formations that are called the Lost City carved out over time by water and wind erosion. For the less energetic, the shorter and easier Kings Creek Walk at the base of the canyon leads you through lush ferns and eucalypts to a platform with views of the sheer canyon walls above. And for the more adventurous the 22 kilometres Giles Track connects Kings Canyon to Kathleen Springs, a delightful spring fed waterhole.

TENNANT CREEK & THE BARKLY

Located 500 kilometres north of Alice Springs and 1000 kilometres south of Darwin, with Tennant Creek at its golden heart, is the Barkly. Its large cattle stations, fascinating wayside inns, historic stock routes, gold mining history, Aboriginal culture, interesting flora and fauna and the iconic Karlu Karlu/Devils Marbles make up this beautiful outback region of the Red Centre. Spend a day or two in Tennant Creek exploring its rich history and culture and enjoying the vast array of outdoor activities. The Barkly region is the outback Australian landscape you’ve always imagined: endless blue skies, vast desert horizons, and that electrifying sense that an adventure could be just around the corner. This part of Australia will show you just how enormous this beautiful country really is: the Barkly region alone is 323,514 square kilometres, which makes it bigger than Italy, the United Kingdom or New Zealand!

The ancient culture of the local Aboriginal people is very much alive. The fascinating art, cultural and interpretive centre, Nyinkka Nyunyu Art & Cultural Centre offers you the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal life, history and their connection with the land in the region.

The East and West MacDonnell Ranges stretch out for hundreds of kilometres on both sides of Alice Springs. The Arrernte people, believe giant caterpillars called the Yeperenye became the ranges - they entered this world through one of the dramatic gaps in the escarpments. The MacDonnell Ranges are rich in cultural and an adventure playground with hiking trails, four-wheel drive tracks, swimming holes, and camping spots but they differ in subtle ways – the East MacDonnell’s have more rock art but less permanent water, more history but fewer people. Much of the East MacDonnell Ranges depict the Eastern Arrernte Aboriginal Yeperenye Dreaming. At Emily and Jessie Gaps you will see rock art, red ochre and white lime paintings, as well as flocks of native budgerigars drinking from waterholes. Figs hug gorge walls, bloodwoods hang with bush coconuts and bush passionfruit grow from the sand. You will think this land is unyielding but you will be pleasantly surprised. The 300-year old ghost gum at Trephina Gorge is one of the finest natural features in the region. Trephina Gorge hosts five walking trails that showcase the sheer quartz cliffs, rivers and creeks. From the shades of N’Dhala Gorge over 6,000 prehistoric rock carvings, art and shelter sites, and rare plants will be revealed.

Gapuwiyak Culture & Arts Centre is located in the stunning, remote community of Gapuwiyak, also known as Lake Evella, located 120km west of East Arnhem Land. The Art Centre sell locally produced art work and house their own collection. Their Media center has a growing archive of old and new media relevant for the community.

WORLD WAR II HISTORIC SITES

Numerous allied Air Force bases were established across the Arnhem region during World War II and many of the communities are within easy access of the old air strips, bunkers and the wrecks of aircraft that were shot down during the war. During World War II, the Gove Peninsula was a key in the defence of northern Australia.
