Crossfit LITE is designed with the beginner in mind and there is no need to have any sort of fitness or prior gym experience. Weights are light, movements are basic and we control the saturation of intensity in your workout. General is designed for intermediate level fitness. Those that are comfortable in a gym and have some experience with the CrossFit methodology or other functional training systems. Movement range in difficulty and the intensity is controlled by you. With a website relaunch designed to better offer their training and coaching services, Annette and Doug Gillanders at Biznorth are using video technology and social media to reach out to their clients. “We service about 20 percent of clients remotely,” said Annette. “Of course, we still love to do face-to-face work. There is nothing lovelier than seeing your client’s face when they take on new learnings.” While some may say the Territory is experiencing tough economic times, Annette disagrees, calling it a ‘New Normal’. “We’ve just come off a major project high. I don’t believe anyone planned for what followed completion - not the government, certainly not business. People get caught in the high of the project, forgetting it is finite, and have over-committed financially. A ‘New Normal’ will shake the branches of businesses that have always done it this way. They will resist the idea that they need to provide well-executed tenders and be more accountable, and I don’t see this is as a bad thing. It’s how we can make sure we’re doing the best we can with what we have now.”

DETERMINATION DRIVES FAST CARS

HE’S RESTRICTED BY THREE LAYERS OF PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND A TIGHT SAFETY HARNESS STRAPPING HIM INTO THE SEAT. WITH NO VENTILATION, IT’S NEARLY 60 DEGREES IN THE CAR AND SWEAT BEGINS TO FORM ALONG HIS FOREHEAD. HE BREATHES DEEPLY, TRYING TO KEEP A STEADY HEART RATE, AND GRIPS THE WHEEL WITH GLOVED HANDS. THE LIGHTS GO OUT AND THE ENGINE ROARS. IT’S JUST ANOTHER DAY IN THE OFFICE FOR 21-YEAROLD DARWIN LOCAL AND MOTOR RACING DRIVER THOMAS MAXWELL.

Not so long ago, Tom said his dream was racing European Formula 1 or nothing. Casey Stoner and Daniel Ricciardo’s success had already proven Aussies could succeed in Europe and this was encouraging. But aspirations can take a different turn very quickly in the motorsport industry. Tom’s love for motorsport really took off when he began racing go-karts at 10 years old. His competitive spirit was quickly drawn into the thrill of racing and it wasn’t long until he outgrew go-karts and found himself whipping around the track of the Australian Formula Ford competition. Tom’s rapid success caught the eye of an English racing team and at just 17 he made the leap half way around the world to compete in the British Formula 3 competition. From here, Tom advanced to race in the European Formula Renault Championship in pursuit of his ultimate victory – racing Formula 1. Relocating to the other side of the world to race just two divisions below Formula 1 on some of the world’s best tracks is a rev-head’s dream, and this fact isn’t lost on Tom. ‘I think it was probably one of the most exciting things I’ve done in my life… to throw myself

ask; what if you’re just not good enough? Tom described these last few moments before the race like a test. The last opportunity to cram the game plan in whilst he still had the spare brain capacity. Going over where he wanted to make a move on the inside of a competitor and focussing on what he wanted to achieve helped dispel the nerves. ‘Once the lights go and it all starts you don’t have time to be thinking about that, it’s all subconscious from then on.’

Idling at the traffic lights I often try to imagine what a driver is feeling sitting at the grid before a big race. Tom laughs at my comparison and says after handling race cars it’s hard to get a kick out of driving the family Hilux to Woolies. ‘When you put your foot down and nothing happens it’s quite disappointing so you don’t get that same thrill when you give it a rev.’ Rather, waiting on the grid to start his first international race was utterly nerve wracking. Staring down the track in a completely different car half way around the world from home understandably opened the door for doubt to creep in and

‘I would’ve loved to continue pursuing F1 but it wasn’t financially achievable to be able to go up to the next few levels. ‘At the moment it’s solely about becoming a professionally paid racing driver. ‘That’s why I’ve come back to race Porsche in Australia, to pursue this different style of racing referred to as GT or sport racing.’

‘The driving level (overseas) itself wasn’t too bad to adjust to, it was more the living on the other side of the world away from family that was more tricky.’

Tom admitted putting the Formula 1 dream on the back burner was hard, but he’s not one to be defeated and dwell on disappointment. His determination to gain a foothold in the racing industry is tangible when he talks about his current opportunity in Australia’s Porsche Carrera Cup. His optimism rarely falters and he doesn’t view the transition to a Porsche double the weight of his previous open wheeled car as a setback, but rather another challenge to overcome.

‘My speciality was a stir fry. A few vegies, noodles and stir fry sauce, just bang it all in a pan and you’re ready to go!’

For the first time in the interview, I heard his heart sink a little as he chuckled, ‘That might be a little bit of an old dream.

Although starting out amongst international competition was daunting, it wasn’t the biggest hurdle Tom felt he faced in the move.

Moving so far from family comforts in Darwin was a big learning curve, but like any 17-yearold, Tom had a survival meal up his sleeve.

The financial logistics of racing in Europe was another huge obstacle in Tom’s career. With so much money involved in motorsport it’s often assumed drivers are being paid well for the stickers on their car, but this is far from reality for up and coming drivers. ‘Unfortunately, that’s the way motorsport is… it doesn’t really give a lot of people a fair opportunity to have a crack at it… it’s super expensive if you don’t have the right support,’ Tom explained. By super expensive, he means he wasn’t paid for any driving in Europe and had to source funds for all car maintenance, mechanics, engineers and damage. On top of this, finding sponsors in Europe to back a young Australian driver was no easy feat. ‘A lot of the connections I had in Australia didn’t have much benefit being promoted on the other side of the world.’ After learning how cut throat and expensive the motorsport industry is for young drivers, I

So, what’s next? Despite the extraordinary experiences Tom’s had he’s still an Australian racing die-hard at heart and is looking forward to the opportunity to race Bathurst. ‘It’s something I’ve watched as a kid for a lot of years so to be able to have a go myself is going to be pretty special.’ Looking further down the track, Tom is aiming to return to Europe in the international Porsche championship. But for now, when he’s not preparing to face off on Aussie tracks, you’ll find Tom lapping up the NT lifestyle either reeling in barramundi or watching Essendon, with an occasional CC and Dry in hand. Deep down, the thought of motorsport not being a part of his life is so unimaginable Tom will throw everything he has at it and there’s a sense it won’t be long before Thomas Maxwell is a household name.

After completing an accounting degree, The Adding Value CFO Principal, Michele Bain decided to study for the CPA qualification. Upon completion and finding little work opportunities in Darwin, Michele decided to create her own work and help small business owners understand their finances. Lack of sleep and time management can be huge barriers not to mention feeling insecure with our post baby body and being away from baby. But there are plenty of beneﬁts to getting back to the gym. Not only does exercise help us lose some of those pregnancy kilos, but more importantly it is great for our mental health. Spending time with other like minded adults can be really important when we spend all our time with a new baby. That one hour away to devote to ourselves and our physical and mental wellbeing is invaluable as a parent. There will always be plenty of excuses not to do it but it’s important to start. If you used to train 6 days a week, start with 3 and build up from
