2015
House of Commons Organized by the London Friends of UCU
His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, UCU Grand Chancellor From the beginning of its activity in Ukraine, UCU became one of the most active environments for the formation of church and community consciousness and introducing positive changes in the Church and society. Quality education of a new generation of priests and theologians, the achievement by UCU alumni of scholarly graduate degrees in some of the best universities of the world, the government’s acknowledgement of the study of theology, the state and international accreditation of theology programs, participation in ecumenical initiatives and international scholarly partnerships, the launching of new programs and directions of activities, administrative and financial transparency, active civic position of the administration. students, and alumni, and fruitful work on the Catechism of our Church as well as evangelization and catechization in Ukraine and abroad – all these cannot but evoke a sense of gratitude for the accomplished work,
His Excellency Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, Bishop of the Eparchy of Holy Family of London Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Great Britain I am thrilled to welcome for the first time in London the Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction in support of the Ukrainian Catholic University. Today’s UCU takes its beginnings from the Ukrainian Catholic University of Pope Saint Clement, founded by Patriarch Josyf Slipyj in Rome on December 8th, 1963. For its part, the Roman chapter of the UCU also has its prehistory: in 1928 Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky founded the Greek Catholic Theological Academy in Lviv. This unique institution of our Church brings me great joy. Only a few hundred students studied at UCU in Rome, yet today in Lviv we have over a thousand. The University is developing in different fields, which both Patriarch Josyf and Metropolitan Andrey could have only imagined. It is my sincere hope that people of good will support UCU’s ambitious development plans. I remember Patriarch Josyf always emphasizing the importance of knowledge, being second only to prayer. UCU unites prayer and knowledge to educate a new generation of Ukrainian Christians, who will endeavour to embody the great Christian values of love, honesty and justice in their own lives, as well as in building a Ukrainian state. Such a generation will be the foundation for lasting peace in Ukraine, Europe, and the world.
His Excellency Borys (Gudziak), Bishop of the Eparchy of Saint Volodymyr the Great in Paris of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in France, Switzerland and Benelux, UCU President The youth and students of Ukraine have accomplished incredible things in the last year and a half. The Ukrainian Catholic University was in the front lines of not only the Revolution of Dignity, but also the whole movement to reform higher education for the last 10 and even 20 years. It is this university that invites you for the gala dinner and banquet at the Parliament of the United Kingdom in London. I want to invite you to come and see those who are moving, energizing and transforming Ukrainian society, those who are making it a good future business climate, those that are making statements to Western Europe, to the European Union but also to the East, to Russia, saying that our dignity is God-given, is sacred and cannot be violated. This new generation for the new Ukraine while sacrificing much, is celebrating life. Come join us on June 19th in London for the celebration of their achievement. It is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the young people of Ukraine who are changing the country and making a contribution to our broader European community. I look forward to seeing you soon. God bless!
Father Bohdan Prakh, Rector of UCU The Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) is the only Catholic educational institution in all of the post-soviet realm. The University offers Theology programs and other programs as well: Psychology, History, Social Pedagogy, Journalism, Sociology, and IT courses. In spite of the war in our country, we continue to develop the University by opening new programs. Our goal is to fill the moral core of the entire nation and to introduce into society high academic standards based on truth and peace. At UCU, we envision what will happen after the war, how to overcome corruption, and how to educate a new generation which will transform Ukraine. In order to get rid of corruption and to bring Christian values into the sphere of governmental agencies, UCU has opened a Public Administration School which will prepare specialists to work in governmental positions and in the organs of local self-administration. Our Professor, Dr. Yaroslav Hrytsak, participated in the Commission to select the Head of the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Not for a second do we stand still. I cordially invite you to also join us in building our dynamic community.
UCU IN FOCUS
UCU IN FOCUS
ABOUT UCU The Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) is an open academic community which abides by the Eastern Christian tradition and creates leaders who serve with professional excellence in Ukraine and internationally – for the glory of God, the common good, and the dignity of the human person. UCU is the academic successor of the Greek Catholic Theological Academy, established in 1928-1929 in Lviv by Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky and headed by then Fr. Josyf Slipyj, who was its first rector. After the academy was closed down in 1944, the Ukrainian Catholic University of Pope St. Clement I in Rome, founded in 1963 and headed by Metropolitan Josyf Slipyj, began its mission and functions. In 1994, the activity of the above-mentioned academy was renewed by the Lviv Theological Academy (LTA), which in 1998 received international accreditation. The Grand Chancellor of today’s UCU, an independent, privately-funded educational institution, is His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk). It is the only Catholic university on the territory of the former Soviet Union, and open to representatives of all Churches and confessions. Students and lecturers include Greek-Catholics, Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Protestants and Jews. Over 2,000 students are enrolled in UCU’s educational programmes. Its library houses the largest collection of theological literature in Ukraine, and construction is underway on a new, modern student campus in Lviv overlooking the beautiful Stryiskij Park. In 2012 there was a celebratory opening of the Patriarch Josyf Slipyj Collegium. In 2013, the University opened the second student campus building - a multi-functional UCU Educational Campus. At present it houses the Humanities Department, with history students in particular studying there, alongside students of the Lviv Business School, the Institute of Leadership and Management, the School of Bioethics, and the School of Ukrainian Language and Culture. In 2013, the construction of the Church of St. Sophia of the Divine Wisdom and the Pastoral Centre was begun. This year the construction of the unique UCU Library will begin. This library will serve both as a traditional library as well as a contemporary information-exhibitioncentre. The Ukrainian Catholic University does not receive any state funding and operates thanks to the support of philanthropists from Ukraine and abroad. Today, the cost of educating a student for one academic year at the university totals around £2,100. However UCU tuition fees for students are offered to them at around a quarter of this cost. Being able to sustain this level of subsidy, which enable students of all backgrounds to attend UCU, is why it works hard to raise funds from a range of donor organisations and private philanthropists. The University stands for human values which people all around the world can recognise. Its recent project ‘From East to West’ brought almost 2,000 students from eastern and southern regions of Ukraine to spend a weekend in Lviv to familiarise themselves with its culture, its people, and to discuss the future of Ukraine. UCU aspires to become a leader among Ukrainian higher educational institutions by raising new standards in academic life, and by demonstrating that honesty, transparency, and responsibility are principles which can be applied in practice and can bring about positive change. By providing a quality education, UCU produces graduates who cannot only compete in the modern employment market, butwho are also mature, creative, spiritual individuals, ready to become leaders in Ukrainian society.

VOLODYMYR CHEMERYS Second-year student History Department Sholomyn, village in Lviv region Studying at the Ukrainian Catholic University is a great opportunity to get a decent and quality education. A friendly atmosphere accompanied by the support of professors, interesting meetings with outstanding people and spiritual development add special flavour to a student’s life, help to shape one’s personality and fulfil young people’s potential. Also, UCU students have plenty of opportunities for mastering foreign languages in different and exciting ways. Moreover, a sponsor scholarship encourages and inspires self-development and the achievement of the best grades possible”.
JULIA PARKHUTS Third-year student Faculty of Philosophy and Theology Oles’ko, village in Lviv region The Ukrainian Catholic University turned my dream of getting a good and decent post-secondary education into a reality. It even exceeded my expectations as I’ve found a community built on Christian values apart as well as getting a quality education. These are the people who have taught me many valuable things. For sure, this experience is a major moment in my personal and professional life. The UCU community goes far beyond the walls of academic buildings – it is made up of thousands of people who support and believe in us and it gives us strength and motivation to work better. For me personally, such support came in the way of an academic scholarship which helped my family pay for my studies allowing me to become a part of one big family – the Ukrainian Catholic University”.

MARIANA KOSTETSKA Fifth-year student Social Pedagogy Department Ternopil UCU for me, first of all, is not just a university, it is my second family. It is a family where I spend most of my time, where I was taught to be myself and to accept others as they are. Here I feel wanted and included as a student and as a person. This open and unconstrained atmosphere unites students not only among themselves, but also with the Dean’s office, the University’s administration and other UCU staff. I feel at home, and over the course of a day I see many smiling faces. I am extremely happy that I have this opportunity to learn and grow here”.
OLEG RUSHCHAK Fifth-year student Faculty of Philosophy and Theology Bushtyno, village in Zakarpattya Region UCU is a university where aside from maturing academically, you can feel the importance of Christian values which give direction to the dignity of each person. For me, this university is an example of preserving ethical and moral paradigms at a time when the world is undergoing daily changes. If you want to become a spiritual, artistic, cultural or intellectual authority of a new and young Ukrainian generation, UCU is the place for you. If you are successful in your academic study, you can be rewarded with a scholarship – an incentive to help reach for your achievements yet to come. UCU is a place where dreams come true”.

ENTERTAINMENT TRIO ZHAYVIR (Taras, Nataliya Stepanyak and Christina Skrypka) The idea to form our family trio originated from our appreciation and affinity towards the Ukrainian folk song culture. As a family of musicians, we wanted to prolong the legacy of our culture by playing the folk musical instrument- bandura. Since 1991, we would meet regularly to perform together as members of the municipal cappella of Bandurists in our hometown, Ivano-Frankivsk, Western Ukraine. Our membership with the Cappella allowed us to popularize the Bandura in other regions of Ukraine, such as Zaporizhya, Chernihiv and Rivne regions. Further performance opportunities triggered a demand for a smaller chamber ensemble, which is how our trio came to be. Our repertoire consists of original works of Carpathian composers, such as, Bogdan Yurkiv, Volodimir Domshinsky, Yevhen Bodnarenko and Zoya Slobodyan. We frequently perform arrangements of popular folklore and Christmas carols. The varied repertoire granted us with opportunities to perform to nonUkrainian communities and partake in international song festivals. We are also regular guests in the Christmas carol services in the churches of North Finchley (St Barnabas and Finchley Methodist Church). With the tragic events in Kiev and the consequent military interventions in Eastern Ukraine, we as a trio held several charitable concerts to raise funds for the Ukrainian army.
ENTERTAINMENT TARAS CHUBAY Lviv lyricist-performer, rock musician and composer, Merited Artist of Ukraine and the leader of the group “Plach Yeremiyi” (director, writer of music and lyrics, vocalist and musician). During his artistic career, Taras has written more than 100 songs and published 11 music albums. The son of the poet Gregory Chubay, in his works, Taras promotes the vivid poetry of his father and other modern Ukrainian authors. Taras received his music education in Lviv. He studied at the Solomiya Krushel’nyts’ka Lviv Music Boarding School and graduated from the Lviv Conservatory. In 1990, together with other like-minded individuals, Taras created the band “Plach Yeremiyi”, which in only a few years, occupied a leading position in Ukrainian hit parade charts. Despite moving to Kyiv, he continued working with “Plach Yeremiyi” as well as on his own projects, resulting in the recording of two solo albums – “Our Christmas” and “Our Partisans”. Soon, another album was recorded – “Light and Confession” – which debuted on September 11, 2003 at the Palace “Ukraine”. Taking part in this concert was the Chamber Orchestra “Lviv Virtuosos”, the band “Plach Yeremiyi” and the musical formation “Pikkardiyska Tertsiya”. The work and art of Taras Chubay and group “Plach Yeremiyi” is unique in Ukrainian music. It harmoniously combines hard rock music, which often changes into quiet ballads and then explodes, as well as serious and philosophical poetic lyrics, which compel one to deep thought.
