PROPOSAL FLORONES

Portoviejo, Ecuador

PROPOSAL FLORONES

Architecture | Urban Design

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign; AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino

Project Summary: Florones studies the socio-economic conditions of the consolidated neighborhood of Florones in the city of Portoviejo, Manabi. Presently the river that flows through Portoviejo is contaminated due to a lack of a sewage system, floods, and stubble burning upstream. A duct was placed that runs through the neighborhood of Florones to manage overflow. Before the duct was placed Florones was a valley that would flood contaminating the area, which in turn became land that the city would sell at a low monetary cost to poor immigrant farmers. Immigrants are from neighboring farming towns and from Columbia/Venezuela who sought asylum from their countries’ political turmoil.

The project proposal is designed to embed the culture within the community and the emphasis on its agrarian society. First, we would open the duct to become a canal and create sequential filters allowing the filtered water to be used for crops. Second, we would appropriate farming in relation to its terrain such as rice terrace farming on the surrounding mountainside to create a protective barrier against mudslides and flooding. Third we would create centers where farmers can sell their products and surround the market centers with affordable housing for immigrants seeking asylum.

PLAYA PROPOSAL

Architecture | Urban Design | Landscape Architecture

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign; AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino

Project Summary: Playa Proposal focuses on the playa basin Llano Estacado found surrounding Lubbock, Texas. Through our research we have discovered multiple factors that impede and contaminate our playa and its watershed. The area of our playa found pass Lubbock city limits has mostly been and is currently used for agriculture. Based on current city planning our site will be used for further city development (predominately housing) converting our peri-urban site to an urbanized one. To prevent further infrastructure that neglects the playa; we have established a set of strategies that remediate the playa and creates integrative relationships. Through our research of arrangements in both agriculture and housing we can create configurations that can be beneficial for each other and the playa. Considering water flow, we can strategically place urban development creating areas to cleanse and slow water runoff revitalizing the playa.
