We work with local communities to advocate for more creativity and collaboration through arts.
Our Goal Encourage the increase of housing, shops, restaurants, venues, and development through collaboration. The Depot District and the Arts District are the two notable districts with successful commercial activity, an example of what entertainment and the arts can bring to an area. We want our downtown to properly reflect the diverse culture the city embodies. We hope our exhibitions can inspire locals to connect and collaborate with one another to encourage more networking and opportunities for Lubbock properties

3843 50th St. Lubbock, TX 79413 Roles & Responsibilities Featured Artist | Volunteer Exhibited 8 pieces from high school work and self-taught/freelance work focusing on surrealism along with 14 other artists and 2 bands. Event Concept: We had the great fortune of collaborating with Ulabs, which is a community workspace designed to grow ideas and visions. Development: Together, we renovated the entire West wing of the Ulabs building, transforming an outdated storage space into a gallery. Actualization: We gutted out most of the building, patching and painting walls, installing lighting systems and re-furbishing or building enough furniture and displays to set the stage for a gallery. Result: The response from Lubbock artists filled up the gallery overnight. The art carefully installed, live music began as the doors opened to a community of over 200 attendees and brought an exhibition to life.

Alleys of Ave. J +Ave. K Lubbock, TX 79401 Roles & Responsibilities Featured Artist | Volunteer I was invited to display my artwork again and exhibited 7 pieces with 22 other artists and 4 bands. Event Concept: We set our eyes on two intersecting alleys located downtown between Avenues J & K converting desolate alleys into Urban Alleys. Development: Receiving the city’s approval for the event we began clearing alley ways, seeking out artists, musicians, food trucks, and sponsors. Actualization: On the morning of the event, April 1st, a rogue storm brought inches of rain, strong winds funneling through the alleyways, and even snow fall. Miraculously, the final rain clouds would begin to part just in time for the event. Result: Project Alley became a prototype for future events resulting in the annual music festivals “BlNKA JAM”.

Roles & Responsibilities Curator | Event planner | Sponsorship Assistant I was in charge of curating and reaching out to artists while instructing them through the process of submitting and exhibiting. I oversaw the previous artists; in addition, I sought out other artists by speaking at Texas Tech classrooms accumulating a total of 57 artists. I also assisted in fundraising by going to local businesses for sponsorship.
Event Concept: The Mattison Building is a semi abandoned building sits in the middle of the First Friday Art Trail and Depot District, which today, are the two most active and progressive areas in Downtown Lubbock. Development: Two months of meeting with city officials, resolving a list of safety concerns, and constant cleaning efforts, thanks to our volunteers, we slowly began stitching together a reimagined use for the upstairs office suites, which had lain vacant for decades. Actualization: The top of the Mattison transformed into an exhibition showcasing a series of live/ work studios, fitted with installations, art and creativity. Meanwhile, the bottom of the Mattison became galleries for paintings, sculptures, and projected visuals. The parking lot hosted food trucks, live music, mobile galleries by using trailers, & an aerialist performance. Result: On November 4th, 2016 The Mattison building was reactivated with over 500 attendees through a collaboration effort by talented individuals, sponsors, fire marshals, and building inspectors, whose work helped repurpose a single example of Downtown Lubbock’s many desolate buildings and empty spaces.

Roles & Responsibilities Exhibition Coordinator | Curator I was asked by Event Coordinator Terah Maher and Director of Communications and Outreach David Isern from TTU College of Architecture to set up an exhibition at the College of Architecture’s Huckabee student lounge on behalf of BLNKA.
Event Concept: We wanted to develop intermediate exhibitions to help promote future events. Development: Displayed research, promotion, and work from past BLNKA events held in Lubbock. Actualization: The exhibit consisted of work produced by students and locals with a wide variety of interests and techniques commonly applied to architecture, such as photography, graphic design, ceramics, 3d modeling, and painting. New sets of artwork rotated monthly. Result: Maintaining a relationship with TTU College of Architecture allowed for us to create new relationships with student led organizations. The Huckabee allowed for us to have a gallery space to showcase our artists’ work and showcasing our own process of past events.

LA VIDA
There is a population of creative and artistic personalities at Texas Tech, and now there is an innovation hub to help these people flourish.BLNKA, an exhibit that will showcase works from various artists and musicians at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, was created by a group of Tech students. Ana Garcia Merino, one of the founders of BLNKA, said the whole idea of the exhibit began from one conversation.“It started in my house,” she said. “We were just having a conversation with some architecture students who were also my roommates and there were about five of us. We were just talking about making an exhibition in our house.”Merino said she did not think BLNKA EXHIBIT SHOWCASES the exhibit would venture anywhere outside her house, but after the creation of a successful Instagram account STUDENT ARTWORK, TALENT exhibiting the works, she knew she and her team would have to find a larger space. They were soon introduced to the right people to make it happen.“We were very pressured in a way to have a decent place instead of just our house, so that was the time we The BLNKA exhibit, which was founded by Texas Tech students, opened started looking into different resources such as professors and people of its doors at its new location on Friday night and showcased artwork and that nature,” she said. “Then we came across one of the artists who told music created by students. The public first learned about the BLNKA exhibit us about ULABS, and we have been very happy working with them.”Leen through an Instagram account. Pedro Silva, a senior architecture major Borno, a representative from ULABS, said ULABS is a maker space.“You from San Antonio and one of the co-founders of the exhibit, came up with go to the library to read, a school to learn and ULABS to invent,” he said. the initial idea of the account, as well as a hash tag that got the information “We’re collaborating with Ana as the artists and young budding experts out to the public.“We talked about the name, and as soon as we put it of our future. Really, I just want a place for our college kids, and also the up, we started a hashtag,” he said. “We put some posts on our page and young kids graduating from high school, to also have a place.”The works individual pages with that hashtag to get people to go to that page. The of 20 artists and the music from four bands will be showcased at this next day, we started having people tagging their work.”Within a day, the exhibition. Merino said she did not want to make a statement about what Instagram account drew a great amount of interest, and Silva said several BLNKA is, but rather have the artists and the Lubbock community be the people were tagging their work and inquiring about the exhibit.“They were exhibition’s voice.“We want Lubbock to shape what we are about..Artists really interested in it, and after about two weeks of people asking about us musicians should make the statement about who we are.” and gaining interest about what the BLNKA Exhibit was really about, that’s when the popularity really took off,” he said. With the current AN INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION BY TEXAS TECH GRAD success of the Instagram account, Silva said he hopes there will STUDENTS EXPLORES OUR RELATIONSHIP TO SPACE be more events like this and for Lubbock to form an image of Last fall, five graduate students from the Texas Tech College of the exhibit in a positive way. “We Architecture created an installation called “Spectrolines” for the would like to have more events student-run art exhibition BLNKA. Each year, the show is held in a like this, and not just here with different location. In 2016, it was housed in the Mattison Building in FESTIVAL IN CENTER OF ULABS, but with other places,” downtown Lubbock. Wesley Thomas, Karla Murillo, Fabiola Vazquez, he said. “Since most of us are DOWNTOWN SATURDAY Patrick Walker, and Alex Littlepage created the installation in response seniors, we won’t be in Lubbock to a two-day Grasshopper workshop about dynamic surface relaxation much longer, so if we can reach The first BLNKA Jam: Urban Arts tools and minimal surfaces hosted by the Digital Design & Fabrication somewhere else, we can get Festival will take place from noon to 11 Program and Professor Dustin White. The result — designed, people to be more active & p.m. Saturday in downtown Lubbock fabricated, and installed over the course of three weeks — is a dramatic social in the art scene.” Jonathan at the intersection of Broadway and transformation of indoor space using cheap and simple materials. 500 E. Broadway Lubbock, TX 79401
Roles & Responsibilities Curator | Public Relations Coordinator | Sponsorship Coordinator I led fundraising, and created the pamphlet to inform our future sponsors about BLNKA. I was in charge of creating relations with Texas Tech University as well as keeping relations with our previous sponsors, while reaching out to new sponsors and artists who would like to participate. I Coordinated with school organizations from TTU, UNT and local Lubbock organizations. (For list of sponsors & organizations view map).
Event Concept: The Cliffhouse is located in East Lubbock an often neglected area by the city of Lubbock which we have wanted to incorporate in our events. Our fourth exhibition was hosted on a vacant property at 500 E Broadway, formerly known as the Cliff-house Restaurant and Parkview Lodge. With views across Mackenzie State Park from the first paved road through town, this preeminent destination for tourists and travelers of the 1950s, today, a deteriorating lot in isolation, most commonly known for its reputation as “Graffiti Park”. Development: We worked with Cliffhouse Project Director, Chimsee Hagy who is leading the revitalization efforts which are turning the abandoned complex into organic gardens, open studios, artist residencies and public venues to enhance the local arts community for East Lubbock. Actualization: We applied for an outdoor event with the Parks and Recreation Dept. to allow the venue to be un-changed and the graffiti to act as a palimpsest for installations, market, art, and stage. Result: We were able to bring Lubbock residents to reoccupy an abandoned venue for a one-day event that consisted over 300 attendees as well as bringing awareness to Chimsee Hagy’s visualization.

2.5 BLNKA X CASP PRESENTS: FABRICS
2.2.18
1106 5th St. Lubbock, TX 79401
Roles & Responsibilities Exhibition Director | Coordinator I applied for the 5th & J Exhibition Series sponsored by American National Bank at Charles Adams Studio Project and was accepted for February First Friday Art Trail. I created the exhibition on Feb. 2 as an Interactive Fashion Show, models were frozen in pose for 45min. Patrons were able to walk around the models to admire the garments as a “Live Sculpture Garden they could also talk to the designers and models after the show. I directed the event with the assistance of Vogue College of Cosmetology and Kelsey Linnartz president of the Hi Tech Fashion TTU Organization.
Event Concept: The exhibition was to present and integrate Fashion towards the BLNKA events. Development: I curated the art from 11 artists whom participated in the past as the backdrop display gallery for the Interactive Fashion Show. With the help of BLNKA members the event became a concert after the Interactive Fashion Show. Actualization: The exhibition was full with many patrons whom walked in with strollers and dogs on leashes causing the models to become an abruption on their path. We did not expect as many strollers and dogs however this garnered curiosity and boosted enthusiasm among the public to spread by word of mouth. Result: The event was over capacity we were commended by C.A.S.P. as the most visited exhibition that year and of recent times. As BLNKA we are an arts network we created relationships between designers and their models, photographers & artists whom were Texas Tech students and Lubbock locals.

Ave J+Broadway St. Lubbock, TX 79401
Roles & Responsibilities Operations Director: Curator| Fundraising Coordinator | Public Relations Coordinator | Event Coordinator | Community Outreach Coordinator I was lead Fundraising Coordinator and was able to outsource new sponsors to be a part of BLNKA contributing to our top sponsors. As Curator I was in charge of art installations, artists, and special performances. Coordinating the fashion show and art installations that took place in the alleyways to create Urban Alleys to help motivate growth of the arts community in a nearly inactive downtown. I also coordinated with theatre performances that took place at the Kress building, an abandoned building that was repurposed to become the stage for a haunting performance. As the Community Outreach Coordinator I outsourced local organizations, businesses, and food trucks to be a part of our Open Street Market. Event Concept: The idea is to help reconnect this area with its commercial activity and serve as a connection between the Depot District and the Lubbock Cultural District known for LHUCA, the First Friday Arts Trail, and the Buddy Holly Center. These two arts districts are examples of the economic growth that the arts community can bring to an area and how everyone benefits from extension of the overall experience in Lubbock. Development: BLNKA JAM ‘18 highlights this area which holds significance to Lubbock’s history of commercial success and current promise as the ideal area for urban redevelopment. If we look at the center of down-town, we can observe the few local businesses still active in this area. Actualization: The festival was from 12pm-11pm a full day of music and theatre performances on Broadway Street, the block’s alleyways hosted a series of art installations, fashion, preformances, and independent films. Followed by Avenue J which served a wide range of food trucks and open markets throughout the day. Closing sections of Broadway Street and Avenue J created a festival that engaged with the surrounding context, local businesses and abandoned properties. Result: The one-day annual festival will exhibit Lubbock’s rich art, architecture, music, fashion and film communities based in West Texas. We hope the festival will promote the local arts and encourage new investors and opportunities for these abandoned properties and surrounding context to continue the growth of urban development.

Roles & Responsibilities Operations Director: Curator Assistant | Fundraising Coordinator | Public Relations Coordinator | Event Coordinator | Community Outreach Coordinator I was lead Fundraising Coordinator and kept relations with previous sponsors as well as prospecting sponsors fundraising over half of our goal by myself. As Curator Assistant I was in charge of coordinating with theatre performances and art installations that took place in the alleyways to create Urban Alleys. As the Community Outreach Coordinator I kept relations with previous and introduced new local businesses to be a part of the BLNKA family. I outsourced food vendors and food trucks rotating them throughout the festival allowing vendors to come at their most convenient as well as creating excitement to the traffic flow through of our Open Street Market.
Event Concept: As our 2nd annual music festival we learned from previous circumstances which led our event planning. Development: We reduced the area by without using Avenue J. This allowed us to concentrate space and control traffic flow. We also allowed for more visitors through a free event to the public by focusing on sponsorship to pay off the event. Actualization: Closing sections of Broadway Street to create a festival that engages with the surrounding context, local businesses and abandoned properties. The one-day festival exhibited Lubbock’s rich art, architecture, music, fashion and film communities based in West Texas.
