The World Of Plants

Plants are living things. Plants produce the oxygen we breathe when making food. This process is called Photosynthesis. It is in the leaf that photosynthesis happens.

Photosynthesis

Plants take in carbon dioxide from the air, water from the soil and energy from the sunlight. These are the perfect ingredients to make oxygen.

Parts of a Plant Plants have roots, stems, leaves and some, have flowers. Roots offer support and through them, the plant absorbs all the nutrients and water from the soil.

The stem carries these nutrients to the rest of the plant.

The leaves make the food for the plant. The flowers make seeds to help the plant reproduce.

Roots Plants have different types of roots. Tap roots have one main root growing from where different smaller roots grow. They go deep in the ground and store nutrients within. For example carrots, sweet potato and turnip.

Fibrous roots are those who grow from the stem into the soil..

Onions are a good example of this type of root.

Prop roots are the type of roots that are half way exposed out of the soil. You can see in the picture below. Mangrove trees are an example of this type of root.

Adventitious roots grow from the leaf nodes. The stem will show different root growings. These types of plants can propagate through cuttings. For example wall climbing plants.

Aerial roots are the types of roots that do not need soil. These types of roots cling on to walls and other plants for support. For example orchids.

Plants We Eat Plants are part of our food source. When we eat lettuce or spinach we are eating the leaves of a plant.

Stems are also parts of a plant that we eat. For example, when we eat celery we are eating the stem of a plant.

Roots, like carrots and sweet potatoes are part of our food source. They hold a lot of nutrients that are important for our healthy growth.
