ENHANCE OBSTACLE RACING PERFORMANCE

01

DESIGN OBJECTIVE DESIGN A FOORWEAR THAT IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO ENHANCE PERFORMANCE IN OBSTACLE RACING

02

RESEARCH

03

THE RITE OF PASSAGE

A ritual or ceremony signifying an event in a person's life indicative of a transition from one stage to another, as from adolescence to adulthood.

Obstacle racing has become a modern rite of passage allowing normal people to face their fears, challenge their own limitations, pushing us to become stronger both physically and mentally.

04

“Winning is not the objective, but rather personal achievement and having a good time with friends and family is key - Joe Desena, Owner Co-founder of Spartan Race

05

Variety of obstacles require a flexible yet very durable shoe that gives traction in multiple terrains, won’t retain mud and dries fast. This will reduce the chances of injury as well as give athletes more confidence so they can focus on the race.

INSIGHTS & OPPORTUNITUES Insights

Opportunities

MULTI TERRAIN TRACTION

PERFORMANCE IN MUD

Improve performance in muddy conditions Prevent shoe loss by making front more hydrodynamic and introducing more ventilation into footprint, thus minimizing mud vacuum Improve foot wrapping by redesigning lacing system to provide tighter “taped” feel

PROTECTION & COMFORT

Protect the feet & increase comfort Prevent debris from getting inside shoe Faster drying time by improving water drainage and ventilation

09

Improve ankle support to prevent injury

PROTOTYPE

18

Experimentated with ligament like support shank in order to prevent over extension of muscle was well as provide impact protection.

Exploration for kit of parts for shoe attachment depending on terrain expected during race.

Exploration of outsole attachement for different terrain.

Exploration for drainage system in the midsole. Holes would help drain out water as well as provide impact support.

19

Using clay, carved out outsole pattern for molding in PU.

Use tape on last to create pattern for sewing.

Result of molded outsole

After testing outsole in real life, learned that this shape although very good for gripping it grabs on to mud and debris.

Using pattern created with the tape I roughly sewed upper to get a feel for shoe construction.

20

Mock up for ‘wrapping’ concept, which explored the connection between leg, foot and shoe. The idea was to use the wrap instead of shoe laces as this can also be used for wrapping the ankle area.

21

After making pattern using tape up method, covered the last in shrinking plastic mesh. This provided a structure for the exterior parts that would then be fused with the under mesh.

22

Tongue

inner upper structure

After making pattern using tape up method, created pattern for final shoe. Transfered pattern onto card stock paper to get a cleaner pattern to work with.
