Meet designer Randall Farabaugh and team from Arthur F. Schultz Co. A ttendees at the 2014 Erie Home & Garden Expo will get a glimpse into the mind of one of Erie’s foremost interior designers when they tour the Hawk Manufactured Feature Home expertly decorated by Randall Farabaugh of Arthur F. Schultz Co. Farabaugh will draw from more than 40 years of design experience to enhance the feature home, including five years as the head of outside design consultations at Arthur F. Schultz. According to Farabaugh, “Every job inspires me. I love to get inside people’s heads and give them the design that they hope to achieve.” His vision for this year’s model home is a fresh, modern feel that caters to a younger audience with natural fabrics, eco-friendly and green features, entirely American-made furniture, and an overall clean, simple design. Planning this contemporary look creates some unique challenges, especially because Farabaugh had to consider how thousands of people will navigate his design over the course of the four-day expo. Farabaugh will also be previewing his consultation and design process with the help of Eileen Grow as part of the “DIY Home Clinics” seminar series at the expo. He explained how he approaches each new design project by saying, “I ask a lot of questions and then try to recover what I feel

the client should have based on their thoughts. I’m quite happy to discuss what customers want, and I’m very honest with them.” His customers almost always have a personal opinion or preference, but they are also willing to trust his expertise and vision. The general public can get a taste of this consultation process by bringing in pictures, dimensions, or floor plans to share with Farabaugh at one of his seminars on Friday, March 14, at 5 p.m. or on Saturday, March 15, at noon. Anyone who attends one of his seminars will be entered to win a complimentary “Designer for a Day,” where the Arthur F. Schultz design team will go to the winner’s home and work with their existing items to re-create and revitalize a room. When it comes to specific room projects, Farabaugh’s favorite space to decorate in a home is a powder room. He said, “It is the smallest room in the house and can have the biggest impact. That to me is so much fun because you can really create an amazing sense of drama in such a small space.” Farabaugh will be showcasing one of his specialty bathroom designs as part of the 1,387-square-foot model home at the expo. For more information on his design expertise or the products and services offered by Arthur F. Schultz, please visit www.arthurfschultz.com.

HGTV’s design celebrity comes to Erie K

nown for her sunny smile and sharp eye, Taniya Nayak’s approachable take on interior design has won over everyone from rock stars to first time homebuyers. Taniya’s knack for bringing rich textures and unexpected finishes together with practical, real-life functionality has made her a go-to expert for decorating programs on major networks including HGTV and Food Network. She is currently a part of major franchises on both networks, hosting the HGTV series “House Hunters on Vacation” and as a featured designer on Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible.” Taniya is also the host of the new HGTV specials “Billion Dollar Block,” which premiered in October 2012. Earlier in 2012, Taniya launched her first collection of home products, Taniya Nayak Lighting, available exclusively via www.Wayfair. com. Born in India and raised in Boston, Taniya’s design style is strongly influenced by her creative family, especially her father, a talented architect. Shortly after attending Boston Architectural College for her master’s in Interior Design, Taniya’s design style and upbeat personality landed her first television gig on ABC Family’s Knock First. Taniya was one of four designers

and co-hosts of the hit show, geared toward hip, ambitious teens. She then made the move to HGTV as a designer on the edgy series “FreeStyle,” encouraging homeowners to get imaginative with items they already owned. Taniya is a regular on HGTV mainstays like “Designed to Sell,” “Showdown,” “Bang for Your Buck” and throughout HGTV.com. Taniya can also be seen on Robert Irvine’s Food Network series, “Restaurant Impossible,” where she utilizes her design prowess to rescue and transform suffering restaurants. After filming two episodes last season, Taniya is now a recurring character in the show’s new season, currently airing. Married to Brian O’Donnell, a successful restaurateur in Boston, Taniya’s personal life as both an interior designer and a restaurant industry insider is the perfect parallel to her multifaceted design role in the television realm. With knockout shows on both the Food Network and HGTV, Taniya has quickly become a respected and prominent figure in television’s interior design world. Meet Taniya at this year’s Erie Home & Garden Expo. She will be giving seminars on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Taniya is sponsored by the Erie Federal Credit Union.

T

he color of your home’s exterior can really make or break its curb appeal. And experts say that many homeowners are gazing upward to their roofs to make a statement. “Whether you go with a timeless look or you shake things up with something more modern, the color of your roof can really be an area for true selfexpression,” says national color expert Kate Smith, of Color Marketing Group and owner of Sensational

Be trendy Consider colors that are gaining in popularity in today’s roofs. Those include shades of green, clay and terracotta.

setting of the home. For example, terracotta or clay colors are well-suited for a Mediterranean style home. Green roofs work well in wooded settings or can easily “soften” the look of a home in an exposed location.

Customize If you can’t find the roofing color that perfectly meets your needs, don’t stress. Some roofing companies, such as DaVinci roofscapes can custom create any color imaginable.

Look back Bright colored roofs historically were quite common. A range of reds, greens and even golds were used on all styles of homes in the past.
