OUTLOOK
There was no secret to the Oil City’s success in 2018. Christian Cole was going to run the ball and run it a lot. Opponents knew it was coming, and they still couldn’t stop him. Cole became the first rusher in District 10 history to rush for 3,000 yards in a season as the Oilers won their second D-10 championship in program history with a thrilling 14-12 win over General McLane.
Cole ran for 3,252 yards and 46 touchdowns. His huge senior season came behind a line full of all-region selections in Mario Fontanazza, Dasan Manross and Dylan Salsgiver. Fontanazza is the lone returnee in that group and will be counted on as a leader after a big sophomore season.
The Oilers also bring back quarterback Holden Stahl along with running backs Noah Petro, Brayden Crocker and Cam Russell. Petro ran for 707 yards and five TDs on 79 carries, and Russell ran for 221 yards. A.J. Angros is a returning tight end, and Caleb Bish is back at split end.
Crocker had a breakout freshman season with 122 tackles and four sacks, but the Oilers will have to replace C.J. Shreffler (115 tackles) and Cole (114) on defense. Petro was named to the all-region first team as a linebacker with 100 tackles, and Crocker was voted to the second team as a linebacker.
Oil City could also receive contributions from Sean Stack, Dakota Cole, Dausan Heeter, J.T. Stahlman and Zach Keifer.
Oil City put together a 10-2 season last fall, including a D-10 title and an appearance in the PIAA playoffs. The Oilers did it behind one of the greatest seasons in D-10 history for a running back. Oil City returns seven starters on both sides of the ball, but replacing Cole won’t be easy. There might be some teams that count out the Oilers because of Cole’s graduation, but Oil City has an experienced team that is ready to compete right away.
