Specially chosen Costaleros carry the paso – a magnificent but very heavy statue of the Virgen del Carmen – to La Ermita, and they are followed by the whole village, and as many expats and holidaymakers who care to join in with respect. The Algorfenos carry bamboo staves and sport Panama hats and blue neckerchiefs. It’s an awe-inspiring and intensely moving sight to see everyone making their way to La Ermita, with that typical Spanish mix of rever-
