These days, the chapel hosts music concerts and various community events, and it plays a leading role in the fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen, in mid July. Once again, it’s at the heart of spiritual and community life in Algorfa. On the first day of the fiesta, there is a Romeria to take the Virgen ‘home’ to La Ermita from the church in the Plaza de Espana. If you’re wondering what a Romeria is, it’s a short pilgrimage, usually to a rural or mountain retreat. Then there is a mass, and a day of celebrations, before the Virgen is carried back to the church in the village. Specially chosen Costaleros carry the paso – a magnificent but very heavy statue of the Virgen del Carmen – to La Ermita, and they are followed by the whole village, and as many expats and holidaymakers who care to join in with respect. The Algorfenos carry bamboo staves and sport Panama hats and blue neckerchiefs. It’s an awe-inspiring and intensely moving sight to see everyone making their way to La Ermita, with that typical Spanish mix of rever-
