Villajoyosa The Joyful Town

By Russ Pearce Located just 32km north of Alicante, is Villajoyosa the happiest town in Spain? It’s name suggests so. Villajoyosa translates into English as Joyful Town. There is every reason to think this could be an accurate nomenclature. It is, after all, the home of Valor chocolate. You too can make yourself happy by visiting their museum and factory in the town. English tours are available at 11.00 and 16.00 during the week, but only at 11.00 on Saturdays and they are closed on Sundays. It’s free and there’s no need to book. Just make your way to the factory gates a few minutes before the tour is due to begin and a guide will meet you by the giant chocolate bar walls of the waiting area. Just inside the gates stands a vintage car decorated in old fashioned Valor livery. You’ll be led alongside the ultra-modern factory to the museum. The smell is amazing! Once inside the museum you’ll sit down, the lights will dim, and a 10 minute video will tell you all about the history of both chocolate and the company. After that your mouth will already be watering at the prospect of some free samples, but you’ll have to wait a while! Next up is the museum itself. Inside there are all sorts of historical artefacts from the original chocolate-making machinery through to advertising posters and chocolate wrappers. There are many photographs showing off the history of Valor, including some of the then

8

“...it’s a chocoholic’s dream!” Prince Felipe’s visit in 2006 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of chocolate in the town. You’ll even get the chance to hold ground chocolate beans in your hands and let the gorgeous smell permeate through your entire being. From there you will be taken into the factory. Put your camera away now as no photography is allowed for the rest of the tour. You’ll be led up the stairs to the narrow glass walled walkway from where you can see the factory floor in action. (I say action, but a visit on a Saturday when some of the machinery was being replaced meant that I didn’t see a lot of action!) The sheer quantity of chocolate goodies being packed into boxes is staggering. Your penultimate stop will be a small gallery with chocolate sculptures. They are kept behind glass cases to prevent the more curious tourist from testing to see that they are really made from chocolate. There you will also see the complete history of Valor chocolate wrappers. It’s very interesting to see how the designs have changed over the years. Personally I think the vintage wrappers would still sell today. Finally you’ll be led to the shop. In there you can buy all sorts of goodies. More importantly though, there are free samples. High cocoa content chocolate, sugar-free chocolate, mint chocolate, double mint chocolate, orange chocolate - it’s a chocoholic’s dream!! If your visit to the museum hasn’t completely satisfied your sweet tooth then head to the Valor café at the top of the travelator which saves your legs walking up the hill from the seafront. The chocolate and churros are to die for, but there is an extensive chocolate menu for you to choose from. Don’t wait. Go now before other greedy tourists have polished off the free samples!! It’s Fiesta Time! By Sandra Piddock

Around Algorfa

It’s July, and in Algorfa – and many other villages and towns in Spain – that means it’s Patronal Festival time, or Dia de Virgen del Carmen. Traditionally, the Virgen del Carmen looks after fishermen, and many Spanish people won’t swim in the sea until after July 16th. Algorfa may be around 10 miles inland, but the Ermita Chapel on the outskirts ofthe village is dedicated to the Virgen, and a week to 10 days of partying is held every year in Algorfa to mark the occasion. As is the way in Spain, the programme of events doesn’t come out until around a week before the festivities commence, so I can’t report on the 2016 programme, but I can tell you all about the 2015 fiesta, to whet your appetite for this year’s celebrations. So, if you’re in the Algorfa area between 9th and 17th July, this is the sort of thing you can look forward to. The fiesta week opens with the coronation of the Fiesta Queens, accompanied by music and dancing. On the Sunday before 16th, there is what many Algorfenos class as the highlight of the festival – the Romeria. A Romeria is a pilgrimage, often involving animals as well as people, and of course food – all Spanish fiestas involve food! For various reasons, Tony and I had never managed to be in Algorfa during fiesta week, but last year we were, and our friend Samantha Biddles – whose family were the first British residents to settle in Algorfa back in 1999 – said we should be sure to go to the Romeria. It meant an early start, but we were so glad we made the effort. Just about everyone in the village turned out, with their pilgrims’ staffs, neckerchiefs and Panama hats, to accompany the Virgen from the parish church in the Plaza de Espana to her spiritual home in the Ermita Chapel. And there were animals too – dogs and horses. It was such a moving experience to follow the procession, even though we’re not particularly religious, and then there was a mass, followed by a breakfast of sardines, bread and beer – cooked by the men, as usually happens at fiestas. In the afternoon following the Romeria, there’s a paella competition, and we felt

10

“...I was so impressed with my first Algorfa Fiesta Week,” privileged to be included in the tasting, because this really is a local affair. Through the week, there are various events for all the family – different every year, as there is a different Fiesta Committee every year. It all builds up to Dia de Virgen del Carmen, when there is a mass and solemn parade, followed by a spectacular firework display and an evening of typically Spanish entertainment. In 2015, fiesta week finished up with a Mexican party night, complete with Mariachi band and chilli con carne, and a carnival night where all the local clubs, businesses and associations turned out dressed to kill. The main highlights for us were the Egyptian dancers and the Pirates, and the Ayuntamiento thoughtfully provided plastic chairs along the carnival route for the spectators, then set up a record for collecting said chairs as they followed the last float around the route. Following a word from the wise, we positioned ourselves right outside Bar Tropicana on Calle Mayor. Not only did we have a fantastic view of the procession, we were also handy for refreshments, which was quite handy, as it took the procession more than two hours to wend its way around the village! I was so impressed with my first Algorfa Fiesta Week, it’s now firmly in the diary for this year, and every year. To think that a small village with a population of around 4,000 can mount such a fantastic fiesta week is both staggering and humbling, and I never intend to miss out on it again. 2016’s Fiesta Week will kick off on Saturday 9th July at 10.30 am with a Chupinazo – or ‘Big Bang.’ It’s yet another first for Algorfa – who hosted their first ever Sevillana Fiesta in April 2016. I’m not sure exactly what will be involved, although we’re told there’ll be ‘Water, foam, fun and free beer and soft drinks.’ I can’t wait! Maybe we’ll see you there, if you’re Around Algorfa from 9th – 17th July. Felices fiestas a todos!

WHAT´S HAPPENING LOCALLY

with Jax Lawson

This issue is the first anniversary of my gig guide in All Abroad. Like the American postal system I have worked through rain and snow, illness and heat to bring as comprehensive gig guide as possible. It has been an eventful year and the page, and indeed the magazine has an ever growing readership. I would like to thank all the staff at All Abroad and of course all the readers and contributors for giving a huge boost to live entertainment. I am pleased to announce that Diana Ross Tribute, Celena Deans will be returning to Spain for a short working holiday. She will only be appearing twice – at Legends on 9th July and then on 13th at The Club Quesada. Hot Chocolate’s Ex Lead singer Greg Bannis is also returning to Spain this month. Greg regularly tours Europe to vast audiences and even after 16 years touring the world with mega group Hot Chocolate, still likes to connect with the audience on a one to one basis. He can be found at various venues from July 27th at The Club Quesada, where he will be appearing for a premiere performance with Glenroy Oakley from Greyhound. Tickets are now on sale from www.lrshows.com. Greg will be appearing in venues from Benidorm to La Manga and is even doing a boat party. Having just returned from touring Germany to audiences of over 10,000 he is looking forward to the Spanish sunshine and welcoming Hot Chocolate fans. Details of all his tour dates can be found on Facebook or by emailing me. Greg is at the top of his profession with no airs or graces, just a love for performing to real people. It takes a very astute person to realise that without support from fans their work has no value. We all like to be appreciated and that is why I am taking the time to say thank you to all the readers of this page because without you it wouldn’t exist. If you would like your events in this guide, they are FREE. Just email me the details to letsrockshowslive@gmail.com. To book acts please go to my new site www.jaxlawson.com Shows dates can be found on www.lrshows.com Love life, love music and support your venues and acts.
