The local climate The average temperature in January is 11.5 °C (52.5 °F), and in August it is 26 °C (79 °F). The amount of sunshine in Alicante is very good in summer, when clear skies prevail, but it is also good in the other seasons: there’s an average of 6 hours of sunshine per day even in January, and 7 in February. The rains are scarce, only 285 millimetres (11.2 inches) per year; in particular, winter is drier than it normally is in Mediterranean climates, while in summer (as is normal) it almost never rains. Due to the scarcity of rainfall, the landscape is arid. The days with rain are particularly rare, but when it rains it can rain a lot, and sometimes the rains may be intense and concentrated, in time causing floods.

LOVERS OF GRAN ALACANT

Locals Chris and Laura from Gran Alacant Properties tell us why the live and work in Gran Alacant

“Who wouldn’t want to live in Gran Alacant?” That was Chris’ answer to my opening question when I met up with him to find out a little bit about Gran Alacant Properties and the people behind it. Chris and his wife Laura run the estate agency behind the well-known ‘I love Gran Alacant’ logo that you will have seen around the area. Since 2006, Gran Alacant Properties has been selling new builds as well as resale properties and placing mortgages for their buyers. Laura, an American with a Spanish mother, and Chris, who originates from Cardiff but has been in Spain over 30 years, went on to answer my question as to why they chose Gran Alacant to live by repeating their previous answer. “Who wouldn’t want to live here? We have everything on our doorstep; a modern airport close by, two wonderful and historic cities within 20 minutes and some of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca!” They have a good point, and their passion for the area is clear as they go on to tell me how much they enjoy the work they do helping people begin a new phase of their life in Gran Alacant. “Most of the time, we are very lucky to be able to work with people at a happy moment in their lives. They are buying a long

+34 966 699 441

dreamed about holiday home in Spain or they are preparing to relocate to Spain and enjoy retirement in the sun.” With their knowledge of the region (both speak Spanish which helps) and passion for the area, they have helped hundreds of people settle in Gran Alacant and made sure that their new life in Spain gets off to the smoothest of starts. The couple are heavily involved in local activities too. Gran Alacant Properties run and sponsor the popular Gran Alacant Darts League and Laura is the current president of ASPETGA, the local pet owners’ association. In addition, they give support and sponsorship to many others including Santa Pola’s football club F.C. Bahia Santa Pola including ladies and youth football tournaments, the Gran Alacant Walking Football for over 50´s, Santuario Cuatro Patas and more. It’s surprising the couple have time to do anything else! Looking forward Chris, who lived all over Spain before settling in Gran Alacant, told me that they hope to continue growing as a business and supporting as many local causes as they can. “Investing in the community where we live and do business helps to make Gran Alacant a better place for all of us.” If you’re passing their office in the Carabassi Centre then pop in and say hello to two locals who love where they live and what they do; their passion for the life in Gran Alacant is infectious.

GA SCHOOL WINS NEW AWARD FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION The CEIP Vicenta Ruso has won the Giner de los Rios prize, worth 15,000 euros, convened by the Ministry of Education. The project for which they have won the award is called ‘Integra Sano’, which in the Esperanto language means ‘Integral Health’. The coordinator of the work is Alfredo Oteros López who, along with several teachers at the school, has carried out a series of activities which included sports events, a healthy breakfast, cycle trips, yoga, self-motivation, or organic farming . The purpose of this project is to instil in students a global vision of health that transcends the purely physical and also encompassing the psychic, social, mental and environmental. The activities that have been carried out have always revolved around four areas that were distinguished by four different colours. Red was intended for physical health, purple for mental health, blue for social health, and green for environmental health. In addition, each activity was focused on one of the three levels of prevention: primary prevention consisted of avoiding the appearance of the problem; in high school they detected the problem in early stages; while in the tertiary they treated the problem once it had been detected so that it would not progress.

Gran Alacant News

No risk or cost for you – YOU ONLY PAY IF WE WIN

Businesses in Gran Alacant are calling on the town hall to put Gran Alacant on the map and put signs on the N332 directing people to the area and being clear to passers by that Gran Alacant is not just a ‘big housing estate’ as one visitor to the area thought until he saw what we have here. Currently the signs into Gran Alacant are few and far between and those that do exist are confusing. Take the change of the entrance sign to GA which was changed to read in large font ‘SANTA POLA’ with ‘Gran Alacant urbanisation’ written in a much smaller font underneath. And the road signs on the N332 say the same ‘Gran Alacant urbanisations.` Nothing about commercial centres (yes you can see the GA Centre from the main road but there are many more businesses all over GA). Outside of Gran Alacant there is just one sign that actually says ‘Gran Alacant’ with the ‘urbanisations’ suffix or ‘Santa Pola’ stamped above it. Do you know where it is? Take a look at the photo to see if you recognise where it is and let us know on Facebook or by email. When I first moved to the area the entrance, next to the bridge, had the words ‘Gran Alacant’ in large white letters and with greenery (I’m no gardener) growing on them. It looked great, and tasteful especially when you compare it to the current

one which looks like an advertising hoarding. For some reason the council in Santa Pola seem to be scared that people will mention the words ‘Gran Alacant’ and forget that it is officially ‘in’ Santa Pola, hence the new entry signs etc. they might as well climbed to the top of the cliff and stuck a flag in it. Nowhere else in Santa Pola do they do that, Playa Lisa, Gran Playa or del Este all have their own signs without having ‘urbanisations’ or even ‘apartments’ written after them. It’s time to tell me people what we have in GA and bring people in from outside to enjoy the area and help local businesses. Many people who haven’t been to GA have the same opinion as the man at the top of this article and the town hall needs to put GA on the map, and not just as a colony of Santa Pola.

FEATHERS - FINDING THEM & COLOUR MEANINGS Finding a white feather in an unusual place is known as the ‘calling cards of the angels’. When a feather literally falls at your feet, many believe that the angels are sending you the feather as confirmation that they’ve heard your prayers which will be answered within divine timing.

People through history from different cultures such as The Native Americans, Aborigines and Celtics have believed for centuries that there are mystical and magical meanings behind birds and feathers. Native Americans for example used to make their headdresses with feathers and when worn, they were seen as a sacred connection to the divine. The reason for this was, when you look at a feather, there is a shaft running up the centre of the feather which looks like a stalk. The idea is that the relevant person’s prayers go up through the hollow shaft of the stalk to God, and his blessings are then sent down through the hollow shaft and used as a kind of channel (connection to the divine). I’m asked a lot about different coloured feathers as not each feather you’ll find will be white. So I have written a short description below. I hope you find it useful. White White feathers are the most common, and certainly the colour that most people believe are linked to the angels and spirit. Finding one means that the angels are letting you know your loved one in the afterlife is safe, and at peace. They also stand for protection, strength and hope. Pink The colour pink denotes love, so this is what finding a pink feather means. Pure love is descending from above, wrapping you in unconditional love, harmony, faith and inspiration. Red Finding a red feather represents courage, good fortune, security, passion and strength.

Blue The colour blue represents Communication, connection to Spirit/Psychic Awareness, Archangel Michael, Peace and Inspiration. Also means that you may need to listen! Purple A purple feather denotes all things spiritual, Universal Consciousness, Heightened spiritual growth. Yellow Joy, cheerfulness, new knowledge, mental alertness. The sun about to come out in your life. Green Finding a green feather is a very lucky omen! Promoting prosperity, inner growth, health, success, Mother Nature, animals. Black Mystical wisdom, protection, a new adventure, warning to be more aware of people around you, putting something into action, letting go of past hurts, moving on, forgiveness, letting go. Orange Physical love, creativity, energy, success, new ideas/opportunities. Grey A grey feather denotes peace, and may have been sent to ease your pain and suffering and to let you know there is a smoother road ahead. As grey feathers also symbolise neutrality, it may mean that there may not be an easy answer to a question that has been bothering you. Brown Grounding stability, friendship, home-life, respect.

IS YOUR MARRIAGE IN DIFFICULTIES?

We have the idea that marriage would be a dream, that it would be sheer bliss to have a lifelong partner to share everything with and grow old with in harmony…….that is what some of us have, no doubt. However, more and more couples are finding the road to married bliss more difficult to stay on than they originally thought!! Bearing in mind that no one is very likely to marry someone they don’t want to……..what goes wrong? What happens to change things?? If we marry someone because we think they are the best thing since sliced bread (!) where did it all change? More importantly WHY did it all change?? Are YOU still the same person? Is your partner still the same person? How come you are feeling differently about things nowadays……..shouldn’t it all be getting better, the longer you are together? In a perfect world, maybe, but we don’t live in a perfect world do we? However, there are usually solutions we may not have thought of, so lets consider some of those things…. yes? Ask yourself if there is anything worth working at…? Anything worth saving? If so, there are some things to explore. Marriage is about meeting each others needs……are we doing that??? If not, why not? It must have been the pattern at one time if you ever felt fulfilled in the relationship, so why did we stop doing that? Do we realise that when we choose to behave in a particular way we are also choosing the consequences?? Cause and effect, BIG TIME!!!!! Marriage is not about being on an ego trip and it is not about a power struggle. If marriage has turned into that, ask yourself why? Marriage

By Violet King

was all about love, companionship and sharing……have those words disappeared from your relationship? Can you bring them back? The answer is YES, but you have to WANT to. Do you know what your needs are? Do you know what the needs of your partner are?? When you have the answers to that question, set goals and work towards meeting those needs….every one of those needs is a goal to meet. Sometimes in life to get what you need you have to give what you have. Read that again!! So many of us “shut up shop” and stop giving. What can be the only possible result there?? Frustration, resentment, withdrawal, closure…….. then we go on, living from day to day trapped in a relationship that is meaningless and unfulfilling. For those of you who have read my articles before you must know what I am going to say! …….YOU are in control! You can make or break any situation in your life by the way you handle it and by the way you react towards it. If something is not working the way you think it should, ask yourself if you are being realistic? If not, change the goalposts! Stop thinking its your way or the highway!!….there are TWO of you in this situation, not just one!! Two points of view, two personalities to take into consideration. Achieving change and success in this may be hard, but its not impossible! Its up to you to evaluate the situation you are in and do what you can to make a difference.

Till the next time! Take care!

The movie is set to be directed by Jeremy Saulnier who has hits such as Green Room, Blue Ruin, Murder Party and Putty Hill under his belt so he’s no stranger to the genre. The Hollow (Season 1) Release Date: June 8th, 2018 First announced back in October 2016, this is one of six new kids series announced for the streaming service. According to Netflix: ‘In The Hollow, strangers-turned-friends scavenge through a surreal mystery world as they desperately search for a way back home.’ Alex Strangelove Release Date: June 8th, 2018 Although the movie has actually already released, it was only to select audiences and will be arriving on Netflix under the Original banner on June 8th. If you’re looking for more information about the special, check out our preview. The Angel (Movie) Release Date: June 15th, 2018 Although not the first Isreali production for Netflix, this is one of the most expensive purchases from Netflix in the region. Bringing GA’s Civil War history to life The local Executive draws up a project to rehabilitate a set of barracks from the 1930s to use them as an environmental centre Change of use. The town hall in Santa Pola has drafted a project to transform three abandoned barracks that were dormitories and showers of soldiers during the civil war into an environmental centre. The first phase will begin at the end of the year with municipal investment and possible help from the Provincial Government. After the long trip along the path to the Santa Pola lighthouse many have seen the vestiges of what was once a military barracks. However, those who have seen them or not may not have taken much notice of them before.

Less than a kilometre from the lighthouse, on the right, and in the middle of nowhere, there are three dilapidated buildings in a half ruinous state and to which have been added that scourge of modern times; graffiti on their walls. At first glance they are ruins without any value, but in a few months they could change their appearance. The town council has drafted a preliminary project to fully rehabilitate these buildings into a centre of interpretation about the whole of the civil war, the Cape and the Santa Pola mountain range. The first phase of the plan could begin at the end of the year and would focus on the west pavilion, the largest, which during the Spanish Civil War served as a military refreshment area with showers, kitchen, sink and a separate well only a few meters away .

N332 BLAZE – 20,000 SQUARE METRES BURNS Over 20,000 square metres of trees and scrub land were burned alongside the N332 on the 24th of May forcing the road to be closed and traffic diverted inland or along the narrow coast road from Santa Pola to Gran Alacant. Four fire trucks were on the scene along with the police and a special fire-fighting plane was drafted in to help douse the flames. The blaze crossed one side of the N332 to the other sparking fears in the services of a more wide-spread problem however, after an hour the flames had been reduced sufficiently to allow the road to reopen.

Being bilingual or a musician means your brain is more efficient The study analysed brain activity while participants completed simple tasks If you’ve taken the time to learn music or to speak another language, you’ve also trained your brain into being more efficient, according to a new study. Researchers at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute found that musicians and people who are bilingual utilised fewer brain resources when completing a working memory task. According to the study, published in the journal, Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, people with either a musical or bilingual background activated different brain networks and showed less brain activity while completing a task than peo-

ple who only spoke one language or didn’t have formal music training. Of the findings, Dr Claude Alain, one of the paper’s authors who works as a senior scientist at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute and a professor at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Medical Science, said: “These findings show that musicians and bilinguals require less effort to perform the same task, which could also protect them against cognitive decline and delay the onset of dementia. “Our results also demonstrated that a person’s experiences, whether it’s learning how to play a musical instrument or another language, can shape how the brain functions and which networks are used.”

THE STREET WITH NO PAINT Residents in one of Gran Alacant's streets are still waiting for the white lines and crossings to be painted on their road after it was resurfaced by the town council...they have been waiting 2 years! Calle Orden del Corintio, which is the residential road that runs from the Chinese Bazaar at the top of Cardiac Hill to the Unide Supermarket. In fact the first crossroads has no signs at all and although the road heading down hill (Calle Rio Tajo) is supposed to have give way signs, there are none. Accidents have happened there and at the next crossroads too and residents fear more if the signs and street markings aren't done soon.

ALICANTE AIRPORT DISUSED TERMINAL TO BECOME OFFICES

been published, the department of the Ministry of Public Works plans to invest 71,000 euros in the project to adapt the building to its new use. The T1 will remain out of service at least for the time being.

BREXIT PETITION FOR BRITS IN SPAIN

Airport has new idea for T2 seven years after closing the building Alicante-Elche airport has new plans after deciding what it is going to do with Terminal 2, which has been closed since the new extended airport was put into operation in 2011. The intention for the airport is to redesign the building, currently not in use, to turn it into office spaces. The idea was first proposed in a meeting with the press held in December. Terminal 2 is not completely disused, but when it was closed to the public it began to be used for general aviation (private jets, small planes) and for internal services at the airport. However, the terminal management now wants to convert this space into offices, both for their own use and to allocate them for rent. If they do that they will create free space in the new terminal, where there are hardly any areas left to be exploited. Indeed, shortly they will be adding more passport filters which will take up quite a bit more of the much needed room in the airport. At first, the idea was to turn terminal 1 into offices, which is also closed, but finally Aena has opted to convert part of terminal 2, which will coexist with general aviation services in the same building. According to the bidding document, which has just

Giles Tremlett and William Chislett are calling for the Spanish government to grant dual nationality for Brits who have resided in Spain for more than 10 years. The petition is simple they say, adding “As a result of the dramatic situation in which we find ourselves after Brexit, they are urging the Spanish government to be generous to the country’s long-standing British community. Many of us could not vote in the Brexit referendum, so the decision has been imposed on us against our will.” Allowing dual nationality for those who have lived a long time in Spain requires a change in Spanish legislation, but it would not be the first time this has happened. In 2015, for example, the government of Mariano Rajoy offered double nationality to Sephardic Jews (the descendants of Jews expelled from Spain in 1492). Spaniards resident in the UK already enjoy the right to joint nationality (unlike their counterparts in Spain) and Germany is considering making a similar offer to Britons who live there. If you are interest go to: www.change.org and search ‘Dual nationality’.

LOOKING FOR A FAMILY STUDENT EXCHANGE BETWEEN SPAIN AND THE UK :

I’m a translator at the University of Alicante, Spain, and a Spanish mother of a teenager and I’d love to find a family in the UK for my son to stay for 15 days. If you are a native speaker of English and you have a teen (mine is 15) who is learning Spanish (or know of someone else’s) we can make a deal: I’ll send you my son for 15 days to your home in the UK and in return, you’ll send me yours here in Spain. This would be an amazing experience. Of course, we’ll need to make some time to get to know each other a little bit and start building a friendship to gain confidence and create a favourable atmosphere for the teenagers to be willing to start a friendship. If this is something that you’d love, please, send me a message. If not, circulate this information until it reaches the right people/family. Thank you for your collaboration! Gemma and her family are long term friends of us at GA News and we’ll happily supply a reference for her for anyone interested. Contact Gemma at, gemma.alonso@gcloud.ua.es

BEING SELF-EMPLOYED IN SPAIN In Spain working as an “autonomo” is the equivalent of going freelance or self-employed, the same term and conditions are also applied to employees working in small businesses. Social Security Anyone who is earning money but is not employed by a company is legally obliged to register at the nearest Social Security office and pay a monthly contribution of approximately 275€ per month. Income tax and IVA (VAT) is also payable on any monies earned. (If earnings are sporadic, it may be possible to become exempt from paying Social Security fees). If you are working for a business you will have a contract, but if you invoice the company for your services, you must register as autonomo. If you do not register as autonomo, you won’t be able to provide clients with invoices, and in turn, they will be unable to deduct the expense against

their tax return. IVA (VAT) In Spain there is no IVA threshold, which means that no matter how small the sum, all businesses and freelance workers must charge IVA. This can only be done for self-employed workers if they are registered as autonomo. How to register It isn’t necessary to show any sort of business plan or qualifications. Registration involves registering to pay tax (Agencia Tributaria) and social security. (Regimen Especial de Trabajadores Autonomos RETA) Depending on the type of business, there could be other steps which need to be taken such as applying for a “licencia de apertura” (business license) from the town hall, which will ensure that the business will operate in accordance with local by-laws and business practices etc.

BREXIT NEWS FROM THE BRITISH EMBASSY

Ever since the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union nearly two years ago, the Prime Minister Theresa May has been clear that while we are leaving the EU, we are not leaving Europe. As long-time allies who enjoy close cultural, economic and security ties, we share with our neighbours on the continent not only shared experiences of the past and similar challenges in the present – but a whole range of opportunities together in the future as well. In order to seize these new opportunities and minimise the risks however, we must forge a consensus that sees us work together in a new era of co-operation and shared prosperity between the United Kingdom and our European partners – such as Spain. That is why I am in Madrid today: to focus on the deep bilateral relationship between the UK and Spain; to celebrate and champion our people-to-people links; and to make clear our wish to strengthen this relationship further after the UK has left the EU. I understand that many people in Spain do not wish to see the UK leave the EU, an organisation we know they value dearly. But while I campaigned hard to remain in the EU, I recognise that the people in the UK took a democratic decision to leave and that vote must be respected: there will be no second referendum on our membership. Instead, the priority now is for both sides to focus our energies on agreeing a future relationship that recognises the common bonds and ties that we have built up over decades. We have already made significant progress in negotiations so far, with both sides determined to prioritise the needs of both of our peoples. At the end of last year, we agreed key elements of our withdrawal, such as ensuring that the 300,000 British people living in Spain – and the almost 200,000 Spanish citizens in the UK – retain the right to live and work in each other’s country as they do now. And in March, we reached agreement on an implementation period, giving families and businesses the certainty and clarity they deserve. The path ahead, however, is not a simple one: we are approaching some crucial moments in our negotiations. But where there are challenges to overcome, we are confident that, by adopting a spirit of compromise and focus, we can find a way forward together that is to the benefit and shared prosperity of both ourselves and the European Union.

Three quarters of a million Brits now live in EU countries outside of the UK and Ireland, and more than a third of these have chosen Spain as their home away from home. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have found that Spain is still the main destination for British citizens living abroad, particularly among the retiring generation, with 37% of Brits abroad living there – 41% of which are aged 65 and above. There are a total of 293,500 of us now living in Spain, attracted by the weather, leisure opportunities and Mediterranean lifestyle that many see as the ultimate goal after retirement, although two-thirds of Brits living in the EU outside Britain are of working age between 15-64. The attractions of Spain Marc Pritchard, sales and marketing director of Taylor Wimpey Espana, said: “Spain has so much to offer those who are retired or approaching retirement. The Mediterranean climate and diet are well suited to those looking for a healthy lifestyle, while the medical system here is also superb.

The property market in Spain has been performing strongly since the beginning of this year, with prices increasing by 3.8% between the first quarter of 2017 and the first quarter of 2018, according to a house price index from Tinsa. The growth was fairly mixed across the country, with the capital Madrid seeing prices soar by 17% over the year, while they rose by 14.7% in the popular tourist destination of Palma de Mallorca. Barcelona, situated on the east coast which is a top destination for British expats, saw price growth of 11%. However, three areas recorded slight house price falls, with prices in Castilla-La Mancha down by 1.3%, Extremadura down by 0.6% and Galicia down by 0.1%. Strong market for international buyers One estate agent, Lucas Fox, said that 66% of all its house sales in 2017 were to international buyers, 10% of which were from the UK – which was very similar to the level seen in 2016 and proof that issues such as Brexit are not a deterrent to most.

Does cultural knowledge beat language ability in international companies?

Learning the local language might seem an obvious goal for anyone moving abroad. But in an increasingly globalised world, whether this is an effective use of time is increasingly up for debate. Growing numbers of multinationals and start-ups are adopting English as their official company language, even if they’re not based in an English-speaking nation. And internationally, millennials seem to have a much higher tolerance for using the global language than older generations, meaning it’s potentially easier to socialise with young locals by speaking English than in the past. The British Council estimates that by 2020, two billion people will be using it, well over a quarter of the world’s population.

insurances Since 1987 For a friendly, reliable service and competitive quotations

Plus, while the idea that millennials are job-hopping much more than their parents is something of a myth, being able to work flexibly in different locations remains a core goal for many. In 2017, the Global Shapers Annual Survey, funded by the World Economic Forum, showed that 81% of respondents aged 18 to 35 from over 180 countries said they were willing to work abroad. The “ability to work and live anywhere” was one of the most important factors they identified in terms of making them feel freer in their society. But for those people who are up for relocating without a firm intention of staying put, how much point is there in spending your free time immersed in language apps or classes, if you can survive in English?

A US insurer agrees to purchase the hospitals of Torrevieja and Vinalopó in 2019 Santa Pola, a coastal town located in the comarca of Baix Vinalopó in the Valencian Community, Spain, by the Mediterranean Sea. It covers an area of 58.6 km2 (23 sq mi) and has a population of 30,000 inhabitants of whom 11,000 are residents of Gran Alacant. The town has important salt evaporation lakes (the salinas) which remain in business, additionally, most of it is recognised as the Natural Park of Salinas de Santa Pola, an important RAMSAR site. The town was settled over the ruins of a Roman village called Portus Ilicitanus (literally, Harbour of Elche); after being abandoned for decades, then a castle was constructed in the 16th century which marked the repopulation of Santa Pola. The town has an archeological museum covering these phases. Santa Pola is, at present, a coastal fishing and tourist town and its population more than doubles during the summer, with people coming mostly from the rest of the Alicante province, and also from the Basque autonomous community, Madrid, France and the UK, just to mention some. The nearby island of Tabarca (part of Alicante) can be visited by boat. Gran Alacant, 5 km north of Santa Pola along the Alicante bay, accounts for about one third of the population of the district and next to it is the Carabasi area, a nature reserve. Gran Alacant lies only a few kilometres from Alicante Airport and a few hundred metres from the town of Los Arenales which is part of the Elche district. In June 2009, the Valencian Government announced that the Alicante Tram system will be extended southwards via Alicante Airport and El Altet, to stations in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola and then onwards to Guardamar and Torrevieja before terminating in Murcia...watch this space! History The first settlements in the area date back to the third millennium BC, proof of which have been tools and paintings from the Neolithic found in the Cueva de las Arañas del Carabasí, as well as remains found from hunter-gatherers of the Palaeolithic in the Cueva de las Teresitas. During the fourth century BC as a small walled settlement was built near Vanalopó river it served mainly as a Greek-Iberia economical hub and during the first century AC, near the former site a port was built, serving the city of Illici, named Portus Illicitanus. This port proved paramount for the development of the region’s maritime commerce, together with Cartagena’s. In 460 AC, emperor Mayoriano’s flotilla set sail to attack north African vandals, but was burnt at that same port. From the Roman settlement a necropolis is still in place, as well as a fish-salting factory and the Roman House of Palmeral.

BEST FAMILY ACTIVITIES

ON THE COSTA BLANCA Sun, sea and sand is the name of the game on the Costa Blanca, but all those with kids will know you’re going to need more than that for a great family holiday. Luckily, there is a whole host of family activities in the Costa Blanca, from theme parks to dinosaurs and caves to chocolate-making. So, when you feel like venturing out from your luxury family villa, you’ll be spoilt for choice. 1. Set off on a cycle ride Whether you want to soar through the sky, skim across the water or stay firmly planted on terra firma, Why not head up to Benidorm or a day of gentle cycling through the old streets of Altea and Albir, stopping for well-deserved refreshments along the way? Breathe in the citrus smells wafting from the orange, lemon and almond groves as you pass along the paths. With bikes for children and seats for babies, this is a great activity that the whole family can take part in. The adventures don’t stop there though, and you could also opt for adrenaline-fuelled jeep safaris, paintball battles, sea kayaking, scuba diving or a family fishing trip where you can catch your dinner for the evening. 2. Challenge yourself at Elche Palmeral Aventuras A true fun-for-all-the-family adventure park, Palmeral Aventuras offers a day of action, adrenaline and laughter. Take aim during archery or slide along a hair-raising zip line through the trees. Challenge the kids to a game of laser wars, climb the 20 metre-high climbing wall or take a more relaxed row around the palm-fringed lake. There are also eight adventure circuits with more than 120 game challenges to have a go at, with rope swings and wobbling bridges as well as ladders and puzzles to solve. There are activities for even the smallest of children and more extreme challenges for bigger, braver kids. 3. Satisfy dinomaniacs at DinoPark DinoPark, located just outside of Algar, is sure to be a family crowd-pleaser. Scattered across the Spanish landscape here are over 30 life-sized prehistoric beasts, which give kids a wonderful sense of scale as they gaze up at Triceratops, Velociraptors, Diplodocus and of course the ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex. The sound effects and robotic movements will delight younger children and there is a 3D cinema too. Take a picnic and sit among the incredibly realistic-looking dinosaurs; it will be a little like entering your very own Jurassic Park movie.

4. Treat your taste buds at Museo del Chocolate Tell the kids you’re off to a museum and watch their faces drop. Then tell them it’s a chocolate museum and turn those frowns upside down! Tucked in the charming little town of Villajoyosa, and housed in a 19th-century rural home, is the museum of the Valor Chocolate company. The company have been crafting sweet treats since 1881 and their bars, bonbons and hot chocolate are some of Spain’s best-loved confectionery. You will find a history of the company as well as machines and tools used in the production over the decades. And yes, there will be plenty of opportunities to nibble some chocolate too. 5. Head underground to discover the Coves del Canelobre Delight your children with this adventure deep underground. Located just 24 kilometres from Alicante, at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level on the Cabecó Mountain, these caves are an impressive maze of eerie shapes, echoing acoustics and dripping water. There are vast cathedral-like chambers (some of the biggest in Spain) as well as millions of stalactites and stalagmites, some of which meet in the middle to create towering columns. Take a 30-minute guided to tour to learn more about the geology of the caves and see if you can make out shapes and figures in the natural formations. 6. Set sail Set out to the tiny and tranquil island of Tabarca just off the coast of Santa Pola. Although Tabarca is just 1,800 metres long and 400 metres wide, the island offers lots to keep children happy for a day. Try snorkelling in a protected marine and bird reserve or exploring the ruined walls of the old fort. Tell the kids tales of the pirates that once used this island to smuggle their treasures and see if they can discover pirate hideaways in the rocky shoreline. Euro Tours Guide offer sailings from several ports. Opt for a glass-bottomed boat; the sight of schools of fish scooting by underfoot is a sure-fire child-pleaser. 7. Scream at the top of your voice at Terra Mitica Unbridled fun is the name of the game at Benidorm’s Terra Mitica, an amusement park built around the themes of ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome. There are some truly heart-stopping rides and massive rollercoasters, promising all manner of swirling, spinning, upside-down mayhem to get the adrenaline pumping. There are gentler rides for smaller children too, as well as shows and spectacles during which Roman gladiators battle it out for honour, the mummies of ancient Egypt come alive and horse-drawn chariots carry the famous Hercules.

Funny stuff...

I went to the Doctors the other day, and he said, ‘Go to Bournemouth, it’s great for flu’. So I went - and I got it. A seal walks into a club... Went to the corner shop - bought 4 corners. So I met this gangster who pulls up the back of people’s pants, it was Wedgie Kray. I’ll tell you what I love doing more than anything: trying to pack myself in a small suitcase. I can hardly contain myself. A three-legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He slides up to the bar and announces: ‘I’m looking for the man who shot my paw.’

EURONONSENSE We’ve just had to endure, yet again, the spectacle of Spain – and Britain, for that matter – making a hash of what is really a competition that’s not worth entering. I refer to the socalled ‘Eurovision’ Song Contest, ‘won’ by Israel. (last time I looked, Israel wasn’t in Europe, but then neither, most emphatically, is Australia, who also compete!) The overall level, as ever, was pretty dire. A nation with singer/songwriters of the quality of Alejandro Sanz or Albert Hammond – to name but two – should be able to find a decent entry, you may

think. But no, year after year, Spain finishes down near the bottom, and deservedly so, certainly this time. In fact there have been remarkably few memorable songs which have graced this competition. Abba’s ‘Waterloo’ springs to mind, and I do recall Nicole’s 1982 German entry, ‘Ein bisschen Frieden,’ as being a melodic, simple song, which needed no fancy choreography. Since then – zilch! And one does miss the late Terry Wogan’s gentle sarcastic wit, as some of the more bizarre entries are performed.

ENGLISH CRICKET EXPOSED

The first Test Match against Pakistan brought English cricket into perspective. Joe Root’s side was outclassed, in batting, bowling and fielding – it’s as simple as that. Until the last, desperate stand between Jos Buttler and twenty-year-old rookie Dominic Bess restored a little pride, and ensured that the visitors needed to bat again, the only ‘high spots’ were a decent knock apiece from the skipper and Cookie, and Jonny Bairstow’s enthusiastic and capable keeping. So what’s to do? For a start, scrap those ‘central contracts,’ which mean that their owners don’t get nearly enough cricket, and also that their places in the side are practically guaranteed, which prevents up-

and-coming youngsters from having a shot at breaking through. Okay, so Dom Bess got his chance, I know, but the pace-bowling had a look of ‘sameness’ about it, crying out for a good old ‘county’ swing bowler, who could have used the green pitch. I won’t name names, as everyone will have their favourites, depending upon their county allegiance, but there is no end of possibilities, many with all-rounder capabilities. As to the batting, Stoneman has had his chance as opener, and it may be time for Adam Lyth to have another try. Malan looks vulnerable, but is probably worth another opportunity, and Stokes shouldn’t go in higher than Nº 7, where he can do plenty of damage.

Experience an unforgettable adventure!

An aeroplane was about to crash...

There were 4 passengers on board, but only 3 parachutes. The 1st passenger said “I am Stephen Curry, the best NBA basketball player. The Warriors and my millions of fans need me, and I can’t afford to die.” So he took the 1st pack and left the plane. The 2nd passenger, Donald Trump, said, “I am the newly-elected US President, and I am the smartest President in American history, so my people don’t want me to die.” He took the 2nd pack and jumped out of the plane. The 3rd passenger, the Pope, said to the 4th passenger, a 10-year-old schoolboy, “My son, I am old and don’t have many years left, you have more years ahead so I will sacrifice my life and let you have the last parachute.” The little boy said, “That’s okay, Your Holiness, there’s a parachute left for you...America’s smartest President took my schoolbag.”

SPORTS REPORT

By Malcolm Palmer

13 - AN UNLUCKY NUMBER? Certainly not for Karim Benzema, who mustt have thought Father Christmas had arrived, in the unlikely shape of Liverpool’s German goalkeeper, Karius, whose feeble attempt at a clearance fell into the Real Madrid Nº 9’s path, and was duly despatched goalwards. Liverpool recovered to equalise, but cometh the hour, cometh the cliché, and Marcelo’s cross found the acrobatic, outstretched leg of Gareth Bale, who had only just come on as sub for an ineffective Isco. His goal must go down as one of the finest ever seen at this level, and knocked the stuffing out of Klopp’s boys. Earlier the Reds had lost top goalscorer Salah after a clash with Sergio Ramos left him with a shoulder injury, and Real Madrid were also in the wars when star flanker Dani Carvajal went off in tears, to be replaced by Nacho. Liverpool fought valiantly, but the Whites’ defence held firm, then with only a few minutes left, a speculative long range shot, again by Gareth Bale, saw Karius make his second

howler of the game, palming the innocuous shot into his own net. Real Madrid thus win their third successive Champions’ League title, after a campaign during which they had overcome Paris Saint Germaine, Juventus and Bayern Munich, and their fourth in five years – their thirteenth European title overall.

Ilicitanos beat Murcia after 3-2 thanks to goals from Iván Sánchez, Sory Kaba and Manuel Sánchez Elche CF 3 v 2 Real Murcia Elche beat Real Murcia 3-2, thanks to goals from Ivan Sanchez, Sory Kaba and a Manuel Sanchez penalty, and now they move on to the second round of the promotion phase for the Second Division. Coach Pacheta confessed on Friday that it was going to be a “party of much suffering” and the predicted correctly even though Elche were always ahead on the scoreboard, but Real Murcia didn’t give up easily. Ivan Sanchez and Sory Kaba made it 2-0, but before the break an Elady penalty closed the gap to one goal. As soon as the second half started, Manuel Sánchez, also from the penalty spot,

increased the lead and it was 3-1. Chrisantus made it 3-2, but the score didn’t change again after that and Elche continue to strive for a return to the Segunda. The first half was exciting with the two teams desperate for the victory. Murcia took control of the game initially and tried to put the Elche on the back foot, but Pacheta had drilled them well and they were solid at the back. Elche move on to the next phase of the promotion rounds and seem well placed and in good form so we could see them in the Segunda next year which is what the club and city needs.
