SCHOOL ROBBED By Dave Bull

From Page 1.

Gran Alacant’s only school, Doña Vicenta Rusa was broken into on the 23rd of February, the thieves getting away with over 4,000 euros – by taking the safe with them. The monies had been raised by year five students for a trip away that they had been planning all term. The callous thieves seemingly got in to the school unnoticed, no alarms were set, and made away with the cash. Parents have suggested someone had knowledge of the cash, the school would normally not hold cash of that amount on the premises. However, it seems that it was announced that day to the parents that the money would be kept locked up in the school safe that night. The questions are being asked as to just why there was no alarm system active and why the safe was not fixed firmly to the floor or wall as it appears they made away with it without rousing any suspicion. We, and others, have offered to help the school raise the funds once again for the youngsters (La Piedra had planned a day

of entertainment and fun) but the headmistress has stated that the school would raise the funds “in house”. A curious position as many locals are willing to help and surely any extra monies raised could go towards helping the school in other ways...a new, big, safe maybe? One way we could help the children from the 5th year class if you have children at the school is support their 3 activities: - 16th and 20th of March, they will sell pizza to other children for 1,50€ euros - Bracelets. They will sell bracelets for 2€ euros at school, at 9am, 2pm, 3.30pm and 5pm - 27th of March. The sports day. The children will have plenty activities, to participate it’s only 2€€ euros

+34 966 699 441 the last few years? Then you look around at the increasing number of Brits coming to live in Spain and wonder where they get these headlines like, “BRITS LEAVE COSTAS IN THEIR THOUSANDS” and other such eye grabbing headers. Well, when you actually look in to the numbers it tells a different story. More of administration than an exodus. The INE’s migration statistics also show that 102,367 British residents left Spain between the beginning of 2012 and 2017. And, as we know, while people from the UK continue to move to Spain each year, almost 90,000 in the same period, according to the figures the number of Brits leaving the country is higher than those coming in. However, ask those in the know and you start to get to the bottom of it as they tell us that the drop in British residents is because of two reasons. Number one being that following changes to municipal registration laws it showed that many (thousands) expats who, although they were registered as living in Spain they weren’t actually in the country. Possibly because they had not de-registered after returning or possibly had passed away. However, following changes introduced

brought in in 2010 town halls must confirm if a person is still living in the area every two years, (or five years if they are in the Central Registry of Foreigners). Municipal enrollment now omits EU-members who are living in Spain and who have not applied for residency, and this is the second reason, one backed up by the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón.

CLEAN BEACH SANTA POLA EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW We met with Hector Blasco this month who is working hard to try and keep our beaches clean. How many plastics (and other things) do we have on the beaches in the area? Clean Beach Project is a non-profit association, very small but we try to do great things. On any beach in the world where large numbers of people go, we can find anything we can imagine, however surrealistic it may seem, specifically in Santa Pola we can find, boxes of juice from children’s snacks or ice cream slush, cotton buds, bottle caps of soda or tanning, broken

toys from the beach, cans, bottles of soft drinks and beer, aluminium, paper of sandwiches, single-use plastic bags, fishing lines, sweets, plastics, etc... and sometimes some more unpleasant things and many, MANY CIGARETTE BUTTS. Normally we act on the urban beaches of Santa Pola since there are more people and therefore more dirt. Where does the plastics come from? Both Santa Pola and Gran Alacant are on slopes, here it rains little, but when it rains, it rains a lot and in a very short time dragging everything in the streets and mountains through very strong rain

currents. Carrying all this rubbish that is thrown down through the streets and mountains to the sea, and the sea returns to the beach some of the things others have floated away. Then there are also people who carelessly leave things lying around and this is also the typical person who pays his taxes and believes that he has the right to be dirty and that someone cleans it for him as he pays his taxes - is incredible but true!

The plastic also is not digested and makes a plug in the intestines, stomach producing death as is the case of different whales found with more than 40kg of plastic in their stomachs. What do you do to reduce litter? We do more or less 4 days of awareness continued on page 7

What problems does plastic create? The problem with plastic is that it takes many years to get rid of smaller pieces, because it does not disappear, it only disappears to human eyes, it becomes microscopic. The problem of the plastic in the sea is that it makes a chemical reaction and attracts and adhere derivatives of the hydrocarbons. Algae are adhered creating a small ecosystem that feeds on it and later it is eaten by the fish and crustaceans thus entering our food chain . According to the BBC it has already been discovered that people already eat plastic.

Hector Blasco interview from page 5 and voluntary cleaning before summer and 2 after summer, these dates are announced by Facebook on our Clean Beach Project page. We have also held days in water sports clubs, schools, etc... who request our collaboration if our agenda allows, we will be there. In the summer we try to raise funds and hire staff to support cleaning during peak hours on the beach. We have created some giant ashtrays where people are going to throw their cigarette butts there, so that we avoid, to a certain extent, people throwing them on the beach. We have created music events in order to raise awareness and raise funds to carry out campaigns, but in all cases instead of gaining we have lost money so we may reject this option in the short term. We have created an event that is interesting because it helps us to get funds to buy sacks to clean the beach and another is what we are doing with the events, on March 3rd and 10th from 10a.m. to 1:00p.m. At the sports pavilion in Gran Alacant; a course for Personal Defence against Gender Violence, to see if with our help we can reduce those figures of murdered or battered women, we believe that this is also very important, we will have a Criminologist specialist in Gender Violence. Register at the centre or via WhatsApp on 644 054 563, the cost is €3 for 2 days, it is a symbolic price that will help us to do our work.

What do the authorities do? The Town Hall of Santa Pola helps with two projects that is one to exchange a glass full of cigarette butts for one of soft drinks and another is to take children to CIMAR and raise awareness there about the care of nature and the sea. The town council normally collaborates with everything we request except economically. I think very recently, you can see all kinds of campaigns but about the care of the sea, its funds, its ecosystem I have not seen anything yet. I think few people have realised that we have to take care of the sea because it is our great food and pharmaceutical pantry, at the rate that we have been flooding the seas of plastic in 2050 there will be more plastic than fish according to the latest forecasts. How can we (newspaper readers) help you? We do not like to ask for money, but we live in a world that without money you cannot do anything, if anyone wants to help us financially with a small contribution they can contact us through Facebook, another help would be to collaborate in another way by giving us a Like on our page where you can see what we do and how we do it, the more Likes we can get on our pages,

Gran Alacant News

the easier it will be for different companies to become interested in what we do and collaborate economically.

NEW SCHOOL FOR GA FINALLY GETS APPROVAL

Central Governement gives the financial goahead for the much needed school Last Friday 9th of March the announcement was finally made for the tender for drafting of projects, construction management and other works with respect to the construction of the second school in Gran Alacant. The announcement was published in the Official State Gazette. Santa Pola Town Hall stated, “Finally it has been achieved, with the joint efforts of the current government team, of parents, of the Department of Education and the educational community, to realise the goal that has been pursued for over 8 years.” In the announcement it is clear that the work related to the construction of a second school for Gran Alacant will cost 453,218.98 euros (including VAT). The Town Hall also went on to praise the efforts of the Department of Education, which is headed by María Dolores Tomás, and the Mayor of Santa Pola, Yolanda Seva, stating that the construction of the second school in Gran Alacant is a response to one of the most important so-

Page 7

cial demands of the municipality.

SCHOOL BUS FOR INFANTS AT LAST

Town hall agree a deal with parents to share costs Shortly the infants (3, 4 and 5 years) in Gran Alacant can have a school bus, they had been asking for one since the beginning of the school year. Given the refusal of the Ministry of Education to subsidise a fifth bus as early education is not mandatory, the council has held several interviews to propose solutions to parents. The last proposal put forward by the mayor and that the parents have accepted - according to the president of the AMPA, Maite Quirant, is that the parents pay part of the cost of the bus and the town hall will pay the rest. So, the daily cost of the bus per school day is €86.90. The parents have informed the town hall that they are willing to pay monthly payments of a maximum of 20 euros per student. “We think it is better for all parents to pay the same than for each one to do it based on their income, at the moment most of us work and it is not the same for a family to pay 20 euros as 87€,” said the president. of AMPA. There are 57 children and it remains to be seen how many parents will finally decide to pay the cost of the bus. The higher the number of students, the cheaper the price will be

News Dear GA News I always look forward to reading your bi-weekly paper on what’s going on in and around GA, and was wondering if you could look into something for me about the dog park. I’ve been taking my dog(s) to the park regularly since it opened, and noticed they have put up new signs about the use of the park. It states that only dogs registered at the town hall can use it. This would seem to be preventing dogs from other areas and visitors to the area using the park for there dogs to exercise. Can you speak to the council and find out if this is correct, also who is going to be making the checks?. Regards Phil Thanks Phil the Town Hall tell me that so long as a dog is registered with its local town hall, or is here with a passport with visitors, then there will be no problem. Local Police will make random checks throughout the year. We hope that helps.

Dear GAN; I’ve just founfd out about a new bus route that i thought would be of interest to your readers. The Council created a new bus route to connect Elche and Gran Alacant Preliminary draft of the interurban transport map for the Baix Vinalopó to

Have you got something to say? granalacantnews@gmail.com start operating in 2018 The interurban bus stop is currently located next to the General Hospital in Elche and later this year a new bus route will connect Gran Alacant with Elche and, in addition, with a stop at the General Hospital. The town hall is responding to a recurrent demand in recent years for public transport connecting the two zones. It could well be open to tender as many of the bus concessions have expired. No prices are available yet but it should not be more than 1.65€. Also a new discount for youngsters: Autocares Baile is offering a bonus of 10 trips for young people between 12 and 30 years, with which they will get a 10% discount with respect to the usual ticket price for the routes to Gran Alacant and Alicante, thanks to a request by the Department of Youth in Santa Pola. The vouchers can be purchased both at the Baile offices and on the bus itself. The bus pass will cost €12 for the Santa Pola-Gran Alacant route and €21 for the Santa Pola-Alicante route. best regards, Bob. Thanks for that Bob, any new info for our readers is always appreciated!

What happens during PRX –T33 session? First of all, the skin is cleaned. The product is then applied in small quantities to the treated zone, and is massaged into the skin until it is fully absorbed. This application is repeated until the desired effect is obtained (clearly fuller skin). The product will be applied zone by zone until the entire surface to be treated has been covered. Any residues of the gel are removed by a water-soaked cotton pad; the skin will appear smoother, and plumper straight away. A generous dose of a nourishing, hydrating cream is applied.

Tabarca’s Treasure

Most of you have heard of the Staffordshire hoard, but how many have heard of Tarbarca’s treasure, I know it exists I have seen it. On discovery of the hoard in Staffordshire it was three years before they made it public because of the importance of the find so is this what is happening with the Tabarcan treasure? Last year, after a lovely boat trip to the island of Tabarca, I don’t know if you are like me, but any touristy place I find the private bits or locked doors the most exciting, and luckily on the island the gates to the underground of the castle had the chain round but the padlock was not locked and so we sneaked in. It is a cavernous place with barreled ceilings. While in there we noticed a cat, it spooked us to start with but especially when it disappeared into the wall. With a jumpy husband; always afraid of enjoying himself, we progressed to the end wall and discovered a missing stone about 6 feet in the air, but no cat. Convinced I d seen one I managed to get my camera in the wall and flash it round a bit to take photos and see what was what and then forgot about them while we sneaked out and tried to look all casual putting the gate back as though the chain was locked. A couple of days later I remembered the photos and looked back on them and there, about 12 feet inside a passageway in the wall shone the cat’s eyes. Vindicated, after listening to all the gripes about me having hallucinations and needing to go into a home, I jumped around going ‘Na na Na na Na, told you.’ On enlarging the photo I noticed something that looked like a vase, in the end my eagle-eyed sister declared it was in fact two pieces of porcelain just in front of the cat. Not one to miss out on my fifteen minutes of fame I reported it to the department of Antiquities in Alacante who promptly ignored it. Not to be deterred, I reported it to the director of the museum on Tarbarca itself. After initially ignoring me, we went back to the island and spoke to him in person. Within a few minutes of my Spanish, a Frech archaeologist’s English and the director’s Pidgeon everything, they understood what I was telling them and grew very excited wanting to know the exact place. I led them there only to find the gates locked, they decided to get keys from the Guadia and see about excavating high up in the wall and promised to let me know. After a week I inquired how things were going and received a photograph of an egg cup, German in origin but early 20th century with a note begging me not to put any of it on social media. I asked them about the vase and that is when he said there was no vase it must have been washed away and blocked my address. How rude, I thought, glad I did not promise not to place it on media as I hit Twitter, FB and the Antique’s Roadshow. On my return to England, I sent the photograph to the Stoke Pottery Museum who were very interested in the original picture and the one of the egg cup and agreed with the date, but were more interested in the vase. I told them the story and they took a couple of days to answer before saying they could make no comment. On further examination of the photograph and enlarging it more, we can see various odd shapes in the passage, the treasure is there I am sure and am going back with my spade. Watch this space, give it three years and it will be splashed around the world, but you saw it first here in GA News.

CAN WE DO OURSELVES HARM???

Page 9

By Violet King

The answer is a resounding YES!…. I am not talking about physical abuse like self mutilation, which is harmful enough. No, I am referring to the harm we can do ourselves by hanging on to grievances, anger and bad feeling. Being annoyed: The energy you devote to being annoyed brings you nothing of value in return. Stress caused by staying annoyed is not going to get you anywhere, and certainly doesn’t solve the problem, so choose to quickly let go of your need to be annoyed. Being Offended: The time and energy you put into staying offended adds nothing positive to your life, so decide to quickly let go of feeling offended. Being Right: Winning petty arguments will do nothing to enhance your relationships, so find a way to quickly let go of the need to prove that you’re right in unimportant things. There are many things that can hold you back from making these changes, but they’ll hold you back only as long as you continue to hold on to them. Each day can be filled with plenty of valid reasons to be angry, resentful, jealous, frustrated, offended and annoyed. Everything mentioned here is negative and destructive and can cause unlimited damage in your life if you allow it to continue. Don’t allow negative things to take up long term residence in your life!! I find a classic tool for reasoning is to ask myself “How Important Is This? “ You may be surprised to find that the vast majority of things that we react badly to are not of prime importance, so take a deep breath, handle it differently and notice the difference when you take control. One of the first things that I came across that triggered me off along the road I believe in now was learning that NOBODY and NOTHING can make us angry. It is a CHOICE that WE make! Regardless of the circumstances, or what is going on around us, we CHOOSE how to respond to everything that happens to us. “You make me so mad” is no longer a valid statement, and doesn’t ring true. “He makes me so unhappy” is not true either, because happiness comes from inside, and those of us with self esteem won’t allow anyone to have that effect on us. If there is anything in your life that you don’t like, maybe you ought to take control and make the necessary changes,……….. marriages and partnerships, business dealings and personal situations can all be dramatically improved if we realise that the way we handle things gets us certain results, so handling things differently gets us different results. Try it and see!

VALENCIAN SPECTRES IN THE BASILICA OF THE VIRGIN Although I love GA, it is nice to get out now and then, Spain is a big country, and it’s easy to travel out from GA. We took a coach to Valencia; everybody recommended it, so we packed our butties, and off we toddled for the day. We both wanted to see the old town and save the new science part for another trip if we liked it. It was a hot day, and it tickled me on the coach as we travelled over the mountains to see road signs saying no overtaking in the snow, there we were in shorts and T-shirts highly amused by the thought of snow in Spain. It was a great trip with lots to see on the way, and as the journey came to an end, the coach deposited us on the edge of the old town. With map in hand sextant, watch and compass on standby, we set off in search of the Ceramic Museum, mainly to see if there was a vase like the one we discovered in Tabarca. You’ll have to get last month’s copy of GA news if you want the backstory on Tarbarca’s Treasure. Anyhow, that’s by the by, here we are sweating our socks off ready to tackle the old town. We worked out how to get where we wanted to go noticing we would pass a few sightseeing opportu-

nities on the way, one being the Basilica of the Virgin. Of course, when we stood in front of the doors, it was closed, but there are two letter-box style viewing windows that we could get to gawp through at the statue of the Patron Saint of Valencia, The Virgin of the Forsaken. The origins of the devotion to the Patron go back to a sermon by Friar Juan Gilabert Jofré, delivered in the cathedral on the 24th of February 1409. While walking to the church, he saw some boys laughing at a parishioner suffering from mental illness. In his sermon, the friar called on the faithful to help the abandoned, the poor and the sick, this truck a chord in one Lorenzo Salmon, a tradesman who began a project to build the Hospital dels Ignocens. Folls e Orats - an institution now considered to be the first psychiatric hospital in the world. More interesting though, is the legend of the authors of the image of the Virgin venerated today. In 1414, three young men, dressed as pilgrims came to the brotherhood that looked after the hospital and found the brother and his blind wife who lived there. The young men said that if

Mandy Tams

they were given food and lodging for four days, they would build an image of the Virgin. Four days went by, and they heard nothing from the room where the young men worked. They forced the door open - there was no sign of the men, but the statue stood complete in all its glory, and the brother’s wife recovered her sight: They believed the young men were angels sent from heaven. The statue was later copied by the Ribaltas, Orrente, Zariñena and Espinosa and all of them said they recognised ‘something supernatural’ about the image. Now, back to our visit last year. We stuck our camera to the viewing window; there was no one near us and no reflections in windows as there are none. When we looked at the photograph and again enlarged it, we noticed something odd. Two people sitting close together. If you look hard you can see their old-fashioned clothing, one is wearing a lace collar, it looks like a man and a woman but who are they? Are they two of the innocents granted shelter or is it the brother and his wife giving thanks for the return of her sight. I leave it to you.

5 BODEGAS TO VISIT

First-time visitors to the Alicante region can’t believe the price of wines in the supermarkets – yes, it’s still possible to get a bottle for less than €1! Many wines are also locally produced and you can take a trip to the vineyards to find out all about them. Then try a few before you buy. In fact, the Alicante region has such an impressive wine-making industry, there are three tours you can take to enjoy a trip through the unspoilt countryside and mountains where the superb wines of Alicante are created. The Marina Alta wine tour centres around Benidorm and Denia; the El Comtat route will see you heading out to Alcoy; while the Vinalopó route from Monóvar to Pinoso travels through the valleys full of vineyards where you’ll enjoy the most distinctive landscapes. Here are five favourite bodegas.

Winning awards in Pinoso A top favourite is Bodega El Sequé in Pinoso, which is a beautiful vineyard combining old methods with modern ways. It became part of the Artadi group founded by a group of winemakers and villagers in Laguardia in 1985. El Sequé 2014 was voted the best wine in the world in relation to quality and price by Wine-Searcher portal. This wine is produced from the Monastrell grapes and is said to reflect the Mediterranean character, ripe fruits and a balsamic freshness. It’s a family affair Just 19kms from Pinoso is one of Spain’s historic wine centres, Monovar, home to Monastrell and Fondillón wines. In the centre of town is the Primitivo Quiles winery founded in 1926. The Quiles family’s ties with wine-making date back to 1780 in the Alicante province marrying the quality of the rich history of wines and varieties, such as Monastrell, with the demands of today’s consumers.

TV stars Followers of the recent TV programme Costa del Celebrity will recognise Bodega Faelo as the celebs headed to the Elche vineyard to sample - yet more - wines. It’s another family-run producer using traditional methods trying to avoid the use of pesticides and fungicides as much as possible. Native varieties such as Monastrell and Muscat are produced here as well as foreign varieties including Syrah and Chardonnay. You can arrange a visit at any time but a special time to go is in September to see the grapes being harvested by hand followed by the traditional grape treading by foot. Spring collection In Alfaz del Pi is the award-winning Enrique Mendoza vineyard, which offers wine-tasting tours where you can find out more about the vines, production and taste some of the varieties on offer. It’s a beautiful setting in fine countryside, making it hard to believe you’re just 5kms from Benidorm. Another family affair, Sr Mendoza’s passion for wine led to him setting up the vineyard to produce fine varieties. The bodega was set up in the 1970s along with a second one in Villena, the Finca El Chaconero. The wines are aged in specially selected oak barrels to produce fine wines including Chardonney, Pinot Noir, and Merlot Crianza. Hello to Xalo Further north in the spectacular Jalon Valley is Bodega Xaló with more than 50 years of history. As well as guided tours, you can just pop in to the shop to sample and buy a variety of good local wines and olive oil. Wine-making in Jalon dates back to the 15th century and the Xaló bodega pays homage to its long tradition. These wines have won many awards with the Bahía de Dénia white wine, sweet Mistela and sparkling Bahía Nature certainly worth stocking up on.

Coming to Netflix from 18th March Film The Witch 18 March Occult horror mixed with historical drama to spawn a nightmare folk tale. Self-exiled into the wilderness of 17th-century New England, this settler family’s existence becomes a desperate scrabble for survival, what with a stubbornly pious patriarch, failing crops, sinister livestock and something unholy lurking in the woods. The execution is occasionally shaky but the period detail and atmospheric imagery dredge up some ancient dread Film Guardians of the Galaxy 20 March Free of all that superhero baggage, Marvel’s latest is a wacky, almost weightless space adventure with no dark matter to speak of. Bringing together a band of alien misfits around Pratt’s charming interplanetary renegade, it’s a riot of comic banter, space battles, and literally colourful characters. It doesn’t have a great deal to say about anything, but it’s funny enough to get away with it. TV The Santa Clarita Diet: season two 23 March Cannibalism, real estate and Drew Barrymore: the pitch meeting for The Santa Clarita Diet must have been very strange. It’s back for another run with Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as a couple who try to exist in suburban California while one of them deals with an unstoppable bloodlust.

ON TV

TV The Defiant Ones 23 March Patchy hagiography or deep and meaningful survey of the unlikely relationship between west coast hip-hop’s nascent scene starter and a rock stalwart? US critics were divided when this Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre documentary launched last year, but this is worth exploring just for the 80s outfits. Just take it all with a large pinch of salt. Film Captain America: Civil War 30th March Title notwithstanding, this 2016 film continued the Avengers’ collective war on international terror, with the twist that an ideological disagreement has incited a clash between the wholesome eponymous hero and Robert Downey Jr’s more slippery Iron Man. That novelty aside, it’s business as usual, though the huge, daft pyrotechnics have been scaled down slightly to accommodate some political to-and-fro. If anything, the well-choreographed combat scenes, of which there are still many, seem to stand in the way of more complicatedly compelling drama. TV A Series of Unfortunate Events: season two 30th March The first series of this Tim Burtonesque tale of the Baudelaire orphans was one of Netflix’s highlights from last year. Neil Patrick Harris is back as Count Olaf, the gross Dickensian caricature who is also the last person you should ever ask for parenting advice.

SPORTS REPORT

By Malcolm Palmer

EXCELLENCE AND ABSURDITY

The World Indoor Athletics Championships were held in Birmingham, as the early March weather drove everyone indoors. There were some notable performances. The Polish squad beating the all-powerful Americans in the 4x400 metres relay in a world record time perhaps the best of them, but Kiwi shot-putter Tom Walsh sprung a great surprise by beating the American favourites and Brit Pozzi had a fine victory in the 60 metres hurdles. Although it was no great surprise, it was good to see Johnson-Thompson’s win in the Pentathlon, too. But the proceedings were marred throughout by jumbled and fussy judging, with myriad disqualifications, often based on hairs’-breadth decisions, ruining many spectacles for athletes

and spectators alike. The British team in the 4x400 were ‘promoted’ to bronze medal position by one of these disqualifications, then had the medal taken away, then given back. The Spanish athlete who finished third in the 800 metres was promoted to second, then relegated back to third! Worst of all, Oscar Husillos, after being credited with a European record win in the 400 metres, was stripped of his medal for infringing on a line by about a millimetre, as was – eventually – shown to television viewers. (These were only a few examples of a whole host of such happenings) There was a total lack of flexibility in the judging – this in a sport where, in long and triple jumps, measurements depend upon a point of entry into the sand, and in throws, upon the eye of a ‘spotter’ to determine where an implement landed. It is to be hoped that no further championships of importance are placed in Britain.

ELCHE SEE LEAD SLIP AWAY

Elche won a useful away point at Alcoyano with their 1-1 draw and remain in the playoff places, hugging that third spot. More than 500 Elche fans made the trip to Alcoyano to see the Franjiverdes take the lead in the 31st minute through a Javi Flores goal. However, Nieto equalised in the 65th minute to make it a well-deserved draw. Elche had a remarkable first half but made too many mistakes in the second half which lead to a goal and the loss of two points. Pachete kept to the same 4-14-1 format that worked in the 2-0 victory against Llagostera but with Jony Niguez and Josan replacing the injured Manuel Sanchez and Collantes. It was an intense game from the initial whistle with both sides looking to take control. Elche started to dominate in midfield and created several good chances. They looked the better side and deserved to go ahead with a cross that Javi Flores headed into the back of the net. Alcoyano tried to get back into the game but their attacks were toothless until halfway through the second half when

Nieto scored for the first time in seven home games. Hercules had a rare home win, 1-0, against Formentera so, hopefully, the change of coach is bringing new ideas to the team. Hercules are eighth and seven points off the playoff places. But they’re also just nine points off the drop zone, which shows just how tight this division is this season. Their goal through Alejandro Tari in injury time put Formentera in the drop zone, just when it looked as though a draw was on the cards. The away side worked hard, although without many clear ideas, and sharing the points may have seemed a fair result but Hercules had other ideas in a fairly flat game. Josip Visnjic made changes with Samuel, Moha and Oscar Diaz returning to the line-up but they still failed to show the signs of life needed if they want to fight for promotion, Luckily, their rivals were unable to create chances or pose a threat. The substitutions in the second half had the desired effect and Formentera started to crumble. Eventually a blunder by Jose Juan in the final minute allowed Hercules through to break their disastrous home streak.
