ometimes, a cigar is just a cigar. And sometimes, it’s a work of art. Cigars have retained a resilient following, remaining a favorite vice of the wealthy and discriminating. The inaccessibility of Habanos, or Havana cigars, continues to perpetuate the mystique, and nothing tops the boxes of hand-rolled cigars that bear the phrase “hecho a mano”—made by hand. A Rich History In the early Americas, tobacco was considered so valuable, it served as currency, was smoked as a peace offering and used by native medicine men for shamanic ceremonies. The United States’ founding fathers created a tradition of cigar culture in private salons—early cigar lounges that housed the fragrant smokes. Since the Cuban embargo imposed by President Kennedy in 1962, a resilient industry by Cuban exiles—who survived their revolution and prospered despite invasive federal regulation—has succeeded through several decades. Since as early as 1931, Hollywood has used the cigar as a prop and accessory. In the silent movie classic “City Lights,” Charlie Chaplin played an endearing tramp who struggled through lighting a cigar. Fellow funnyman Groucho Marx was never seen

CEO and connoisseur Dave Harry purchases very rare humidors, stocked with equally rare cigars of which only 30 sets are made for the first of each year. “I have been collecting these cigar sets since 2006 and have had them only on display,” said Harry, who carries an estimated $1.8 million retail in rare cigars. “I am a true collector of cigars because I keep what I collect and wait till there are no more available.” Harry also trades with other collectors who no longer have the passion to store cigars. In addition, his connections with different families like the Fuentes, the Padrons and the Garcias allow Harry to obtain “special cigars that are not sold in the typical market.” For example, one of Harry’s most unique cigars is the Princessa D, which is only one of the cigars in the Fuente Opus X 2008 Charity Box, of which only 500 boxes are made each year. “The Opus Princessa D has over 14 different types of tobacco in it, which makes the cigar change flavor from draw to draw,” Harry explained. “And I do like to smoke cigars, not just look at them.” Harry said the most popular brands requested are the Arturo Fuente Opus X or a Cuban Cohiba. “A lot of people ask for those only because they are illegal in the U.S. and like the fact they have something they shouldn’t,” Harry admitted. “I believe the Cuban market is not what it used to be. In my opinion, there are a lot of very good cigars that are legal in the U.S. which are better.”

Selecting a Cigar Selecting the perfect smoke can seem daunting, especially to a novice. Thankfully, we’ve got some tips to allow you to boldly go where you may not have gone before. “Selecting a cigar is by trial and error, similar to wine tasting or trying out new brews,” Hennegan said. In a cigar, the outermost wrapper determines much of the cigar’s character and flavor, while the filler—wrapped up bunches of leaves inside the wrapper, held together by binders—makes up the majority of the cigar. The size and shape of the cigar, together are known as the vitola, is measured by length and ring gauge. Also key in choosing a smoke is strength, which should not be confused with flavor. Strength is similar to coffee— strong, mild, etc.—while flavor evolves or deepens on the palate as tobacco is drawn upon, often resembling fruit, spices, flowers or even leather. “At some point you have to make a decision and run with it, but always remember, what is mild to one person is not so to the next,” Hennegan advised. When choosing a full-bodied cigar or smoking for the first time, Harry offers this advice: “Be sure to have a good meal and don’t try something new on an empty stomach. Also, only puff on the cigar and hold it in the mouth. More experienced smokers will hold the smoke in and let the last 20 percent out through their noses. This gives the cigar its true flavor profiles while using all your senses.” For Panamanian resident and ex-pat Robert Cozza, a cigar aficionado of 60 years, the best smoke is “a Honduran full-bodied Maduro Torpedo because it has flavor, consistent draw and an even burn. I can light it with one matchstick. Cigar quality and consistency from bundle to bundle is disappointing. I don’t believe the leaf is aged as of days of yore.” Although veterans like Cozza are old school with their matchsticks, according to Harry, “A good cigar will burn very slowly and will allow you to come back later and not have to relight it. This is a sign of a well-constructed cigar.”

ietnam. Southeast Asia. Ho Chi Minh. These words tend to stir conflicting images for a generation who witnessed the world change, as soldiers were sent into the jungle over night. Today they represent both history and the unknown—an exotic Communist nation in the midst of a postmodern globalized world. But often it is from the ashes that new life arises—a new destination to explore and discover. Vietnam still lives in the shadows of Western society, but just beyond the horizon, a new day comes and Vietnam is looking brighter than ever. More than 2,000 miles of coastline boarding the South China Sea harken international travelers to experience tropical beaches, incredible World Heritage Sites and stunning biodiversity. And while the country’s natural grandeur appeals to those souls who

Northwest of the Golf of Tonkin, the bay is dotted with monolithic islands covered in lush jungle. Many of these islands are hollow and reveal stunning cave interiors and natural grottos that transform the surrounding world into a playful fantasy. The legend of this bay claims that gods sent dragons to protect the Vietnamese people from foreign invaders. The dragons spat out jade and jewels that took shape as the islands that blocked the invaders and now make up the bay. Painter Erik Skoldberg is leaving his mark. By Natalie Neece
E
rik Skoldberg is painting the town red—and a host of other colors. The artist’s work is on display at various locations all over the country. Skoldberg, a San Diego native and University of San Diego graduate, said his work is heavily influenced by his own experiences. His use of bright colors and broad strokes leave a lasting impression. “I want to build a collection that connects my travels, experiences and Mother Nature, and take a view into that world of emotional harmony,” he said. Skoldberg’s journey into art began at a young age. His mother, Gloria Skoldberg, has been teaching art for more than 30 years and operates the Skoldberg Art Academy. Erik said he was fascinated by colors, color theory and the impact color can have. His work is typically done in an open-air setting. Using pictures from his travels, Skoldberg will look for color combinations that “most effectively carry out my image and fuse appropriately.” “Once my colors are determined, my dance of brush strokes begins,” he said. If the colors from his work seem familiar, it’s because they are. Skoldberg said he relies on the icy blues of Alaska, the tropical greens of Fiji and the burning reds of a stunning sunset. “I am following a road map from my experiences straight to the canvas, and hope the viewer will interpret it individually,” he said. Last year, Skoldberg was showcased in a FedEx marketing

But perhaps Skoldberg’s biggest achievement was his first solo show at the grand opening of Salazar Contemporary Art Exhibits in La Jolla, California. “I believe that great artists should also be great individuals, and Erik Skoldberg is passionate about his art and helping others,” Salazar said. “He has supported many charitable causes throughout his life by donating his beautiful artwork to various causes. I admire his commitment to painting, which is different than committing to art … he paints from the heart and by this, he gives his works a breath and life of their own.” It’s been a busy year for Skoldberg, and it appears things won’t be slowing down any time soon. “I approach each painting with the same technique,” he said. “My strokes and multiple layers are never the same order, causing new dimensions and new forms of expression. My style will continue with new ideas and new constantly changing results. My painting will always evolve.”

he golf we know today evolved from sticks or primitive clubs used to hit pebbles along a sandy dune by the seashore or rabbit runs in Scotland’s Kingdom of Fife. Since the ole’ stick and ball games of yore, the technology of the game has changed exponentially. Tradition stepped aside in the 1850s, when sticks were replaced with iron-headed clubs and the introduction of steel shafts in the United States. Advancements in the game itself began as early as the 1930s, when the United States Golf Association set standards for the weight and size of the golf ball. These standards impacted the way the game was played, which, in turn, impacted the technology of the ball and ultimately the club. Graphite became popular in the 1970s because of its lightness and strength, and the movement of the first metal “wood”

prompted further developments. Metal has now completely replaced wood—making wood club sets a nostalgic collectible for antique dealers and museums. Technology such as graphite shafts and lightweight titanium heads have also changed the size of the club head. The strength of these once space-age materials now allow the face of the club to be thinner, increasing the spring-like effect of the clubface on to the ball and the distance the ball will travel. In fact, in an effort to maintain the challenge of the game, the USGA has recently limited the spring-like effect, known as the coefficient of restitution (COR), to .83 and the maximum club head size to 460-cc. A pioneer in golf technology, Richard C. Helmstetter began his career as a billiard cue designer, and later became chief club designer for the Callaway Golf Company
at its headquarters in Carlsbad, CA. With the help of Glenn Schmidt, the company’s master toolmaker, the company developed the original Big Bertha driver using a large volume (190-cc) steel club head. The Big Bertha grew to 290-cc in 1997. Through the Big Bertha, Callaway contributed to a page in the history of the swing. The company continues to develop technology that changes the game. Available this month, the RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver is the newest product in Callaway technology. Headlining the adjustable driver is a powerful new Speed Frame Face Technology that optimizes stiffness and stress distribution across the face for more efficient energy transfer. “The RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver is worthy of its extreme designation,” said Dr. Alan Hocknell, SVP of research and development at Callaway Golf. “We
worked tirelessly to improve on the best distance characteristics of our longest drivers, and the result is incredibly fast ball speed off the Speed Frame Face, plus the lowest CG of any adjustable driver in golf. It will not be matched.” Speed Frame Face Technology is a combination of VFT and Hyperbolic Face Technology, resulting in stress distribution across the titanium face for a larger, more consistent sweet spot and increased ball speed. It also saves weight that is redistributed in the clubhead to improve the center of gravity (CG) and maximize inertia, which leads to optimized ball flight and forgiveness. Also featured is a tighter bulge radius than its predecessor, providing a more preferred look at address, along with more consistent sidespin and dispersion. The crown of the RAZR Fit Extreme
is a forged composite of more than seven million turbostratic carbon fibers, which is lighter than titanium. Its OptiFit Hosel technology now allows one to manually adjust the shaft, grip and loft on this driver. Callaway maintains that the personal adjustment on the face angle—open, closed or square—improves the accuracy and trajectory of the shot from either the tee or the fairway. The OptiFit Weights can also be adjusted to shift the clubhead’s CG to promote either draw or neutral ball flights. Golfers now dial in their ideal settings and hit drives like never before. The RAZR Fit Xtreme features two tourgrade shafts as stock offerings. The primary shaft, the Aldila Trinity, combines Aldila’s three patented design technologies—RIP, S-Core and Micro Laminate—into a single shaft design. A secondary offering, the Matrix 7M3 Black Tie, is a heavier,
lower launching, lower spinning option for higher head speed and higher spin players. Neither shaft will be modified from the product available in the aftermarket. So in effect, changing your driver will amend a bad swing, which proves yet again, technology may soon surpass human ability. Another respectable authority on golf technology also headquartered in Carlsbad, CA is TaylorMade-Adidas, which continues to offer stiff competition in the market. Gary Adams, the inventor of metalwood, founded TaylorMade in McHenry, Ill., in 1979 and acquired by Adidas in 1997. Via a global webcast on Oct. 23, Mark King, current president and CEO of TaylorMade, officially introduced what he

calls the biggest iron innovation to date: the RocketBladez. These irons boast a new technology that promotes high-launching, long-straight and quick-stopping performance for golfers of all abilities. The key technology is its “speed pocket,” which was inspired by the distanceenhancing benefits of the RocketBallz fairway woods and Rescue clubs. Altogether, the RocketBladez set consists of 11 individually designed clubheads, each tailored in size, shape and feature to maximize distance and control. “Metalwoods have advanced tremendously since TaylorMade introduced the first one in 1979,” King said. “There hasn’t been a significant advancement in irons since the perimeter-weighted cavityback, which was introduced more than 50 years ago.” The speed-pocket advantage is especially effective on impacts made low on the face. TaylorMade studies indicate that 68 percent of iron shots by amateur golfers are mishits below the center of the face.

The RocketBladez also boasts an ultrathin clubface with improved inverted cone design. The speed pocket is filled with specially formulated polyurethane developed by 3M that quiets vibration without slowing or inhibiting the flex of the pocket. It also keeps debris out. Both models consist of strong, maraging stainless steel. Not only is it 11-percent thinner, but it adds up to 10 COR points to the face compared to Burner 2.0 irons and promotes less drop-off in ball speed on impacts low on the face, where the majority of iron mishits occur. That means the COR low on the face is higher than it has ever been in a TaylorMade iron.

RocketBladez models have low and centered CG location and external and internal hosel-bending notches. The irons have now been fine tuned to a lower CG by 2.5 mm and centered location on the face by shortening the hosel to save weight and then redistributed to all the strategic areas within the head. Also featured, is a distinct external notch on the outer, rear side of the hosel and internal notch inside that together makes it easy to bend the head to change the lie angle. On the Apollo 14 mission on the moon in 1971, Alan Shepard fitted a six-iron head to the handle of a lunar sample collection device and launched two golf balls over a mile into the distance. he beginning of the year is stereotypically accompanied by resolutions, pledges and declarations for change. For many Americans, it’s the time of year to commit to improved health and fitness. This year, two of the most interesting and, in some quarters, most controversial movements in fitness that readers will encounter are CrossFit, a current fitness trend, and functional training. While the two may appear similar, to practitioners of the health and fitness industry, they are almost diametrically opposed. At its most elemental level, a CrossFit workout combines body weight exercises, gymnastics, Olympic-style weight lifting, and often strength-endurance training. The routines change daily and are designed for high intensity exercise to be performed in a timed setting. To CrossFit enthusiasts, these are referred to as WODs (Workout Of the Day).

However, little attention is paid to form because the most important component in a WOD is the volume of work performed within a timed period. The majority of CrossFit practitioners are part of a community of like-minded athletes who push each other to accomplish more work in shorter times. To functional trainers and strength coaches, functional science in personal training and fitness was born from the lessons learned from the world of physical therapy and rehabilitation. It is applying the science of anatomy and human movement to the art of improving performance, reducing injury and enhancing durability. Functionality is working within the parameters of the way the body is made to work. Note that this isn’t working with the way it can work. Most readers know to use their legs when lifting a heavy object (functional) and to not use their backs (nonfunctional).

Trainers and coaches employing functional science will use inflatable Swiss balls to introduce elements of instability, multiple joint movements tailored for particular clients, and dynamic tools, such as heavy rope, to initiate metabolic changes. However, to say that functional training is about its tools is as accurate as saying the sport of basketball is about the whistles the referees use to call fouls. Rather, it is all about the science. All training is a matter of stimulus and response, risk versus reward. It is in this philosophy that the two ideologies part ways most dramatically. For an example, the hardcore culture of CrossFit has spawned playful T-shirts celebrating vomiting as a result of intense workouts, and worse yet, rhabdomyolisis, a potentially life-threatening condition wherein muscle tissues get broken down beyond the body’s capacity to manage it and the tissue enters the bloodstream, where it can cause kidney failure. Meanwhile, functional training is about achieving the maximum result for the minimum effort. The apathy to proper lifting form, the “devil-may-care” spirit regarding injury, and cavalier attitude towards potential death inherent to the CrossFit culture is anathema to functional trainers and coaches, whose program design and methodologies are based in safety and rehab science. And while Crossfit founder Greg Glassman may call his program “functional,” it can only be so for someone whose daily life is filled with carrying heavy weights over large distances, followed by time spent on hanging gymnastic rings and rounded out with broad jumps. CrossFit represents a fad in fitness, bound to pass like so many previous iterations of popular body mechanics and improvements. Functional training, with its basis on proven science, its emphasis on improving daily living, and its intrinsic focus on health as a key component to fitness is here to stay.

With bridal, prom, and holiday collections well received, the shoe designer now welcomes its newest spring designs, with the addition of ballet flats in vibrant shades of velvet suede. Making a difference one step at a time, or as Blake Mycoskie, founder and chief shoe giver of TOMS, would say — a concept of giving ‘One for One,’ has set in motion a cause-center mission for business unlike any other; for every purchase of TOMS shoes, another is donated to a person in need. A derivative of “tomorrow,” TOMS simply seeks to offer a better future for impoverished children; a theme that continues to inspire brand loyalists and those hoping to make an impact on the world around. While vacationing in Argentina several years ago, Mycoskie became inspired with the idea — an “aha” moment that has truly impacted the lives of millions globally. During his visit, he took note of the many children

walking barefoot in the small villages along harsh terrain. The Texas-native and former “Amazing Race” contestant also became aware of the evident health issues — soil-inherited diseases, such as ring worm, podoconiosis (or simply “mossy foot”), and tetanus, that can be absorbed through exposed skin; especially in regions laden with silicarich soil. TOMS, as a result, helps to prevent such disease and increase basic hygiene standards, allowing youth to attend school, work, and simply dream of a brighter tomorrow. In further raising awareness to the impact a pair of shoes can truly have, TOMS’ 5th Annual “One Day Without Shoes” event — slated for April 10, 2012 — asks the world to go without shoes for a day; the event has previously yielded more than 250,000 participants and more than 1,600 events worldwide. According to Mycoskie, “The problem is large but the solution is simple. Wearing shoes and basic hygiene can prevent both infection and disease due to unsafe roads and contaminated soil. By imagining a life without shoes, we can all contribute to the awareness of these conditions,
which is why we ask everyone to join TOMS and participate in ‘One Day Without Shoes’.” Lightweight in nature, TOMS’ shoes are modeled after the alpargata — a shoe worn by Argentine farmers for the past several hundred years. Welcome to the Family A test drive of the 2013 Porsche Boxster shows it lives up to the brand. By Willie Daniels
B
efore 1905, Albert Einstein couldn’t find a teaching job. Billionaire Ross Perot got his big start after borrowing $1,000 from his wife. Humble beginnings often forge great success— and there will be yet another with Porsche’s latest release of the 2013 Boxster S. In order to appreciate what Porsche has accomplished with this new vehicle, a few opinions must be stated, many of which have been accepted by the automotive industry regarding the first generation (Model: 986) and second generation (987) of Porsche’s Boxster, both remembered for their less-than-flattering exteriors. The soft rounded
bodylines in each of the earlier generations had a feminine feel and performance that left the driver wanting more. And with a base price significantly less than the 911, the Boxster came to be known as the “Poor Man’s Porsche.” But that’s all but changed. The new 2013 Boxster S is no longer the unwanted stepchild of the Porsche family. It has been completely reshaped, reformatted and refitted into a stunning automotive experience with a look all Porsche fans have come to expect from the luxury brand. Exterior Upon first glance, the car’s stout aggressive styling is evident. The Boxster S boasts the angry look in which sports car enthusiasts revel. The wheel wells are deep and the bodylines are hard, distinct yet true to Porsche’s core styling. The 2013 Boxster S truly has an exotic-car feel, separating itself from the predecessor’s common lines. Upon closer inspection the meticulous thought and detail that went into this car is evident. For example, the taillights have integrated LED blinkers that slightly bulge and split the enclosure in half, while aligning themselves with the integrated spoiler on the rear of
the car, giving the impression the spoiler runs across the entire rear of the vehicle. The air ducts on the side of the car are met by two hard bodylines in the door, making them both functional and beautiful. While 19inch wheels are now standard, the 20-inch rims (upgrade option) suit the car nicely without overpowering the design. The car is truly beautiful, and with the opportunity to test drive it for two days courtesy of San Diego Porsche, I can honestly say it both turned heads and changed my view. From the streets of downtown San Diego through the back roads of Palm Desert, I never stopped without a conversation generated by this car. It’s spectacularly different than the previous Boxster, yet most people failed to realize the improvements both visible and under the hood. The 2013 Boxster S is so unique and brilliantly designed it will likely become the standard by which all other two-seater sport convertibles are now measured. But the exterior beauty of this car is simply the beginning. Porsche owners can now look forward to beautiful design amalgamated with user comfort and functionality. Interior No matter how striking a car may be from the outside, the driver is the only person that deals with any inconveniences on the inside. Many functional problems can occur when manufacturing a luxurious two-door convertible sports car. Can it hold a cup a
coffee on your way to work? Can you reach the radio, climate controls, navigation and maneuver them easily? Is the legroom comfortable for various heights? These are real, everyday issues that many owners consider before purchasing a vehicle like the Boxster S. Porsche took all these things into consideration. There’s two additional inches off legroom versus the previous model of the Boxster, as well as a significant amount of headroom. I tested the car by having a few gentlemen over 6-feet-tall sit in the drivers seat. Each fit nicely and said they were surprisingly comfortable. Modern vehicles have buttons integrated into the steering wheel that allow the driver to accomplish tasks without his or her hands leaving the wheel. The Porsche Boxster S is no exception, with a bevy of electronically controlled options available at your fingertips.The ease of navigating through these options is where the 2013 Boxster separates itself. By utilizing a scrolling pushbutton wheel, you can simply roll your thumb over the button and access your tire pressure, trip information, phone book, diagnostics and even an additional map (separate from the one in the center console) in which you can zoom to see your location on the road. All this from one button. One of the more impressive interior features are the ventilated leather seats. With the push of a button, air is sucked from in-between you and the seat, keeping your back dry when temperatures rise. Gone are the days of punishing your white

As technology advances and becomes increasingly incorporated into cars, additional training and the reading of thick manuals has become a daunting but necessary evil when purchasing a highend vehicle. Just because a car has the ability to take advantage of technology, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a driver will be able use it properly. Porsche has done a fantastic job of making the user aspect of its technology very transparent for the driver. For example, connecting your phone via Bluetooth and accessing the phone book from the steering wheel is easily done without opening up the manual and thumbing through the index. These features along with many more are all just as easy as programing your favorite radio stations and using the navigation. Performance Let’s be honest, the first number that most people look at when buying a luxury sports car is the horsepower rating. But when building a true sports car, the numbers
can be deceiving. A true sports car needs more than just power to compete in luxury high-end performance category. Building a true sports car for the street is more than strapping a rocket to a roller skate. Weight, suspension, brakes and drive train all play their part. The specs for the Boxster S can’t be overlooked, with 315 horsepower galloping out from the 3.4-liter, six-cylinder engine taken from the Porsche 911. The chassis is completely different from the old Boxster S, constructed primarily out of aluminum and magnesium, making the total weight of the car a tremendous 77-pounds lighter and 40-percent stiffer. That’s not a misprint—it really is 40-percent stiffer. And when combined with computer-controlled adjustable suspension and steering, racing brakes, grippy tires, a mid-engine setup and a seven-speed PDK transmission— which shifts faster than a manual— prepare to have a smile on your face when you take it for a test drive. Hands down this is the best handling car I’ve ever driven. It was so well-behaved on the bends that I felt it was my duty to
discover its limit. Each time I drove faster, turned sharper, I thought I would feel the rejection of the car. However, no such limit was reached as it had more and more to give. In two words: mind blowing—and in more than two words, this car reshaped my thinking of the Boxster. It’s the perfect balance of power, superior handling, braking, road feel and comfort. Oh, and did I mention it gets 28 highway miles to the gallon, so we can add economical to that list? It can be difficult to try to convey on the printed page the emotion and adrenalin that comes from sitting behind the wheel of a Porsche. It gives you the distinguished feeling of confidence and strength that can only come from being a luxury sports car owner. Driving a 2013 Boxter S is an experience you must try yourself in order to understand how amazing the drive really is. From humble beginnings and controversial criticism, the new Boxster S has risen as an individualized performance machine, ready to dominate any competitors in its class.

T
he phrase “healthy cuisine” often conjures images of granola, tasteless tofu or vegetables boiled down to unrecognizable colors. People picture fish, chicken and vegetarian dishes that are often high on health but low on taste. Celebrity chef Robert Irvine, however, sees things differently. Irvine, the star of Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible,” said he believes cooking with fresh ingredients results in healthy, flavorful food. “Food is like fuel for the body,” he said. “It’s what you put in your body over time that helps you.” Irvine knows a thing or two about healthy living. He eats every two hours and works out frequently in an effort to keep pace with his wife Gail Kim, a professional wrestler. The two share philosophies on healthy eating and exercise. “She’s a great cook, too,” Irvine added. According to Irvine, the key to a healthy diet is eating lots of protein and eliminating fats and butter. His go-to proteins are chicken, salmon and sea bass, which he prefers to grill and then top with various salsas of black beans, onions, tomatoes and “a little hot sauce.” His secret weapon in the kitchen is using grapeseed oil, which has omega-3 fatty acids and no flavor. He uses it in place of cooking oil, which can overpower a dish’s flavor. Keeping the pantry stocked with flavor-boosters is also essential in making healthy and tasty dishes, according to Irvine. His favorites are rice wine vinegar and ginger in sauces and dressings, and stone-ground mustard to emulsify dressings. He uses fresh fruit such as mangoes and strawberries, and relies on red onions or olives for a more savory sauce. When it comes to cooking, Irvine’s primary advice is to regulate the hear. Whether it’s a skillet, grill or oven, it should be pre-heated before adding the food, so that it spends the least possible amount of time in the heat, therefore retaining the most nutrients. Irvine’s healthy habits likely date back to his days in the British

Royal Navy. The Salisbury native enlisted when he was 15, and refined his culinary skills until he was eventually selected to work aboard the royal family’s personal yacht. From there, he cooked his way across Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and the Americas. As part of a guest chef program training U.S. Navy chefs, Irvine worked in the White House cooking for former presidents including George Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He’s parlayed nearly three decades of cooking experience into a successful career as a professional chef. His show “Restaurant: Impossible,” in which he has two days to turn failing restaurants around, has been a ratings hit for the Food Network. He has two cookbooks—“Mission: Cook!” and “Impossible to Easy”—and two restaurants—Robert Irvine’s Eat! in Hilton Head, N.C. and Nosh in Bluffton, S.C. But for all the success Irvine has received from cooking, it seems his biggest joy is giving back. This year, he will be touring America with his interactive show, “Robert Irvine LIVE.” The improvisational
cooking show features Irvine completing a number of cooking challenges using audience suggestions and a robot named Chad. “I didn’t want it to be just a cooking demonstration,” Irvine said. “I wanted everyone to be involved with it. People are going through such a hard time now with the economy. If I can provide a couple of hours of escapism that they enjoy, great.” A number of Irvine’s appearances benefit charities for children and veterans. He’s teamed with actor Gary Sinise and his foundation, which helps veterans. In October, the two appeared at the San Diego Naval Medical Center’s Wounded Warrior and Staff Appreciation Day. Sinise performed with his band (Lt. WhErE to Eat Gottino Neighborhood: West Village Cuisine: Wine bar, Italian Price range: $11-30 This Italian-themed gastropub, wine bar and coffee shop features a beautiful outdoor garden, which is open until 3 a.m. The restaurant specializes in cicchetti (or tapas) and is famous for its
cheeses, pates and even a seasonal rabbit pot pie. WD-50 Neighborhood: Lower East Side. Cuisine: Molecular gastronomy, American Nouveau Price range: $61 and up Chef Wylie Dufrense has made a name for himself with his ecclectic cooking style, and WD-50 certainly delivers on that front. Dufrense relies on science and chemistry to create one-of-a-kind dishes— like a sunny-side-up egg salad with carrot puree and coconut broth. The Meatball Shop Neighborhood: Lower East Side Cuisine: Italian, American Price range: $11-30 Home to the best homemade meatballs in the city, the Meatball Shop is a cheap alternative to the other pricey Italian restaurants. I highly recommend the ice cream sandwich, which features two homemade cookies and a sizable portion of ice cream.
Landmark Neighborhood: Upper West Side, Tribeca Cuisine: American Price range: $31-60 Chef Marc Murphy’s menu caters to all appetites. This after-work hangout boasts an incredible wine list and sells only by the bottle. The catch—all wine is served at a minimum markup. The steaks are cooked to order and I’m told the sweetbreads are to die for. Tea & Sympathy Neighborhood: West Village Cuisine: British Price range: $11-30 An English-owned and operated tea house with a pub. Far better than your mum used to make. WhErE to Party The Box Neighborhood: Lower East Side This spot is very exclusive. You need to know someone to get in or you pay $500 per person. Once in, prepare yourself for celebs and freaky behavior. Brandy Library Neighborhood: Tribeca What sets Brandy Library apart—aside from its sizable
selection of whiskeys, brandy and spirits—is its level of style and sophistication. It’s not the rowdiest bar in New York, but it may be the classiest. Bar and Books Neighborhood: West Village This chain has four sites in New York, including one of the last cigar bars in the city. Max’s Tobacco Shop boasts an immense scotch selection and more Bond Girls in red dresses than the opening credits sequence to “A View to a Kill.” Little Branch Neighborhood: West Village Sasha Petraske, the man behind the members-only speakeasy Milk and Honey, founded this drinks-only establishment. The bar features live jazz, tin ceilings and not a stitch of food. Drinks are served with hand-carved ice. Order a beer and get a frown; order vodka and get kicked out. Bathtub Gin Neighborhood: Chelsea A secret door in an unassuming coffee shop leads to this 1920s-style speakeasy. The decor is meticulous, from the memorable entrance to the copper bathtub in the middle of the room to the pull-chains toilet flushers.

WhErE to shoP Jesse James Boutique Neighborhood: West Village This stylish boutique is casual—it serves up Coronas or sparkling wine while you shop. The collection includes an amazing selection by women with great taste—Walter, Shoshanna and some cool designers you may not know. This place is very stylish but relaxed. Amarcord Vintage Fashion Neighborhood: Soho Best known for its trendy collection of high-end vintage and hard-to-find designer pieces, this shop also has a premium selection of mint-condition handbags and footwear. The stock is constantly replenished and features the most sought-after trends and styles. Also find deadstocks, runway inspirational-pieces, costume jewelry and chic accessories. A.P.C. Neighborhood: East Village If you want to invest in clothing, then invest in well-made basics and classics that will go with everything. There’s no better place to shop for such items than at A.P.C., which stands for Atelier de Production et de Creation. And you really do feel as if you’re shopping for items that were thoughtfully and artfully created at some atelier. This is one of my favorite places in New York.
