Solar Transit Shelters Shine in the City by the Bay A bus shelter might not be the first type of structure that comes to mind when one thinks of new technology and sustainability. Nevertheless, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency desired both when it came to an upgrade of the city’s urban transit shelters. The design, by Lundberg Design and its client Clear Channel Outdoor, features a reddish undulating roof that pays homage to the city’s hills, the waves of San Francisco Bay and the seismic waves that periodically make the region tremble. But the symbolic roof provides more than aesthetics and shelter; it also actually powers the structure. How? Materials: LED Integrated Metal Mesh

Meshing Nature and Modern Architecture Prior to recent unrest, Libya, since the end of the international isolation in 2004, has been in a state of advancement. Numerous building projects have transformed its capital, Tripoli, into a modern commercial metropolis. One such notable project is the Tripoli International Convention Center, finished in February and created by the Istanbul architects Murat and Melkan Tabanlioglu. The reduced use of forms resulted in a prestigious meeting place, encased in semitransparent cladding with multiple slits, made of bronze-colored metal mesh. In front, a transparent media facade made of Mediamesh from technical weaving mill GDK, acts as a symbol for a new form of communicative openness. Originally, the architects intended to use fine-meshed bronze fabrics. However, this approach contradicts the typical bronze

Perfect mix: Integrated LEDs complement the transparent, but bronze-colored mesh facade of Tripoli’s new convention center.

characteristics—tarnishing under the influence of oxygen. GKD was able to develop an optical equivalent by painting stainless steel mesh in the desired color. The architect’s idea to cut the mesh into more than 500 rhombic and trapezoidal shaped panels in different sizes presented a particular challenge. To keep cost and time expenditure within reasonable limits, GKD transferred the shapes of the individual panels onto the fabric by means of laser technology. The precision-cut panels were attached to the building’s façade in such a way that different slit sizes—seemingly at random—were created according to an elaborate pattern specification. Their arrangement takes on the structure of bark from the surrounding pines, making the woven surface look natural. The semi-transparency of the filigree mesh provides privacy from the outside world, yet allows diffuse daylight to enter the large interior. From there the view of the surrounding landscape— which melts into the column tree—is unobstructed. Despite this visual transparency, the textile membrane prevents exposure to direct sunlight during the day, serving as fully functional sun protection.

It also transforms the wind into an even, mild airflow that ensures pleasant natural draft-free cooling. The distance of the mesh to the glass cladding is such that an air-conditioned passage between glass and mesh is created, whose cooling effect results in a long-term reduction of the building’s total cooling load. In the evening, the woven membrane produces a unique visual experience. As soon as the buildings are lit up on the inside, the light permeates through the slits and mesh and gives the façade the appearance of a forest flooded with light, creating an aesthetic symbiosis with the surrounding trees. The main entrance, not surprisingly, needed to pack a visual punch, and 350 square meters of the stainless steel mesh—with interwoven LED profiles—adorn the façade in the area where international representatives will enter and leave the building. Nine panels of Mediamesh, each 12 meters long and 3.22 meters wide, have been integrated into the bronze-colored mesh membrane in front of the glass cladding. The LED profiles are equipped with diodes every 4.25 centimeters and transform the transparent membrane into a media façade with a highly varied application range, and a 292,400-pixel resolution that provides superior video quality. In addition to individually developed media displays, it is possible to transmit events, conferences or films as live feed onto the mesh, transforming the building itself into a multi-media outlet that meshes natural surroundings with the cityscape and the old Libya with the new. The U.S. Senate, as part of its “Greening the Capitol” initiative, has renovated the largest hearing room of the Hart Senate Office Building using highperformance, energy-efficient LED lighting. The renovation program included the replacement of traditional incandescent lighting technology with Nila, Inc.’s NH LED lighting system for enhanced video recording applications, as well as a custom down light installation using the manufacturer’s Helieon Sustainable Light Module. Prior to replacement, the incandescent lighting systems in Senate hearing room SH-216 consumed over 55,000 watts of electrical energy. Only about 7,300 watts are used after conversion to LED lighting, a savings of nearly 49,000 watts or over 86%. “The antiquated lighting systems in the Senate hearing rooms were the source of a number of problems,” said Jim Sanfilippo, Nila’s president. “Video recordings have replaced stenography as the official Senate record, making the quality of the video critically important.” The traditional lighting technologies in use

failed to produce the quality or quantity of light for the unique needs of video recording, and the heat generated by the traditional lighting required significant energy to be used to cool the environment for the comfort of the hearing participants. The NH system brought bright, crisp light and precision dimming control capability while enabling energy savings and a 20,000-hour lifetime that is expected to dramatically reduce overall maintenance costs. In addition, the Senate wished to reduce utility costs via eco-friendly, energy efficient LED down lighting. Nila designed a custom luminaire for the hearing rooms using the Helieon Sustainable Light Module by Bridgelux and Molex. Helieon modules allow the luminaire to be easily modified as lighting requirements in the hearing room change, or easily upgraded as LED technology advances, without removing the luminaire from the ceiling. The down lights can be easily changed or upgraded with a twist of the wrist after installation, without the complexity and expense of removing the luminaire.•

An LED Salute to the Red, White and Blue At Baltimore’s Fort McHenry, the very place where American troops resisted the British invasion in the War of 1812, and consequently inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the National Anthem, a replica of the Star-Spangled Banner proudly waves. Formerly illuminating the flag were two large floodlights running at 700 watts, requiring regular maintenance, and interfering with the National Park Service’s aesthetic historic preservation goals for the site. Fortunately, a recent lighting upgrade put four compact LED floodlights on nearby rooftops, thereby meeting NPS’ requirement that no light units be placed on or near the flagpole. But even more significant is the fact that the SSL fixtures, manufactured by Beacon Products with LEDs from Cree, consume a mere 118 watts, drastically reducing energy consumption. In addition, the site’s lamp life increased from several hundred hours to a 50,000-hour rating. But wait, there’s more. The LED fixtures are connected to solar panels which collect enough sunlight during daylight hours to illuminate the flag from dusk until dawn. In other words, the floodlights draw no electricity from the grid and are completely self sufficient. The solar panels, designed and delivered by SEPCO, are located along with the LED fixtures up on the rooftop. Because the “LED lights provide a very narrow and intense beam of light, this allowed the lights and solar power assemblies to be remote mounted and concealed far out of view,” relates Chris Bailey, LEED AP, BD+C, an SSL technology strategist, with Beacon’s parent company, Hubbell Lighting, Greenville, S.C. Whereas the original floodlights spanned a 22-in. diameter, the NPS was very pleased with the LED’s compact size. “The whole

system was very easy to install, mount and aim allowing us to mount the fixtures outside of the view of visitors,” explains John Holtzinger, an NPS project manager, Baltimore. Equipped with sensors, the solar collectors detect dusk by a drop in sunlight-generated voltage. The LED luminaires switch on as gel batteries convert the stored power to electricity. While the operation works smoothly, an intricate process was required to size and specify the solar power assembly. This involved tracking the sun’s path and intensity, and establishing the LED array’s operational requirements. Judging by the success of this project and others, Beacon sees the adoption of LED lighting technology for landmark illumination growing. “With the many benefits that solid state lighting offers for applications such as these, the greatest singular barrier for additional implementation is awareness,” concludes Bailey. LED Demand Growing Be careful what you wish for is an old axiom that still holds true today and in the case of LED adoption, it’s definitely the case. While conversion to solidstate lighting for general interior illumination is not happening as fast as some might wish, this might be a good thing, as the demand for LEDs themselves, be it for building lighting products, TVs, electronic devices or automobiles, is at a premium. Evidence of this trend is certainly confirmed with a recent announcement from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors who will be significantly stepping up its production output by converting its two chip manufacturing facilities to 6-in. wafers, while expanding production at both plants. A new production building, in fact, is currently under construction in Penang, Malaysia, while in Regensburg, Germany, the original plant, the existing space is being reallocated. Furthermore, the two facilities will each be converting to the new manufacturing technology, introducing 6-inch wafers to replace the current 4-inch wafers. These measures are expected to almost double the chip production capacity for white LEDs by the end of 2012. The capacity expansion, according to the company, will primarily affect InGaN (indium gallium nitride) chips employing thin-film and UX:3 technology, which are required in the production of white LEDs. In the new production facilities, these chips will be manufactured on 6-in. wafers from the start and no longer on wafers with a 4-in. diameter. “By expanding our capacities for highperformance InGaN chips, we are consolidating our market position. The LED market harbors great growth potential in many different fields of application and we intend to continue harnessing this,” said CEO Aldo Kamper.•

and the winners are... Be careful what you wish for... Since we launched this magazine fours years ago, I’ve always wanted to have a product competition. The problem, of course, at that time, was that there weren’t a lot of SSL products to evaluate. But in the wake of past couple of Lightfairs, it’s clear there is an abundance of product out there. In fact, there’s so much product now, it’s easy as a specifier, to simply turn away or stick to the companies you know. That said, there’s a lot of good product out there and a lot of players coming out of left field with really interesting takes on the technology. Thus became the mission of the program: sort out the products that show

the greatest promise across a wide field of functions. In other words, we didn’t want to have a beauty contest of only the prettiest luminaires, nor did we wish to ignore drivers, arrays and other components that can be as critical as the fully assembled fixture. We also took award criteria seriously. We would not have the capability to do product testing or have products available for judge’s perusal—at least for this initial outing. As a result, we spent a lot of time with our judges, especially Dane Sanders, establishing criteria and data points. In fact, our web questionnaire team thought we were crazy in that we were really asking a lot—and we did. But our entrants responded. That

full data is not presented in the pages that follow due to space considerations, but is available at SSL Interactive. Check it out, along with our other entrants. As far as the judging, we operated on a simple 1-10 scale, but with the judges scoring entries in composite sections varying from an initial grade, to scores for technical merits; to scores for specific attributes such as replacement policies. I was glad we went to these lengths, as often these individual scores broke ties. This has been a Herculean effort on the parts of many people. My thanks to everyone who made this happen. The Coveline 120 runs directly off basic line voltage. It eliminates the issues with driver loss, low power factor and prevents dimming issues. Uses Tivoli Color Mix capabilities and a designer can also match incandescent x/y coordinates to select warm and neutral white light. It also boasts an extremely high efficacy at 420 lumens per sq. ft. for a small fixture. It operates at 120V AC using 3 module series per ft. with 36 Triple Chip Cree LEDs operating in a series. Judges’ comments: “One of the few LED adjustable products that runs off line voltage—it eliminates the need to find a hiding spot for a driver… Anytime I can

Fraqtir is a proprietary optic that combines the principles of refraction and total internal reflection to transform light from an array of LEDs into an asymmetric distribution ideal for illuminating surfaces evenly from one edge. The S301 and S305 concealed luminaires use optical technology to shape the light into a distribution which minimizes the amount of light trapped in the cove and maximizes uniformity across the target surface.

Lumencove is a modular and adjustable cove lighting system available in 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- and 8-ft. sections allowing ease of installation for both linear and radius configurations. Using 8-ft. sections reduces the installation costs significantly by reducing the number of connections required on a linear run. Using only 5 watts per sq. ft. and producing 438 delivered lumens per sq. ft. (4000K), Lumencove exceeds the performance of a regular T5 fluorescent lamp.

“Coveline 120 is a flexible LED solution for a number of applications and the fact that is line voltage makes the product a winner.”

Judges’ comments: “The form factor, optic and construction makes the Fraqtir a great example of a niche application fixture… “The optic is the primary feature of this luminaire and looks to be a good wall grazer.”

Judges’ comments: “Impressive output, good power supply options (120 or 277) and a great adjustable feature… “Excellent product for coves or display.”

award: Platinum Category: Industry Participation

Philips Lumileds became the first power LED manufacturer to begin mass production on 150 mm (6-in.) wafers and is now producing millions of GaN based LEDs weekly on the larger substrates. Each 150 mm wafer produces four times the number of LEDs as the current 3-in. wafers. This move to larger wafers is broadly viewed as a critical path to providing the increasing volume of LEDs required by the lighting industry and ensuring a sustainable and secure supply chain.

We asked companies to provide examples of their leadership through various efforts, be it research, involvement in standards development, education, creation of useful tools and websites, and the like. Based on these overall, omnibus submissions, we asked our judges to award specific honors in the following areas: 1) Technology Brand of the Year—for companies consistently delivering the most

innovative products that advance lighting application and design. 2) Industry Participation—for companies consistently involved in a combination of education, advancements in forwarding standards, appearing and speaking at conferences, and frankly, facilitating the free exchange of ideas to advance the development of solid-state lighting. 3) Education Brand of the Year—for companies consistently creating and developing educational offerings.

The LEDs manufactured on Lumileds’ 150-mm platform will support lighting applications from retrofit bulbs to street and tunnel lighting to office and school solutions. The company is already setting yield and quality standards that support industry growth and that other manufacturers can strive for as they implement in late 2011 and into 2012. Capacity expansion is a key driver in the adoption of LED technology by consumers. The ability to add additional high-capacity epitaxial reactors with enhanced productivity and yield means that Philips Lumileds has a lower need for capital expenditures and can drive unit cost down as volume increases.

4) Best Catalog and/or Marketing Campaign—for companies who consistently produce top-notch supplemental materials which help specifiers do their jobs. 5) Best Website—for companies who’s sites are truly functional and helpful. 2011 Reader Favorites Opening notes: In our sister publication, Architectural Products, every year we present the “Top 50,” which reflects the most-requested products readers ask for over the course of a given year. In this, our first Architectural SSL Products Annual, we thought it would be a good idea to similarly showcase the products SSL readers found to be the most intriguing. While not quite 50, this Reader’s Choice group of products represent a wide range of items that have appeared in the magazine over the last 365 days, including items we’ve highlighted in special reports, most notably the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s Lighting for Tomorrow and Next Generation Lighting awards competitions. Others simply caught the eyes of our readers, be it because of interesting form factors, modularity innovations, energy efficiency or application examples. Hopefully, something that attracted a colleague will also catch your attention.

• Award-winning downlight easily installs into existing 6” or H6-GU24 6” Architectural Housings • Uses only 12.5 Watts of energy

IN THE MAY ISSUE: We’ll take a look at SSL’s role as both an artistic and functional element of cultural facilities such as theaters and museums. Specifically, we’ll profile the dramatic use of LEDs in the new Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York. In the Market Setting Feature Kevin Willmorth will break out his crystal ball and proffer some predictions as to the growth potential of the SSL industry on the building side. He’ll also ID major issues which need addressing for real growth to occur. Elsewhere, in our White Pages section, we’ll examine self-testing of SSL products and common errors in doing so.
