Designer Carrie Holland sees kids’ rooms as a venue for expression.

C

arrie Holland never dreads going to work, because every one of her interior design projects is a new adventure. Each client is different, so each one has a different vision for how their home should look. “I love creating their vision — not just my vision, but their vision — and working together toward that,” Holland said. “I feel really lucky that people like what I do.” Although she designs everything from dining rooms to bedrooms to outdoor living areas, Holland has a particular affinity for children’s rooms. “You can sort of push the limits in those rooms with color and make a splash,” Holland said. “Big, bold statements that you wouldn’t necessarily do in other rooms in the house.”

As a mother of two, Holland knows how to speak kids’ language. he Dallas Stars are about to embark on their fourth season with Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate as the team’s official real estate company. But this will be the Stars’ first season without broadcaster Ralph Strangis, who stepped down to pursue interests outside hockey. We recently chatted with his replacement, veteran playby-play voice Dave Strader. You’ve worked for national networks, as well as the Detroit Red Wings, the Florida Panthers, and the Arizona Coyotes. What attracted you to this job? I just completed 30 years in the NHL — 18 years with teams and 12 being exclusive to a network. There are plusses and minuses to both. The team jobs — quite obviously, with how long Ralph had this one — are once-ina-lifetime opportunities. So when I heard the Dallas job was up, I didn’t immediately call and put my name in, because I still had a year left on my NBC contract. But I eventually called to see what the situation was, and two to three weeks later, [Stars president] Jim Lites basically made me the offer. It’s a great organization. And in this industry, if you can get a great team job, it’s the best situation. It’s the most secure, and you can still do the national stuff; there’s always that opportunity. But this job allows me to work with a guy like [analyst] Daryl Reaugh, who I’ve worked with before, and I’m reunited with Jim Lites, who first brought me into the NHL. Plus, it’s just a great hockey department; I’m well acquainted with [general manager] Jim Nill, from my time with the Red Wings, and many other people here.

“In this industry, if you can get a great team job, it’s the best situation.” Do you have a most memorable game viewed frombehind the microphone? The NHL does a separate international telecast of the Stanley Cup Finals, and that has allowed me to call every Stanley Cup Finals since 1997. After 11 years with the Red Wings, my first year with ESPN was the first time they did the international telecast. And that first one, in ’97, was when the Red Wings beat the Flyers, and they beat the Capitals the following year. It’s just a coincidence that it was the Red Wings; we get hired before the playoffs begin. But those have probably been the most memorable. Do you already have a favorite Dallas-area restaurant? You know, Bob’s Steak and Chop House, the original Bob’s on Lemmon, was always one of our favorite places for the ESPN crew. Dallas is a city with a lot of great restaurants, and a lot of great steakhouses, but some people with the Stars turned on us to Bob’s. Coincidentally, when my wife and I were looking for a place to live in Plano, we were staying at the Marriott at The Shops at Legacy, and there’s a Bob’s right there that’s every bit as good as the original. So I’m sure that’s a place where we’ll be having many more meals.

BOOM!

Business is booming at the intersection of the Sam Rayburn and Dallas North tollways, an area that Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere lovingly calls “the center of the universe.” If that sounds like hyperbole to you, perhaps you’re not familiar with all that’s on the way. By the end of 2017, Toyota North America and FedEx Office will both have new headquarters up and running in Plano, with a new campus for Liberty Mutual Insurance just around the corner. Between the three companies, some 12,000 jobs will be moving to the tollways’ southwest corner, which already houses J.C. Penney’s headquarters. And that’s what’s happening only on the Plano side of the equation. Just across the Sam Rayburn Tollway, the Dallas Cowboys plan to have their new base of operations — “The Star in Frisco” — completed by the fall of 2016. The Star will be along a stretch of the Dallas North Tollway known as the “$5 Billion Mile” because of all the expected development. 30A’S NEW HOT SPOT Alys Beach’s turf near the surf is in demand

H

ighway 30A hugs the Gulf of Mexico coastline in Florida’s panhandle and takes you back to when the Sunshine State was known more for its beaches than its theme parks. Along this road you’ll find sugarwhite sand and coastal dune lakes, plus some of the most beautiful beach houses in the world. Here is where the cottages of Seaside were born, planting a standard-setting imprint upon New Urbanism. Consumers snatched up beachy homes with white picket fences, in communities where families could stroll to dinner as easily as they could to the beach. Before New Urbanism was a known concept, buyers just knew they wanted a place so easy to get around that flip-flops would be a primary mode of transportation and “congestion” was a cluster of kids on bikes. The Stephenses from Birmingham, Ala. — Elton and Alys — summered with their family at nearby Seagrove Village in the 1950s. It was an easy, pleasant life. In 1978, they bought 158 acres of beachfront property along 30A at auction. For years, the family did nothing more with the property than enjoy it. Meanwhile, Seaside became the quintessential poster child for New Urbanism towns, famous for its streets, public spaces, and architecture. As Americans’ thirst for real estate expanded, so did Seaside. Lots that sold in the early ’80s for $15,000 are now worth well over a million dollars. By the early 2000s, Seaside clones had cropped up — the St. Joe Company’s WaterColor community exploded, and Rosemary Beach began going vertical. So the Stephens family began to develop their 30A acreage as Alys Beach, and they retained the Miami architectural firm Duany Plater-Zyberk. Not only did it design Seaside and Rosemary Beach, principals Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-

Zyberk also co-founded the Congress for the New Urbanism, a nonprofit that promotes human-scale neighborhoods in lieu of ad-hoc suburban sprawl. The team traveled extensively to research the architectural vernacular for Alys Beach, which blends the striking white masonry and stucco of Bermuda with the patio house type that originated in Antigua, Guatemala. Ground breaking began in 2004.

“No matter what property you choose, everything in Alys Beach leads to the water.” Then came the summer of hurricanes in 2005, the recession, and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010. Alys Beach just waited it all out. “In 2011”, says vice president of sales Tom Dodson, “We saw the first signs of renewed interest and inspired market conditions. And in 2014, we felt the property sales had validated that we were back.” Alys Beach is approved for 899 total properties, and 175 of them had been purchased at press time. The town center’s first mixed-use building, The Lucian, will feature first-floor commercial space below eight condominiums. Dodson says most buyers come to Alys Beach from the southeast drive-in markets, which include Texas. “Every other license plate I saw this past weekend was from Texas,” Dodson says. The drive is about 12 hours, but most people fly into Panama City directly from Love Field.

The average age of an Alys Beach buyer is about 48 to 50 years old, most seeking legacy purchases for their family. Houses start at $1.8 million, with homes closest to the beach going for as much as $7 million. The Lucian’s condos range from $850,000 to $1,885,000. But no matter what property you choose, everything in Alys Beach leads to the water.
