HVH BEACH HOUSE Date: 2013 Update: sept 2015

HVH BEACH HOUSE Since I was able to walk, my parents used to take me to the Hoek van Holland beach. That is why this beach is very special to me and that’s why I have chosen this location to make a design for “my” ultimate Beach House. The Hoek van Holland beach is actually a very special place in the Netherlands, because you can see the raw industrial harbor and container ships entering the port of Rotterdam, and also the dunes and the nature of the beach. The concrete pier and bunkers from WWII give this beach an almost surrealistic ambiance that I personally really enjoy. What I really like about the bunkers is that they are partly covered with sand. Only the light gabs and parts of the concrete are visible. This way you can only see a part of the complete construction. I used this same principle to design a concrete main wall that separates the public beach and the private parts of the house. To me, a really important part of the beach is the wind, the smell and the noises. This is why I have chosen to make the structure very open but still closed enough to get the same feeling of a bunker.

FOREST RETREAT Date: 2013 Update: sept 2015

FOREST RETREAT The forest retreat is located in the rural environment in a national park. The forest retreat is not only desgined as a space for meditation and escape from city life. Its also designed to be used as a social meeting point in the middle of the woods. The contains 3 very large bedrooms and a large communal kitchen where 15 peop le can cook and have dinner together. The idea behind this house is that its possible to use it for example as a bed and breakfast or fallout base for hikers and other nature lovers.

Scale 1:200

The concept behind this design starts from the fact that their is always a lot of activity around a river in a forest. Rivers and activity are always connected to each other because they comprise the veins of the Forest. Rivers also attract people - for example people that are into water sports, nature lovers, hikers, photographers The idea behind this design is a livable bridge. The river is always changing and te high, so it will not interfere with the river itself. It is possible to see the nature around you from every room in the house, and it is also possible to open the glass walls and experience the wind and sunlight directly indoors. In this way the building blends with its surroundings.

HIGH-RISE VILLAGE Project: Navigation Date: Location: Marconistraat 5, Rotterdam The project “Navigation” was all about to become acquainted with one of the famous Pritzker winning Architects and the way how they work. Every student was randomly attributed to one of those architects. The actual assignment was to design a apartment with the same design methods that you’re attributed architect would use. The place

CONCEPT THE HIGH-RISE VILLAGE The concept behind my design is to involve the surroundings of the apartment into the living space itself. Mies van der Rohe himself used this same concept when he designed the Farnsworth House back in the 1940’s . He choose to make the surroundings part of the design it self by making all the walls out of glass.

TIME MACHINE Project : Redsign AFFR Date : Location : Nieuwe Binnenweg 362 , Rotterdam This project was instructed by the client AFFR (Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam). The AFFR was looking for a “Homes base and choose for the old tram station located at the Nieuwe binnenweg in Rotterdam. This old station needed to be converted into a movie theatre for the festival but it needed to contain a cafe and gallery as well.

Program of requirements - Needs to contain the function of a cafe, movie theatre and art gallery. - Maximum surface area (including roof) 653m3

13

TIME MACHINE WDKA First Years work Data : May - July 2013

CONCEPTTIME MACHINE The AFFR always tries always to make there current locations part of the context of the festival. That’s why I have decided that the concept behind their home base needed to have a theme that always can be mixed into the theme of the festival. gram between architecture from the past, present and future. Basically the festival takes the visitors on a “time travel trip” from - a architectural viewing point. The concept is simply to let the visitors of the building also make a time travell. The old tram station from the 19th century refers to the past and the new design will be a symbol for the future. The building will transform into a time machine during the festival but as well from a architectural viewpoint.

TIME MACHINE WDKA First years work Data : May - July 2013

DESIGN TIMEMACHINE

The AFFR choose for this location cause of the historical value of the building and the unique function it once had. But the function of the building is nowadays completely lost. That’s why I have chosen to give the tram rails in the building its function back.

The new build outs resemble a futuristic spatial experience. Those new white build outs are this way de signed to create a large contrast with the old tram station itself. The build out at the front of the building can be converted into a open terrace and could be used to attract more people to the festival. The large tube shaped build out at the back of the building contains a lecture hall and movie theater. Also this large build out can be seen as a eye-catcher to attract more people.

HIGH SCHOOL HEART WDKA Second year Date : Dec - Feb 2014

HIGH SCHOOL HEART Project: Dialogue Date: February 2014, Bachelor second year Location: Van der Brugghenlaan 2-6, Schiedam The project Dialogue was mainly pointed at the social interaction between the designer and the stakeholders. Every student was about a social issue and doing this mainly by talking to the people who are involved with this problem. The theme I choose was the fact that the Dutch high schools are more targeting at marks and less about having fun and social interaction at school. I choose for the S.G. Spieringshoek high school cause this is the most strict school of Schiedam.

Program of requirements

- Existing location in Schiedam - The design ideas need to be presented to the stakeholders - There need to have been dialogues between the student and stakeholders

CONCEPTHIGH SCHOOL HEART dents). Basically the students all think that this school is way to strict and they only moment when they can actually relax and have some fun is during the lunch breaks. The school does have a lot of seats around indoors but on the students that didn’t really have a place to release all their energy. without any seats on it. The school building is actually build around this square and that makes the school yard some what like the heart of the school. The concept is based on this fact and with my design I have tried to revive the heart of Spieringshoek.

DESIGN HIGHSCHOOLHEART The sketch I made for the chosen object was just a randomly shaped form made from a metal frame span over with a trampoline like material called spacer fabric. But after the voting round it was clear to me that the end result needed to be an object where they even could be more active in. That’s why I decided to add a climbing frame to the construction. wall and lounge spot. The inside of the heart can be used as a lounge spot cause of the soft material and the exterior side as a climbing frame. Under the heart is a lighting system placed that will illuminate the heart nated the brightest color of red cause this is the moment when the most students will actually use the heart. The heart is shaped by the walking routes that the students use over the schoolyard when they arrive and leave school. There are also added a -

De Jonghweg, Rotterdam This project Care and Cure was meant to be a new development project for a healthcare avenue at the G.J. De Jongh weg near the lities and Clinique’s. Every student was free to choose their own kind of healthcare facilities or clinics during this project. Personally I think that the healing power of water is very interesting and that’s why I have chosen to design a hydrotherapy centre. This would The illnesses that would be treated in this facility are mainly stress, arthritis and other muscle diseases.

Spas have changed in many ways throughout the centuries, and are nowadays targeting the luxurious day treatments. For people with rence in temperature of the water rather than a luxurious treatment, in a while.

To answer this need, I have come up with a concept of a SpeedSpa, where people can pay by the hour and choose if they want a long visit or a short speed visit. All the visitors will begin their Spa treatment water in the Spa itself. The sustainable part of the building is equally important to the speed concept of the building’s design. One third of the water used in the The visitors are going down the same route through the building as the rainwater and can even see the water getting cleaner throughout the Spa.

BUSINESS-STATION MAY 2014

CREATIVE WORKSPACE Project: Design strategy Business station WDKA Date: May 2014, Bachelor second year Location: Wijnhaven 61, Rotterdam This project was started from out of an autonomous perspective. The end result of this project was to make an interior design for the Business-station at the WDKA. This station was meant to be a workplace were students could learn more about the commercial world think about the business station. This needed to be done out of a assigned form follows rule, in my case this was Form Follows Feeling.

Program of requirements

- Work from out of an assigned Form Follows Function, Flow, Feeling, Finance - End result needs to be an interior design

CONCEPTCREATIVE WORKSPACE Form Follows Feeling

The end result of the autonomous artwork is shown on the right photo. This artwork represents the fear of failure that I and a lot of other students have when it goes about starting your own business. This is actually a large problem in the creative sector cause a lot of artists don’t dare to think about entrepreneurship and commercial fabrication of their work. The bended and curved wire construction represent the free and creative mind and the dark substance absorbs this almost completely. This black substance represents the fear that most students have when it comes to entrepreneurship and commercial thinking. The concept I have come up with is to create a workspace / business station were students feel safe and at home. On the picture on the next is you can see the current business station and for me it clear that this isn’t a space were Art students feel at home and allowed to be completely their self. In fact I visited the business station several times and the only students that use it are leisure management students and not Art students from the WDKA itself.

30

CREATIVE WORKSPACE WDKA Second year Date: May – July 2015

DESIGN CREATIVE WORKSPACE Given that the students are mostly unknown with the businnesstation and their way of thinking its important that they feel comfortable and can work their like they are used to in other parts of the academy. Cause I am part of this target group I basically just went to places were I and art students feel comfortable. In Rotterdam this is mostly the Witte de With straat, Het Oude Noorden, de Oude haven, de deg but also festivals and cities like Berlin have a lot of locations were this same feeling is. The design of the new interior is almost all designed out of reused materials like furniture, door-frames, car parts, textiles, classroom and meeting room. The station can also be used as one very large open workspace by simply fold up the walls made out of door-frames. area were students can be taught how to pitch for larger groups. The number of desktops in the old businesstation are now sized down and put in the “Mac bus” and there are also a few

The work spots in the business-station are all designed as living rooms. This way the students can work in a more re laxed way and in a unforced ambiance.

The business station is still a station of the WDKA and that also be made part of the large open area or the classroom.

Lots of students like to brainstorm before they come to concepts and good ideas especially when they work in a group. For this I have chosen to make a small closable space out of a Volkswagen van. The most important thing about entrepreneurship is ofcourse pitching and presenting youre work. Its important that students learn to do this in a “unsafe” area. This is the reason why I choose to place the pitch podium in the middle of the opean area of the station. Because nowadays all students use laptops the station doesn’t have to have that much desktops anymore. I did transform a old city bus into a private work space for the students that do need a desktop.

or meeting room it can be hard for them to receive clients. To solve this problem I have made a meeting room for the students to receive informal and formal clients.

Here for they need a quiet private area. I have chosen to make this space to be at the end of the large open area so it can be optionally used as a public or private classroom.
