Starbucks' Good Intentions Just Aren't All Good For the past several months, racial tensions have escalated to volatile levels in various regions of the country as tragic events have unfolded involving white police officers engaging AfricanAmericans in aggressive and/or deadly methods of force. Much debate has been thrown left, right and center concerning a lingering return of authoritative oppression of minorities. Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz on the other hand decided to take a slightly unorthodox approach to spread the word about this disturbing trend by initiating the
"Race Together" campaign. Basically, all baristas were to write "#RaceTogether" on the cups next to customer names. When a customers asks what that means, the baristas were to engage in a conversation regarding racial inequality and how it can be resolved. Now, I'll give Starbucks some credit, spreading the word and having a (hopefully intelligent) conversation on such an issue sounds admirable enough, however the locale and other aspects of these discussions is where a lot of people drew the line.

You wait in line, but on this day, you notice it's progressing slower than normal. You look over at the pickup counter only to see a customer talking to a barista about a topic that you admit is a problem, but not one worthy to waste precious time (which you don't have much of) spouting on about. You restrain yourself not to curse a blue streak to wrap it up and keep the line moving. When you're finally being served and receive your drink, you notice the hashtag on your cup as the ink stains your hand. Your barista is about to repeat the same schtick as if reading a script, when you storm out, hoping your train to work hasn't left yet. Imagine that scenario, only happening several thousand times over.
So in a nutshell, a busy establishment where people are coming and going constantly isn't exactly the best place to just sit down with a complete stranger and say "Boy, these racial tensions sure are putting those police officers in a pickle, eh?" Why force baristas to engage customers in a topic some simple may not care about and/or have little to no idea how to maintain such a conversation? Duke Does It Again Well, I called it. Kind of. Last week I predicted a KentuckyDuke showdown for the NCAA Men’s Basketball championship. I also picked the Blue Devils to defeat the Wildcats in the final. I was half right, at least. Duke outlasted Wisconsin, 68-63, on Monday night to earn its fifth national title. On Saturday night, the Badgers upset previously unbeaten Kentucky, 71-64, to ruin my final game prognostication and prevent an all blue and white championship matchup… …I can’t really say that my former love for college basketball was rekindled by watching the semifinal and final games of this year’s NCAA tournament, but I did find myself getting caught up in the drama. And this year’s final had plenty of drama. The Blue Devils trailed by as many as nine points in the second half before a controversial refereeing decision and some stout defending flipped
the script on Wisconsin. The Badgers led, 48-39, after Frank Kaminsky’s layup with 13:23 left in the game. But then Duke outscored the red-clad cheese staters 29-15, including a 10-0 run that turned a 58-56 deficit into a 66-58 lead with just 1:22 remaining… …The critical refereeing error (and, yes, we can safely call it an “error”) came after the ball went out of bounds under the Duke basket. The refs on the floor said the ball went out on a Wisconsin player and were about to hand it back to the Devils when they decided to gather at the replay monitor at the official scorer’s table. For two minutes, the televised image swapped back and forth between the huddled referees and various slow-mo replays that seemed to clearly show Duke’s Justise Winslow barely touching the ball before it went out of bounds. But when the refs

season on the bench but ended it in the spotlight. His 16 points in the final game included several critical baskets during Duke’s 100 run… …Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan did not do the usual humble runnerup act after his team’s loss in the final. He criticized the officiating, specifically the rough play in the second half… but didn’t mention the blown call that proved so decisive. On Tuesday, he mentioned that his team “didn’t rent players”… a not-so-sly dig at Coach K, Kentucky’s John Calipari and others who lose players to the NBA draft after one season. The reality is that some freshmen are ready to play pro basketball after one year of collegiate competition and a whole lot more think they are. As much as the purist in me would love to see college players complete their eligibility before entering the draft, it’s not legal or fair to prevent athletes from chasing their professional dreams… or the big paychecks…
…Here’s the weird part. On Monday, NCAA Supervisor of Officials John Adams said that the referees in the final game didn’t get to see the multiple camera angles that CBS Sports shared with the rest of the country. “I saw it after they had left the monitor,” Adams told ESPN, “and actually thought about: Is it in my prerogative to get up, run over the table, buzz the buzzer and tell them to come back and look? That’s how critical I thought the play was, and concluded that this is a job for the guys on the floor and I’ve never done this before, why would I do it tonight and perhaps change the balance of the game?” In retrospect… yeah, John, you should have called them over to see the same views that a national (if not international) television audience had just seen… …If I’ll concede my purist’s point of view on the “rent-a-player” …While some may feel that issue, I refuse to back down on Duke’s fifth national title is some- another annoying aspect of the what tainted by the blown call, modern Final Four. Dear Rocco, I’m sick and tired of not getting any respect. My so-called best friend always has to have things their way. It’s either their way or the highway. When they ask me my opinion and I tell them they dismiss it, but will listen to someone else’s advice over mine, at one point questioning whether they could trust me. Therefore I don’t know why they ask. And to top it all off they take what I do for granted for a living. Granted, I’m not the President of the United States but I work for a well-established company. They act as if what I do isn’t important and that my job is a fun place to hang out, not a real place of business. I’m tired of the lack of respect and how everything in our friendship is one-sided. She said they were “only friends”, that I was overreacting, and that she needed “space”. I broke up with her right there and then. She ended up moving in with him, as a roommate, because she needed somewhere to stay. Well, she still lives with him as a roommate (or whatever…) and now it’s

ALLENDALE, Mich. (UPI) - A Michigan college student’s April Fools’ prank gone wrong was blamed for an apartment fire that led to a building being evacuated, firefighters said. The Allendale Fire Department said crews from Allendale, Blendon Township, and Georgetown Township responded Wednesday morning to battle the blaze in an apartment near the campus of Grand Valley State University. Investigators said the
fire apparently started when one of the four female college students living in the apartment tossed a fire cracker at a roommate as part of an April Fools’ Day prank and the firework landed in hamper, igniting the laundry inside. Neighbors said the girls knocked on the doors of other units in the search for a fire extinguisher, but the fire had grown too large by the time they were able to bring one back to the apartment. Capt. David Pelton of the Allendale Fire Department said the fire was the first he knew

of to be started by an April Fools’ prank. The extent of the damage to the building was unknown Wednesday, but residents were allowed to return to two of the building’s six units. Firefighters said other residents were expected to be able to return later Wednesday, but the apartment where the fire started was unlikely to be considered safe. Firefighters said the girl whose prank ignited the flames probably won’t face charges from the incident.

PEARLAND, Texas (UPI) Authorities in Texas said six high school students were arrested on drug charges in an operation that echos the plot of the 21 Jump Street TV show and film. The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office said it worked together with the Pearland Independent School District to have a deputy enrolled as a high school student at Pearland High School from Aug. 25, 2014, to Dec. 19, 2014, and then at Dawson High School from Jan. 6
of this year until March 27. The sheriff’s office said two juveniles were arrested at Pearland alongside adult student Aaron Coleman, 18. Dawson students Kevin Lambert, 18; Jonathan Gonzales, 17; and Matthew Van Richardson, 18, were also arrested. Investigators said they seized drugs including cocaine, marijuana, alprazolam and tramadol during the course of the operation. The arrested students are facing charges including delivery of marijuana, delivery of a controlled substance and delivery of a dangerous drug. “I appreciate the collaborative efforts of the county and city to safeguard the lives of our students through a combination of law enforcement and preventive measures. It is critical that we remain proactive, vigilant and intolerant with regard to drug offenses affecting our students,” Pearland ISD Superintendent John Kelly said in a statement. The sheriff’s office said the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force and the Pearland Police Department participated in the operation. “School is not a place that you should come in and try to sell your drugs, or come in and buy drugs, you go there to be educated,” Sgt. James Brawner of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office told KPRC-TV. He said the investigation is continuing. “There is still ongoing off campus investigations,” Brawner said. “We have
wrapped up on campus, and now we are moving out into the communities and trying to further it that way.” PHILADELPHIA (UPI) A Philadelphia 4-year-old who wandered away from home at 3 a.m. and boarded a bus in a search for a slushie has promised to wait for her parents next time. Harlan Jenifer, driver of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority No. 56 bus, said a man flagged down his vehicle about 3 a.m. Friday in the Tacony neighborhood and told him he had found the young girl wandering the streets alone. “Got to be kidding me! At this time, at 3 o’clock on the morning,” Jenifer told WPVI-TV. “She’s a small little thing. It kind of just shocked me.” The girl, Annabelle, got onto the bus while Jenifer called police. “All I want is a slushie, that’s all she said!” Jenifer said. “It was too funny,” Jenifer told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I was scared for her, but it was funny. She was in good hands.” Annabelle’s parents, Jaclyn Mager and Timothy Ridgeway, said the girl has promised not to wander off on her own in the future, but they changed the locks on their home just in case. “There are no words, he saved my daughter’s life,” Mager said of Jenifer. “I’ll be forever grateful.”

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. (UPI) - An Arizona man who was surveying the bag of a recently purchased used set of golf clubs says he found a loaded pistol inside one of its pouches. Mel Grewing and his wife, Cheryl, originally spotted the clubs in a thrift store in Sedona, the Mojave Valley Daily News reported. Though he already owned a set, Grewing purchased the clubs and brought them to the couple’s seasonal home in Bullhead City. While searching the golf bag’s pouches for extra balls, tees and other accessories, Grewing says he found a Browning Arms .22-calber match-shooting pistol. A loaded magazine was inserted and the safety was off, he said. “If a child would have pulled that out and pulled the trigger, something (tragic) could have happened,” Grewing told the Daily News. The Grewings already own similar firearms and say they are recreational target shooters. The couple took the pistol to the Bullhead City Police Department, which found through a search of federal databases that the weapon was not reported stolen and was not registered to an owner. Grewing said he and his wife would keep the gun. “If no owner is located or contact attempts have failed, the gun may be released to its finder,” department spokeswoman Emily Fromelt told the Daily News.

STOCKTON, CA. - There was a bit of controversy a couple years ago when power companies first started installing so-called Smart Meters. Opponents said that the Smart Meters were too intrusive, tracking information about their power usage that amounted to an invasion of privacy. There were even a couple of stories about home owners who blocked technicians from installing Smart Meters in their homes, resulting in police intervention. As it turns out they were frightened of the wrong thing. While Smart Meters still MAY BE invading peoples’ privacy with the amount of information they track, the real danger comes from them exploding. Granted, the explosions were caused by a dump truck crashing into a substation in Stockton, California, but on the other hand you didn’t see a lot of stories about the old meters exploding. The power company said the dump truck hit a utility pole which caused some transmission wires to come in contact with each other, creating a power surge. The explosions started at around 8:30 a.m. and interrupted power to more than 5,000 homes. Residents in the area described it as a large pop or a bomb going off, and strong enough to shake a house. Yeah, maybe the power company knowing what time of day you run your washing machine isn’t the most dangerous feature of these things.

The War On Drugs Was Not An All Out Aural Attack but A Much Needed Welcome Indie music is sort of a conundrum. Truth be told its more attitude than anything else. Most bands that see themselves as an “indie” artist are labeled that for one reason – no one wants to sign them. Music has gone from being just that – music to being extended therapy sessions put to instrumentation (notice I don’t use the word music).
they were playing and decided I needed to check it out. I looked them up online and read where they had what any called the album of the year. I read a little about the band and so on and so forth and headed down to check them out.
stage. The only thing missing from making this a full millennial/hipster turnout was that one chick that always shows up at events with a hula hoop. She wasn’t there. She missed out.
They were the epitome of a indie band or at least the stereotype. The singer had marginal talent and most of the time the band sounded like they were in tune – other times not. Their music has been described as “acoustic freak folk”. Yep that pretty much describes it. Apparently they have been receiving a lot of praise from independent music press. That should have been my first warning.

keyboard focused as there are three members playing keyboards on any given song. I was surprised at how melodic the music was especially compared to the opener and other indie acts I have covered. The opening number, “Under the Pressure” seemed to drag on as it was a melodic roller coaster before coming to an end. But the music sounded somewhat familiar. When “Baby Missiles” started I knew

an audience is to have a catchy opening and tie everything together at the end with a nice bow to leave the person whose attention you are trying to get and keep with a powerful and smooth finish. Apparently Hop Along never heard of that. Some of you haven’t either, so there’s your lesson for the day. Their set consisted of hit and miss songs – some sounded pretty good – others… meh… Then it would come down to the big finish. Instead of finishing on cue and in tune it sounded like each member was playing not only a differ-

Yes, you read that correctly. If you can ignore the wild hair and early ‘80s fashions and MTV videos and listen to the music you will understand what I mean. AFOS was a badass band that is lumped into the early MTV vaults because of their look and not taking into consideration their actual musical talent. I was kind of wondering what was in store for me as The War On Drugs hit the stage. To put it mildly they were nothing like their support act. and actually an independent found an audience - a loyal artist. one for their music. Even though “new wave” isn’t taken very serious by music snobs, it was a time when really the true indie artist hit the mainstream. Look at all the stereotypical bands of that era and look beyond their videos and fashion sense – Culture Club, The Vapors (“Turning Japanese”), Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Modern English to name a few broke the mold of modern music of that era. They were writing their own music, performing it and singing their songs in a way that didn’t have to be perfect or “industry standard” and
Despite looking like every other indie band out their today the music coming from these guys is quite ambient and melodic as I hear influences from AFOS and early Cure. Their set included songs like” Red Eyes” and “Your Love Is Calling My Name” as they played a lot of songs off of 2014’s Lost In The Dream. The War On Drugs’ music was a pleasant surprise. Who knows? Maybe there is hope for this generation yet.
